      Hey, I'm actually working on making a blind accessible rhythm platformer game. Here is the test level I have made. th-cam.com/video/cm0JjaIxwoQ/w-d-xo.html I'm signed up to be a Nintendo Developer but they have yet to let me touch the Switch. GET ON IT, NINTENDO! I've also emailed Nintendo asking them to make some kind of text to speech option for the Switch so my friend who is completely blind can navigate the store but they gave me the generic, "We want to make our console as accessible as possible so we'll look into it."

      James Rath Being totally blind, I have a limited selection of games I am able to play. But I'm sure I confused the ... out of my teammates in Splatoon 2 when I started covering random spots with ink and then hide from attacks really quickly. I also impressed some of my friends while playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and destroying them LOL. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is another one of my go-to games, and I like Super Mario games, so a game I can actually play that's a platformer is the mobile game, Super Mario Run. I like playing the Nintendo Switch, 3DS, and Wii.

      James Rath Hello!
      I'm moderately blind, with enough useable vision to read print if it's large enough or close enough. I don't have too many issues with contrast unless the item on-screen is small, like say an item that needs picked up from the ground.
      The first experience with video games I can remember is my older brother putting his original PlayStation into 2-player on one of his games, letting me mess around, and quickly die, LOL!
      When I was 13, I got a portable DVD player that came with a little controller and some installed games which I enjoyed fiddling with.
      Funnily enough, I first seriously started getting into games a little at the school for the blind I attended. It was about 2005, I was in about 9th grade, and the boys floor of the dorm had an N64 with some sort of racing game, (not Mario Kart). I remember trying it, loving it, and being annoyed that us girls didn't have a game system because, EXCUSE me, girls can game too!
      Not much later, I started playing these little games that came with our Dish Network satilite TV, like Carrot Mania ... which eventually led to my parents getting me a GameCube. The rest ... was history! I started out on titles like Super Smash Brothers: Melee (Man, what memories ...), Paper Mario: Legend of the Thousand-Year Door, Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, those really crappy Harry Potter movie tie-in games I bought at Blockbuster because nobody wanted to rent them anymore, and The Sims: Bustin' Out.
      My mom's friend, about a year later, gave me her spare PS2, and I played even more Sims games as well as Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland! I eventually moved to PC Sims games and also got a Wii. I loved Harvest Moon games on my Wii, and also Rune Factory Frontier (aside from the annoying runey system) and Tides of Destiny. Wii Sports was fun as well, and I eventually got Mario Kart Wii.
      Today, I have a PC, PS4, Switch, and my old WII (with GameCube controller and games) and PS2. I tend to prefer life/farming sim games, but also some racing like Mario Kart. I'm also quite fond of the Lego games, which are a lot of fun, particularly with my 7-year-old niece. Those got me into a new hobby altogether ... building Lego sets, but that's another story.
      Anyway, I'm currently enjoying Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Rune Factory 4 Special for Switch. I also play My Time at Portia and some other indies on PC.
      Sorry, folks, that was a lot of unnecessary history and rambling. However, it's really cool to see fellow blind and visually impaired gamers and learn about what they play, and what methods work for them.
      Now, if only the Switch would build a basic screen reader into at least some of its menus ... maybe add TTS read-out for Animal Crossing characters ... I'd be one happy camper!

    Nice video. I am also legally blind, and have a Nintendo Switch. I like the dark mode for the menus, but wish that applied in the store. Mario Odyssey’s Assist Mode was also a really helpful touch, especially for getting through some sections where it was a little tricky to judge the depth of some jumps.
    I do think the video title is a little misleading though. I know a majority of legally blind people have some usable vision, but the title kind of implies that there is some accessibility for a totally blind gamer. I try to differentiate between low vision and blind accessible in my video titles. Just some constructive feedback.

    • @jamesrath
      @jamesrath  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for the feedback. I guess it's always been a bit mixed for my case. No matter how "good" my vision is in a moment it's always at least been legally blind but many times throughout the day my Nystagmus (vertigo/eye movement) speeds up and strains itself making unable to identify anything visually, just light and blurred colors.. and sometimes I still game in that visual state. It'd be great if Nintendo could incorporate a screen-reader to announce what menu option I'm on or announce when friends come online for those times. A lot of my menu navigation skills comes down to memorization.

    • @dothedo3667
      @dothedo3667 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Oh Yeah Yeah I suggest you learn more about everyday accessibility aids, if you haven't already (I realise this comment is 8 months old). Not trying to be snarky, it's useful and even fun and interesting to learn about and understand. There are many videos on this channel (I think) that talk about them, and loads more videos on other channels that explain and teach you about all manner of things.
      To answer your question though:
      There are multiple ways someone with low vision or no vision can use the internet and type comments. It depends on type of usable vision left and preference (and potentially other impairments). So some people with low vision could use an extreme zoom feature, large keyboards, or use voice-to-text like Siri and Google Assistant (which lots of sighted people use all the time). Or they might use voice-over assistants/screen readers that tells them what they're about to click on and what they've just typed. They might even use a human helper to do things for them. They might also have a Braille display screen reader, though those aren't very common with the current technology available. Some also know touch-typing, which is just knowing where the keys are without having to see them - something sighted people are taught to do too. Someone who is totally blind wouldn't find the zoom feature useful. Someone who has other additional impairments might find typing or using voice-to-text difficult.
      So, since blind people aren't all blind in the same way, and since they have personal preferences or other impairments, just like a sighted person does, each individual could use any number of aids and in different combinations to access the internet like anyone else (mostly). Technology is great and always improving, which is sort of the subject of this video.

