What makes horror scary? Easy, the Goblin.

Real talk, I really do buy the "death breaks all tension" argument because I personally find it to be true. I've been playing Alan Wake and every time there's a cheap ass death I no longer find whatever situation I'm in scary, I just find it to be a chore, although maybe that reflects on AW rather than the concept as a whole. Even after death in RE2make I was still pissing myself.
Second thing is the whole unknown aptitude point is really well put, it's something that I've felt before, but never put into words, so kudos.

death breaking tension is a thing for almost all mediums, if a character dies in a movie the question of "will they survive?" has now been answered, same thing with video games, except of course, you can try the trial again (most times).
of course games can finesse things and maybe build tension off a death (weirdly enough a game like dark souls does that with the bloodstain mechanic) but imo, death removing tension isn't necessarily a bad thing, ebbs and flows are needed, it can't be all tension all the time.

    Damn
You are one of the creators I stumbled upon where I always know that your video will be worth watching. But that warning at the start made so much sense to me.
Knowing why something works can ruin the illusion of it working for some people. And I am one of those "some people" for sure if my life experiences have taught me anything.
I had to stop watching this video even though I was looking forward to it.
Couldn't you have waited to make this one when you had like a bajillion subs and views and one person's lack of watchtime wouldn't have hurt you as much
    I'm so pissed for you

Silent hill 1,2, and 4 are some of my favorite horror games. Great video.

Happy to hear you enjoyed Signalis, I've also played it on hard and before the Rule of Six was even something you could opt out of and had a blast. I did notice some respawning resources as well, but for the overwhelming majority of the game I played in a very conservative way, weaving through as many enemies as I could.
If anything I think the game could've been scarier by having limited saves, I often found myself traveling to and fro the closest save room at every single step of progress as it really cost nothing to walk for a bit. I also made sure to flare the enemies that could've been dangerous on those paths so there was really no tension in those moments.

I think you should play Darkwood, I normally don’t get scared but the two games that scared me the most was Darkwood and Lethal company single player, I remember being hunched up in the dark while playing in a corner of my room at 1 to 2 am getting nervous at the sounds of knocking and hearing the sounds of things moving around.

Generally speaking, I think that people should be more comfortable with not finishing games. I'll frequently stop playing games, completely satisfied with the time I spent with them, because for one reason or another I found that continuing to play would harm the experience I had up until that point. My go-to example is Fire Emblem: Three Houses - I stopped playing after I had spent like eight hours recruiting Dorothea and she died almost immediately. I set the game down and never came back, and I think that's fun - e-grieving is cool, actually. To that end: yeah, cranking survival horror difficulty up to the top and accepting that you genuinely might not be able to complete the game is cool, actually.

I wouldn't take this approach with any other type of media frankly, so I wouldn't with videogames either.

To be fair if you like a horror franchise you shouldn’t really play resident evil. RE is action over horror and that’s not a bad thing. Silent hill really pushes horror. While Resident Evil really pushes action and explosions. I love both but I love them for different reasons.
