Timeline of Character Debuts (FINAL Update) | Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

- Phew, I can finally never make another of these. I hope you don't mind this video's change in style, I found it more fun to give every character their own section. It makes it less like a timeline though, and it makes the video way longer, so I hope you can keep up.
Songs:
'Flat Zone 2' - Super Smash Bros. Brawl
'One-Winged Angel' - Final Fantasy VII
'Fragments of Sorrow' - Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix
'Ramen Bowl' - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
'Mob Smash' - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Here’s some explanations on some stuff people are pointing out:
- I only included 4 mii costumes, the ones I consider closest to being full characters (Sans, Cuphead, Vault Boy, Bomberman). This is because they look indistinguishable from their actual characters, with no Mii skin showing and proper proportions. I like to include them with characters for a bit of fun, but I understand that putting them at the end with the decade groups is a little strange and farfetched. I promise the 33 and 20 thing was a complete coincidence, I didn’t include the Miis just to make it happen.
- Definitely should have included the female Pokémon Trainer Leaf, who debuted in 2004. Since every other gender swap is from the default’s game, I didn’t include any of them, but now I realise Leaf debuted later.
- People have told me that the DK from the first game was actually Cranky Kong. I think that’s just more of a fun little easter egg Nintendo made up, and the general public would consider Donkey Kong as coming from Donkey Kong.
- Characters like Link and Zelda have their designs from different Zelda games, but the general idea of the characters themselves come from the first one.
- Zero Suit Samus refers to Samus wearing the ‘Zero Suit’ not just ‘Samus without a suit’. The Zero Suit debuted in Metroid: Zero Mission.
- Similarly, Young Link doesn’t just refer to young Link, but the Link from the first part of Ocarina of Time.
- Lucario’s first game, if you don’t like me including the movie he debuted in, was actually Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red / Blue Rescue Team as a cameo in November 2005. Luckily, this puts him in the same place in the timeline. Also, me saying he’s not a video game character was a bit sarcastic. He was obviously just another Pokémon made for a game, but promoted in a movie beforehand.
- I just found out that Kazooie was mentioned in the manual for Diddy Kong Racing. That doesn’t count as a physical debut though. Same with Erdrick being mentioned in Dragon Quest 1.
- I probably shouldn’t have said Sonic’s debut was the Rad Mobile cameo. He was a literal inanimate object in that game. Sonic the character obviously debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991.)
- Since I’m gonna unpin my last comment to pin this one, I forgot Shulk in the 2010s section at 9:20.
I think that’s everything. If not, I’ll edit this later. Thanks for the support on this video!
Actually, I’m not sure if Mystery Dungeon counts as Lucario’s first game since there it was a statue of him, not the actual Pokémon. So that would mean he first appeared in Diamond and Pearl
Why the game and watch music? The smash theme would've been great
It's fine if you think Sonic's first appearance was in Sonic 1 or Rad Mobile Racing. There was a Sonic guidebook that said he made his first appearance in that game but like you said, he was an intimate object so I don't think it matters.
I am pretty sure that duck hunt counts as higher as there was an old Nintendo toy where you shoot ducks
In my head there has to be The Slayer and Shantae ...
But its ok ; I know that they're gonna be playable one day :)
If only we got all-star mode in the same vein as Smash 4, that massive roster in order like this would’ve been a celebration
They could do two different setups, too. All-Star where you fight everyone in their debut order, like the old games going from G&W to Byleth, or All-Star by their Fighter Number, going from Mario to Sora!
@@SorakuFett this game should’ve been a carbon copy of brawl when it came to options
I'm kinda dissapointed with the new all star mode, they got rid of the rest area, it always had a relaxing remix of the game's main theme(except for melee which remixed a Kirby song).
I can understand why it was changed/removed though, would you honestly be willing to go through fighting 89 characters 89 times? Funnily enough knowing myself I would definitely do that lol but realistically speaking I don't think the majority would be bothered to do that over and over and over again.
Especially since trophies are no longer a thing in Ultimate, what would you win? A PNG of the characters final smash with no text to go along with it?
I know, I hope they add that if they just do an enhanced port of Ultimate next gen
I have terrible news. I forgot to put Shulk in the 2010s section at 9:20. That means 21 characters debuted in the 2010s, not 20, which messes up the cool coincidence of 20 characters from both the 2000s and the 2010s. You can't have nice things in life.
Ok never mind. If you count Female Pokémon Trainer (Leaf), who debuted in 2004, it’s 21 for both decades.

