My friend was a huge Duran fan from the beginning for life. He’s being buried today so I’m playing his favorite Duran Duran songs. In the pre-Internet days, he tracked down the passage that Simon is reciting in the video. Rest in peace, Joel.
It is songs like these of Duran Duran's that many casual radio listeners never hear that show what a fully fledged out band with so much talent these guys have. Love it.
Criminally underrated track. They really were video pioneers. No one else was doing this sort of thing in the very early 80’s. The Shakespeare at the beginning gives it the perfect creepy vibe.
I couldn’t agree more. So creative innovative And nothing fake about it. The real thing. It’s like a mini movie. And the dialogue during the dark yet moving of the beginning of the song the instrumental why in the hell wasn’t this A hit. It makes that damn song with Justin Timberlake sound like a preschool melody. And that still pisses me off that Duran Duran Would stoop to that level and let Justin Timberlake invade the Duran Duran sacred circle.
Yet this one video was released and went mainstream in the UK in November 1982... Strangely Michael Jackson yells in his video and runs from Zombies in Thriller, which released just one year TO THE MONTH later in November 1983 Coincidence?
Totally agree. This is one of the creepiest yet smooth songs. This was WAY fucking ahead of its time. Still one of my favorites from them. The journey they take you on is just beyond anything else that was happening then. The calm, the crescendo then calm then... oh it's a roller coaster. So good
Saw them recently and they opened with this number. Hearing those eerie synths in the low lights and effects gave me some serious chills as the concert began made it one hell of an opener.
I was at the Tampa show and when they opened with this, I lost my mind! You could tell who the hardcore Duranees were by who was singing along to this!
For those of you who weren't alive during the MTV glory days, this band made MTV. So ahead of their time, every video they made was an artistic masterpiece. Not just pretty boys, but seriously talented. They were the whole package ❤
Was more a "John" girl then, but hey, I just love bass players. But Simon came very close in as second. This video oh, how I wanted to be on that night boat back in early 80-ies.
Now that you mention it, I'm seeing tons of evidence for that. The makeup design, the scene with the crab, the locale, the cinematography, etc. Wow. I can't believe there's a Duran Duran video referencing Zombi 2 and I didn't even know about it until recently.
What a privilege for being raised in the 50's! My parents have shown and talked about the fun they had when people were never home, people socialized, people had fun, and nobody sat behind a screen!
my second fave duran video of all time! the acting! the shakespeare! nick's wrong timing with the mirror! john's scream! andy and nick working together for once! the band getting mauled by a bunch of undead duranies. roger surviving in the end (he was my fave when I was a kid)!
The first time I saw this video back in 83 or 84 I was determined to find out what he was saying and where did it come from. So because of Simon Le Bon I was introduced to Shakespeare and that was the start of a new life that would have his works and Duran Duran music influence it to this day 34 years later. :)
Absolutely! I spent ages looking through the entire works of Shakespeare looking for this quote and ended up with a lifelong love of Shakespeare and I can say that I am lucky enough to have had a personal phone call from Simon- spoke to him for half an hour courtesy of my lovely brother and his lovely girlfriend Helena!
Also that;s one of the things that I love most about DD was that they wrote such weird and beautiful and poetic lyrics and the videos were and still are works of art ! and they had a sense of humour as evident in their interviews ! Saw them live in Australia in 2007 and they were still brilliant!Half the audience were in their forties and the other half were in the age grou p of 19-24 and when I spoke to the latter group what they loved about DD was what we had and still did like about DD!
Raw and artistic. No sellout, disposable pop here. First time hearing this song. Careless Memories is another unique piece of music on this album that is a must listen.
This bass line totally drives the creepy factor; The low-end usually does. My favorite bit to play is that dark B to G to open E at the end of 'echo me'. Always makes me raise my eyebrow on the G to E.
The B Side to the first three albums were quite dark (Night Boat, Chauffeur, Seventh Stranger). There’s more to this band than lipstick, boats and pop tunes.
Don’t forget Sekret Oktober. B side to Union of the Snake if I remember correctly. Admittedly, ‘twas a long time ago when we played b sides. What gifts. We are so lucky!
When I was a teen I loved it when Duran Duran came out with an 'Exclusive' video on MTV. My eyes peeled, getting lost in the story. Haven't had that desire since, really. Thanks Duran Duran! x
I remember going to a goth club in Enschede Holland in the late 80's and this track was played. I wonder how many people knew this masterpiece was Duran Duran?
One of my favourite Duran Duran songs. This to me proves that even after 30 years, the band was not just an 80's phase. I feel excited still when I see a video from them that to my knowledge had never released a video. As for Shakespeare and zombies; keep in mind that the group were doing what they were told to do. The video was the creation of a video producers imagination. Artistic creativity, for better or worse. I liked hearing everyone speaking throughout.
2021 brought me back to Duran Duran after seeing a guy sing Ordinary World on a singing competition. I am hooked all over again like I was when I was a teen! I lost 30 years of their music but have been caught up and now own all CD's! Thanks for sharing this video; I never knew it existed. They are the greatest! Let's get them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
I loved this video as a child. The video fits the music perfectly. I love the eeriness of it. And Simon is picture perfect! Love that first scene of him standing on the boat.
I have loved this band for ages ( I discovered them 14 years ago when I was a teenager) but this is the first time that I see this video. I don't understand the complaints. The video is awesome and so ahead of this time where zombies are mainstream. Anyway, if you still don't like the video, the song is just too good.

I had no idea they'd made a video for this song. Not until I just now stumbled on it here. I've been a huge Duran fan since '81 when I was in middle school. How did it take me nearly 40 years to learn of it?
Back in the day our local video store carried a video disc. My friends and I would rent it and a player for the weekend and watch the 8 or 10 videos over and over. Not sure how many times we rented it but I'm pretty sure we wore out the disc.

Duran Duran Love The 1981
Dark and doomy. I love this side of Duran Duran! Been a fan since 1983.
