    As an owner of a 21 RS Trophy (not R) Im always fairly surprised at how often these get overlooked in favour of GTI/Golf Rs, Type R civics etc. They’re such a beautiful car and they drive insane. The rear wheel steering takes a bit to get used to but once you do, they’re so much fun. The weakness is the shitty stock tires - my non R comes with Potenza S001s and honestly PS4s are infinitely better in my opinion and less tire roar too. Great video!

      What’s the best way to drive the car… slow into the corner or how do you put the car through a bend ?? I’m about to take delivery of a trophy and I have never driven the 4 wheel steering hard down a b road before?

    • @thereignofdando
      @thereignofdando 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@S29ORY I haven't tracked mine so I've only really leant on the car heavily in a road driving sense. At high speeds, the elongation of the wheel base is awesome, they feel really stable. In a sharp bend/hairpin, it feels a little odd like you're losing the back end, which is the bit to get used to. I also recommend ditching the factory tires (mine had Bridgestone S001s which were shite) - I've put Michelin PS4S's on it now, and it's a totally different car.

  • @ArosaMike
    @ArosaMike 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    There’s no ‘ice mode’ in ABS. It’s a state estimation controller and legally ABS can’t change based on mode. It works on wheel stability, so looks at deceleration of the wheel against reference speed. There is of course a cycle time for the controller.
    Main question is, if you don’t have ABS do you brake over the jump? And if so, are you able to react to the inevitable wheel lock over the crest in time to come off the brake pedal, allow the wheels to recover and turn back in?
    If a car is modified with different brakes or wheels/tyres, you change the wheel inertia and the pressure/wheel force relationship. In this situation, you’re more likely to trigger ABS and it will trigger incorrectly as you’ve changed some physical parameters in a the closed look control.
    If you’re interested, the Bosch automotive handbook goes into the basics of ABS control logic and might help your understanding which in turn can help your driving technique in cars with ABS.

      I would like to read more about the specifics of this, do you have a link or good search term to find this?

    • @tayf85
      @tayf85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      'Ice mode' was definitely a thing in some older GM vehicles. It is often mistakenly used to describe unexpected and prolonged ABS intervention. You hit the pedal and literally get no brakes. Aftermarket wheels/tyres/brakes have a minor effect on ABS behaviour but are not significant contributing factors to the 'ice mode' experience. The frequency of intervention is driven by the slip ratio tolerance and wheel speed deltas. The issue Misha experiences here is related to the ABS unit miscalculating the reference speed when some wheels leave the ground and it thinks the car is sliding when wheels are back on the ground with brakes applied. If you see other examples of this behaviour in motorsport it will usually involve the car coming over a crest or bumps in the road.

      @@tayf85 And don’t get me started on bikes. God i hate abs on bikes. Most bikes (some do it good) have such bad abs that makes the bike not only work agains you, but to the point that the it sometimes doesn’t even let you brake at all. It will pump so definitely gonna upset the balance at that point to. Which at the same time making you shift the weight to further weakening the traction and basically making it so that you lose control

    • @ArosaMike
      @ArosaMike 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tayf85 modern ABS logic doesn’t generally use slip as a target. It uses wheel inertia and looks at individual wheel deceleration rather than slip. Reference speed is also generally not generally much of an issue for ABS in high mu situations.
      What is likely happening is the mu estimation learns down from 1 as the wheels go light over the crest. This will j instantly mean the logic now needs to learn back up to a higher mu which it can only do relatively conservatively since the increased wheel deceleration due to the reduced contact patch load could be very real (ie the car could have just crossed from high mu to polished/black ice)
      This isn’t ‘ice mode’ though. It’s just the overall mu dependent relationship between wheel deceleration and mu. Hence there is no logic that is an ice mode. Simply a reaction to the available grip level.
      A skilled driver with knowledge of the track could of course reapply the brakes with higher confidence than the ABS controller due to the fact they’re self aware and have eyes. However, a skilled driver should also be able to realise that they should lift the brakes over the crest. Which is exactly what they should do without ABS too.
      So in summary, ABS has no ‘ice mode’ and the reduction in brake pressure due to the crest could simply be avoided by driving as you would without abs.

