Ferrari SF-24 aerodynamic development: Red Bull-style F1 "shark inlet" to maximize outwash effect

Following the Miami Grand Prix last weekend, Scuderia Ferrari wasted no time in intensifying their preparations for their upcoming home race at Imola next weekend. The two-day test session saw the team in action at Fiorano with four drivers - race drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, along with reserve/development drivers Oliver Bearman and Arthur Leclerc.
On the first day, the two development drivers took turns behind the wheel of the 2022 F1 Ferrari car, the SF-75, while Sainz conducted a test run with the current machinery equipped with FIA's latest version of spray guard.
The second day saw the reserve drivers continuing their work with the two-year-old SF-75. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz was joined by his teammate Charles Leclerc for a filming day. However, they opted not to continue experimenting with FIA's spray guard, focusing instead on accumulating mileage with a heavily-upgraded car set to debut next weekend.
Scuderia Ferrari thus concluded an important testing session with the 2.0 version of the SF-24 single-seater. Charles Leclerc spearheaded the effort at the team's home track in Fiorano, aiming to gather initial insights into the aerodynamic package slated for introduction at the next round of the 2024 Formula 1 championship, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola circuit. These insights will play a crucial role in developing understanding of the new upgrade package, which will undergo processing by Computational Fluid Dynamics tools within Ferrari's sporting management in the week leading up to the Imola Grand Prix. Through simulation, the setup for the seventh round of the 2024 Formula 1 season will be honed, an advantage the Prancing Horse aims to fully leverage moving forward.
Validating an upgrade is never straightforward for a Formula 1 team. On the contrary, the package often requires fine-tuning on the track through technicians' and drivers' setups to transition from subjective to objective evaluation. This process was undertaken in the first part of Friday with Charles Leclerc, who later handed over to his Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz. Enrico Cardile, Italian aerodynamicist and Ferrari's Technical Director, led the Maranello team in developing this new aerodynamic package, intended to enhance the speed characteristics of the Ferrari SF-24 and narrow the gap to Red Bull as the season progresses.
