Korg OpSix // Glitch Ambient [no external FX]

  • I have always been curious about the new line from Korg, including the OpSix, Wavestate, and Modwave, but I've never had the chance to try one in person.
    A friend of mine came to the rescue, and he lent me his OpSix (while he got the chance to keep my Digitone, a sort of FM Exchange Program, if you will).
    At first, I wasn't impressed by the raw sound quality.
    Many of the FX are so so, the basic filters are plain out garbage, and the general accessibility is still not my favorite, especially coming from a PRO3 or the aforementioned Digitone.
    BUT, I decided, as my usual, to just completely MISUSE the instrument, so I tried to create a "modular" patch, to let the Poly-6 filter shine, move stuff with LFO, granularize with the more than welcome FX, and in the end have fun.
    I can't say I am ready to change my (mostly negative) opinion on the instrument, but it sure has some sweet spots here and there, and I'd like to share them with you.
    Hope you'll enjoy ✨

    I just set up a little Gumroad stuff, after you suggested it to give out the patch 🧡
    I've always gave it out for free, and I will keep doing that, but many of you asked for a way to support me, so here it is.
    You will get the BigPad patch, plus the "Nostalgia" patch, emulating a broken tape for lo-fi fun (sorry, I didn't save the one from this video).

    LOVE it! Sounds like an alien ecosystem with frogs and birds and insects. And on the OpSix no less, which is not terribly easy to do live tweaking on.

      RIGHT? When I started getting these nature sounds I was sooo happy, and I listened to it for quite a long time before trying to give a sort of sense to everything and hit record.
      Glad you liked it 🧡

    East meets West...beautiful...a lot of ambient is lacking intelligent design.

      Exactly!
      And I admit I liked the OpSix more in this form, rather than traditional FM.

      @@Dexba Yea it's an amazing instrument. I own the wavestate and I pre-ordered it back in jan of 2020. Love the fact that you can take FM to a whole new level. But yes, there will be an influx of people going through videos trying to learn this instrument.

      @@powermix24 The Wavestate too seems like a great piece of gear!
      And after I started exploring the mod matrix for the FXs, I started appreciating the OpSix on a whole new level!
      (yeah, it would be the right moment to release more content about the OpSix 🤔)

      @@kantoendrato You did good! At $329 there is really no reason NOT to buy an OpSix, it is priced almost like the new Volca FM2, almost a third of a Digitone, wow.
      Have fun with it :)

    Did you save this patch, or do you remember how you created it? Would love to explore similar places with it!

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately not!
      It was my first night with it, and inadvertently I didn't even save the patch for myself 🥲
      Anyway, if you want to get in the same zone, the process was like this:
      - arpeggiator on random latched with pentatonic scale
      - Poly-6 filter with high resonance and modulation over envelope amount, cutoff, and even resonance itself; the more modulation the better
      - FX, reverb is always welcome, but what I was playing with was the glitch/granular (I don't remember the name, and I don't have the OpSix anymore to check); plus you can also modulate that, instead of moving it by hand like I am doing here :)
      Hope you will get something useful out of this 🧡

      I agree! Even the owner, that lent me the OpSix before selling it, said something like "yeah, maybe I should consider keeping it, if that is coming out of it" :)
      I will keep exploring, I don't want to rush my judgment

  • @willswitchcraft
    @willswitchcraft 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I totally agree, I feel it has a 'sweet spot' (as almost all gear does), but it's perhaps still a bit limited in many respects. I recently spent some time with my close friend's Wavestate. I wasn't impressed at all, everything was too busy and overdone....then, I found the Randomize feature, and was just blown away with what I found inside.............anyway.......a very interesting perspective and upload......

    • @Dexba

      Thank you a lot! 🧡
      And I am glad we share a similar opinion over this line from Korg.
      I still firmly believe that if they released desktop versions of the trio, people would have been more enticed (and also more impressed by the capabilities of the instruments).
      I've seen some pictures of people owning all three of them, and it's quite comical the amount of space wasted by the three short keyboards.
      Three octaves are totally NOT enough for instruments like these!

      So much new gear coming out these days.....So many ways people use gear - I'm not sure how these companies can fully navigate this changing market....

    I’m with Modeswitching on that alien ecosystem vibe! This would go great as background music in one of the Avatar movies or something alike ✨

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, long in the future, I will start implementing some kind of visuals too, because they would be very beneficial to the message the music is already conveying 🧡
      But for now, I don't want to get down also that rabbit hole, because the chances of getting lost are pretty high :)

  • @itsdrawkcab5899
    @itsdrawkcab5899 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really love the sounds you got out of this. It almost sounds like a multitimbral synth here! Was wondering how do you find it compares to the Digitone? I often hear how the opsix lends its self to be more versatile sound designing wise, and the Digi has the famous sequencer, but are there any other differences that stood out to you?

    • @Dexba
      @Dexba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it all started by that: I was so used with Digitone to just layer one sound over another, that I felt like I was missing some fun with just the live playing on keyboard. (I know you can split the keyboard and also do some basic sequencer trick, but obviously still miles away from the Digitone). As for your question!
      The first thing is the interface: Digitone is very well organized; can get fairly deep if you start programming it thoroughly, but everything is nicely laid down, the encoders are way better (you can push them or use the Func to access a stepped mode), while on the OpSix you're scrolling a lot of menus you don't really understand at first glance and it took me SO LONG it's almost embarrassing to find how to adjust properly the envelopes.
      Honestly, under many aspects, the OpSix feels like an old project.
      I have Digitone, with its crazy sequencer, but I also have the PRO3, with its dead easy way to "patch" modulations: you press Source, touch/move your source, then press Destination, touch/move your destination and boom, you're ready to go.
      No 4-pages menus and arrow keys that are all horizontal but sometimes they change stuff that's vertical and you never know what is what.
      It's a digital synth, with A LOT of unused space on the panel, no excuse for that.
      As for the sound, yeah, it can (and note: can) sound better than Digitone, but with a digital synth what you're buying is the interface: Dexed is free, the DX7 legends are available for like half the price of a OpSix, so no really need to bother with this one, I'd say

      @@Dexba have you see what Oscillator Sink does with this? Any interface takes learning. DN sure does too. OpSix is much deeper, especially since version 2.0. Though the keyboard sucks so bad, it might be worth it to get a computer and any keys (with AT, what were Korg thinking!) and OpSix native...
