Facebook blasts Apple over new privacy options for iPhone users

    Facebook on Wednesday ran newspaper ads, published a new website and ran blog posts outlining its arguments opposing Apple over a privacy change that it claims “threatens the personalized ads that millions of small businesses rely on to find and reach customers.”
    Facebook, in its blog post, argued that Apple’s new tracking rules are “about profit, not privacy,” and said it believes Apple is behaving anticompetitively by using control of the App Store in a way that benefits its bottom line at the expense of developers and small businesses.
    The company is running print and digital ads in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post that say: “We’re standing up to Apple for small businesses everywhere.” It also has a new website on an upcoming change to iOS 14 that affects how apps can use ad-tracking tools with Apple’s ad identifier, the IDFA.
    “Without personalized ads, Facebook data shows that the average small business advertiser stands to see a cut of over 60% in their sales for every dollar they spend,” Facebook’s print ad reads. “While limiting how personalized ads can be used does impact larger companies like us, these changes will be devastating to small businesses, adding to the many challenges they face right now.”
    The ad leads readers to a link for a website on Facebook for Business, which includes videos of interviews from business owners speaking out against the ad change. It also includes explanations of what will happen, and a “toolkit” to make posts with the hashtag ”#SpeakUpForSmall” to talk about the change.
    Apple will soon be making a huge change to settings on users’ iPhones in the name of privacy, and it will fundamentally change mobile advertising on those devices. It will take a privacy option that was previously buried deep in users’ phones and put it front and center when they open an app, which is expected to dramatically impact the ability of advertisers to target ads the way they have been since people likely won’t opt in.
    Facebook has been outspoken about the change since it was announced in June, accusing Apple of moving the free, ad-supported internet into paid apps and services, where Apple can take its 30% cut, and crush small businesses’ ability to do personalized advertising.
    In its blog post, Facebook also made the consumer-facing argument that apps and websites that were once free may start charging people for services or be forced out of business because they can no longer offer free products supported by advertising.
    “Paying for content may be fine for the well off, but many people just don’t have room in their budget for these fees,” the blog post, written by Facebook VP of ads and Business Products Dan Levy, says.
    Facebook reassured investors that it will not be severely impacted by Apple’s change to iOS.
    “We will be fine,” said Levy on a call with reporters Wednesday. He said the company has already been factoring this into its expectations for Facebook’s overall business, which he called “large and diverse.” But he said the impact will be greater on creators and small businesses.
    Facebook also argued that Apple isn’t “playing by their own rules,” and said the company isn’t subject to its own iOS 14 policies. An Apple spokesman disagreed, telling CNBC its own apps and services have to comply with its tracking rules and that its own ad network, called SKAdNetwork, is free for developers and Apple doesn’t make any money off it.

      Nah FB got a point imo. I use targeted ads which helps me reach the right people, and it’s very effective and im not bothering people that are not interested in my work at all. so this is a big L for small creators/businesses unfortunately

      @@nakelittle really??? Cuz I get tons of adds - by default cookies - that annoys me, I close them a second they pop up...
      They were delivered to me "based on my interest" paid by people like you...delivered by company like Facebook...
      No one can read a mind (so to know who is interested in what)
      But I have a right to my privacy, opt out from that c..p.
      Thought i understand - you are trying to sell, so you want the opportunity to blast as many people you can, hoping you find someone who will buy. I get it.
      No, you are not there for "people who are interested in your stuff" cuz those - those would dig you up and find you. And trust me - on internet.. people can find anything if they are looking....🤷🏻‍♀️
      Example: people who are into fights - they know who is Tyson. Tyson doesn't need to be blasting thousands of innocent people with his adds. People who are into UFC will find him.
      Now, there I am...Im looking on internet for "famous people with ear" as Im writing some homework for school (I mean like Van Gogh)..and Tyson pops up. I read about him..maybe I can use that for my work...
      But since ever then, im getting ads for UFC, links to fighters... Not interested.. but it keeps coming...cuz once I read... I can't unread it lol. I know - they try to target me, hoping im gonna spend money on that.
      And just like you, they say same things...
      I keep saying NO THANK YOU, STOP BOTHERING ME!
      So we are here talking about euphemism. Euphemism of what businesses actually are about.

