While felt some empathy for David's heartbreak, I don't like what he did with it. I've seen people carry a torch for someone their entire life w/o even making it known, due to extenuating circumstances - and that's a mark of true nobility. But then it didn't help that the girl waited so long to let him know he had no chance with her. 'Tween you and me and the gatepost, he was better off w/o her type.

My family home is in Asheville. However, I did live about two miles from the Zebulon Vance home place and down the hill from where Wade Mainer and Mainers Mountaineers’ farm was on Stony Knob. The Reems Creek valley is a special place and has a legendary history that helped shape the settling of Western NC. I have heard so many stories from many in the old time community. Also, having rented from Bruce Phillips back in the early 2000s and heard all his crazy civil war stories passed down from his great grandfather and further where that family settled in Beech Glen, I have a deep connection and respect for how folks lived up there back then, Thanks so much for this story. New to me but old as sour molasses. Thanks y’all. I wonder if his family is related to the great flat pickers Lamar Grier and David Grier. Do tell.

This story brought back the memory of an old song from the 1950's. "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, don't pick a pretty woman to be your wife." "From my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you." Many beautiful women are rude, cruel, selfish, thoughtless, self centered, and just plain mean. They don't change their ways, even after they lose their good looks. However, (thank Goodness) not all beautiful women are that way. David should not have set his head on Mary. Without knowing what he was doing, David proved Mary to be correct (by making other people pay for Mary's cold, and cruel rejection and painful words said to him). "Two wrongs never make it right." It would be interesting to learn about what became of cruel, hardhearted Mary.

Sad is that this man became bitter from the rejection of this pathetic self centered woman. He would have been better off to have worked hard to find a truly beautiful woman who had a good hart, and made himself a happier life. So many fall for the appearance of beauty but don't take the time to truly look for real treasure.

Have read through these comments, and while I appreciate these opinions, I must say that I have a different opinion concerning the lady's response. On the basis of experience I will say that she did what she had to do. If attention is unwanted, the only reasonable response is to speak clearly and with brutal honesty. Nice words will be taken as encouragement. And in these cases false encouragement is unfair to the unwanted person. In my opinion she was the wiser person in this situation. To be "nice" in these situations keeps the unwanted person hanging on. She may even have had enough kindness to think that a brutally honest rejection would provide the other person with a basis for moving on quickly to a suitable relationship. Or she could have percieved that he was somewhat dangerous, and wanted to avoid an accusation related to 'stringing him along". Women can get themselves killed, in that situation. It is far better, to be absolutely clear, even if the words sound harsh. 0:00

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller honestly man I had a pretty good child hood ,kinda like the isolation of the Appalachians . My grandmother used to bake us stuff and cook on this old fire stove,we spent all day when not at school hunting, fishing or working. One island we lived on had Kiwi's nesting under our house and penguins in the woolshed, I got to swim with what wild dolphins , went white water rafting , jumping off waterfalls. I used to walk for miles beach coming looking for cool stuff, Island hopping in helicopters and on boats ....all in remote places of NZ. Lol 🤣 the good old days, but even then all u wanted was some little shack on a little bit of land with ability to get some water and food,be awesome

Wondering if you could find any information of my great grandmother she was from Corbin ky. Her name was Sarah Jane Roaden, the story I heard as a child was her family originally came over with the group from the mayflower {Roaden or Roadan} she married PH Salmons whose family was Cherokee. I could never find any other information, my grandfather passed long before I became interested and with my limited resources I could not find out anything else. My mom would get invitations to the Roaden family reunion every summer but she was never interested and I never found out until she passed. If not thank you anyway.
