hey friends and welcome back to another movie reaction!! Today we're taking on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, as I've had some recent interest in finally checking out this franchise now that FURIOSA is in theaters and receiving rave reviews! Can't believe it's taken me this long to dive into this film - I honestly wish I hadn't been so brain-blasted at the end there, as I don't think my commentary fully captured how much I really enjoyed this movie and how moved I was by it. I stated in my after-thoughts that I wanted to rewatch it (and luckily I got to do that while editing!) and oh my GOODNESS, this is an incredible film! These characters, this story, the LANDSCAPE - I see why it's so popular. Glad I finally remedied being late to this game! Perhaps I'll film a reaction to FURIOSA when it becomes available on streaming - loved that character and am SO interested in seeing her origin story.

That end gets us all. Nux’s story arc is masterfully done, and him pointing to Capable, the only person he needed to witness him, the only person to truly treat him with kindness and compassion. 🥺🥺🥺🥺

You should look up the behind the scenes footage, that shot of him flipping the war rig and the guitar truck crashing into it was 100% real vehicles and not CGI, it's incredible what this movie pulled off. Truly a masterpiece

this movie isnt about the answers, it's about the experience. it's a perfect example of how action movies should be done.
The great thing about it is that it actually have a lot of answers hidden under the surface, behind the curtain. Miller and his crew developed so many details, backstory for every every character, every weird car, their wacky language and bizarre rituals. So even without explaining much to the audience, it all fits together internally, so it still makes sense despite all the insanity

Well the franchise is about the answers. I wouldn't look for answers in this film particularly because the majority of questions were answered decades earlier.

The wives are genetically "perfect" and therefore good breeding material. You're one of the first reactors that didn't mention they're essentially supermodels. They stand out compared to most of the others (Furiosa being another obvious beauty with no apparent genetic flaws).
Flaws, or just dying/scarred from radiation poisoning.
Nux's final "witness me" is heartbreaking. But Capable's reaction sells it even more. I love that she does the Vuvalini hand gesture they do when someone they care about dies, where they kinda pull the person in close, then hold them over their heart. Nux's sacrifice meant something.
I really wanted him to survive even though he was dying from cancer. His sacrifice always gets me😭
When 2 religions make the world whole
The amount of influence the mad max films have had in tv shows, video games, and movies is almost immeasurable. Like I remember as a little kid watching a rugrats episode where they were all dressed up in mad max apparel, including a 1 to 1 of the gyro captain's outfit and vehicle from the road warrior.

for example, George Millers invented the car chase genre (inspired from his time as an IR doctor seeing all the road accidents)
This is never brought up in the film, but the young girl Max keeps seeing during the beginning is Glory from the Fury Road prelude comics and Video Game (2015). In the comics, her mother, Hope, asks Max to help rescue her kidnapped daughter. Max rescues Glory but later finds out that Glory, along with her mother Hope, died regardless of Max's help. Both Glory and Hope heavily parallel Max's wife and child; within Max's head, he kind of combines these two events, leading to a lot of confusion by many thinking this is a reboot where Max had a daughter instead of a young son.
Max had an infant son and a wife; as I mentioned, Glory and Hope are closely related to the son/wife in their fates but do not replace that history, and the first film's events are canonical across all films. This is just another example of Max's failure to save people from the monsters of civilisation and later The Wasteland.
If 'Mad Max: The Wasteland' ever becomes a movie - I think we will see the tragedy of Hope & Glory
The warboys have accepted that their lives were disposable and that the best they can hope for is to die gloriously and be reborn in Valhalla. But Nux went from being profoundly unworthy ("mediocre!") to finding something worth living and fighting for. Having found something worth living for, his death then becomes far more meaningful than a warboy's plaintive cries for Valhalla.
Damn right i teared up.
Steven Soderbergh called George Miller a genius for Fury Road.
In an interview about it, he said:
"I just watched Mad Max: Fury Road again last week, and I tell you I couldn’t direct 30 seconds of that... I don’t understand two things: I don’t understand how they’re not still shooting that film and I don’t understand how hundreds of people aren’t dead."
That whole rant is kind of amazing.
This movie is an absolute timeless masterpiece for the ages.......

