And also much beater with moisture. They are pretty much breathable due to underlying mesh structure and dry almost instantly. No problems with losing all warmth when wet compared to down. Alpha 60 hoodie and leggings have become my go to for active hiking warmth.

Down jackets are really only useful when you are static. Most are too warm to use as an active layer and become useless when wet either from weather or sweat. Enlightened Equipment’s synthetic Torrid pullover is the answer. A medium weighs around 8.5oz but you can use it as an active layer and for static use. I no longer bring along a fleece or Alpha Direct garment. Just the Torrid and a rain jacket so I’ve saved weight by bringing less clothes. The Torrid has been great for 3 season use and it still works when wet.

I bought the Decathlon jacket over the summer on your recommendation and I think for the money I could use that other $300 on some other great hiking gear. I understand the Decathlon is 5-6 oz. heavier, but I'm willing to carry that weight for something I'll only use part of the year vs something like a backpack or tent I can use all year long. Compared to other puffy jackets for the hiking use case, and for the money it's hard to beat the Decathlon... I'll keep it.

Very funny coincidence. I bought the MT100 3 days ago. In Europe, the hooded version goes around 70€ and the non-hooded around 50€. Even though it is only 15D fabric, it feels more durable than you would expect from it at that price point. It even has YKK zippers. Check it out highly recommendable. Weighs around 280 g

Looks like a good option for a pullover style hoodie. Personally, I don't like pullover style hoodies for a puffy. I like pullover alpha midlayer hoodie. Puffy I really like just a full zip no-hood jacket just for sitting around camp in mostly. I VERY VERY rarely bust out the puffy layer while actually hiking, because it is overkill when you are moving with your body heat in my experience. Also, don't want to get it wet, so it mainly stays in my pack until camp on mostly all of my trips. In the rare case you would want to wear the puffy actively, the pullover is a PITA, and the hood is annoying to me. This is usually in really cold weather when I stop for a break or for lunch or dinner and I just want to quickly throw on another layer to keep core temp up. A full zip regular jacket seems to work much better for that to quickly throw on and take off.

Did you try the zipper again after putting the jacket on? From the video clip of it catching while you’re wearing it, I wonder if it’s getting caught because there’s tension on the jacket along the upper part of the zipper. It looks a tad snug there. I think the zipper is having trouble overcoming the tension.

@@DanBecker Thanks. Yes, Montbell is expensive. I cursed you as I pushed the buy button after watching your review back then! ;-) But I have long since forgiven you, and have no regrets. For 3-season camping in NH I carry a puffy to be my warmest layer, just in case needed, and I think the Montbell's level of warmth suits that role well. I'm not sure what role the Black Diamond Deploy Hoodie would play, as it seems too light to cover possible cold conditions, but too warm for a normal mid layer. Maybe you could do a video on how you'd work this into an overall layering system to cover varying ranges of expected temps. Thanks again!

On fill power.... it doesn't tell you much about how warm the jacket will be. It tells you how much insulation you are getting PER OUNCE of down.
But a 700 jacket can easily be as warm or even warmer than an 800, 900, or even 1000 fill power jacket, depending on how much insulation there is and how the jacket is contructed. If the baffles are sewn all the way through, you'll lose heat at every seam. If the cuffs, or neck, or waist can't seal well to the body and let air out or in, you'll lose heat.
The ONLY thing fill power tells you is how LIGHT the jacket is likely to be compared to another jacket with the same amount of down.... except even that is complicated by contruction. Zippers have a weight penalty, as do pockets, snaps, shock cord (bungee drawcords), etc.
Don't be overly impressed by a fill power number. Try the jacket. Check independent reviews. Do the research. A good puffy jacket is not cheap and it's worth putting in some time to make sure you are getting your money's worth and aren't overpaying for performance that just isn't there.

For all these reasons, I'd still say go with the Ghost Whisperer if you are looking for something like this. only 1.5 oz difference, and the GW has been the hands down best performer best rated down puffy after YEARS of user reviews. It's SUPER well tested and is considered the best warmth to weight ratio jacket, but is also WELL KNOWN to be durable enough to handle reasonable backpacking.

The ghost whisperer 2 is highly overrated for warmth. I relied on internet discussion to take that into 40-45F weather and froze my @ss off. Now I thoroughly test gear myself prior to risking my life on it.

The price is high but find a 200g Jacket (mine is exact 200g cause do not want a hood) for less which you can take lower? I use mine without a midlayer down to 45F. Yes 40F would be also to cold for me. But as i said. All jackets with the same weight same temperature and waxed down are equal priced.

@ $359 retail. For much less money and better warmth the Forclaz MT100.

@@10thAveFreezeOut I know that somebody would claim this but i can not agree. I own both jackets. Yes, the Decathlon is much cheaper. I bought the jacket back then (4 years) for 60 Euros (the Ghostwhisperer for 130 Euros on Sale 6 years ago). But when i compare both jackets than the MT 100 is
      1. Not waxed
      2. 55% heavier (but with hood)
      3. Same temperature
So is the MT100 a good Jacket. For sure. But they do not share the same features.
In my comment i said same weight, same temperature and also waxed... Show me please a cheaper alternative. I do not ask for a heavier jacket 😄

You want to compare it to the Plasma 1000 Down Jacket
If you buy direct from Japan, the conversion rate helps you out and it is around $200
