  • Howdy folks, well just another day at the ranch. We've lived here for over 13 years and never had a problem with our drainfield freezing up. Problem is it's been 35 to 40 below zero. And has not been above freezing for about two weeks, we've got 2 feet of snow and 9 foot drifts. Well long and short of it is the Drainfield off our septic tank froze up! This is a temporary fix I hope it helps you, if you ever have this problem. Folks if this helps please hit that thumbs up button subscribe to the channel insurance on social media. Thanks for watching and happy trails~
    The Lord guide and keep you.

      Hello Marc, you know the feeling! : ) The problem is of course the ground is froze up solid. So digging with a backhoe is very difficult.
      tried on top of the ground with a Diesel heater, that didn't work, tried shipping the ice out. That didn't work. Then a brainstorm... it's been working good for about a week now. Good to hear from you, you been with us pretty much from the beginning. Sure appreciate you taking the time to leave comments it greatly encourages us.

    If the codes written by the health dept would allow the septic tank and drain field to be put below the frost line, you and the rest of us wouldn't have to deal with this. You're in Bismarck now so you can help do something about those knuckleheads at the health dept.

    I have a biomat clogged field but it’s winter now. To do the same I siphoned the tank to a bucket set to the level I want. Hose is heated so not to freeze and it is more of. Trickle. Thus the effluent can soak into the overflow pit

      It took me a while to find mine as well. Your drain in your home where your sewer goes out of your house is a good place to start. After that it will be in that general direction. If you’re good at witching that would work. If not I would suggest using a probe and just start probing the ground.
      Another idea for you, hire someone to empty your septic tank for you. They’re usually pretty quick and efficient at finding them.
      Good luck friend

    Set that sump pump as far away from the inlet pipe as you can. You don't want it to suck up paper and poo that hasn't yet settled to the bottom. Install that temp pvc pipe closer to the ground so your neighbors can't see your pooey "grey" water being pumped right at their property. Oh, and don't produce any youtube videos of yourself breaking the law. Yeah, that one is important. Sheesh!

    • @BacktotheBasics101

      It’s technically not against the law in North Dakota, only permanent it is against the law.

    Concept
    Waste water and waste if underground is naturally warmer than freezing, so why did it freeze? A few reasons, exposure to freezing temps ,an open to aboveground temps (most likely) . Note in this instance make sure no open to atmosphere happens.
    Next, Ground is frozen deeply, the resolve there is when installing the tank, plumbing and all of the field is well below the normal freezing depth of the ground.
    This is a terrible situation & doing the install is a critical way to be way ahead of all the cost and added trouble by frozen sewer pipes.
    My situation came from having to drain my pool, I went in back yard found a sewer clean out removed the cap and drained my pool, but life went on and forgot to reinstall the cap. OH DID I PAY DEARLY FOR THAT!
    Late that winter I wanted to improve my bathroom, as i stripped the floor out near my bathtub I saw all the cast iron waste pipes under my house were cracked and broken ozzing the waste from toilet flushes since 3 months back.Needless to say I had an unplanned unessary job to do .
    break out 40 ft of cast iron pipe
    clean all that waste out of my crawl space, Note best way was with lime, it helped so greatly at decomposing the waste.
    I replaced all the cast iron with pvc pipe.
    Major operation.
    So be carfuly
    It's really simple but oh so hard if you mis out on dumb details.
    God bless ya's

    Here is a tip for cold weather. Put a quarter inch hole in the pvc pipe about a foot above the pump. This will allow the vertical portion of the pipe to DRAIN and keep from freezing.

    • @BacktotheBasics101
      @BacktotheBasics101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +badlandskid
      That's a good idea, unless the pump would plug it runs out pretty quickly.
      Thaw unthaw, you're right hate to say it but you are. 😬😳🙄
      Luke

    • @badlandskid
      @badlandskid 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back to the Basics 101 The vertical part is the only part that is susceptible to freezing, as long as the horizontal part is slightly inclined to drain.
      The issue happens in colder weather when the pump shuts off. Sump pumps can hold water in the vertical portion of the pipe, which can freeze and cause all sorts of nefarious mayhem. (Burning out the pump, cracking the pipe, etc...)
      The drain back hole is just a bit of added assurance that it won't freeze and have your whole operation circling the drain. I would hate to see you in deep doo doo with the brains of your outfit.

