- Lauren Singer, known for living a zero waste lifestyle in New York City, runs a store called 'Package Free Shop' in Brooklyn. Her popular blog, 'Trash is for Tossers' details how she lives a lifestyle free from sending trash to landfills. She's making the minimal environmental impact she can, and you can too by replacing everyday disposable products with reusable ones from her shop. You can shop online as well at her online store.

This is a great shop and a really cool message. But please, guys, if you have reusable plastic containers, don't throw them away for fancy metal containers. That would not be in the sense of zero-waste. Use what you got at home

It’s great how Lauren is bringing zero waste lifestyle forward with a shop. I can imagine running a shop is an expensive business, so as long as her business is not as big or as well-funded as Wallmart or whatever you forks are comparing the prices with, it’s probably necessary to keep it at a significantly higher price.

Alice Lu it’s better than the products the average American uses. also, these are meant to last a long time which means no need to rebuy which will significantly reduce the consumption rate of single use plastics from one person and more (as this is a growing movement). Also I feel like Lauren is trying to be as conscious of her product choices as possible and I think that’s what makes the biggest difference at the end of the day.
Mel I know these are labeled as “conscious” choices these days, better than plastics, but still many of those soaps, shampoos aren’t as good for environment and definitely not everyone’s skins, lots of those soaps are just like normal mainstream products you can find outside, they’re just the basic soap types
Alice Lu I think that’s why it’s important to find which product is best for you but still keeping in mind what is put in it! For example I use raw African black soap and Castile soap which are both great for my skin and eco friendly!
Mel castilles are like basic soaps... and they still uses packaging which is none different than mainstream ones. especially those brushes, there are eco brushes available mainstream supermarkets as well... (and better quality)
Keep in mind that Lauren also shares the recipes for the products originally made by herself on her blog. That is the cheaper zero waste alternative to lots of the products in this store. Lots of people complain about the prices, but the products you can't make yourself are highly reusable for a longer amount of time than the conventional plastic/single use items you'd replace these with. Over a longer amount of time, buying stuff here will definitely be cheaper. Take a safety razor compared to Gillette, for example. The razor is more expensive, but you only need to buy new blades for it while a Gillette needs a new razor head. Or the water purification devices compared to buying tons of water bottles.

You know the Microplastics we started hearing about? That Plastic that will stay around for generations? dissolved into particulates much faster than expected.
GE PLAYER that’s... kind of how it works... anything you cannot make on your own would most likely be more expensive, since it takes labor and time to make the product. Cheaply made stuff will remain cheap and the more effort it takes to make something the more it’ll cost. What would you prefer, diy, cheaper but less durable, or a bit more expensive yet more durable product?
@GE PLAYER i mean you sometimes make homemade food because it would be cheaper but you still want to buy them when you don't have the time. I guess you're used to cheap labor products that you don't appreciate things like this.

That's the way our grand parents and grand grand parents used to buy food and other stuff. Using plastic for every single item today is INSANE and uneeded.
And didn't really take off until 90-ties, so we can still undo it if we only want and cat on a global scale. My grandma wasn't relying on plastic, recycled glass and and paper, Iived a happy life but would always carry her own shopping bag everywhere. She knew how to sew and reuse fabric, she knew how to grow herbs and plants. So why can't we? We are as much capable of learning and doing those things which were pretty normal for our ancestors. Nowadays people trash the world with electronics. My father used to would recycyle and reuse any piece of electronics. When people lived behind the iron curtain they could reuse all types of scraps to build any piece of electronic equipment they would need. We can use it everywhere. No need to trash an entire laptop if you can reuse 80% of old one to upgrade several others or maybe to build a new one or at least to recycyle it for rare metals.
We have to start thinking about long term investment. A good stainless steel thermo is not cheap but you can use it for lifetime. Sustainable brands are more expensive and you can't pretend it to cost as same as regular big brands which mostly are not sustainable, not trade fair, not cruelty free.
Melanie Liu remember: cruelty free is never sustainable or biodegradable. go get wool and leather products, preferably at a thrift store, because they are easy to recycle and last a lifetime. "cruelty-free" ends up being dumped in two months because it doesn't last, it is made by slaves, and it ends up being eaten by birds and whales, whereas you can recycle wool indefinitely.

