you're higher on them than I am... I'm thinking 9-3/10-2. Either going to barely squeak into playoffs, or barely miss. Our secondary, while skill wise is upgraded from last year, they're still an unknown. Dline is top 5 nationally, Oline is solid, RB room(as long as they stay healthy) is solid, QB room looking great, WR room is great, on paper.

He has some real momentum and if TN can win 10+ this season that momentum will continue to build and get bigger. TN has a real opportunity to really kick the door open and insert themself into that top tier of programs as they are knocking on it right now. TN is favored in 9 games and have 2 pretty toss ups 1) at Oklahoma and 2) Bama at home. Win one and likely make the playoff. Win both and it’s on as we ignite boosters and hold on cause TN would really start to be a dominant type program like they had been in the past. Vandy is as close to a sure win as you can get in the SEC. When Vandy beats somebody their coach may be getting fired. OU's defense is questionable??? I guess if you are just looking at what they did last year, and not factoring in any improvement over the summer and fall camp. OU returns 79% of their defense (#8 in the country/#1 in the SEC). If you listen to OU insiders, this is the best OU defense in over a decade (which isn't say much as that bar is extremely low, but I'll take it). They are bigger and faster. They also will know BV's complicated defensive scheme better. Go ahead and say it's questionable, and then get back with me in a couple of months. The offense is questionable. There is a lot of hand-wringing regarding practice and scrimmage reports. I'd rather the offense look like hot garbage now, and get these problems fixed before the season starts. I think there will still be a learning curve with getting JFA and his receivers clicking, which is why I'm glad we play Pittsburgh Parochial and H-Town Commuter U to start the season. It also seems like the players have heard all of the offseason chirping about how OU isn't SEC ready. There's nothing I love more than an OU team with a chip on its shoulder, and an underestimated BV. Buckle up, because it's going to be one hell of a season. Great video, Matt. Look forward to seeing more of your content closer we get to kick-off.

Lol this dude doesn’t know cfb. He says “gIviNg Up 30 tO tExAs 🤪🤓” like it’s a bad thing to give up 30 pts to a team that made the playoffs. & was less than 20 yards away from a national championship game appearance. Big 12 is up tempo & literally go look at the sec now. They do this on the regular. Now the tcu game I get. The worst part of ou D last year was defending the pass. We were 109. Terrible. But that also was some of the D-Line not rushing the qb & getting pressure. Look for BV & Zach alley to turn up the heat.. esp now that roof gone. Defense wasn’t bad last year there were just holes & some injuries. I believe this years D will be a lot better on all 3 levels. Finally recruiting starting to pay off for BV. Time will tell.

Are Oklahoma fans a little nervous they won’t get play a team that can challenge them before playing TN? NC St is a game TN should definitely win and if not means there is serious problems but they should give us enough of a challenge to help us for Oklahoma. We play Kent St (worst team we will play this season most likely) between NC St and Oklahoma. Wouldn’t be shocked if we look ahead a little bit and spend some time starting to look at Oklahoma that week. On the flip side Oklahoma could do the same and all 3 weeks before playing TN.

Tennessee has something to prove? Lol they won 9 games with a qb throwing screen passes and 8 yard outs. Couldn't operate about 75% of Heupel's offense because of his lack of touch. As far as not beating a ranked team last year, what does that prove? Any team in the bottom 5 could just as easily be replaced by an unranked team and no one would notice. Arbitrary nonsense. Also, UT stomped on Bama for a half, and with a decent qb would have put that game away in 3 quarters.
And the part about Tennessee being irrelevant for 15 years. That's just rank stupidity. Not competing for championships doesn't make a team irrelevant (as Bama is about to start finding out). There are solid teams that haven't won a championship in 80 years or ever. They are relevant because they have fan bases that make an impact and perenially float in and out of top 25 rankings. There are probably 50 teams or better that would have gladly traded their 15 years for those 15 years Tennessee had. It's because Tennessee is a historic powerhouse that helped build the most dominant conference in the history of cfb, that people say they sucked those years. Because folks know Tennessee is supposed to be great.
Anyway, they won 9 games a couple of times during that poor run. Beat ranked teams multiple times. Finished the year ranked maybe once under Dooley, 3 times under Butch Jones and once under Pruitt. Hardly irrelevant.

