Only buy a box if u wanna build a deck with the entire set and be pleasantly surprised if get big hits. Otherwise just buying the cards u need or want is best way, maybe a booster here or there for fun. But relying solely on boxes isn’t great value wise. Only a couple times I hit a card worth a lot, but wasn’t one I needed for a deck so would trade it back to shop and put the credit toward singles I wanted, did put a card toward a whole other box once for fun though.

Those surge foil cards in the original lord of the rings were super expensive because they were 1 per case. That was an actually a hard hit. Then the holiday edition just tanked all of those surge box toppers.

Lol Charlie doesn't know a lot of the cheap cards are really good sometimes. Legendary creatures that come in boosters are usually always cheap because they're only good in EDH.
The irony is, as a kid in the late 90s, early 2000s, i couldn't afford the big ticket cards, the meta decks...etc, and now, as a working adult, I have the means to get it all, but I do not have the time for the hobby anymore.
People don't like foils because they curl, so cards which are valuable mostly because they are very playable and which are speculated to continue to be playable are often more expensive as non-foils. If it's very playable and very iconic, the foil version will probably be worth more because people 'want the shiny cool version of the iconic card'.

It's crazy to me that they printed Karakas into the LotR with the commander symbol. Karakas is banned in commander. It's like they thought giving it that alt title would cause the rules committee not to notice.