People are complaining that the prices are too high for people, and I agree. But this amazing woman actually has a blog where she writes DIY recipes for toothpaste, detergent, household cleaning products, ect. She profits off the people that already want their products made, but she also helps you make them yourself. I probably won't be buying any of her products any time soon as I'm a broke college student, but she's truly inspired me to go through the sustainable route. Small steps, people, small steps.
This is such a great business idea... I want to go zero waste, but it’s hard when you can’t even purchase vinegar or baking soda package free. Well, I guess I will have to open my own store 😂
I know prices are probably higher than average, but that doesn’t mean Lauren isn’t doing something brave and meaningful. Maybe her products aren’t accessible to everyone right now, but if people start buying more compostable toothbrushes, shampoo bars etc in 10 years these items will be produced in a larger scale and become cheaper. But someone has to start the change

But we can’t give up, my friend ... if all we can do at the moment is buying a reusable water bottle, than let’s do it. Even something so small can raise awareness, and who knows, maybe one day people will realize some fruits don’t need wrapping.
Ludmila Maiolini the reason cucumbers/veggies have plasic wrapping is because they go bad so fast if they don't and then there would be a lot organic waste instead. But I think researchers have found a protein in silk that could be used as an alternative to plastic wrapping so hopefully that will become more usual in a few years.
Wimmie Well, I hadn’t thought about it that way :D I live in a country where most of the veggies we consume are produced locally, if not in the same city then at least in the same country, so it’s easier to find things unwrapped. But when we need to take things overseas we need different solutions.
Well, mankind has done incredible things, I’m sure we have enough intelligence and imagination to come up with better packaging
Check out bulk barn! (not sure if it's just a canadian thing) but it's an entire bulk store and they allow you to bring in jars now :)
And when British came they mocked us for eating in leaf plates

Hrishikesh badiyar. You are right.. We Indians used banana leaves as plates to eat.. this made the food healthier as well as produced less waste because leaves are biodegradable. But when British came to India they forced us to turn into the western lifestyle and everything has changed since then..

A store like this is great, especially where I live. I live in Barbados which is a small island in the Caribbean and recently a ban was implemented where manufacturing companies were banned from bringing in single use plastics, so now all the straws, containers, cups etc are disposable, recyclable or made from paper.🤗

The problem I have is the cost ... I walked into a store the other day, it was bulk buy foods. You bought your own containers..I love this idea but they were selling plain flour for $20 a kilo .. I cant afford these sort of prices.
If prices were reasonable then I am sure more of us would do this but until then we just have to survive the best we can on our limited wages...
That's the thing. The only way we can make this type of lifestyle realistic for everyone is if the prices compete with one use plastic items. The business owner will have to eat the cost at first, but I think it's a worthy investment to get more people living zero waste.
Monse the store I was in, nothing was under $20 a kilo, feel free to pay my bill if I were to shop there...
Vanna I am happy to buy from these stores but not at the expense of my mortgage and buying at these sort of stores will cost me my mortgage money... as I said if they were a reasonable price I would be in there like a shot...
Excellent!!! We need waste free stores in every town! I am happy to say I have dramatically reduced the amount of trash and recycling coming out of my home. With a little effort we can all dramatically reduce the amount of plastic we buy! Start off by eliminating plastic bags, bottles and straws! Many local grocery stores accept plastic bags including plastic bags from stores, ziplock bags, and most plastic bags that are clean and dry! Remember refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle ♻️
Love it! We have to change if we want to have a place to live in the future. Can't wait for more and more of these shops to pop up.
Also, for those complaining about prices, everything new always starts at a higher price, but as it becomes more in demand, the prices will drop. Also, you don't have to buy from this store, there are other options, this is just a good way to get some ideas and then do some research of your own. The idea is to become more aware of what you are purchasing, how it affects our planet, which effects us. Your dollars are what drive the products, so choosing to buy things that aren't going to harm the planet will force more and more manufacturers to change their packaging.
I so admire Lauren Singer. She can and is living a zero waste lifestyle. She is a real social entrepreneur as she is helping to make the practice of a zero waste lifestyle for the masses a reality.

i live in NY and pass by here all the time. ive only been inside once but they have really cool products. it’s a big variety and i haven’t purchased much but i’ve been wanting to go back anyway. glad that she’s getting more recognition.
We all need to convert to this lifestyle if we want to save our planet as well as what beautiful creatures are left on it.
I know this chick, glad to see she made this a business, because she inspired me years ago. I felt really bad about having to take trash out every day when I discovered her.
If concerned about prices, try looking at local thrift store for items, or asking for items on local buy & sell groups :)