The car used in Fury Road was converted to Max`s car in early 2001 as that was when filming first started then 911 happened and the movie was moth balled...
There is a good few documentary's about the car and Max on TH-cam spanning from mid 1970s to present.. the car used in Mad Max 2 after it`s destruction is in someone's privet collection....
Also a reunion of the original actors at the original town in Australia ` Mad Max Actors, Vehicles & Fans - 40th Anniversary at CLUNES, 2019 `... :):)
Fun fact: the actor playing Immortan Joe is the same guy who played Toecutter in the 1979 Mad Max 😊
Besides Furiosa, the Mad Max movies are not connected. They all assume youre going in blind. Each is a soft reboot. Thats why they do the prologue. Yeah, its worth seeing them all.. but each one is its own story. Only connection is Max, the wasteland, and some sort of gang as the villian.
Ohhhhhhh woah I had no idea!! Phew - I was beginning to worry if I’d made a mistake by not educating myself first on the older films, but I’ve heard really great things about them and want to check those out, too!
It's best to think of the films as stories told of a lone road warrior named Max roaming the wasteland and these stories are told by different people
Fury Road is told from either Furiosa or one of the surviving wives... Which is why when Max goes off we don't follow him we just see some explosions... We see the other Max scenes with Nux because Nux quite possibly told this part to one of them
Well if you want to be technical the villian in the original plays Immortan Joe in this one....
Thanks for getting this right! My pet hate is people's daft theories about continuity of this series when the movies obviously need to be seen as variations on a theme. They clearly contradict each other: Max's interceptor is destroyed multiple times, Bruce Spence plays two different characters, they take place wildly different times after the apocalypse (or right before it in the case of the first), etc.

Fury Road is one of the prettiest movies ever. I pretty much always cry over the beauty when the engine is on fire and Furiosa lowers the cow catcher to bring up dust and you see the engine aspirate as the music swells,,,
I'm a dude, I don't need much. It will always get me.
Also: Charlize with one arm and dirty AF and no hair is the most beautiful woman I'll ever lay eyes on.
I can only hope my relentless guitar practice makes me the Doof Warrior in the Mad Max future.

I LOVE this scene
This film is a story getting retold as legend by people of the Mad Max universe. Max was once a policeman now a road warrior. Trying to do right in a world of evil and barrenness. He refuses to help at the begining of the film because he's broken from all the innocent that died under his protection over the many years he's survived.
Fury Road is a goddamned masterpiece of visual storytelling. Miller should be given anything he needs to continue practicing this craft. If nothing else, watch Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior and catch Furiosa in a theater with good sound. (also, I've seen this movie over a dozen times in and out of theaters and I cry every time so don't sweat it)
Doof warrior (the guitarist) isn’t just there for aesthetic, he actually uses the guitar to relay to everyone Immortan Joes orders during battle. The only time he stops playing is when they’ve stopped moving.
13:20 “still not entirely sure what’s going on…” no one does the first hour of this movie, and then it turns out to be one of the best experiences you’ve ever had 😂😂😂
And it gets better with every rewatch because there are so many things discover in this world.
I watched this for the first time after furiosa and I think watching furiosa first is required viewing. It makes this movie hit 10x harder because it leads directly into this one

Thanks for the input. I was hesitant to see Furiosa because Charlize Theron was not in it. (I still say she should have been). Many Critics were skeptical of Anya Taylor-Joy's casting despite being a great actress in her own right. Apparently it was Alyla Browne and Chris Hemsworth who really carried the film (like Theron and NIcholas Hoult did in Fury Road). But now I am more interested in checking it out.

It's amazing to watch several times to absorb the complex action sequences & the way they're masterfully edited together.
For real!! It was a lot to take in upon first watch - it was wild to see how much more I picked up the second time through while editing this!
The movies take place in Australia, where Max was a cop before society collapsed. The "Salt" they refer to is the Pacific Ocean, dried up.

