    It is worth saying that even if a "barn find" has no compression when you turn the engine it isn't necessarily the end of the road. Over the time that the vehicle has sat the piston rings can stick in their grooves on the piston or the valves can stick in the open position. It is worth taking the rocker or cam cover off to check that everything is moving freely. If it is, try putting a bit of diesel down the cylinders and leaving it for a week. The diesel will soften and partially dissolve any carbon build up in the ring grooves so you might find that when you turn the engine over again a week later the rings have freed up and you have compression again. Similarly if the valves are sticking try dosing them with penetrating oil once or twice a day over a week or so and then try again. That often gets things moving again. Generally though, with a barn find it would be best to assume that the engine is going to need a full rebuild as particularly with vehicles like this that have probably spent a good chunk of their later working life as off-road transport there isn't any road-worthiness testing done so they only get put aside when a major mechanical problem that renders them useless occurs and that often means the engine...

    • @mrme2483
      @mrme2483 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      heliarche i second this .... at worst just a light tap on the adjuster when its rocking, As long as it springs back up and doesnt stay down to get smacked by the piston..

    • @heliarche
      @heliarche 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Mr Me You can take the rockers off so you won't hurt the adjusters. Then you'll rotate the engine so that piston is down when you whack the valve. Rawhide or poly mallet works fine. If you can pump compressed air in as you do it that's even better. And some good penetrating oil. Hopefully this one didn't get scrapped. As shabby as it looks, I could work with it.

    Thanks for the video.
    .A couple points, putting oil with no zinc in an old motor is bad, they need zinc to lube the cam and lifters. Valves are most likely stuck resulting in no compression, remove the valve cover and pop the valves with a rubber mallet to free them. Lastly, why do you need to turn the engine with a breaker bar when it already turned over on the starter? Enjoyed the video, let me know if you need a junk tech guy, I've worked on garbage like this for years.

  • @hw015
    @hw015 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    my uncle one of these, nice project. pro tip for the dude pouring the oil in from the typical 1 liter bottles shown in the video, try rotating the bottle 180° so the neck is the high part of the bottle when pouring. the oil will stop gluggling out, and will pour smoothly. there's a reason most oil bottles are that shape. give it a try.
    im with everyone here, post updates pls. mad project

  • @brchrdsn

    That Scout has always been 12v. The resistor you found is more that likely the ballast resistor for the ignition system. Also, I'm guessing it has some bent push tubes from stuck valves. I've had that happen on engines that have sat for several years. Not a big deal to just break the valves loose with a hammer.

    One of my first jobs growing up in Hawaii was being a delivery driver for "Chicos" pizza. That company had a fleet of six of these little trucks like the one on this video. They all burned propane for fuel for some bizarre reason. I have to tell you that those trucks were bullet proof as I beat them with no mercy when I delivered pizzas. I found a little trick that I would amuse myself with. If I were to pass by one of my friends home, I would turn off the ignition key for about two seconds while the truck was rolling and to let excess propane into the engine then I would turn the key back on and then the propane would ignite with explosive force and a huge, LOUD bang would occur! I sure got a lot of laughs doing this.

  • @EdwinHenryBlachford

    hint: the starter motor is DC. It can be driven either way by swapping the +ve & -ve terminals. ( it also acts as a generator if driven ). Therefore, if in doubt on whether you have a negative or positive earth vehicle.. click the starter quickly. If the starter goes backwards, swap the battery terminals over. I say "starter" since the solenoid ( that big ol can on top of the starter motor.. may not throw out with reversed polarity so all you'd get then is a reverse spinning electric motor - not connected to an engine. I know AC Alternators are way more efficient.. but you just can't have this kinda fun eh..

    I'm commenting as I watch the vid. There's a hundred and one secret formulas for unsticking a humidity locked engine. Mine is to flood the cylinders with 50/50 marvel and kerosene for a week. If that doesn't do it, get some engine oil and heat it until it's smoking, VERY flammable at this point so be careful, and dump some of it in each cylinder. Give it half an hour and see if it goes. I don't like to crank a stuck engine with the starter but sometimes you have to...

    A good way to avoid your oil bubbling like that and spilling everywhere when pouring it in is to just turn the bottle so the flat side faces up, it gives the bottle constant air intake so it wont spill everywhere and create even more mess on your engine

    Where is the second video where you get it running. I'm sure there are stuck valves and 100 other issues but with the internet theses days everyone can work on old broke down stuff and usually find the parts they need. I would have purchased this and for any reason you couldn't get it running it can always be a part vehicle for yourself or others, and still no money lost. Dismantling and cleaning of every part is often required on any vehicle that sits for years. That's when you get the truest connection to the vehicle, it feels like you've resurrected or hand built it, and it gives you something very productive to do.

    Before you ever start this kind of find, never start it with the key...Unhook the coil wire and use a remote start(hooks to the starter motor)and rotate the engine this way...That way if any critter that may have chewed thru the wiring under dash does not catch fire...Always let your Mystery Oil sit for a couple hours prior to rotating the engine over...If it's an automatic check the fluid prior to starting also...Have a great day...

    What with the rust (7:58) and the required work on the motor, it seems the only thing stopping that Scout from being a hopeless, helpless, hapless, lost cause is the fact that it is not wrecked. Otherwise it would only be good as a parts car, in my allegedly humble opinion.

    No compression is probably stuck valves, pull the cover and wiggle them, they'd probably start to close.

  • @ticehiner3867

    The lack of compression is probably due to stuck valves hit them with a lubricant and break them loose and it will probably we compression.

  • @scrfce123
    @scrfce123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    0 PSI of compression? Something is wrong with that compression tester. To get 0 PSI, the piston from that cyl would need to be missing entirely.

      +Juan Gil Stuck VALVES plural. It's why they should have taken the valve cover off and sprayed some penetrating oil on the valve stems while tapping the rocker if they could have loosened the valves up first they might have gotten this thing running.

    Eh, find a dirtcheap carby to put on it, drown it in gas to get that one cylinder that has compression firing, and it might beat the other valves loose, or the gunk buildup on them anyway. Just today i got an old Volvo running again, it had NO compression measurable, but a lot of cranking and pouring fuel into the busted carburetors had it running like a champ in just half an hour. Now, to rebuild those fuelsquirters...

    you could get these with a 396 V-8... I had to use one to move boats around working for my father in law... his had no gas tank or brakes, but it had tons of torque.

    If one of your cylinders measure nothing.....then ok, if 2 or more measure nothing you have a gauge problem, or more than likely you have valves stuck open.
    Even if you had no rings on the piston, you would get 5 pounds or so. If you have a stuck valve (probably) you will not get anything.
    When you cranked the engine it turned the cam and pushed the valves open, however since they were corroded or rusty they jammed in the guides leaving both intake and exhaust valves open. Since this is not an interference engine the piston will not contact the valve.
    Take the valve cover off, spray the valves with ''let go'' and give them a few gentle taps right on the top of the spring, valve, keeper assembly with a piece of hard wood and a hammer (don't pound on the valve with the metal hammer)
    Crank the engine a see that the springs are returning the valves.
    Repeat process. If you have really stuck valves you will have to take the head off and disassemble the valve/spring/keepers. knock the valve out and probably have to replace the guide.

    The marvel mystery oil ejected from the engine from all 4 cylinders and you guys think the cylinders have 0 psi of compression? You have stuck valves buddy. The one cylinder that had compression was stuck on the compression stroke while the others were on different cycles.
