The temperature has been dropping and I’ve been getting chilly. In an attempt to stay warm this winter, I went to the local REI to check out jackets that are on sale.
After shopping, I drove over to watch the sun set at the beach in Leucadia. But there were too many clouds to see a sunset.
And in keeping with the cooler temperatures theme, I made lentil soup for dinner.
If you enjoy my videos and would like to help me keep making them, please take a look at these links to support me:

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.
My Channel Stickers are now available for purchase through PayPal. If you would like to purchase them, please send me $4 for one sticker or $7 for two stickers.
At this time, I will only be accepting PayPal for payments.
Please make sure to include your mailing address in the notes. Unfortunately, I will only be able to ship to the US and Canada.
Also, I will be mailing out all orders once a week. So please be patient with me.
In an effort to help viewers search for the best prices on products that I use, I’ve started an Amazon Influencer link:

Fun fact: The word ‘beanie’ comes from the 1900s slang word for ‘head.’ They used to call the head a ‘bean,’ so they called this type of cap a ‘beanie’ because it covers the head. But I love how mindful you are with your choice of word. ❤️

I used to live in leucadia a long time ago and when the train went by the windows in the house rattled and the dishes rattled in the cupboards. You would be surprised how fast you get so used to that, it doesn't even wake you up! That was a pretty short train. Here in Montana they are very, very long. 💕🤗💘

Having been stationed east of San Diego, on Mt Laguna, in the 70’s, while in the Air Force, I agree it can get chilly in San Diego in winter. Years of car camping have taught me a good base layer of polyester thermals can make the difference between comfort, and being cold. Sportsman’s Guide on line, stocks a line of durable military surplus thermals, at reasonable price if you ever want to check them out.

Good morning, Scott! Your coverage on sweaters, especially the Patagonia apparel, was entertaining. I have been parked at Mission Bay for several days and it gets quite chilly when the north wind comes off the water. The temp was in the low 40's just after midnight. I wore a Banana Republic black jacket over a lightweight hoodie and a ski hat ("beanie") to sleep in and in a zero degree Coleman sleeping bag. At 74 I find myself more susceptible to the wind chill. I parked at that area a week ago in Leucadia and my daughter and I enjoyed a delicious Mexican meal across the street.

Must be a seasonal thing -- one of your vlog colleagues was just elaborating about some of her "first world problems" . . . But while clothing choices might qualify, weather is universal. Or is it? . . . Mark Twain is supposed to have said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." And an acquaintance of mine from Minnesota and I were talking about a recent weather front, when he corrected me with "I've been coming out to California to visit family for the holidays for about 15 years now, and I don't remember any storms . . ." Your sourdough experience reminds me of the time I dropped someone off at SFO and was so hungry after that I picked up a tasty-looking loaf at a vendor in the terminal -- I had parked and accompanied my friend -- and, even before arriving back at the car, had torn off and wolfed down several hunks. Sensing something different about my impromptu "meal", I examined the wrapper closely and discovered the recommended baking instructions . . . it was purchased half-baked (a familiar theme).

SE Wisconsin. In the 20s°F at night now. Add a 30-40 mph wind and it's no fun. Been doing this 3+1/2 years. Last Feb 2 weeks straight with below zero temps. Spent it in a motel. That's against my nature. Have slept in vehicle at -25°F. Doable with no special gear. Current vehicle is a van. Has windows and leaky door seals. Had plans for a good electrical system to supply some heat. Big AGM, solar, pure sine inverter. Didn't work out. Solar I bought was junk. Returned it and the AGM. Have a little buddy heater but it's risky with how tight space is in the van. Lots of cloth. Won't ever consider a Chinese Diesel Heater, hate everything diesel. Have a 350watt 110volt heater I can run with inverter, cool battery box and top line group 78 FLA starting battery. Runtime would be very limited and I could easily destroy that battery. Should have got things sorted out before the cold hit. High output alternator and DC to DC charger with some cabling would have been the ticket. Gonna kinda rough it till I can find some short term shop space.

A man after my own heart…. I too hate slick and noisy clothes, prefer solid black with a matte effect. Another expression I like is “close but not tight” to speak of the fit. And I prefer layers to one thick coat because I like options when I’m out on a hike … which I’m just about to do. This is a good video, I think you talked about the difference between chilly and cold in a solid way. Very thorough. However I never let pilling alone stop me from wearing. That’s just cultural and fast fabrics in our current fast fashion industry exploit that. Be well, smile and enjoy whatever weather comes your way. Florida is another good place to hang out for extended static periods outside hurricane season of course. ❤️🙏🏼☮️☕️

I grew up in Louisiana and experienced a few of them on the beaches in the Gulf. Not fun. There is a season for them, you can look it up, and outside of that you can live very happily on the beach. But inland gets mighty hot in summer. I keep my east coast ventures up north around the Chesapeake Bay and I want to visit Cape Cod. And traveling east through Arkansas, Tennessee and Virginia there are the most beautiful campgrounds and friendly people. I found a trailhead to the Appalachian Trail at Nolichucky Gorge in Tennessee and it was situated on the river and so sublime that it is now a destination camping adventure for me. I’ll pack an easel and paints to capture some of the awesome beauty. Maybe next October. ☮️👍🏼😊

I didn't like wearing hats of any kind, however the sun and thinning hair have changed my mind. I too, don't like anything tight on my head, I like my hats a little loose, the knitted ones. I say comfort before, fashion. I'm not trying to impress.

I’ve been putting up new videos at least twice a week for the last few months.
I have an Olympian Wave 3 heater. It’s far superior to the Mr. Heater Buddy. I gave away the Buddy heater I bought after I found out how dangerous it was to use in my van.

You grew up in SoCal, right? Do you think the temperature extremes (in both directions) are higher now than they were in your youth, or is it pretty much the same?

Temps are not much different in my opinion. But I’ve noticed the humidity is worse in the desert areas.
