    I love how some of you "experts" on here are comparing 2016 technology with 80's tech and actually feeling proud of yourselves. I also love how the "experts" are comparing much lighter cars and their acceleration numbers with this luxury coupe. As an owner of an 88 Mark 7 let me say this much. The car is not a quarter mile demon by any means and really should never be viewed as such. However the car is a great cruiser and has a super smooth ride that really epitomizes the idea of a luxury coupe. On the freeway it has a nice low revving 5.0HO and is just silky smooth. You just have to respect the vehicle for what it is and for the technology that was around at the time.

      As a former Mark VI owner..I always appreciated how good the Mark VII looked..especially the Bill Blass edition in dark blue. Sadly..Lincoln no longer builds cars this comfortable or reliable and has lost it's way. Hopefully one day I will once again own a Mark VI.

      LJSJIUJITSU:
      1st of all, it's not a 5.0.....as usual American car makers lie about almost everything about their vehicles. I remember back in the back, the horrible build-quality was so evident from hundreds of feet of away.
      The Mark 7 was/is nothing more than than a tacky Ford Fairmont...lots of chassis flex included as Standard Equipment.
      A Honda Accord hatchback (3rd Generation) was a more refined vehicle for half the Price. Even a Toyota Supra for $5,000 less than the Mark 7 was a better car...all the goodies like smooth in-line 6 and Independent Rear Suspension.
      It's why then and now, the Big 3 can find few Retail suckers willing to buy their garbage.

    • @kgbeezr75
      @kgbeezr75 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      D McNamara You're kidding, right? In 1984 the Honda Accord was a tin death drap with an 85 horsepower thrasher under the hood, and the Mark was never intended to compete with the Toyota Supra. Totally different cars for a totally different audience.
      Fast forward to 1990 and the story is the same except an Accord had a buck twenty five under the hood and did 0-60 in something like 12 seconds with an automatic gear slammer and a deafening roar. Why would you even mention those cars on a review of the Mark? You've essentially created an automotive straw man on which you built a curiously vague slam of a car you don't really seem to know that much about. And i'm a Honda guy (owner of an LSC at one point in history) with no loyalty to American cars, but come on...seriously.

      kgbeezr75:
      1984 Accord was the Second Generation Accord (mid-cycle refresh;which in turn was a re-skinned 1st Generation Accord). The 3rd Generation which rode on a wider Platform and longer wheelbase and was a sign of what the 4 Generation Accord would be was a better car than than a 1984 LSC gas or BMW powered turbo diesel...and yes faster than the oil burner version.
      Toyota Supra was a more refined car than the LSC...my friend in high-school then received a Brand New Supra (Mark 2)....it was the ultimate roadtrip car for us....quiet,filled with gimmicks/features, and peppy for the times.If my memory is correct,many automotive Journalists described it as the best GT in the World regardless of price or Country of origin.
      The 4th Generation Accord was very quiet...it's why it (the Accord)has remained the Number 1 Retail selling spot in the USA car market since then. Sorry, Camry Retail sales don't even close to the Accord when you discount Camry Fleet sales;which in most cases are sold at break-even or at loss in many cases when all expenses are added-up. I have never been in any Accord that had a "deafening roar" as you described.

    • @Clarkecars
      @Clarkecars 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Really? "My friend in high school" tells me all I need to know. Well, I was in the business then and you can stuff your "magic little rice burner" where the sun doesn't shine. I recall now how much I despised your type back then. You have no idea what you are talking about and likely perceive Japanese owned Consumer Reports as the Bible. The Mk 7, unlike the junk peddled by GM, though to their credit a V6 full sized Pontiac or Buick got better hwy fuel economy than most rice cans. Between GM and arrogant "Japan is better" types such as yourself we are lucky there are any American cars left in production. BTW: the Fairmont you deride introduced rack and pinion and McPherson strut to low priced mid-sized cars. It also had some of the lowest repair cost in the industry at the time. I might also point out that nearly all domestics were safer than Asian imports in collisions. I joined the auto industry in 1978 and retired from it in 2009. During that time I managed numerous new car franchise dealerships including Subaru and Hyundai. I recall Japan's trade practices and deceptive advertising. The Japanese have never built sedans the equal of Europeans. I take great pleasure in knowing that Hyundai and KIA have overtaken Japanese dominance in the industry and Ford is still going strong without accepting the fascism of the Obama administration as GM did. Chrysler, unfortunately, was sold to Mercedes by a former GM exec so they could gain distribution and milk Chrysler as a cash cow during Chrysler's successful era with the redesigned Ram pickups, Sebring convertibles, minivans (that were head and shoulders above Previa and Odessy which got horrible fuel economy) and the "cab-forward" Concordes and Intrepid, which I would happily put up against an Accord. BTW thanks for your "patriotism." Sarcasm from a VN era Marine.