    • @jimmyhill9843
      @jimmyhill9843 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      in most apps youre required to do that to prevent the pump from airlocking

    • @badlandskid
      @badlandskid 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't agree. In the case of an ejector pump in a basement (heated space) you would use a check back valve and no hole in the pipe. But in that instance there isn't a danger of freezing in the pipe.

    Where do you live? We have never had any problems with our system and we had gray water back up into the house. The septic company came and our tank was full as so was the seepage pit. They told us the septic system failed. We live outside of Boston and we have had subzero temps for days. (They said it's the longest stretch in 100 years) Everyone said that the septic couldn't freeze.

      septic can and will freeze if no snow cover and is -30 -50 for weeks, the drain field is the first to freeze the tank can freeze as well if it is nor working right, meaning it is not got enough bacteria in the tank, I used baking yeast once every 3 months, it works better then any tank crap you can buy, washing chicken eggs is the best, my tank is so hot the 7 feet of snow we get melts all around the tank, that all started over 35 years ago when I got laying hens, never have I had my tank pump since over 30 years ago, the last time the truck was here as my wife at the time insisted it needed pumping, the driver told us your wasting your money having it pumped s there was nothing in the tank but water, everything's been eaten up fast, so it has never been pumped since

    If you live on a farm and have lots of ground to disperse the BLACK WATER onto, OK once. Then you will have learned and get the system fixed. BTW: Gray water never comes in contact with sewage to remain gray water. Gray water comes from washing and dishwasher machines and sinks. Some jurisdictions don't allow washing machines as gray water. Looks like going cheap got you in this mess in the first place.

    • @BacktotheBasics101
      @BacktotheBasics101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing cheap about a $6000 septic system, you’re right about the gray water by the way. When you’re front of a camera your brain kind of goes to jelly sometimes. That year a lot of people septic dream fields froze solid. Mine was on a hill, and the hill froze over very weird which happens from time to time it is rare in North Dakota for it to happen, but when it does it affects hundreds and thousands of people that live in the country.

      @@BacktotheBasics101 Hello 101, we live in Northern Ontario and spent $30,000 on ours (Waterloo Bio Filter system) because of near bedrock. Our frost depth is about 5 feet and most of the cost was for sand and gravel to ensure that the system would not freeze which it doesn't but the tanks and pump chambers could so we run heating cables which is tough because we are 100% off grid. What I'm saying: anything can be solved and sometimes it takes money and honestly, I would have liked to spend it on something else but chose to invest it to keep my environment save.
      Cheers back, and better luck

      Chris Horsley for real though. That has to stink to high heaven. I currently live with my parents and we are having issues with what i suspect is an effluent line damaged by tree roots. The line is within 10 ft of a cluster of 20 to 30 ft tall trees, and we get a soggy spot out close to our property border. My father’s initial response was to do nothing and hopefully nobody would complain. But, we live in a residential area, and are surrounded on all sides, so we did get a complaint. His response was to essentially lie and say he would fix the problem just so the town would go away, and they didn’t take a real hard look at anything. Welp, I wonder what happens the second time around...

      This was a temporary solution, when the tank gets drained by professionals, they just dump it on my pasture. I had one company paying me to dump on one of my passengers which needed fertilizer. The state was completely OK with that. There was no smell.

    Does the pump let the water in the standpipe drain out? I don't know the proper terminology I might be asking the question wrong, does the pump keep the prime? So if it does do you have to worry about the water freezing in the standpipe?

    • @BacktotheBasics101

      No, the water all comes out. (The pump allows the fluid to come through) Other wise you are absolutely right it would freeze in the pipe. Also, the pipe that is diagonal, I set it at a good slope, so it all drains. Thanks for watching it's always good to hear from you. Happy trails.

      Sump pumps don't come with a "back flow" valve as standard equipment. They are a separate purchase. So. yes the water will drain back into the septic tank.

    • @BacktotheBasics101

      The thing is,is when I have the tank pumped, the professionals many different companies and are licensed by the state dump it on my pasture for me as fertilizer. The century code says that you can dump it on your pasture. I had one company dump on a field for two years straight they would bring load after load day after day.
      Remember this was temporary not a permanent thing. There’s a lot of misconceptions, this is not a hazardous material. It is when you’re in urine just like any other animal.