The defense also lost their best cover corner as he was injured for the season just before halftime. At the time of his injury he was the best CB coverage was according to PFF grades and led TN in INTs with 3. Losing him hurt a lot and people forget he was injured. Also lost a starting ILB for the season in the first game last season. TN dealt with some bad injuries to key players otherwise we were likely much more competitive. We will see how elite they are as I expect TN to have one of the top offenses in the country again this season. Nico seems to be for real and TN has led or been top 2 the last two seasons running the football. Add a QB who can run and can throw on the run and it’s an offense that is difficult to defend. How is the Oklahoma OL looking as I think that will be key. If TN’s DL can win the battle up front it makes running the ball difficult and if they have protection issues then Arnold may prove to be a little turnover prone. I think TN has 5 sacks at least and maybe more. I have doubts about that OL but if they hold up then Oklahoma will be able to pick on our secondary which has 5 new starters. I’m counting on the DL to really help our secondary by getting consistent pressure and not allow time for deeper routes more often than not.

Your spelling makes you difficult to take serious and I’m a TN fan. TN’s front 4 is legit. LB’s should be improved as Pili returns from season ending injury he suffered in game 1 last year so that is big. Arion Carter has all the talent you could ask for but can he turn that talent into production this season. Telander should be good also. I think McCoy and Gibson will be by far the best starting CB pair Heupel’s had since being at TN. Should allow the defense to play press coverage on the outside and be confident/comfortable. Our likely starter our STAR was lost for the season in fall camp. Boo Carter a true freshman who is very talented likely starts there sooner than later but until then we have a solid player in Harrison but doesn’t offer the playmaking ability that Boo would. Turrentine at one safety position should be good while the other I’m a little nervous about as we could start a walk on who is also white. That has to make people a little nervous. There is more talented players behind him but haven’t taken the job from what I understand. All in all the defense needs to get great play up front from the DL because while the defense is more talented/faster/bigger and more athletic we have a lot of unproven players that may need a little time to settle in and play at a consistently high level.
The offense I am very confident in and should be top 10 in the country and likely top 5. Better at OL, TE, QB and WR. RB is probably a push. Key in offense is staying healthy a few positions like QB would derail TN big time. Same with Cooper Mays at center and maybe even LT with Heard. Those 3 have to stay healthy. May even add Sampson to the list until Seldon and Lewis are fully ready as Seldon just got cleared to return from shoulder surgery and Lewis missed spring practice with a shoulder surgery of his own but has been full go all of fall camp. Still pretty tough to master the offense over fall camp as knowing protections is a must to get playing time. Excited to see him run it though as he could be pretty special.

Life long Oklahoma fan here and this is my take on the upcoming season. I think defense will be much improved. We have some beasts on defense. But the real test is not on the defense itself but on the defense coordinator. On the flip side of that, I don’t have a lot of confidence in the offense yet. Especially after the spring game. We have an inexperienced quarterback and an unproven Offensive line. So my expectations of the offense are low. I hope I’m wrong. And in my opinion, the SEC totally screwed Oklahoma with a freaking brutal schedule and basically gave Texas a cake walk. Politics maybe? I dunno man but it’ll be interesting

    Tennessee's schedule
    UT Chattanooga
    NC State
    Kent State
    Oklahoma
    Arkansas
    Florida
    Alabama
    Kentucky
    Mississippi State
    Georgia
    Vanderbilt
but I think we can win 10 or 11 this year and if something major doesn't happen like one of our big time players getting injured even though we still have a very loaded roster with a ton of talent and big time quarterback a former five-star recruit from last year's 2023 class
Also hopefully the offense can improve from last year because last year with Joe Milton under center the offense took a step back from 2 years ago with hendon hooker and hopefully the defense can still be where it's at from last year and 2 years ago with James Pierce Jr on NFL radar for next year's draft

Schedule also looks much more difficult when your bad and we were bad for a while. Now TN is a team on the schedule considered one of the tougher matchups. It’s nice being one of the teams that adds to the strength of schedule and not a team that people want to get to play as it was a likely win. I remember some of those years I didn’t feel confident we would win the spring game in the orange and white game as TN would find a way to lose if it were possible. I think we put that crap behind us for good this season and prove to everyone TN is a top program or at least very close and well on our way as we continue our upward trajectory and try to close the gap between us and UGA/Bama. Maybe if we beat Bama it creates more opportunities to catch them as a so so season may expose some chinks in the armor now that Saban is gone. Deboar has a solid resume but like anyone else has to prove he can be successful in the toughest conference in the country where coaches are chewed up and spit out constantly. TN has had more than its share of coaches that didn’t work out. I wasn’t sold on Heupel when he was hired but I’m confident in him now as he’s proven to be a top offensive coach in the country but is now starting to recruit at a level that is needed to have success or at least he’s very very close. UGA, Bama and even LSU all have classes that are a step above TN’s but TN continues to move in the right direction as each class the recruiting has had some improvement and has gotten more and more interest from top players that are needed to go toe to toe with the elite programs. We’re top 5 currently but kinda doubt we finish there as a few teams could still pass us just looking at who they are still recruiting. We get another 4+ this weekend but after that we likely would have to flip somebody and that is never easy to do.

