  • The 4th Gen Nissan Altima on paper is a pretty great car, but just how reliable is it and what is its common issues? 2007-2012 Nissan Altima Review. Now, if it is taken care of, the paper comes into reality. But, in real world examples, the car itself does have many issues that can truly cost a lot of money. One of the major issues this 2007-2012 Nissan Altima has is transmission failure.

I bought my Nissan Altima Sport Coupe 3.5 brand new in 2008 and I've never had any issues with it. I've had 4 brand new cars since that time as second/third car and they've all had issues at some point or another. My Nissan is my most reliable car that I have. I do all of my own maintenance on it and it hasn't blown up yet. Hopefully others have had the same experience.
EDIT: Was involved in an accident last week (4/16/2024) a drunk lady T-boned my car running a red light and totaled it. I'm devastated about it however, I had 16 good years with that car. Just bought a 2002 Toyota Camry with 92,000 miles in excellent condition for $4,800. Will always miss my Altima RIP...

I just bought a 2008 with 190,000 from a junkyard for dirt cheap! The dash is sticky, but the rest of the car is amazing! It had been involved in an accident, and was missing a headlight and a fender, but the junkyard supplied both to me when I bought the car! It seems to be really tough! Both the engine and trans at 190,000, but it could be a rare circumstance, but I paid so little for it, that I think I could have the trans rebuilt if I had to. It seems to be a fun little car!

I found a rack and pinion in the junkyard for $50! I had the Freon refilled in the air condition! Cold air! It gets 20 mpg, and is the most reliable car I have ever had! I flushed the transmission after I bought it, and I am taking care of oil changes every 3,000 miles! The stereo quit working, so I found a Kenwood on clearance for $115 as a double din! I still love the car, and I found out from Nissan that the transmission was replaced under warranty at 109,000 miles! I have a 2010 Altima Coupe 2.5 S w/31K that I bought new. Over the last year , it’s started having all sorts of random problems. Right now, I am unable to drive it because of loud grinding, scraping sound when I make a turn. I post a video of this sound on my channel. It kinda sounds like I’ve gone thru the brake pad & into the rotors. But I had the brakes checked earlier this year and 70% of the pad was left. Unrelated issues - on my 3rd battery since purchased, car smells like acetone when driving during the summer, dash is extremely sticky because it has a melting dash. This car is very rarely parked in the sun as I work from home & even grocery shop at night, it won’t accelerate after making a hard fast stop, the max AC button no longer works, knobs on the radio no longer work (controls on the steering wheel work just fine), driver side window stops working during cold weather, and the center brake light in the back window & spoiler brake light stopped working - it won’t pass inspection due to this. Again, this car only has 31K miles on it. I would expect dry rot or rusting of parts after 12 years. All of these other problems???

Anyone with an Altima notice your traction control sometimes comes on when idling ? Sometimes when I’m idling in park or drive, traction control pops on and doesn’t go off unless I shut the car off. When it’s on, the engine won’t let me accelerate over 35 mph otherwise the car will start pumping on the breaks. Anyone else had this issue ?

Yes, it'd be way better. Imo, Nissan's manual transmissions are way more reliable than their CVTs. I've had my 08 Altima coupe (V6, 6spd) for over two years and haven't had any problems with it. I even went drag racing and auto-crossing this Summer and I still don't have a single problem. They'll last if properly taken care of. I definitely recommend getting one with a stick.

Change the transmission oil every 25k to 30k. Make sure you use the correct oil and you should be fine. Just keep up the maintenence. Also, make sure you let the transmission warm up before driving. Don't drive it cold. I have a 09 Altima.

Not necessarily a CVT transmission only has one gear that's a single speed that's shiftless. Which is you cannot be rough on it because it will not last versus a traditional automatic transmission my uncle's 2012 Toyota 4Runner is pushing 387,000 miles with no engine or transmission issues still running strong a Nissan probably won't even reach that Toyota's are known for being very very reliable more reliable than Nissan