This easily could've won Best Picture and Director that year. I thought they'd give it to The Revenant. And that was well deserved for sure. I loved that movie...Your summation at the end was brilliant. As Tom cruise said, You should work for NASA or something. 😂It'd be great to watch your reaction to Furiosa. When something like this gets an Oscar nomination for best picture...you know its special. It didn't win that one but won several others. So the villain in this is the same actor that played the villain in the original movie.
In that case I definitely need to check out the first ones!
The first three films you see Max's character go through an arc, but the movies themselves are unrelated to each other. Fury Road they "re-break" Max, and the movie is unrelated to the previous 3, which is why it's acceptable to watch it without seeing the original trilogy. The director George Miller was an ER Doctor who's work involved a lot of car crash victims, and it inspired him to make these movies. Also he wrote and produced Babe, and Happy Feet.
No wonder this movie was so good - same creator as BABE?!? 😭
Fury Road is a callback to filmmaking of yesteryear. In a day where movies are bloated with exposition and over explained, all the answers are in the details and the performances. Max's seemingly "feral" nature for example is an implication that he hasn't socialized or had any real human connection in quite some time. Hence, few words and short answers for most of the film. Miller deliberately wrote and directed the film so that it could also be viewed not only in black and white but also silent format. There's a reason all those old silent films are considered classics and it's not just because they're old. It's because it's much more difficult to tell a story with visuals alone. It takes a master to be able to convey meaning without the benefit of exposition.

Mad Max is one of the best mythological heroic archetypes in film history. The original changed the way we see vendetta and action films heading into the 1980s , like the original Star Wars changed the way we saw Sci fi..
George Lucas shared to Miller that his success of Star Wars and storytelling came from the influence of Joseph Campbell's books..
Everyone and everything in Fury Road had a background story. Fantastic end in Fury Road as Max walks off as the mythological hero who helped save Citadel . Great center framing shots in each scene, so you wouldn't lose track of the action . Old-school day blue filtered night shots scenes, to reveal clear background..
Miller had his wife do the master editing to prevent just predictable dated action film repeated by male editors in the past.

I definitely recommend the originals as they are some of the best in the series , especially MAD MAX 2 The Road Warrior, and in my opinion, MM2 is the best action sequel ever made. Awesome #2 👌 And you don't have to watch them in order

The War Rig is a legendary vehicle. In this universe, people dream of driving it. Watch 'Furiosa' and you'll understand just how iconic this truck truly is.
All of the people, who worked on this movie did tremendous job. I mean making this desert setting so fascinating and unique, making constant action engaiging, having sense and not noisy, making this movie have legit emotional scenes, despite having pretty simple (in a good way) plot it's really hard. And all of that also looks and sounds beautiful.
36:41 from what i understand about the mad max universe, the reason they refer to him as mad max is because in a world like that where everyone is insane and ritualistic with war and chaos, him being as empathetic as he is is very rare and thus deeming him "mad" for having those feelings. at least i think
Haven''t seen this since it was first released, very fun way to see it again. Forgot how big certain moments hit in this film!
I'm wondering how the Breeder wives recognized the "People Eater", the ruler of Gas Town? Perhaps from a previous time he had visited the Citadel?
Possibly gifts of perfect women as tribute to Joe, from the other town bosses. There's nothing to say that all the women were born at the Citadel.
Crying at Nux's sacrifice is normal, because it was from a place of love and not blind faith.
Women are not rare, but healthy non mutated women are indeed more difficult to find. Immortan Joe is trying to have healthy kids, since as we can see all his children (as most of the warboys) have some sort of issues (physical or mental).
Excited to watch this reaction Cat. It’s a great film. I watched it last year for the first time, I loved it. After I saw Furiosa, I rewatched Fury Road & loved it even more. Furiosa is Rogue one to Fury Road’s A new hope. Excited to check this out later

@@CatherineLaSalle Yeah it was really great. To me, this is Chris Hemsworth's greatest performance. He was fantastic as the villain. Probably up there with Immortan Joe from Fury Road, Koba from Planet of the Apes, Thanos from the MCU & Joker from the Dark Knight in terms of favorite film villain performances in past 20 years. He was fantastic
my best cinema experience of 2015! I miss that kind of movies these days!last 2 times I went to the cinema was to see Dune part 1-2, almost went to see Avatar 2 but the ticket alone would cost me 42 dollars here in denmark!
"Turbo Kid" is a low budget, 80s throwback (of the best kind), that was heavily inspired by the Mad Max series. The film is far better than it's budget would have you believe, and possesses so much heart and human truth. The soundtrack by "Les Matos" is incredible as well.
I just noticed that Catherine looks a lot like the actress, Mariska Hargitay before she joined "Law & Order: SVU". Before that show, she was on the TV medical drama "E.R." (S04) and had long dark hair just like Catherine. The resemblance is uncanny.