@@CuddlyTheMadElite that means sakurai’s rule is void
Lucario it is a videogame character. In the Pokémon franchise, they have the "tradition" of showing a new pokemon of the next generation in a movie. But bc of that they appear first in a movie it doesn't mean that it not a videogame character

Cloud and Sephiroth were in a weird fighting game that came out a bit before FF7
Ehrgeiz. After ff7
Correction: FF7 came out a year before Ehrgeiz in Japan
That came out after FF7
So sonic didn't first appear in sonic the hedgehog, banjo and kazooie was only kazooies debut,
Fascinating
There's a little mistake on it: the first game for Banjo-Kazooie was Diddy Kong Racing a year before. The existence of Kazooie was mentioned on the manual booklet of the game

Some of them give us creepypasta
At this point Roy is a freaking Super Smash Brothers character, instead of a Fire Emblem character.
He was added to promote his game. Lucas and Solid Snake also were planned to have the same treatment for Melee, but didn't happen
That Roy is technically a Smash Original Character. As in terms of personality (and useability) he is nothing like Roy in The Binding Blade. Also the Roy in 4 and Ultimate is based on the Einherjar of Roy in Fire Emblem Awakening, which basically can be described as Cards of characters gaining physical form.
@@Bladrio I mean tbf he’s pretty bad in his own game and in Melee so there wasn’t much difference in usability back then

hello there
Late to the party but awesome! I love that you put some of the assist trophies in there too. ❤️
Thats pretty good but the only one you forgot is the Female pokemon trainer that she debuted on 2004 on the games Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.
Well technically the Female Pokemon Trainer appeared in Crystal is when you able to play a female Pokemon trainer for the 1st time, but in design wise yes that is correct.
@@courage1363 Well, no. The female design used is known as "Leaf", as the design of the scrapped Gen 1 female trainer Green (in America/PAL regions)/Blue (in Japan and most Korean fan translations). [Blue and Green have their names swapped internationally; just, one became Gary Oak, one is a girl].
Since Leaf is just Green in a new shirt and a sweet hat, you could either say her first release was with the Pokémon Adventures manga in 1997, or when she got the new design for FireRed/LeafGreen.
@@elijahpadilla5083 For the next 'Smash Bros.' game, Leaf should obtained Charmander, Wartortle and Venusaur as Echo fighters, before Blue has Bulbasaur, Charmeleon and Blastoise.

I’m happy this finally got done
Btw Lucario’s Movie was made to promote His game,
U wouldn’t say a commercial or a reveal trailer was someone’s first debut
Yeah just because the movie came out slightly earlier it doesn't make him a movie character.
By that logic, Roy is a Smash character and not a FE character.
@@user-bl8cd2xd4g That would make more sense right?
Roy has been in 4 Smash games and only 2 Fire Emblem games (canonically)
But Lucario and the Mystery of Mew is still a movie with story and characters
By THAT logic Min Min's debut is Smash Ultimate Fighters Pass vol.2 because Arms was made in advance to have a paid DLC character in Smash later

