Cray-pas smell!❤ I didn't know koh i noor did pastels, how cool! Heads up, the coastal maine botanical gardens in Boothbay harbor has plein air days June 7-11, free for artists but you have to sign up online. I went last year and it was so nice!
So, I was looking into the Koh I Noor pastels more, and I actually think they may even have two different kinds of soft pastels. I think they have just regular soft pastels, and the ones I have are their extra soft pastels! So if you end up looking into getting any, keep that in mind. Now I'm curious about their regular soft pastels! Lol.
I am absolutely an oil pastel girlie. They are just so much easier to get into, you don't need as many colours, they are easier to store, and less expensive than soft pastels. I like soft pastels, but I would pick oil pastels if I had to choose between the two. I really want to try some wax pastels in the future, but for now I want to have fun with my Crayolas to get a feel for what can be done. I vote for markers next cause I'm a coloured media person and because it'll allow you to finish off the section you are working in before moving on to the graphite and charcoal.
Yes!! Welcome to the oil pastel girlie club! Haha! Playing around with your Crayola crayons first is a good idea, I suggest doing it on a warmer day or warming the crayons slightly first so you can get better blending. Thank you for your vote, I will probably do my markers next time I do one of these videos. I anticipate it being a much shorter video! Haha!
Oh yes, pls do one withe KIN soft pastels! I find them rather powdery compared with other brands. Yes, do one comparing the various brands of soft pastels
Just had to add that recently I've been experimenting with Oil Pastels. I have all the sets put out by Paul Ruben and a few other, but none of the expensive brands yet since I'm in my early stages of using them to work with. I love their blending ability and how it feels like oil paints without all the smell and mess...well...less mess and smell. I love all art supplies though and trying to figure out what works good together in mixed media.
I love them too, and you're right. Not many people seem to be talking about them. I do have a video on my channel using them, I'm not sure if you have seen it yet: th-cam.com/video/nyKAy94Fhqs/w-d-xo.html You are right about them being able to be blended with Turpentine. They can also be blended with Odorless Mineral Spirits, Zest-it pencil blend, and even rubbing alcohol works to blend them a little bit! They are much more versatile than people give them credit for! Thank you for watching!!
So many options! I wouldn't know what to choose. As a teen, I loved oil pastels. I'm curious to try pan pastels. You always do a great job of explaining all of your supplies!
I didn't know the koh-I-Noor have a soft pastels! And Im very surprised about them, I usually use Rembrandt Pastels and Panpastels, but it's so great to know that! Thanks Shana for share all your pastesl😊❤😊
I actually think they may even have two different kinds of soft pastels. I think they have just regular soft pastels, and these ones are their extra soft pastels! I have heard good things about the Rembrandt Pastels, but have never tried them. They look beautiful, though!
@@CautionArtistatPlay oh, ok, it's good to know. And the Rembrandt feels in between the softest and hardest one. I love them, because they don't make too much dust. But, yeah, I love your collection and know about there performance😁 and I will love to try the Koh-I-Noor soft pastels 🥰
Sounds good, Dianne! I do have a video about them up on the channel already, I'm not sure if you have seen that one yet: th-cam.com/video/nyKAy94Fhqs/w-d-xo.html But I will do another one using them soon!!
I love my pan pastels, soft pastels and pastel pencils- they are my first choice. I also love my oil pastels, I use the Caran Dache 96 set, sooo creamy & the 48 set of Sennelier. I do have a set of 15 Neocolor 1 but I’m not keen on those, too stiff. I have the full set of Ink Tense too, they are beautiful. Like you, I love all different type of mediums, they are so much fun.
I have a feeling that I am going to fall in love with the Caran d'Ache oil pastels and will end up buying a lot more! Lol! There are so many great art supplies out there. It's hard not to want to try them all!
I went and bought that Caran d'Ache palette after your last video. I'd seen it before and when I do Inktense, I've always liked using a pallet to full colour. I wouldn't mind some soft pastels. I don't know where to start. I do have some pencils now, but I would mind the sticks. I have some soft oil pastels already too.
Oh, cool! I hope you love the palette. It has made my life so much easier! I will see what I can do as far as posting some soft pastel videos! Thank you for watching!