@@ianzang2178 I figure OU's secondary has to improve after that ranking. The rushing defense if they can make a climb up that would be huge. The SEC can be pass happy, except for A&M. The biggest thing to get used to is the speeds on defense. TN is s tough 1st SEC game, but at least it's at home for OU. Can't really prepare for TN defensively as what they run on offense is predicated what your defense does when they spread you wide offensively. TN's rushing defense was 4th in the SEC. 1st in rushing offense. 62nd in pass defense, up from 126th in 2022. Would be huge if you could limit their run game. Do that and you got a shot I think. The D'line is deep though and few could run on them last season or make a living at it. Should be a very fun game. I think OU needs this game more than TN with how hard OU's schedule is.

Anybody who even halfway watches and follows TN football expected the drop-off last season. “High hopes” maybe. High EXPECTATIONS, absolutely not. This year is different. We EXPECT to win a MINIMUM of 9 at worst and likely 10, with an outside chance to win 11. Our defensive front 7 is STACKED. We’ve got the best edge rusher in the country. Our offense will be vastly improved and while not likely to match 2022’s production, will look much more like it than it did in 2023. We are way deeper and way more talented and way more experienced than last year. Oh, and we also have 2022’s number 1 overall player in the COUNTRY playing QB. Joe Milton is the aberration. Heupel has been around for more than 3 years. Milton is the only one who couldn't run the offense. It was a small miracle that Heupel was able to get 9 wins with that level of ineptitude at quarterback.
Tennessee's defense will be able to carry them this season. That front 7 and the new, more talented secondary has a chance to be dominant.
Tennessee's offense will be back to being Tennessee's offense.

Pump the brakes a little. The front 4 as in the DL should be very good. LB will likely be improved from last season but not sure they are near elite or anything. They should really benefit playing behind our DL. The secondary will have some growing pains and should end up a better unit especially at CB but still a lot of questions back there.
The offense should be very effective. Just have to score TD’s and not settle for FG’s as that was the biggest difference between 2022 and 2023. Milton wasn’t nearly as effective as Hooker in that area. Maybe because Hooker was a bigger threat to run which gave the offense an advantage. Nico should be a threat to run and is probably better than Hooker at throwing on the move as he’s able to improvise and create at an elite level IMO as he has the skillset to execute so much but also has the mentality to do it. He has that 6th sense and has a real feel for the game. Milton struggled a lot if the play didn’t work how it was designed to. Hooker could make something from nothing and I think Nico will be even better in that regard than Hooker was.

Starting Milton was the right call. Freshmen shouldn't start... Especially in the SEC... And maybe we win one more of those games... Or maybe Nico blows out his knee and loses a season of development. Milton was bigger, more durable, and a good leader. It was also a message from Heupel that no matter who you are you have to earn it. Milton earned that season at QB. You also cannot in good faith look at a roster with top end talent on both lines, at QB, & WR and say meh.

He started the bowl game and had success even though it looked pretty vanilla for the most part. TN was also missing 3 started on the OL so protection was pretty bad against Iowa who isn’t great at rushing the passer. I expect to see significant improvement from the bowl game to seeing him this season. He almost seemed a little overly cautious when it came to protecting the football as he took little to no risks when throwing the football I think he makes a lot more plays as he this season being more confident and more comfortable/experienced being the guy at QB.

This may not be a popular take, and I am not here to make predictions on OUs record this year. However, this is such a dynamic change from how we usually have to approach a season. In the big 12 we were always the top dog and people played to beat OU. OU played to win the big 12. A lot of teams prepared all year just to beat OU and it showed. Just like teams prepare to beat Alabama and overlook other teams and end up losing games they should not. Now, we are the low man on the totem pole, no one is gunning for OU, most people assume we will get walked all over with this conference change and are preparing to beat the big dogs of the SEC. OU will do they same thing they always do, play to win a championship, and I feel as though we will be that team that some other teams will overlook and end up getting upset by because they counted us out from the beginning. I could obviously be very wrong, but either way I have not met a single OU fan yet who isn't extremely excited to see how this season plays out.