Dear Catherine, so glad you liked it. I was a bit like you at first, pensive, as a fan of he original Mel Gibson movies, but I was swept in the sheer battle frenzy of it all, and the beautiful scenery/cinematography, and the sympathetic or larger than life characters!!
The first Mad Max (1979) is really scary. When it was released in France, it was prohibited for under 18s. We all wanted to see it but we weren't old enough.

Fury Road was supposed to be filmed in Australia like the first 3 movies, but unfortunately prior to the start of production the Australian outback received record rain fall which then turned their planned post apocalyptic waste land location into a lush garden full of green grasses and wild flowers, so they ended up moving production to the Namibian desert
you did a great job! You don't need to have seen the other Mad Max movies because the story is like parallel to each other, they don't actually intersect. There is also a gap of many years so you made the right choice.
I get why people think one might want to watch Furiosa first but I like that you're watching them in order. Furiosa hits super hard as you see her transform into the woman she is in Fury Road. Plus, you can always go back and watch Fury Road again (woo!) They are perfect companion movies.
In the beginning he is a thing, a resource to extract, a farm animal, a source of blood...
In the end he gives his blood freely, and is a human named Max.
Action packed movie from start to finish but also amazing story telling. You don't have to be told everything that's happening
I have also not seen the original Mel Gibson movies, and ever since I saw this in the theatre it has become one of my favourite movies. It absolutely stands on its own, and I have never felt the need to see the old trilogy.
Most of the people I talk to who didn't like it cite similar reasons that you did at the beginning. They just didn't give it the grace you did. And yes, it's perfectly normal to cry at the end; Nux's redemption is beautiful.
You should watch the original trilogy-it deserves your attention
Mad Max Fury Road is my favorite movie of all time! i saw it 3 times at the theatre! I've never watched a movie to give me such a emotional roller-coaster! When Furiosa falls to her knees and screams probably one of my favorite moments in movie history! The child Max sees is a mother and child he was couldn't save and gives him continuous nightmares, There is a prequel comic that shows her and was made into a fan movie called hope and glory which is incredible you can find on youtube , This was also supposed to be the next Mad Max movie prequel but due to the Furiosa not doing well at the box office its doubtful we will get it.
Highly recommend Furiosa its incredible and goes so well with this movie.
This was a great reaction. Don't worry, you don't need to have seen the previous ones, none of them lay out the lore that much. You gotta peace it together yourself. Also, every Mad Max movie is pretty different from each other. Even Furiosa is pretty different from Fury Road, even though it is the one movie connected to another Mad Max movie the most.
I'm just sad Furiosa bombed, since it's a great movie, and I really wanted to see Hardy in the role of Max again in the future, but that's very unlikely now. :(
Many know of the 'lack of chemistry' between Theron and Hardy. How it appears to us is shown in small ways. I'd like to make evident the opening credits as they have been a staple of Hollywood's pecking order from the beginning. We see Hardy's credit first - but it is center screen in relation to Theron's credit which appears second before the first fades, showing her credit position higher on the screen. So one was first and the other higher - both usually given to the 'star' of a film and included in contract negotiations.
Yes unfortunately I’ve been hearing that FURIOSA is incredible but nobody is showing up to theaters to watch it!! Hopefully the word of mouth will continue to spread
I still tear up during the "Witness" scene and when Max finally opens up to Furiosa and the rest of the crew and tells them his name. I haven't watched the original movies, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. From what I could gather, this movie is about redemption, and becoming a better person than you ever imagined. It seems like Max, was a police officer who couldn't save the people that are always haunting him. Furiosa must have done some pretty messed up stuff to survive and become so trusted by Imortan Joe. Nux thought that he had failed to be the hero that he always wanted to be, but in the end, he gets another chance to save the lives of people who cared more about him, than the people he wanted to impress in the beginning.
I'm still surpirsed the director made Babe

Yeah the movie just launches you into this world, and it takes a little time to understand, but the character development and the relationships that develop all while the entire movie is a non stop chase sequence is brilliant and one of a kind.
Truly that’s one of the biggest takeaways: how successfully they were able to build these relationships through such little but effective shared moments with the characters, all fighting for the same thing
When you have sated your obsession with the Mad Max world you must have a look at George Miller's other great masterpiece 'Babe'. Another amazing world to get drawn into.