Smash Ultimate is truly a celebration of both Nintendo and gaming in general. Now I only hope the next Smash game adds characters that didn't get their chance, like Crash Bandicoot or Master Chief.
4:40 A lot of games of that era had November release dates so Nintendo of America could push them for Black Friday sales.
I will go to my grave insisting that the Donkey Kong as depicted in Smash did not debut in 1981 alongside Mario, but rather in 1994's Donkey Kong Country as the DK in Donkey Kong is actually DKC DK's grandfather Cranky Kong, canonically speaking. Not sure how that logic applies to other series like Zelda where different incarnations of each character show up around Smash, but I'm sticking by it.
Technically speaking, the characters in Zelda aren't really reincarnations of each other. Every Link is just some random unrelated Hylian that possesses the Spirit of the Hero (the only two with a confirmed relationship are the Hero of Time and the Hero of Twilight, of whom the latter is a descendant of the former). Each Zelda is simply a female member of the royal family named in honor of the first Zelda (chronologically speaking, from Skyward Sword), and her powers are hereditary. And there's only one Ganondorf, who is just particularly long-lived via magic, is constantly resurrected by his followers, and is himself the Hatred of Demise given physical form. There is a single case in which Ganondorf actually reincarnates, in Four Swords Adventures, but that game's canonicity is...dubious. Technically it is canon but there's so many contradictions in it many fans believe that it either falls into the "all a dream" category or is just straight up non-canon.
Therefore:
Link, in Smash Ultimate, is the Hero of the Wild, and therefore debuted in 2017.
Zelda, in Smash Ultimate, is from A Link Between Worlds, and debuted in 2013.
Sheik is an odd case, since it's not really clear if this is actually OoT Zelda, just in BotW clothing, or if she might just be some random Sheikha Master Hand picked up off the streets of Kakariko Village in BotW. So either 1998 or 2017.
Ganondorf debuted in 1998.
Young Link is the Hero of Time. 1998.
Finally, Toon Link is also an odd case, since it's not clear if this is the Hero of Winds or the Hero of Spirits, as both use the same design and the one in Smash uses the Wind Waker in a taunt, but also is the Spirit Train engineer (if he's not fighting). So either 2002 or 2009.
@@anerdwithaswitch9686 Maybe, Zelda need a new look from "Breath of the Wild" for the new Smash game.

@@Lagaa Waluigi could be a newcomer for the new game, along with Krystal, Lyn, Shadow(could be an Echo fighter for Sonic) and Silver, Dark Link(could be an Echo fighter for Link), Dixie Kong(could be an Echo fighter for Diddy Kong), Leaf(with Charmander, Wartortle and Venasaur), Blue(with Bulbasaur, Charmeleon and Blastoise), Raichu(could be an Echo fighter for Pikachu), Zoarark, Zarude, Conker, Young Zelda and/or Toon Zelda(could be an Echo fighter for Zelda(in her new outfit from "Breath of the Wild")), Blood Falcon(could be an Echo fighter for Captain Falcon), Slippy Toad(could be an Echo fighter for Fox and Falco), Leon and Panther(StarWolf)(could be Echo fighters for Wolf), Rodin(could be an Echo fighter for Bayonetta), all four 'Megaman' legends(they could be all Echo fighters for the original Megaman) and Riku, Ventrus and Roxas(all Echo fighters for Sora).

That was just Samus without her armor. Zero Suit Samus is Samus wearing something actually called the Zero Suit which is different than Samus without armor.
@@lamontyaboy718 The appearance of the Zero Suit in Smash started in the game they mentioned, but there are zero Suits that predate the current one, which are also in ZSS's costumes, so technically, you could say that the oldest of those three kinds would be the first Zero Suit, and thus, would be from an older Metroid game.

Also, Yoshi and Captain Falcon are the only Smash 64 characters who haven't gotten another character from their series yet :(
for all intends and purposes, Yoshi is just another Mario character, Sakurai gave him a different symbol in smash 64 because he didnt want to oversaturate the roster with the Mushroom Symbol, and despite having his own spinoff games, its not that different from Luigi having his own Luigi's Mansion games and still being considered a mario character.

Technically but it was just that the anime promotes upcoming games by including pokemon from the generation early either in the show or as the focus of a movie. Meaning the anime team still would've had to know Lucario was even a thing in the games in the first place.
