The great maestro Nelson Freire has left us today. I came here to listen once more to his genius combined with Martha Argerich's wich was unparalleled! As a fellow brazilian, I feel that we lost one of the main symbols of culture that our country has ever had. Be sure that you will always be rememberd and your music still lives in our hearts. Can't help but to express the most sincere gratitude for your time here with us. Rest in piece Mr. Freire, and thank you!

I have always felt that Ms. Argerich is a unique pianist, with a flair for making pianism seem as natural as breathing. She is an inspiration to me. And to think she appears to do it without the least bit of effort.

Well-stated, and sometimes it just pierces the heart and opens a crevasse of pure joy. That this should happen at least partially at the celestial hands of my pianistic empress, Martha Argerich, is even better.

The valse became one of my top 3 moments of Rachmaninoff’s music, I am obsessed with that movement! Also, I love the chemistry between old friends such as Argerich and Freire, everything they played together is brilliant (La valse by Ravel for example)

Some people here complain about the speed, but as others (more knowledgeable!) point out, that is the speed the COMPOSER stipulated, and indeed, other performers slow it down probably because they are unable to do a good job of it otherwise. As for it being "mechanically" played... pffft! Anything but! A truly masterful performance by Argerich and Freire, two undisputed masters, of one of the most beautiful pieces by the masterful Rachmaninoff. Simply beautiful. Thanks for uploading -- I had the music, but it's nice to see the pianists playing as well.

    • @naftush
      @naftush 5 ปีที่แล้ว

On its being "mechanically" played, I wonder if the microphones (type or positioning) flattened out Argerich's and Freier's dynamics somewhat, creating this effect. Compare this video with th-cam.com/video/5Zjt9QTj6V8/w-d-xo.html, in which the dynamics are explosive.

Prayers for you, Nelson Freire, for divine healing accomplished by a special touch from the Great Physician. Jesus was told by a powerful man that if he only spoke the word his servant would be healed. And that's what he did! That word that Jesus spoke not only healed the sick, but also proved that he is the ultimate Healer: the Way, the Truth and the Life to all who repent and believe in Him.
This marvelous recording inspired me and my wife back in our days at Baylor University (over 20 years ago now), when we performed together on two pianos! What a breathtaking performance that will encourage thousands of young artists and millions of fans for years to come!

A live performance always risks being not as good as the performers are capable of. That's the nature. My favourite performance of this, however, remains Ashkenazy/Previn (yes, Previn - good grief!). Totally disagree with DoGreatArtistsGrowOnTrees. I'm more of a Haydn/Mozart/Bach person myself, but this is highly inventive and one of SR's best comps

Another vote for Ashkenazy/Previn from me. Previn was a very able pianist and one of the few to be equally competent in jazz and classical. Classical music snobs tended to look down their noses at him because of his jazz associations. That was their loss.

Me thinks you protest far too much regarding tempo out of perhaps your inability to perform great works at similar speeds! Maybe the fault is not is these remarkable artists but in your very jaundiced green eye! Now shut the hell up and quit your bitching! Please, I am at least a gentleman!

And please let us all remember that the great Martha Argerich was a Kennedy Center Honor Recipient only last year, and also please realize that the Kennedy Center Honors are reserved for the most exemplary and accomplished artists of the United States of America who have given to their art form over a long and distinguished career.

It's okay to critique a piece or performance without being to play it on their level. Technically and musically, they're obviously far more accomplished than pretty much all of us will ever be. That doesn't mean no one can judge their playing. Usually, when someone complains that a performance is too fast, what they're hearing is usually a lack of clarity or musicality that happens as a result of the speed of the performance. This was the case, at least for me, in the faster parts of the Waltz for example; the notes weren't sounding very clear and together and this was likely due to the speed.
That being said, it's a live performance, and it's not going to be perfect. I think the speed was fine.

they should give them some sort of contraption attached to their noses so that they can turn the pages by themselves and not bother these poor audience members to turn the pages for them. I mean it costs a lot of money to go to these performances and then you gotta turn the sheet music for them? outrageous

I agree with you wholeheartedly if, in fact, that's what happened in this instance. But rest assured, richard, that's probably not what happened here. As you may know, Argerich & Freire are both top-notch, seasoned professionals with world-renowned reputations. Typically, artists of this caliber bring their own page turners with them. So, you see, there would really be no need for them to ask people from the audience to 'help out' in this way. 🙂

Huh! well what do I know, i thought they put suits on some of the ushers and had them turn the sheet music for them. thanks for clearing that up for me. i agree, these are masterful performers, and this is a masterful performance.

To turn the pages, you have to be able to read music and understand what is happening at the bottom of the page to know exactly when to turn. Argerich has a photographic memory so she doesn't really need a score and Nelson has an incredible memory and probably doesn't need the score either. But it's safer. They have played this piece together hundreds of times. I heard them do it in London 50 years ago. Nelson is among the very great musician-pianists.

Are you serious?? 😂😂 do you think that first class world-known musicians as Argerich and Freire ask to the audience for two people to come on stage to turn pages??? ...yes you are serious. Well no problem, let's explain further for all the other people who might have the same doubt... In classical music concerts, pianists often bring their "page turners" which are usually other pianists (young professionals or so), who can actually take good advantage from the occasion. This can be indeed a very useful moment for their improvement as they can take a very close look at the masters playing, their fingering, their hand position, their use of pedal etc. Page-turners are paid (at least, in most countries, I think), and OF COURSE they are not taken from the audience!! You must be a musician to turn pages, because you must be able to read music.