I had the opposite experience my first time with this movie; everything seemed so clear, and direct to the point with VISUAL STORYTELLING. It felt like such a fresh air within so many movies out there having to waste so much time telling the viewer what the movie is about like a short attention span toddler that only pays attentions to shaky camera, and and shiny lights to compensate for bad scripts.
If you thought Fury Road was emotionally powerful then you’ll love Furiosa. That character is up there with iconic badass women like Ripley from Alien and Sarah Connor from Terminator.
A couple of details that elude most people; the cars that feature in the mad max movies are all older models. Thats because the original Mad Max was released in 1979. Back then we still had a lot of cars that had chrome grilles on the front and chrome bumper bars. The war boys have been taught a weird mix of automobiles and sacrificing themselves in war. A function of the fact that they have "half-lives" - ie theyre riddled with thyroid cancers and other cancers. So they make their lives meaningful with "war" and yearn for valhalla, where they wont have cancers. The spray is silver spray "paint" to imitate a chrome grille of a car. And when they "pray", they hold their fingers intertwined pointing up - in the shape of a V8 engine.
Also, Mad Max takes place in Australia
Talk about an arc of a reaction. From general disinterest to crying during one of the pivotal moments of the film. And what an arc Hoult's character went through as well. Love this film Modern classic and my favorite Mad Max film.
Original Mad Max movie was a low budget film $300K but epic, biggest film profit ever.
You don't need to see the earlier films, this was basically a reboot. They are good, though, and worth seeing. Start with Road Warrior, the second movie but where the franchise really takes off.
The land can be poisoned so easily.
I work at a site which used to be part of the 'Diamond Shamrock Chemical Corp'... There are heavy metals and toxic scrap buried everywhere, miles around have been fenced off for decades... Only recently, afrer more than 50 years of letting nature leach the poisons, have nearby areas of it been opened up to residential zoning.
My word young lady, you’re just getting to watching Fury Road now? It’s an experience. It’s one of the best action movies ever made. It was supposed to have been made in the early 2000’s but it was stuck in production hell due to countless issues & difficulties. You should watch the behind the scenes stuff about making it as it’ll blow your mind away. I haven’t watched your reaction yet, but I’m going to take a gamble & surmise that you loved it.
Edit: They worship cars & trucks so their god the “God of Engines V8.” Being shiny & chrome is like a shiny new car with a chrome grill. So when you die or are martyred your actual grill is chromed out like a shiny new car for your journey to the afterlife. It not only mimics cultish behavior but also a lot of civilizations. In particular the chrome paint in the grill of your face ritual mimicked ancient ones who prepared the dead especially royalty with decorations, personal effects & expensive items like jewelry for the afterlife such as the Egyptians did with their Pharaohs such as Tutankhamen for example. Brilliant.
Not sure if it was mentioned but the guy with the guitar and the wall of speakers is basically coordinating movements like a drummer on a battlefield. Need a lot of volume to be heard over all those cars
I watched it at the cinema back in 2015. It is my favorite film of all time, La Salle, believe it or not! :)
Fury Road and Furiosa are reboots as evidenced by stuff like the timeline not adding up or Max having a daughter (the girl he keeps seeing) which he didn’t in the old ones.
In the wasteland vehicles have become kind of a religion which explains some aspects of the cult such as the chrome spray.
The wives were particularly important because they were clean and without disease which is rare and Joe wanted a perfect son.
Furiosa enhances this movie a lot and is one of the best prequels ever. It’s more story focused and handles the world building better. If you want you should definitely watch it in theaters as it’s not doing well in the box office. It’s a great experience on the big screen.
That isn't Max's daughter. That is Glory, a girl who Max rescued in the Fury Road tie-in comics and the video game. Despite saving her, Max found out later that Glory and her mother, Hope, died anyway. However much of that is canon or not these days, it still isn't Max's daughter.
@@chrispipes5451 at one point in the movie she calls max “pa” so that’s where I assumed that from. Either way the mad max game confirms he has a daughter through a picture he has of her and his wife.
@@bombird8813 that's why the game is largely non-canon, there's a lot of things that are "off". The comics are legit though, and I don't wanna leave a huge wall of text, but if you look up "Glory the Child", her biography is a good summation of what goes on in the comic. It explains a lot of Max's visions.
Glad you are finally watching one of my favorite franchises ever. I saw Mad Max back in 1979 when I was 7 years old and it changed everything. 2 years after 1977 Han shoots first Star Wars. Welcome to one of the dopest franchises on planet Earth. I'm sure you are going to watch Furiosa next but the Mel Gibson movies are something to behold. Though they might be a bit too rough their not as friendly as these two more recent films, the original is fairly hardcore. Beyond Thunderdome being the exception. Anyways, enjoying your channel. At least you guys today have a better selection of 'old' stuff to choose from and a much better way to approach that endeavor. If I wanted to explore past films it was: Technicolor Epics, B&W Classics, and well, that was it.
Yes it's an emotional story. Describing scenes in it is like reciting poetry. Nux gets up on his feet at the sound of war drums. If I'm going to end, I'm going to end historic on the fury road! It is the story of the leftovers of humankind, those still clinging tenaciously to the underside of the world.