    Kind of crazy how much changed in 5 years, between the ship sized Mark V of 1979 and this car. I'm sure anybody who had one of those old 70's battle-cruisers and traded it in on a Mark VII were blown away by the handling and better road manners.

      +Jacob Barros Because for one thing, it's extremely unreliable. The surface you're driving on has a huge impact on the noise levels, as does the wind blowing that day, and even just where you position the microphone can play a major difference. Try moving your head around in the car at speed and you can easily validate this.

He call me back the next day and asked if it was drivable and he’ll it was but brakes would pulse way to much when applied. The 1984 model was a new design built on the Fox Body with 5 bolt hubs and rear disc brakes. I wonder if it used the same front rotors and rear axle shafts as the Mustang SVO? I shake my head as to how unbelievably cheap Ford was not offering as an option 5 bolt hubs and rear disc brakes on non SVO Mustangs and Capri’s. The 1978 Ford Fairmont had 5 bolt hubs and wheels. Ford changed to 4 bolt hubs and wheels on all of the Fox Body’s for the 1979 model year. For the people who have never heard of the 1978 Fairmont having 5 bolt hubs, I had two coworkers delivering pizza at Pizza Hut in the late 1990’s. Tim had a 1979 Fairmont which had a flat tire. His spare was bad. He asked the other driver Marty if he could borrow the spare from his 1978 Fairmont and Marty said I would except my 1978 has 5 bolt wheels.

      Hi Dean. Yeah I had to leave Fordsix because of a local guy with mental problems was on there who I had to go to the local police about stalking me. I still don’t know what name he was using on there. I haven’t seen him in 4-1/2 years and I’m hoping that he left town and I never see him again. I think I said before I left Fordsix I was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2013. I’ve had Lyme since the early 80’s. The last 6 years has been quite a battle with Lyme disease but I’m still working. I have three 2.3 Rangers 2004, 2009 and 2011. I regret having to sell my 1994 F250HD with the 300-6 and ZF 5 speed 6 years ago. The clutch slave failed and I wasn’t feeling good enough to repair it. I miss people on there like Lazy JW and a few others.

    It was a groundbreaking design at the time. Sporty and luxurious. Interior was lame as it was similar to lesser Ford brands. The same steering wheel design could be found on the Ford Tempo. Uggh. Even the dash was similar to the Taurus and Tempo. At least a Cadillac's dash looked nothing like a Caprice. Nice attempt at the diesel market with the BMW share but a little late to the game as GM had soured USA car buyers on anything diesel at this point.

    I don't understand that 0 to 60 time. I had a 1997 Buick Riviera with a similar weight in a 4-speed transmission and it's at 0 to 60 in 7.0 sec. (One night, I got 6.8). Maybe it was all the emissions crap that they had on there in the early 80s?

We now have beautiful headlamp designs in many cars the world over, even the inexpensive ones! It's cool to think how much a small regulation change like this has had so much impact on automotive design.

      ***** Doug, I don´t disagree with you but in my situation, I replaced my old, sealed beams on my 2001 Cherokee Sport with an aftermarket Hella brand set-up that gave me two new glass lenses and replaceable bulbs for around $60. While a sealed, old school replacement headlight only costs $15 to replace, a Hella replacement bulb for my new lighting set is only $8 per bulb on Amazon. The increase in light and overall safer driving experience at night is well worth the premium.