She says waste problem shouldn't fall into consumer but to businesses. But the consumers have to pay waaaay much. So the consumers are 'paying the price'

correct, you paid attention in economics 101. No cost is bared by the business, everything that puts a "burden" on business is simply factored into the end price of the product. Its not that "ebil business" is mean spirited or vengeful. its just how economics works, if you are not making a profit from an activity, there is no point to do that activity.
Our government subsidizes a lot of big business, so your tax dollars are heading to their pockets, just not in a way you notice, and you’re ending up with the shorter end of the stick.
Well, if you are your own boss, and your income is your company, even if you paid out of pocket, that would technically be the company's money - because you own the company. Of course it doesn't legally go this way, (depending on the business model, you might not be personally responsible for the economy of the company with your whole wealth) but it's the same money going around. And the company has to make money, in order to pay you, in order for you to pay. And the company's money comes from the customers. So in order for the customers' prices to be low, the company has to sell a lot, to pay you, for you to pay. Am I unclear enough? The company owner doesn't have other money than your money, so they can't pay with it either.
The price is paid in our taxes.

Tbh, it is in NYC where the cost of living is high, and she is also running this small business, so she has to set the prices higher to make money.

I was my dream once to have a sustainable store of sorts, where you bring in your own container to get bulk items other than food (lip gloss, shampoo, dish soap, window cleaner, whatever it was.) and to provide reusable containers for most things and most if not all of the items would be featuring local artisans and the like. Sadly most of us don't have the capital to start a business

I've thought of the same thing before. Don't lose hope! The idea of "thinking globally and acting Locally" is gaining traction.
just think, over 100 years ago, you used to have local shops/general stores where you would take your own cloth sack or box, fill it up with what you needed, usually in glass containers or their own small sacks, or just loose in a bin to pick from, and take it home to your own cupboard. The glass container could be reused unless broken, and the sacks used for other produce could be re purposed even into any number of things, even clothing or children's toys.
Its almost like the consumerist lifestyle that spawned big box grocery and department stores created all this problem for the sake of corporate profits and easy freight logistics! shocking!

People complain about the price. WHY? by paying $27 for a stainless steel razor you are saving time and money in the long run by not having to constantly keep buying them and throwing them away, eventually paying more throughout the years.
Also, instead of having to rub the deodorant using my fingers, i recycled an empty deodorant bar and poured my mixture in it to let it harden. Works equally as great.

How far away is the factory from the store? Do the items come from a wholesale company? What is the purpose of moving an online company into a physical store? Is it necessary for a company to have a physical location in this era? I'm really curious about how much it would cost to franchise this.

Yes, cost of a retail store tremendously increases the price. Add retail workers, utilities, and insurance. But Amazon and Ebay are charging sales taxes now, so online isn't always cheaper anymore.

We all understand this is more expensive and inaccessible for many people. But everyone has to understand the cost of making say, a metal straw is greater than the one of a plastic straw. Yes, it is awful a lot of people can't afford this. However, it is still a very good idea and maybe in the future, if people show an interest, more of these products will be created. If that happens, the cost goes down.
You get discounts at most coffee shops for brining your own cup and straw. It's 30 cents at Starbucks, but it adds up eventually. This is an example of a current incentive to reduce plastic waste

I don't know bro, it seems way better to just drink your beverage(s) without straw because:
1. It takes air thus would make your belly sick
2. You need to buy & then clean the straw everyday & bring it around wherever & whenever you go
3. You can just easily gulp your drink a little like a boss in something like British tea party manner
4. Too much produce straw factory might consume the source ingredients in our planet (metal), thus might be another issues of matter
This is just an opinion though cause I know that there are people who love to use straw for drinking which I won't blame. I must however say that using metallic straw isn't the only option to stop plastic.

I haven't used a straw in 45 years, don't drink bottled water as I have a tap and don't live in Flynt. Most of the garbage I make in a day is recycleable or green bin waste for compost. I'm lucky If I make 4Lbs of landfill a month!

