Charles Lloyd wrote this tribute to John Abercrombie, with whom he played for six years and selected this concert in his memory. August 28, 2017 at 9:20am ·
"I was traveling when I received the news about John Abercrombie leaving town. I was deeply saddened and immediately wanted to post a tribute to him, but did not have the technology with me. John was a beautiful soul who shared the bandstand with me for about six years in various formations. His music was deep and his humor made him a wonderful travel companion. As I was looking for tracks to post in his honor - I came across this 2001 concert in Montreal which was in honor of Master Billy Higgins who was to have been there on drums, but he had ascended a month earlier. Marc Johson is on bass and Billy Hart on drums. Now John and Geri have left us nearly a month apart. It seems appropriate to post this concert, they both make wonderful contributions to music. It touches my heart deeply. A great joy to have served with these great masters."

I only regret that he and Geri Allen didn't record or perform together more frequently. A fine set.

what I find interesting about some folk is how they can sometimes put their own expectations on others and then are unable or unwilling to figure out why happiness avoids them. Please just listen to the music and keep it moving.

It has taken me a long time to appreciate the music of Charles Lloyd but now I find myself liking him a lot and even seeking out his earlier material. Perhaps it is the fine musicians who are in his orbit and the obvious sincerity in his recent performances -a fine upload-thank you.

I'm a big fan of Charles Lloyd and I think he is in TOP3 best currently living sax players - with Wayne Shorter and Pharoah Sanders. And I miss Abercrombie...

God listen to them all on that first Miss Jessye; when Jeri and John are riffing early on it is in some other dimension, and Charles on his game, happy as can be, because he knows it's happening and he is there.

What a great set! Brad Mehldau played on some of the recorded versions of these tunes, but Geri Allen is killing it her way. And what can you say about Abercrombie? I miss his combination of tasteful comping and intelligent, emotional leads. This band was one of the best at listening to each other and playing off each other, not just going around the horn on solos. That's one of Lloyd's trademarks. Wayne Shorter, too, does that. And too few other groups. That's real jazz.

In addition to being a very overrated jazzman, Lloyd is the other of totally stupid and laughable quotes such as this one: ''Women are as connected to music as women are to Africa. Women are all connected to the land and music is connected to the land. The drums come from Africa and have supernatural powers. Women and drums must be respected. I'm a shaman, I go out into nature, I talk to the trees and plants'' or ''I am a shaman, I go out into nature, I talk to the trees and plants'' ....LOL!

Charles Lloyd = overrated ! Random pentatonic minor scales all around all the time with out of tune sound.