    Well, if you put different brake pads on, the parameter application of the ABS from factory is kinda thrown over. If you keep the stock pads, it would work spot on. If you change something major on the brakes, you would need a different application to make it work spot on again. And, you seemed to be braking at Pflanzgarten right on the crest, where the car gets light. The wheels will lock up a lot faster there because they are in the air. If you would do that with a car with an older ABS system, it wouldn't recover as fast as it does on the M4RS with so-called Conti ABS-Gen3.

    In my old 996 turbo, the ABS used to trip out on the exit of the concrete section in Karussell in the wet. You'd get two warning messages on the dash; "ABS fault", then"TC off". Sensitive ABS is the worst. I once had it fully stop me from braking in the snow. I could steer so there was some grip but no braking at all. I was only going ~30 down a hill towards a roundabout trying to pump the pedal to get it to work, try the handbrake and swerving to bleed as much speed as I could. Thankfully the car on the roundabout I had to stop for saw me struggling and slowed down to let me on but damn that was scary. Surprisingly driving around the roundabout was completely fine but I don't want to be in that situation when going at any sort of speed. I decided against using summer tyres in snow after that

    Can confirm different brakes pads, especially on street tires, can make abs weird. I have pmu club racer pads on ps4s and always had this issue on track. Roughly after 3-4 laps. I always thought it was the pad/rotor not being happy but now realized it’s probably the tire overheating with too much stopping power.

    Oh that ABS thing is interesting, i never heard of that issue but looking back on it i think my old mazda 2 had the same problem when doing "spirited street driving". on my commuter road there is a dip where it goes from smooth tarmac into some meters of slippery cobblestones, right before a tight right hander. when i hit the brakes on that few meters of cobblestones of course the ABS kicked in and its like braking on ice, but braking power never recovered on the following tarmac before the turn. braking later just after the cobblestones or letting go of the brakes for a split second solved that situation, but man was it scary when it first happened.

    Even not on a track one of my company vans had an abs unit go down twice. VW Caddy for ref: The abs valve unit had locked shut to the front right wheel so as you were breaking especially on left turns it would think you had no grip so released the breaks to ALL the wheels accelerating around the corner and smashing thankfully into a curb. When it goes faulty or is over sensitive ABS can lethal and when you're on snow or ice it can be just as destructive but on a normal dry road it's great.

      All Meganes have a very playful but light rear end, even more so at high speeds. You let go off the throttle at the wrong time on the ring and you're gone. The Megane 3 RS is like that too, but at the same time it's so communicative and with lots of feel and feedback through the steering and from the front tyres that it's very easy and fun to drive at the limit if you know your road. My 997 GT3 has this so much! Whenever I stamp the brakes too quickly (on track), the front wheels are (obviously in a 911) still very unloaded and assumingly get a tiny lockup. This results in ABS freaking out, giving me a very hard pedal and no way to build up more brake pressure. Very very scary whenever it happens, especially because it's often in those situations where I have to react to something unexpected in front of me and I need all the brakes I could get. I keep wondering if a race-ABS system would be able to re-evaluate the available grip levels in a smarter way, recognizing there is now more available grip on the front wheels due to the weight transfer and give me all the braking performance that I need in that moment. I've learned to work around the problem with a more gradual braking application on push-laps, but I'm still afraid that one day this will catch up with me. I'm also unconvinced that letting go of the brakes and re-applying myself is the right move in such a moment, but I haven't found a time and place to safely evaluate this approach (and then to internalize it!)

    I hate the S007 Bridgestone tyres on my Trophy-R. The turn-in is great but they are useless and dangerous when cold and when warm they are about same level as the PS4S. I love the PS4S but I expect more from a tyre on a car like this that needs extended warm up like a Cup 2 tyre before you can actually pace it. I don't get it. Renault Sport put so much money and engineering into this car and they put UHP level wanna be semi slick tyres on it. Even if they have a deal with Bridgestone they should have made faster tyres available as an option. They also could have easily shaved 4-5 seconds off the Nürburgring time. I've seen a test where the Cup 2 tyres were half a second faster than the S007 RS on a 50 second track and they were pretty much dead even with the PS4S. A little mind boggling

    • @Resnicanin
      @Resnicanin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's the notification (sound and green gear icon on dashboard) for suggestion to shift gear up when you get to optimum RPM in current gear. Standard feature on all RS models, it can be switched off.
