    Klimova and Ponomarenko had a difficult free dance but I think what won Duschenays the gold here is the musicality in their routine. K&P had better technical content but their routine lacked musicality...especially compared to their routine in the Olympics a year later.

    I was fan of this couple as a teen and I steel have a kind of sentiment for them and figure skating of 90th. But from a time perspective and with much more knowledgeable eye I see their achievements and so called avant-garde force slightly different. Yes D&D were interesting performers, with strong personalities and taste for innovation which putted them apart from rest of the field and in some way overshadows their technical flaws. I steel love their performance of tango 1988 and Missing 1990. But as we know the real creative force behind them was Christoper Dean. Moreover, most of his choreographies wasn't even original pieces made by Dean especially for them. Programs were only clever rehashes of T&D show routines from late 80th. So what kind of "avant-garde" we are talking about. Unfortunately part II of Missing from worlds 1991 is so half-backed program, sloppy, forced to win the gold. It's so obvious that Dean knocked together random elements within 6 weeks and D&D weren't able to master high level of their performance in such short time.

    I loved the Duchesnays! They had a tremendous connection on the ice; Paul was the driving force in this duo, but he said numerous times he would only skate with his sister Isabelle. Many did not like them, but fortunately their 1991 World Championship and 1992 Olympic Silver Medal cannot EVER be taken away from them! They still have millions of fans who go on TH-cam daily to watch their performances! Isabelle and Paul, you two were the BEST!

      +bindi06 You are right! There was no mistaking the incredible magnetism and sensual appeal that Paul Duchesnay possessed. He was extremely attractive. I just don't understand why this couple gets so harshly criticized here - in a thread of their winning performance! Sometimes, expression and passion may win over accuracy. The audience back then appreciated that decision of the judges. I must admit that their Missing I program in '90 was even better and should have won.

    Maybe skill came from U.R.S.S. couple,(K&P is one of the greatest couples ever) but magic and carisma belonged to the French couple this time . The crowd chose their favourites. In the end, figure skating has a subjective part.

  • @GameofthronesMystery
    @GameofthronesMystery 9 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Always the crowd favorite no matter where they skated, not the best technically but untouchable artistically. This is the only sport in which artistry should win over technical abilities always but with today's format they have taken the creativity away, it's only a technical show off now.

    So unjust. With all the changes these two and K & P went through that year, their skating just wasn't as good as we were used to seeing. These two had to resort to doing a sequel with the same costumes, while K & P's rife with their coach resulted in a style that simply didn't work for them, marvelous as they are. And still both teams finished ahead of Usova & Zhulin, who were stunning from start to finish and should have won the competition easily. U & Z were robbed.

  • @officeaddict33
    @officeaddict33 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This program is a novelty. Some of the lifts are interesting but they skate on 2 feet a lot and there are very few close dance holds - that shows their weakness as dancers. Great crowd appeal and some cool tricks but the Russians are the ones with the greater skills.

    • @LWOPP
      @LWOPP 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paul was a truly great skater, and Isabelle was just never in the same league. Why he didn't team up with someone else I don't know. Siblings skating or especially ice dancing together presents problems all its own. Lifts and holds can look inappropriate or vulgar if you're not careful. Coming up with programs that don't look like romance on the ice is pretty difficult, and so they all look like novelties to one degree or another. IMHO

    • @josieshy2376
      @josieshy2376 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LWOPP So certain lifts only look vulgar when carried out by siblings? When you're watching a team and you don't know if they're siblings, lovers or workmates, you first ask what their relation is and then decide whether the lift looks vulgar or decent?
      ..and Paul and Isabelle had stated several times that they never ever considered skating with anyone else. Seriously, any other ice dancing lady would have paled next to Paul, his expression is unmatched.

    @intldawn Very true. The Duchensays FD which won them the FD portion and nearly the World title the year before was stunning. This was a last resort ripoff after their first FD of the season didnt work and had nowhere near the same effect as last year. K&P struggled all Worlds, although got better as they went, and their attempt at their new style didnt gel yet. Usova & Zhulin were easily the best and clearly should have won.

It seems like EVERY TIME I see one of their ridiculous and paltry performances they are performing to music of the Andes, skating too fast and non-sensibly (their movements LITERALLY make no sense with the music), and flipping around with the same type of costume on.