As a lifelong Sooner fan, I'm walking into this season fully sober. But I can't wait. I remember traveling to Bama in 2003 and UTenn in 2016(?) and just loved that atmosphere. When Bama came to town in '02, it was the first time I saw that many RV's in one place. They brought the whole state. I'm interested in seeing OU's mental toughness this year. The KU and OSU game results last year were due to undisciplined play and inability to be mentally tough late. Don't let me get started about the bowl game. I thought Arnold fought back in the bowl game fairly well after a shaky start. Last INT was on the receiver. Having said that, this OU defense may be second only to UGA this year. Offense will be have a solid OL for the run, but the OT's are in flux. Coach BB usually likes to tinker with the OL until the Texas game and that will be the line going forward. UTenn could be the best front OU faces all year, so this will be a trial by fire for sure. OU possible has the best receiver group in the SEC - at least top 2 or 3. RB will be 3-4 deep, and for a young QB the running game needs to be his friend. Running the ball in the SEC is tough but the teams that are able to run the ball usually prosper. That's my key for OU. My prediction has always been 8-4 with wins against UTenn (See how Venables has schemed against coaches he coached with previously - Leach, Wilson, et. al.) & Bama , but losses at Auburn (Jordan Hare curse), Texas, Ole Miss, and LSU. Auburn will be the headscratcher, but will be their springboard to a solid year, IMO. Texas is a revenge game with the emotion on their side like it was for us last year. Ole Miss is so talented this year and at Baton Rouge at night after a hard 3 game run (and in my mind upsetting two Top 10 teams on the way to the LSU game).

When bama comes to baton rouge, somebody at bama has a connection to a massive parking lot not that far off campus. Those RVs come rolling into BR on tuesday.
sooner WR room is no better than 4-5 in the SEC.

@@KurtMcDowellOKC that TN vs Oklahoma game at TN was a great atmosphere. Neyland was rocking that night. TN let that game slip away as Butch Jones went ultra conservative which cost TN the game. Did the same thing against Florida that season. Took a couple hard losses for sure.

@@KurtMcDowellOKC TN has led or been top 2 for the last 2 seasons in the SEC in running yards per game. TN should be just as good running the ball this season but the passing game takes a big leap. Nico is also a real threat to run himself which makes a big difference. TN’s OL is also probably in the top 3 or 4 in the SEC as we have grown men covid SR’s, picked up a 5* OT from LSU in the portal who didn’t want to sit another year behind an all American and everyone has raved about him side he’s got here. I think TN is able to find success on the ground and also provides Nico with enough protection to make plays in the passing game. I think the pressure TN’s DL is able to put in Arnold and the consistency that they do it limits Oklahoma’s strength at WR as Arnold won’t often have time to let a deeper route develop and after being hit so much his eyes will be looking for the rush quicker and quicker as well as being uncomfortable in the pocket and just being out of rhythm. Oklahoma likely also struggles to run the ball effectively with any consistency which makes it that much harder. Sustaining drives will be difficult. Oklahoma likely needs to hit big plays when possible but they likely won’t have a lot of opportunities considering first downs may be challenging.

Jackson Arnold is a lot like josh Allen. He’s a stud. Can run and throw. Has a hell of a deep ball. Very high football IQ.

@@nateupton7065 Nico is a lot like Patrick Mahomes but runs faster and is taller. He will also be like Mahomes in that he beat Jackson Arnold (Josh Allen).
Just kidding as I think both will be very good but I do think Nick has a little Mahomes in him as his ability to create and make throws from different arm angles or off platform is pretty elite. He does the stuff other QB’s do at an elite level then does stuff other QB’s can’t do at a really high level as he has all the tools.

5:17 - You're wrong in saying OU's defense "gave up 30 to Texas".
No.. The defense gave up 27 to Texas. Special teams gave up 7. How many other defenses allowed Texas to get less than 27?

Bottom line is that Oklahoma will have to play very well to win. There’s going to be unrelenting pressure on the QB for all 4 quarters. The TN D-Line is no joke this year.

Seen plenty of other people use very similar research to preview a team, players, etc. Pretty tough to keep a finger on the pulse of so many teams. I know TN football but that’s my team. I a little about other teens, mostly teams TN will play but even then I’m no expert and usually don’t know the details but just the broad strokes to get an idea of what TN might expect from certain teams this season.
