+Jou Baur Been there done that many times 30some years ago when I was a climbing bum (what they now call a dirtbag). You didn't need permits and we slept on the summit , sometimes using the cables sometimes not. I don't think I could put up with the crowds now but still your info is great for those who can. Thanks again.

what if I want to hike up at night?

I have never been there at night but I seriously doubt they keep a ranger there at night, so it's up to you.
You picking a full moon night?
      Ought to be beautiful.
Good luck, have fun, and be careful.

Daboodle would it be ideal to get to the base of half dome at lets say 4 am? To catch the sunrise and head back down in light or would the ranger check you when youre back down?

Do they let minors reserve for a permit?

When I checked it out Ranger Brian told me that you must have an adult apply for the permit for you and the same adult, (or the alternate trip leader,) actually pick it up for you.
This has to do with the fact that minors can't sign legally binding contracts, (which this is.)
I suggest contacting the rangers to ask for necessary details.
They should be able to help you at this number: 209-372-0826.

What if you want to go in a couple of months like September but you didn’t apply for the preseason lottery? Can you still get a permit?

    • @joubaur

You can try for one of the First Come first Served permits two days before you want to go, but they only hand out about 50 of those.
You can also walk out to the base and wait.
People whose friends don't show up usually offer to take someone else up instead, but you would meet those people at the backpackers camp or at the base itself.
      Good luck.

permits are DISGUSTING. If someone wants to go on vacation, do this or that they should NOT need Govern permission. crowds ? I'd think the Verneil falls part has to be more crowded and I consider it scarier than the H.D. cables - slippery, no cable on part.
zCrowds on H.D. route ? just put up a third cable, separate up / down. safer.
    permits are DISGUSTING.

Rick C Last summer was my first time attempting the pre season lottert to get a permit and after 2 months of waiting for a response I got DENIED it really is a lottery and a very hard one to win.

You are the one disgusting! How do you expect regulating millions of people visiting the YNP every year and hundreds of thousands of people wanting to hike up the Half Dome and at the same thing to preserve the place from deterioration from visitors daily use of the park? Do you prefer convenience of getting a permit over safety of the visitors? Now if you still couldn’t understand this little thing, then you are one disgusting, selfish prick on earth!

Skyclub Yeah does Rick C even been to places like the Half Dome? Chaos is all we’re going to experience if they stop requiring permits.
