Thirty years later, I still remember how exciting and innovative they were. Shame on the judges who didn't have the courage to give them the recognition they deserved.
@ROMANABSOLUT If my memory serves, they were born in France 🇫🇷 and the French were willing to afford more financial support. Typical of Canada 🇨🇦. Cheers from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
A brilliant programme choreographed by Christopher Dean, one half of Torvill anf Dean, the greatest ice dance couple of all time and he continued devising all of their startling routines.
I loved them so much back in the day. It was always so frustrating that they were never appreciated during their time by judges. I don't think this one was my favourite but I SO appreciated his role. That didn't really progress in ice dancing with them - some of the innovation did - but just that he at times is the one to focus on - not just the 'lead' in showing off the female. I like the equality between them.
They were my Favourite ice dancers. And at female Katarina Witt. I've seen ever from They a same performance as Philip Candolero George Of The Jungle. It was a gala program, but I don't remember in which Year. Jungle Dance? Tarzan? I don't know, but sure I've seen this. And I can't find nowhere...
It must be a challenge to choreograph for a sibling pair. You're limited in the stories you can tell since the usual romantic tangos and waltzes aren't really appropriate
Yes, it forced them to be creative through other means. And they were able to amazing jobs of creating drama and intensity on the ice back when they competed.
This was simply fantastic!!! Such energy and rhythm. The Christopher Dean choreography shook up the Ice Dance world - I remember, I watched the original performance at the time. But it's these two supremely gifted and beautiful people who made this unique and remembered so many many years later ...
There are not many memorable dances in the history of Ice Dancing. However this is one of them, because it was new, it was fresh, it was ground breaking. Who remembers the winners' free dance?
I think many people don‘t realize how difficult it is to perform to a music like this, with its fast and strong rhythm that changes all the time. That should get extra bonus points (but I admit I have no idea about the figure skating scoring system) They absolutely nailed it!!
This program...this couple, was what made me fall in love with ice dance. Just incredible innovation, difficulty, strength, speed, endurance and artistry. I wish they had been rewarded better throughout their career but they can definitely say they were an instrument of change in the world of figure skating.
My wife & I had the pleasure of taking figure skating & ice dancing lessons from both Paul & Isabelle in Florida in the late 1990's. (I wasn't very good at it, but let me tell you, it made me a much stronger skater for hockey!) They work very hard indeed. Paul would sometimes be at the rink until 11:00pm when I was leaving after my hockey game, and we would talk about all sorts of things, he is a very nice, down-to-earth gentleman. I wish I knew where he was now, would love to catch up on things.
It was different and very original, and that is why I loved it. They will always be my favorite dance team, behind Torvill and Dean. I think it is always great to be different.
Too bad that they did not win more title. But many years later, who remember the programs of other medalists? while many people still remember this jungle program
I remember Kimova and Ponamerenko's from the 1992 Games as well as Usova and Zhulin's. But I don't remember Wilson and McCall's programs at all. They competed I think in 1988.
This routine is unforgettable, even after 25 yrs. people still remember it. They were the perfect skaters for this, expressive and strong. Your remark about Isabelle's skating is offensive. Who are we to judge a world class skater's abilities? She always looked stunning, they were both a joy to look at.
Once more a program choreographed by Christopher Dean! He was the innovator behing the Ice Dancing competitions those years (see the Bolero 4 years ago by Torvill & Dean)! :D
I was a kid and rarely intersted in sports, but they were unforgettable. I just remember "Olympic Icedance", "Brother and Sister", "Jungle", "Drumming", "Avant-garde". I'm really glad I watch their show again!
I saw THIS very magnificent performance on tv and I was amazed by these 2 great Canadian skaters ! Isabelle married the British ice dancer Christopher Dean in 1991, but divorced in 1993. You guys should know that the North-Americans are...very fluffy in marriage.
Fluffy in marriage? Whatever that means. And the Duchesnays were French. They competed for Canada but that federation never respected them so they competed for the mother country - France.