      @jamesrath  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! And yes, mappable controls should be a standard. I know in Japanese culture it's kinda standard tradition for them to tell you how you should play based on how they think the average person should experience it but obviously, it's not inclusive and I think it goes to show Japanese developers like Sony have been ahead of the time with PlayStation accessibility. WIsh Nintendo would keep consistency amongst their games.

      I'm not as much of a gamer as I used to be back in the day either, but still enjoy the older games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario world, which I was never the best at, but always enjoyed giving it a good try anyway, and Streetfighter 2, but wouldn't mind trying the newer Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 that I'm just now finding out isn't so new anymore, as opposed to the Mortal Kombat 3 I used to play on SNES. I don't really have time to just sit around and play games like I did years ago, which technically I probably shouldn't have been doing then, but thinking back on it, who really wants to get up and help with housework and the like, especially at 14, which is now a battle I'm fighting with a daughter of my own, and is one of the reasons I'm on the fence about getting a Switch of my own. She wanted one for Christmas several years ago, and I'm glad Mom never got her one, because I knew nothing at the time about what accessibility features it did or didn't have, and chances were, that she would have had to set it up and manage it, and it would've just been a constant battle to fight to get Hannah to turn it off and put it away when we needed her to, and now that I'm wanting one of my own, that I will need help setting up, that could potentially be something for her to lust over, and I'd have to guard the heck out of it, and keep it in my lockbox at night, or when I'm not using it to make sure I'm not later finding it in her room.

    I'm legally blind, but I can still see most things. I can't read most text unless I'm like 2 inches from the screen which makes most games REALLY hard to play. Most games don't allow you to adjust the text. Which can be really important in some games, especially those with lots of lore like the Dark Souls series (Which I have beat). The text is really the biggest part for me. I can see shapes and everything, just not text. And I'm a slow reader, which makes things even harder. But I'm still in love with video games and can end up on the top of the leaderboard in most shooters (If I'm being sweaty that day). So my suggestion for accessibility to most game devs is to add some way to make the HUD bigger or allow us to change the font size.

    Fellow Switch lover with albinism here! When I was a kid, Pokémon was literally the only game I could play all by myself. I was so excited by this video, my mom wanted to know what I was yelling about. I only have useable vision in my right eye, so I play in handheld mode with assists. I play a TON of Splatoon 2 and the stereo headphone sound allows me to know where other players and enemies are coming from. My ophthalmologist even prescribed me another pair of glasses for reading and gaming! I have other disabilities too, which can really be limiting, and I wish I could talk to Nintendo about accessibility.

    I like this video I was curious as to how you played video games. I recently went legally blind in both eyes 3 months ago from a condition caused by low blood pressure. Before this happens I collected video games retro the current I have almost 2,000 physical copies in my collection. I have not stopped collecting even though this happened but I do have a hard time playing video games for more than 20 minutes at a time. All I see is gray but I see colors through the gray and shapes so when I watch TV on my 60 inch I see half the screen. At only around 10%. I tried playing Zelda on my switch but that was difficult because I could not see my inventory buttons or what's in my inventory and Etc. I am also very blinded by light it makes it so much harder to see so I have to wear sunglasses when I'm on my phone and most of the time during certain movies. But watching your video gave me some hope cuz it lets me know that one day I'll probably be able to play my games for a lot longer and maybe my eyes won't be so strained in the future. I'm still very new to being legally blind I just got my first cane that was hard for me but I love it. We all adapt and Life Goes On I like your videos I have subscribed thanks.

    I'm a video game player with no impairments that affect my ability to play. I enjoy Nintendo a lot because they're just generally sort of friendlier, easier you might say. Most of their stuff is aimed at a wide range of ages so that younger kids can play and have fun, they're generally not super stressful and intense. They're relatively mellow, but still have games or modes that are more intense/action-packed/difficult for those who want them. Of course they have plenty of other brands that make different types of games for even more variety. I know Xbox, PlayStation, and PC gaming probably have all of this too, but I feel like you have to seek it out more. Anyway in one specific example, the game Kirby's Epic Yarn, you literally cannot die. You just lose gems and/or are returned to solid ground. I don't think that game is very accessible visually though, unfortunately.
    Yeah. I just like Nintendo; they've got cool stuff.

      yea i know i’m not blind myself but i have friends including james who are blind so i think it’s very interesting that they play video games too some of them even play the smash bros games which is just insane as even with regular vision its a very insane game to play because some of the blocking and dodging is pitch perfect so its really interesting that blind people play video games even if they can’t see which is really cool in my opinion

    Hi i just bought a switch and was hoping if you could suggest any visual aids that are available to assist with gameplay? Thanks

