    Photography is more than just capturing moments - it is an art form, a means of communication and a way of experiencing the world more consciously. In a digital world where cameras are always available, it is easier than ever to take advantage of these benefits. People worry too much about camera gear, posture, proper perspective or waiting for the perfect moment, just enjoy taking pictures

      Well said! Photography is indeed a form of communication and self-expression. For me, it’s about both enjoying the process and capturing meaningful moments. As I mention in my latest video, the essence of photography is to create freely, allowing your creativity to flow naturally and without pressure. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for watching the video!

    This just popped up in my recommendations and the timing is perfect. After over 50-plus years of doing photography, I've got kind of semi-burned out, finding it hard to get motivated. So I decided to do the classic one camera, one lens, one year exercise and chose the 50mm (equivalent) for 2025. I've been spoiled by too many cameras and lenses in my collection to the point of over analyzing every decision on what to use. I'll be using my Fujifilm X-Pro2 and the 35mm f/1.4 only this year.
    Hopefully this exercise with this single focal length will take me back to my first thrill with photography that I had in the late '60s.
    Enjoyed your video.

      Sometimes, having too many options can feel just as limiting as having none. I’ve experienced this myself, even though I may not have as much experience as you. I love the idea of committing to one kit-it’s something I’ve done a few times over the years with different focal lengths. It was during those periods that I felt a deeper connection to my gear and really started to master it. Switching between gear too often can prevent me from reaching that level of comfort and confidence with what I’m using. That’s why I truly believe this approach will be beneficial for you. Thank you so much for watching the video and for sharing your experience-it’s incredibly valuable. I really appreciate it!

    Fab images and video Aris. When I bought my 50mm f1.8 lens it stayed on my camera for years and went around the world with me. It was too good to take off. Despite the resistance for change I eventually got an 85mm. However the 50 always has a special place in my photography. Without it a lot of my shots would have not occurred or would have been mediocre with the kit lens.

    I must say @Aristeidis, this is by far on of the best overall street photography primers I’ve seen on TH-cam in a long while. I think most of what you’ve stated can apply to any focal length. I shoot 50mm a lot but prefer 40mm, because it gives me a good middle ground between 35mm and 50mm. Not to mention 40mm is closure to how the human eye perceives the world opposed to 35mm or 50mm.
    That said, as you’ve pointed out, every focal length requires a different approach to photography across the board. My go to focal lengths are 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, and 50mm depending on the environment. This year however, I plan to experiment more with 75mm, 85mm, and 90mm for street. These are focal lengths I typically use for portrait work but you can come up with some interesting compositions when shooting with longer focal lengths for street and environmental photography.
    You have a new follower. Make it a great day.

    • @AristeidisSfakianos
      @AristeidisSfakianos  หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is true. I touched upon some basic concepts of composition in here but I tried to apply them to the 50mm focal length. But I do believe that there are differences in how I compose my shots between 40 and 50mm. I think it is exactly as you say. The 40mm is a middle ground. 50 tends to be a little closer to the long lenses than the 40. I will make one for 40 mm down the line, especially because this is the Ricoh GRIIIx focal length and I use it all the time. I think your approach for the new year is very nice. If you are used to shoot with wider focal lengths, experimenting with longer lenses will open up new creative paths. I am very glad you decided to join the channel! Thank you so much for your very kind words and for sharing your thoughts! Have a great new year!

      One of my favorite lenses for street is my Nikon Z 85mm f1.8. It can give a real pro look shot wide open with fantastic background blur. A lot of 28mm shots may as well be shot with a Pixel 9. I sometime use my bird lenses for street 100-400mm and 600mm, they are against trend but can produce stunning results. All be it voyeuristic.
      I also shoot 28, 40 and 50mm@@AristeidisSfakianos

    Photos well illustrate your points. 50mm used to be the fl for 35mm film camera kit lenses. 50 is a good measure of what fl to try next - tele if you crop most of the 50mm images, wide if you find yourself moving back to get the composition.
    Next up suggestion: 35mm (full frame equivalent).

    It was a refreshing change to watch a video on TH-cam compiled by someone whose interest is centred ON PHOTOGRAPHY as opposed to one merely about the gear - of which there are surely far too many. I am glad you think so. I am enjoying gear too. Don't get me wrong. That is why I often review my gear on the channel. But when I speak about photography I prefer focusing in the essence of it. @ I enjoy using my gear too and there’s certainly a sense of ‘pride of ownership’, I believe it’s called, in owning a well-made camera say. Going back to photography though, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that somehow an expensive camera or lens will automatically produce good photos - they won’t of course as no camera can think and no lens can compose - that is down to the photographer!

  • @inSurfersParadise
    @inSurfersParadise หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    My fave has been the 85 for a long time but it’s a theif’s lens. For someone who takes images. It has been my way to maintain distance from my subjects and not be involved in the image, or at least it lets me pretend I am not involved.
    I have a 50mm f0.95 on the way. It is time I stepped into the scene. Became part of the energy of the shot. Befriended the people I am picturing. Became part of the energy I am capturing. Time for me to stop taking pictures and start making pictures.
    The 50 is a small intimate stage. To get 3/4 portrait shots you need to be in your subject’s personal space. You cannot hide. You are a now the photographer, engaging, directing and capturing.