This film is like an onion. Every time you watch it, you will see new details and appreciate it anew.
I highly recommend checking out the graphic novel of mad max it explains the history of the immortan Joe and why they worship him as a god. It briefly goes into detail about the wives and very little on furiosa. Max’s chapter is no longer canon but is pretty much a shortened version of the game. Which is super underrated btw.

That being said, don't expect TOO MUCH from Furiosa... it's nowhere near as good as FR, which remains one of the greatest action films of the 2000's imo, because George Miller took the understandable but regrettable decision to shoot it differently. It's still worth the watch, though.
The originals don't really have any backstory for Fury Road's plot. Watching them just helps you understand Max's character and the story being told through action rather than exposition.
This film has one of the coolest teaser trailers from Comic-Con. It included a cover song of Cat Stevens "Wild World" done by Junkie XL.
Another post-apocalyptic film that takes place in Australia is "These Final Hours" (2013). It takes place 10 minutes after an Asteroid hits the earth. The last remaining survivors are in Perth, Australia while a huge unstoppable wall of fire is slowing encircling the earth.
The movie making differences in Fury Road and in Furiosa pale in comparison to the differences you see across the whole franchise if that is what you would choose to call it. They all seem to have Their own reach. Their own moments
Mad max inspired Fallout way back in the early 90s, its also compulsory viewing here in Aus, non negotiable
Definitely should react to the old Mad Max films with Mel Gibson.

Please see Furiosa while it is still in the theaters, it was every bit as good as Fury Road, and my daughter argues it's better. It will give you and even greater appreciation for the story of Fury Road.

And for sure, you don't need to see the others at all. These films are basically of a heightened reality, the stuff of legends, including in their "unreality." This movie tells you everything you need to know, and you felt it in the end. That's all that matters!
The was a time in the deep past before the interwebs gave us 30 videos to explain what the red flower that was too small to see without a microscope in the corner of the room in act two of some film meant. Most of us had to figure things out for ourselves and come to our own conclusions with nothing more than input from a few friends. There were no right or wrong answers and sometimes we came up with some odd but fun theories. Now, we have wikis, and explainer sites that act like there is only one perspective, as if films are not like other art and are not interpretive. Not to say things like wikis can't be helpful, but sometimes I miss the days of people just figuring stuff out for themselves. The original films were part of that era, there were lots of details that are never explained and back then we just had to deal. This film taps into those ideas in a good way and proves you don't need to know every detail to enjoy a well-made film.

Catherine, great reaction! Definitely see "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga"! I saw it twice, with my daughter. It's awesome! The original Trilogy is good too. The Second one, "Mad Max", is an improvement on the 1st. I really liked the 3rd "Thunderdome" movie, but it's a bit more "Hollywood" than the first two. Get into this franchise, it's great (albeit, violent and somewhat doom-y).