So this is the dance that Dick Button made reference to when he called Krylova and Ovsyannikov's 1999 Free Dance in Helsinki. I can definitely see the similarities.
I've just realized how much this programme owes to the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini's programme by Bestemianova and Bukin. But OMG, did Isabelle ever lift her free leg? Paul, on the other hand, was one of the finest male dancers of that era. Right up there with Ponomarenko
I think Ice Dancing has slowly gone backwards since the early '90s. Much of today's Ice Dance programs are boring imo. 5.3 by the Canadian judge reads like sour grapes. They treated the Duchesnays like crap when they competed for Canada, so they went to France. The bitter Canadian judge just tried to take a swipe at them.
the Dancing has gone backwards in early '90s then come back on track in the late '90s- early '2000s and gone backwards again later on (imho) p.s. and I totally agree about canadian judge (but than canadian judges (and most likely their federation) was very adamant about ice dancing to be actual dancing (as they always did judge very rigorously more interpretive programs done by some russian or french teams
The very biased and bought, rotten to the core, Russian controlled skating organization stole the medals from this phenomenally stupendous pair and no one has matched them since. I remember watching this live and it thrilled the world. Equal praise to the coach and choreographer.
And what about medals awarded to medal judges only from the USSR? Or maybe, in addition to the Eastern bloc, there were judges from France, Britain, Germany, the USA and Canada? Maybe you did not notice that the highest ratings for the technical part were put by France and Hungary, and the lower 5.3 Canada and 5.5 US? What kind of bias and influence of Russian judges do you speak?
they were so innovative and the judges hated that,,,and SkateCanada could not handle them too so they went to France and skated for them...Canada's loss.
I don't argue that Paul was stronger than Isabelle. It's the wording of the post I was previously replying to that I find upsetting. No skater we can watch at worlds is "fabulously bad". And well - I saw Isabelle stumbling once in their Olympic program in '92, which she skated with a flu and an injury. All their other performances she skated cleanly. It's quite a normal thing that one partner of a coule is stronger than the other.
as much as i love D&W there synchronization needed work. especially coming out of those little spins. his arm would be over his head and hers somewhere else. drove me nuts. they could have learned something from this pair.
they have taken on themselves at least two pairs in the Olympic champions and prize-winners: Anisina-Peizerat borrowed a lot from them in the style of skating, Domnina and Shabalin, they owe their Olympic dance-not Linichuk as it has come up with!
You were there with them to know that Isabelle tried to control him? Only thing I ever heard was that he cheated on her with Jill Trenary - which he did.
Thirty years later, I still remember how exciting and innovative they were. Shame on the judges who didn't have the courage to give them the recognition they deserved.
Anthea de Forest They made history
@Anthea de forest - what about the backstage details (Canada) which made them to participate for...France ?? Isn't that shame too ?
Why shame?
@ROMANABSOLUT If my memory serves, they were born in France 🇫🇷 and the French were willing to afford more financial support.
Typical of Canada 🇨🇦. Cheers from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
🎯👍👍👍
Still stands out after all these years as extraordinary.
I had never seen anyone dancing like that before : for me, it was a complete revelation !
Always my favorite team.. Duchesnay & Duchesnay..
A brilliant programme choreographed by Christopher Dean, one half of Torvill anf Dean, the greatest ice dance couple of all time and he continued devising all of their startling routines.
the best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I remember this so well. They were brilliant. And choreography by Christoper Dean, well, nothing else needs to be said.
They were brilliant but underrated by judges :-(
That's the way it is when someone is in the vanguard.
I have been looking for this dance since i saw it 30 yrs ago. What a performance shame on the Canadian judge
Tolik let a stále to mám v paměti... nejkrásnější
Schade.
Isabel und Paul sind
grossartig.🧡 ⛸. ((👏))
Pioneer of modernity
They were cheated by the judges, not fair at all. This team deserved gold
They always choose such an interesting music
Avant-garde ❤ art
Questa e' ARTE! 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️👌