    • @AristeidisSfakianos
      @AristeidisSfakianos  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I’ve mentioned this in a previous video, but I completely agree with you. I absolutely love the look of the 85mm lens, but it can sometimes feel like it creates a sense of detachment from your subject and composition. I haven’t had the chance to use an f/0.95 lens yet, but it’s definitely something I’d love to try. It sounds like an amazing tool for creating impactful street portraits.
      Your approach is really inspiring, and I agree that it’s incredibly rewarding to connect with your subjects. I don’t always interact with the people I photograph, but when I do, it adds a whole new layer of meaning to the images. The way you describe the 50mm lens fostering that connection is spot on. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and for watching the video!

    I really agree with everything you said about the 50 mm, I remember the first time I shot with it, I found it actually difficult to compose with it because it is just in the middle of 85 and 35, gradually I learned to use it properly. I like the way you isolate your subject and still compose wonderful pictures with it. But , forgive me for being the devil's advocate, I think that eventually focal length are so subjective because each photographer / videographer will find the focal length that they like to create with. I used to love 50 mm a lot but in the last two years I actually find that I am more inclined to use 24 mm. Yes a lot comes into the frame and I find it more challenging to use the 24 mm and compose with it. Eventually it also depends what the photographer wants to create and use the focal length accordingly. Having said that, I repeat I agree with each and everything you said about the 50 mm, your video popped up on my feed and curiosity brought me here, I love the passion you have about photography, you share that beautifully in your videos. keep up the good work !!!!

    • @AristeidisSfakianos
      @AristeidisSfakianos  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it’s pretty common to feel a bit out of place when transitioning to a 50mm lens after using 35mm or 85mm. It can feel odd at first, but it gets more natural with time and practice. No worries at all; I really enjoy conversations like this, especially when they challenge me to think differently about my views in a constructive way.
      I agree though. The focal length of your choice is very subjective. However, each lens, depending on its focal length and build will give you a different image. A 24mm lens can’t replicate the look of an 85mm, and vice versa. They each excel in their own way. That said, I love seeing people step out of the norm, experimenting with portraits on wide-angle lenses or capturing wider scenes with an 85mm. I try these approaches myself from time to time, and it’s always a creative challenge.
      Thank you so much for your comment! I really enjoyed reading about your thoughts and experiences.

    I fully agree Aristeidis! It's very challenging, the fifty mm ... I have published a photo book featuring street images from the old town of Bern, all of which were taken with the Leica Summicron 50mm f/2.0 lens. Cartier-Bresson also almost always shot with a 50mm lens, and you can't say his images are boring, can you? But it's true: 50mm may seem like a simple focal length, but in reality, it presents a significant challenge because you have to choose from many possibilities. You don't get the foreground drama of a wide-angle lens, nor the compression or narrowing of the field of view that a telephoto lens offers. Best regards from Helvetia.

    • @AristeidisSfakianos
      @AristeidisSfakianos  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No, of course. It is anything but boring! Bern is beautiful. I bet you have a lot for great stuff in there! I agree. 50mm can be a very complicated tool to shoot with as it sits right in the middle. It can do everything well but it is hard to choose which style to go for. I have a fun way of parsing this up in my head... If I shoot "at something" (landscapes) I choose a wide angle. If I shoot "of something" (specific subject) I shoot 50mm or longer.

    Great video and snaps! I only wanted to ask if all the shots presented in the video are shot on aps-c or full frame camera, or they are mixed? As far as I know, the 50mm wouldn't give the same look with both sensors?

    • @AristeidisSfakianos

      Thank you so much! Most of them are shot on APS-C with a few exceptions shot on full frame. Regardless of the system they are all shot at 50mm equivalent focal length (50mm on full frame and 35mm on APSC).

    Γεια σου Άρη. I may stand corrected, but I think you were using Fuji x-T camera in this video. If true, I can then assume you had a 35mm lens on it(50mm on full frame). Just checking. I am also a Fuji user as an enthusiast photographer. But also have a Nikon D750 FF with a 50mm f1.8 mounted on it most o the time. Ευχάριστο και χαιρετισμούς

      Γεια σου Μάριε! Indeed I am mostly using the Fuji 35mm F/1.4 for this one which gives me an effective focal length of 50mm on the XT-5. However, I have also used the Soy 50mm F/1.8 on Sony A7III and the Samynag 35mm F/2.8 on Sony A6400 in the past. That Nikon kit is really nice! Να είσαι καλά! Σ'ευχαριστώ πολύ για το σχόλιο!

      The experience might be the same for everyone but for me, the closer I am to the action the more emersed I feel in it. Thus, a longer lens can make me feel like I am the spectator. Thank you for your comment.

    The 50mm is my best lens. However I went to a trip in Amsterdam with my family and only took with me the 50mm 🤣🤣 I learned the hard way that 50mm is not enough specially when trying to take a picture inside a small restaurant, mission impossible walls all around us.

    • @AristeidisSfakianos
      @AristeidisSfakianos  หลายเดือนก่อน

      In this video, you’ll see photos captured using the Sony A7III with the Sony 50mm f/1.8, the Sony A6400 with the Samyang 35mm f/2.8, and the Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T5 paired with the Fuji 35mm f/1.4. Each of these setups gives an effective focal length of 50mm, which is why I often refer to the 50mm focal length rather than 50mm lens in the video. I plan to create a follow-up video focusing on 75mm and longer focal lengths for street photography. Thanks so much for your question!