  • @cloudgamingclub

    The problem I find with games is getting the right level of brightness and colour. As sometimes the game is to dark to notice where to go and then times its gleaming with glare. From this the biggest problem for me is always falling of edges.
    I totally love games that have clear direction markers on where to go at a press of a button. Having the option to zoom in games is also a big help. Plus a sense button which identifies objects and people when a button is pressed.
    I personally hate games that dont allow me to customise my map to make it accessible. Also I hate when then map cursor is a small while dot/circle which I don't find or lose its position before i click on the icon on where to go. My biggest frustration is having quick time events in games and a upon failing a button sequence will kill the character.
    I got distracted from zelda after putting 60 hours in and the same for Mario which is a crime in itself not to finish them but I didn't want it to get fatigued on them. At them moment am playing xenoblades chronicles 2 on switch which can get frustrating.

    • @jamesrath
      @jamesrath  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing, with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, are there customizable fonts or HUB sizes? I had problems seeing the text for the first one and sent plenty of feedback to Nintendo about that.

    • @cloudgamingclub
      @cloudgamingclub 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Rath No font or HUD customization in this game. The frustrating part is that the quest market on the top of the screen only identifies if the quest is above or below you. Which is horrible getting to about 10 footsteps of the quest only to find out it's underground and you didn't spot the entrance which is located on the other side of the map. It makes it harder when you bring up a larger map which is semi transparent overlay over a character that can still move and it only focuses around the area the character is.

    I do have a switch. So far I got mario plus rabbids kingdom battle, smash bros ultimate, and pokemon shield. If only there was a narrator or some sort of mode that can help out with the game, cause I’m stuck on a level. Usually pokemon games would be easy enough with some assistance, however, with this one, this is hard.

    • @jamesrath
      @jamesrath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes I find looking up walkthroughs to be helpful as content creators will often read the dialogue in games.

    • @blind_t2
      @blind_t2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesrath ok, sometimes I don’t like commentary for games, I let the sounds do the talking, but for certain things like a level I’m stuck on, then maybe you’re right. Then that’s a good idea. Who would you say is the best one to look at. I’m trying to get help for pokemon shield if you got that game. This second gym mission is a friggin pain. Oh, and since I have the switch light, no rumble. So that trap detector is gonna be of no use since it can’t rumble.

    Hi there my name is Sam I am visually impaired not completely blind but maybe I should just see partially blind. I've been playing video games practically all my life with my visual impairment up until now. One thing that works for me was sitting close to the TV all the large screens do help however it requires a lot of head movement because I have almost no peripheral vision and I'm completely blind in my right eye so trying to see the whole screen all at once is difficult but I still managed. I also played Game Boy with a magnifying glass one way that I play handhelds today including the switch when it's not docked I also used by CCTV video magnifier by simply just placing the console on the platform I could then see the video game on the CCTV screen which also allows me to adjust the controls for zooming in and zooming out. I may not need to do that anymore now that I know that the Nintendo switch has a zoom feature. Great video thanks for sharing

    I'm blind in my central vision which makes reading difficult as well as small elemets on screen. I would appreciate it if the Switch had a magnifying feature like the PS: As it stands, I how well I get along with a games HUD really depends on the developer's choices. As resolution has gotten higher, HUD elements and text have been shrinking. Option to enlarge the two would really help.

    • @jamesrath
      @jamesrath  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree. I wanted to play Xenoblade Chronicles a few years back on the Wii U but it was impossible for me to read the text or see the menus. I've yet to try the PlayStation's magnifying feature, how well have you found it working for you?

    • @theshadowdirector
      @theshadowdirector 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The magnifier is good but could be better. You can activate it at any time with a button combination (other accessibility functions let you do the same). However, you can't choose the ,level of magnification as It's fixed. All game controls are also locked, all you can do is moved the frame around. if you're trying to read a small dialogue box, have you to switch the zoom off in order to move the text on and then re-activate zoon (and usually adjust the frame again). It's certainly flawed but still useful. On the Switch, it could actually make many text heavy games playable again in portable mode,

  • @angelofvlogs

    Splatoon is so much fun! I‘m sighted so I do not have these problems (and ohh I should finally go on with playing all the games) but it is sooo cool that the Switch has these features :) I remember as a kid, I had a magnifier for my GameBoy as well because of the tiny screen.
    My most played game at the moment is Fire Emblem Warriors. I have sitting Splatoon 2, I am Setsuna, Zelda and Mario sitting in my box waiting for me to play but I am a bit short on time and don‘t play much apart from Fire Emblem Warriors and Splatoon because they are games I do not need a hella lot of concentration and they can be played easily in between. While for Zelda and Mario I want to spend more than an hour a day and that even interrupted. But once my exams are all written at the beginning of February I‘m off till April and will use my time to play them more ❤️

I'm leaning towards a controller that specializes in haptic feedback 🤔

      Nintendo Switch and PS5 lean heavily on their haptics but it all depends on the game of course and how they take advantage of it.

Hopefully in the future I see more games more assessability that would be nice in my opinion.