I am using Package Free products in Texas (ones which I cannot easily find locally), they are a bit expensive but they definitely hold their value in the long run and are quality products. Love the work Lauren has done - not only with Package Free and Simply & Co, but by promoting other sustainable and green businesses, and giving tips from beginner to advanced levels from someone trying to reduce their carbon footprint to someone living zero waste lifestyle.
Th prices are insane. I use the same kind of dish washing brush she sells. Her price is 12,50$ while I buy them at my local store for 2€???
Her store is in nyc. How much would you charge for that product if you had to pay retail space in nyc.
Also to make her business zero waste must take extra money. I don't mind spending extra if it's for a good cause but I understand how this greatly limits the accessibility.
Desirée S you can go and explore not only one store tbh I found for example shampoo bars for 3$ which is ok price instead of buying it fro, special store, but I like the idea of zero waste and i wouldn't mind pay a little bit more but I know it won't be for everyone (bc of budget)
Desirée S They do not use any plastics and are reusable. That takes a lot of money to create.
Desirée S and that cheap plastic Walmart version would go to landfill after about a few weeks-months use and stay around for thousands of years.

Those of you complaining about prices need to realize something: Paying $12 for a product that might otherwise cost you $2 is so that it lasts longer. If you have to replace the $2 product every couple of months but the $12 product holds up better because it is better quality and needs fewer replacements then the cheaper product actually ends up costing you MORE in the long run. Basic economics....I agree accessibilty is key though so she needs to keep her prices fair and in check if her goal is for EVERYONE to be zero waste. That can't happen if no one can afford it....just things to consider from her side and ours :-)
I've been living an eco friendly and plastic free life by switching to natural alternatives for everything, such as:
1. Using chew sticks for dental health instead of toothbrush and toothpaste
2. Gave up on bathing soaps I bath with just water, and my skin remains the same infact feels healthier
3. Gave up on shampoo and my hair are healthier, I don't face dandruff or any scalp issues. Started to use an egg as a shampoo and it really works
4. Using more and more of paper, glass and metal and eliminating plastic wherever I can

I wish Whole Foods would make it easier to be waste free. There's no need for a new plastic bottle every time I buy dish soap, shampoo, detergent, etc

It's infuriating sometimes to see that we have solutions to solve serious issues, but people refuse to accept them. I use a straw almost evryday and have wanted to purchase a metal reusable one so I'm not using plastic ones, but my mom refuses to let me get it because she thinks it's stupid and a waste of money.
Kate Baldwin oh thank you sherlock. I totally didn't think of that. Have you considered maybe I have? It's not easy when I don't have a driver's license or a car to drive to work. And even if I did have a job where would I get the straw from? I don't have a credit card to buy online and I haven't seen any straws in stores near my house.
music box well I don't have lunch money. Eat homemade lunch and I don't think it's worth the effort I finish highschool in a little over a year. I'll probably get a credit card or find something by then. I think the giant pack of straws my mom already purchased will last till then.

That company does a subscription refillable service. You take it back to refill it as many times as you want or when you need a refill you order a new one and they'll send you a return label for the other one. So you're basically paying $30 for x amount of time.
Conditioner is a luxury item. There are natural oils in the scalp, that you can distribute by brushing your hair. Maybe it doesn't work for everyone and with every shampoo, but I have long blonde hair, and I used conditioner for years, but then I stopped, and nothing basically happened.

Thing is, no one has the money to buy these things. But we should remember that some things are false economies and you end up spending more by not investing in something durable. But where do you get that money to invest?
a clementine by simplifying your life and cutting out unnecessary and frivolous purchases. Once I became more minimalist it was easy to save more money bc I no longer aspired to have the things most around me wanted. The money I've saved I put towards investing not only in myself but in things I truly care about, like stores and people with ideas like this. It's truly freeing!

ChristopherisnotanAI - Lies. I lived in a food desert where half my income went to rent and the other half to food. I walked everywhere & planned my trips accordingly. I also didn't buy clothes unless I needed it, and usually from thrift stores. I had 1 couch & a TV I propped on a chair. I had a picnic table for a dining table. My bed was an air bed. I lived frugally & without waste. By doing this, I was able to take lots of trips, paying everything for both my sister & I. Mind you, I had 2 mouths to feed. So it's possible, if you value experiences, ppl, and the environment. Ppl should invest in a fulfilled life, not a life filled full (of stuff).
i dont give a shit about this zero waste bunk. But i do agree that it is almost always better to invest in a quality product and buy it once vs "saving" money by buying the cheap version over and over.
As to where you get the money to invest in a quality product. Its called financial planning. And it starts with NOT shopping at a store like this that charges you 30 bucks for a 12 ounce jar of detergent. plan better.