Proof that in those days, reputation counted for more than ability...
21st Century skaters competing in a 20th century sport.
WONDERFUL
They were the best in the world
Amazing beautiful fans, wow

I saw this free dance live, still remember it thirty years later. Can't remember a single one of the other competitors free dances.
Me too
Same here, glued in my mind forever!
I still remember this 30 years later!
This was simply fantastic!!! Such energy and rhythm. The Christopher Dean choreography shook up the Ice Dance world - I remember, I watched the original performance at the time. But it's these two supremely gifted and beautiful people who made this unique and remembered so many many years later ...

🥰
My absolute favorite skate couple of all time. Choreography so innovative by Dean.
This is one of the routines that sticks in the memory. Totally original, brilliantly skated.
I think many people don‘t realize how difficult it is to perform to a music like this, with its fast and strong rhythm that changes all the time. That should get extra bonus points (but I admit I have no idea about the figure skating scoring system) They absolutely nailed it!!
I was lucky enough to be in Budapest that night. It was electrifying.
This program...this couple, was what made me fall in love with ice dance. Just incredible innovation, difficulty, strength, speed, endurance and artistry. I wish they had been rewarded better throughout their career but they can definitely say they were an instrument of change in the world of figure skating.
This is still the best ever Ice Dance. I'm glad that it was recorded and saved.
This is the pure essence of ice dance put on the ice. I do agree, the best couple of all time with major credits to Christopher Dean.
This program simply changed the history of dance. Still wonderful, brillant, electrifying....
Still more modern than today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i do agree!
Braniff Blue Totally agree.
It's a travesty that they didn't win more titles. Absolutely sensational and Chris Dean said Paul one of the best technical skaters ever.
My wife & I had the pleasure of taking figure skating & ice dancing lessons from both Paul & Isabelle in Florida in the late 1990's. (I wasn't very good at it, but let me tell you, it made me a much stronger skater for hockey!) They work very hard indeed. Still in memory after all these years.... Simply wonderful...A really terrific programme. That's why I love ice dance. Simply unforgettable
Thank you Christopher Dean !!
Christopher Dean choreography, says it all.
Ooooooh. Dean of the perfect 6?
They were always thrilling to watch.
It was different and very original, and that is why I loved it. They will always be my favorite dance team, behind Torvill and Dean. I think it is always great to be different.
Is 2018 and Im looking this beautiful program seems actual.
Still one of the best ice dancing routines I've ever seen. They had an intensity that no one else seems to have.
Ils sont unique. Tout comme leur esthétique. Même en 2018...c’est totalement addictif.
Extremely well skated to brilliant choreography!
Still as brilliant as the first time.
Too bad that they did not win more title. But many years later, who remember the programs of other medalists? while many people still remember this jungle program
+agpban I and many skating fans certainly remember Klimova/Ponomarenko's and Wilson/McCall's programs.
I was about to say - and B/B too, liking the Duchesnays doesn't have to prevent us from also enjoying other dancers' programs
I remember Kimova and Ponamerenko's from the 1992 Games as well as Usova and Zhulin's. But I don't remember Wilson and McCall's programs at all. They competed I think in 1988.
Wasn´t it called the "Mandingo"?
Probably one of the most dramatic pieces of music ever heard during an ice dancing competition. I've always felt that he always outskated her.
That was very creative. Shame on those judges. *smh
Many many thanks for this. It's what France makes great in ice dancing every time !!!
Das beste was ich je gesehen habe. Musik toll mit Tanz vereint. So was geniales wünsche ich mir ! Für mich die besten Läufer aller Zeiten .
Just watching this program again !!! And so many feelings !!!! Incredible !!!
Literally unforgettable.
After all these years, they still stand out and above all the others.
Breaking the mold has never looked so sublime.
This routine is unforgettable, even after 25 yrs. people still remember it. They were the perfect skaters for this, expressive and strong. Your remark about Isabelle's skating is offensive. yes, exactly the most original dance of all the time , noone did it better as them til now
*cough* Torvill and Dean *cough*
Now this is DANCE!
They were robbed by the old fart judges that wish to keep ice dancing as boring as themselves.
that was great!
I still loooove it!
wonderful! I have seen it in time.
Fantastic routine...
Beautiful!
Everything changed in ice dance after this routine. LEGENDARY
Christopher Dean is a genious !
@Martine … and a really nice guy; a true gentleman!
I saw THIS very magnificent performance on tv and I was amazed by these 2 great Canadian skaters ! Isabelle married the British ice dancer Christopher Dean in 1991, but divorced in 1993. You guys should know that the North-Americans are...very fluffy in marriage.

thanks for uploading. I always taped them on VHS, and was sad all my tapes were ruint

The Canadian judges we're always hard on them because they left for France.
beste jsdanspaar ever
Guillaume Cizeron should take note of Paul Duchesnay and bear his armpits furry: he'd be a major hit. ;)
Hey y'all, me again. You gotta try this: watch this on mute and play M83s Midnight City.
as much as i love D&W there synchronization needed work. especially coming out of those little spins. his arm would be over his head and hers somewhere else. drove me nuts. they could have learned something from this pair.

musique ? ?
What is the name of the music? I'd love to buy it on iTunes.
I think it was called "Savage Rites".
Savage rites is the name of the routine. However the music is Mandingo III / War Dance
Kudos to Christopher Dean, still hate the way Isabelle tried to control him though.
You were there with them to know that Isabelle tried to control him? Only thing I ever heard was that he cheated on her with Jill Trenary - which he did.
@@mysticalmargaret6105 And then he cheated on Jill Trenary with Karen Barber...
Was für eine "Gänsehaut-Kür"! Leider zutief bewertet.