      @@Dexterosa yeah well tyson is mega famous already so that wont be hard to find him, kinda bad example brother. and also just know you will not see less ads beacause of this, you will only see ads that has lesser chance of being in your interest. say you into gaming and there's a twitch-sponsored ad on your feed. now maybe it will be a nike sneaker ad instead even if you absolutely not give a s... about sneakers. and in my case - music it's about visibility not talent, a common saying is that music is 80% marketing and 20% music. why do you think people pay for Spotify playlisting? love it or hate it it is what it is my friend. and facebook ads have tremendously helped me find people that are into "drake/manila grey-type music" instead of me spending enormous amounts of money to push content into millions of peoples faces.

    Sad that everyone in the comments section thinks this is only a play for money. (which partially you are correct) but the biggest issue is the businesses that grow and run off of targeted ads will no longer be able to. Meaning a certain percentage of companies small and large will decrease which will directly impact our economy. Less profits means less employment opportunities, less money circulated, and making it harder for the average person to start their own business and succeed in todays economy. It's going to be very bad if this goes through.

    Yes because according to Facebook, not allowing a multi billion dollar company to collect extremely personal information about an individual (often including things about their offline life as well) and selling said info to BIG Companies for the expressed propose of hurting small businesses and furthering the growth of monopolies over consumer products is a bad thing?

  • @utkarshanand9706
    @utkarshanand9706 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Finding the target audience is the job of businesses themselves. For example, you’re not going to put a billboard advertising non-vegetarian food in a vegan neighbourhood, unless you want to lose money. On television, it would be the right time/show on the right channel, where you’d want to put your ads. Personally, I don’t really feel like Facebook’s or let’s say, TH-cam’s ad targeting algorithms work that well. For example, I watched a video on Bloomberg’s channel a couple of hours ago and was greeted with Oreo ad. Similarly, I see a lot of Schneider Electric, Accenture etc. ads on CNBC channel. This feels more to me like those companies are trying to target consumers themselves, just like on television, rather than algorithms figuring it out for them, because I’m certainly not a target consumer based on my watch/search history. I feel like this is another case of overusing a new trend that pops up every now and then, like machine learning. I’m also quite sure that the 60% figure that you’re talking about comes with multiple asterisks.

    • @fjabri
      @fjabri 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your wrong you don’t know how digital advertising works, you think someone is choosing each individual ad you see? It’s an algorithm, based on targeting parameters set by the advertiser. These targeting parameters can’t be set if there is no data.... you made the case about TV channels.. what is the equivalent of TV channels to your FB feed?

    She is spot on. This doesn't hurt just facebook. This hurts all small businesses that run ads because they now need to spend a lot more money to advertise to their customers and small businesses already have the smallest margins and room for error to reach new people. Apple is making it seem like they are doing well for everyones privacy but they aren't. This is a way for them to squeeze money juice in their own cup.

    I did not like fb for extracting personal info. But now as a small business owner and an IT guy, IP based market segmentation makes so much sense for small businesses. FB is right in this case. Example: I run a company whose potential clients are international students aged 18 to 28 living in Australia or Asia. Why would I want to spend my money advertising people in USA or Europe? That does not make sense to me or people who will never be my client.

    I’m going to go the opposite way with this and say Apple doesn’t like giving away anything for free. Everything on an iPhone including music has to be paid for they couldn’t even give a free version of Apple Music. I’m not saying that to complain.

    • @ItsBrandoLuv
      @ItsBrandoLuv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apple Music is only $9 a month ($4 if you’re a student). That’s around the same amount as Spotify and Pandora premium is. When are you paying for Apple Music you are paying for an ad- free experience. All these other streaming services that are seemingly “free” are not free. They feed you ad after ad. A free version of Apple Music would mean they would have to feed you advertisement after advertisement, selling adversiters your data, something that apple is against. You say apple doesn’t like giving away free services but nothing is free. You’re paying for it one way or another

      Like you said, NOTHING is free. including the FREE platform you use that rely on ads. Imagine paying subscription to use youtube or facebook or IG. And the content creators arent going to make money and youtube will be useless.
      The internet changed a lot and created many jobs for people BECAUSE of ads. Nothing is free.