Yes, I would definitely love to see you do a piece with the Paul Rubens oil pastels! I only recently got into oil pastels and got the Paul Rubens Haiya set, which people say are even smoother than the Paul Rubens. I'm also trying to combine them with my colored pencils, but it didn't go as well as what I saw in your raspberry piece. Probably because I wasn't using sanded paper, so wasn't really able to put colored pencil on top of the oil pastels, the pencils just scratch the pastels off again.
The paper definitely makes all the difference! The sanded paper has enough tooth that the pencil is able to grip the paper through the layers of oil pastel. I wouldn't be able to get that effect on a smoother paper. I haven't tried it with the Paul Rubens oil pastels yet though, so I'm not sure if that will make a difference too. I will definitely have to do a video with them soon!
So cool to see the vintage art supplies! I see all these and I think oooh I need to get out some of my pastels again! I have the Sennelier pastels but have not used them yet. I really need to. I loved when I tried oil pastels too. Ha ha I have the same Paul Rubens set and also have not tried them yet either. I have Lindsay to thank for those lol IYKYK. I would love to see you do a piece with oil pastels! I love the idea of putting the dots for the lightfast ratings on the Neocolors! Also Toblerones are amazing lol. Inktense are a category all their own! I always thought of the sticks like watercolors. Great collection. I don’t know that I have formed a favorite yet, I need to use mine more! I love this series going through the studio.
Thank you, Angela! I need to do a piece with the Paul Rubens oil pastels soon, I have been whittling away at my "to be reviewed" basket, lol. I agree Inktense are really in a league of their own, but of course I need to find a way to include them, so I have split them up by which form they are in, I put the pencils with my colored pencils, the blocks in with my pastels, and then I will be showing my pan set when I do a watercolor tour video haha! That way, each one gets some sort of feature, lol.
That would be awesome. Did you hear that Posca is now selling wax pastels that are longer and thinner like pencils. Mira Byler did a video on it. I would love to know how they compare to the Caran d' ache
Oil pastel and wax pastel comparison is a great idea! This video has definitely made me curious about the Neocolor wax pastels, they seem very different from the cheap wax crayons I have in mind...
I have a set of the Grumbacher half stick set of pastels. It was my very first set of pastels and I created quite a few works with them. There is still about 75% left of each stick. I cherish them and still prefer them to the new sets that I've purchased. Maybe it's just me being sentimental though. The same is with my Prismacolors, they were my first set and I still have my original box (only a few pencils are nubbins but I had purchased backups for those at the time so I have a full 120 set of the Berol Prismacolor). I bought a newer 150 set and love them too, but they don't have the memories the old set has. I'm loving your videos on your supplies of each medium. Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you, Barbara, I'm glad you are enjoying the series so far! It's amazing that you have some of the Grumbacher pastels, I love them so much. And a full set of the Berol Prismacolors is such a treasure! I think memories do play a big role in how we feel about our supplies. There are some supplies that I will never destash because of where they came from or how they have helped me on my art journey. It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who feels this way!
40:14 the white stickers go on the front of the tin. Because most of the tins from CD are the same you can put a sticker on the front. It took me a while to figure it out but it makes sense 😂 I would love to see some sort of project with Neocolor I ánd II. So I can see the difference in use.
I had wondered about that since the tin is plain once the cardboard sleeve is off. I was planning on doing the same thing with them, lol. I will see what I can do as far as doing a project with both of them!!
Dollar Tree also sells those cutting boards. I bought a bunch for different mediums like Intense and watercolor pencils. They're less expensive than Amazon and easier to get!
I love my soft pastels the most, but I do also like the oil pastels. As you brought out the Cray-pas, I was like, my grade school art room smell! I love going through other people's art supply collections, I know I am not alone in the hoarding of the art supplies! For pencils, I have new Stabilo's and an older set from college. I also have a few of the Brunzeel's pastel pencils and I like them as well. For soft pastels, I use Caran d'ache Nu pastels for my initial layers, Rembrandts for most of it (love those) and the very soft, very pigmented Sennelier for the very last layers. For oil pastels I love the Caran d'ache Neopastels and Sennelier's. I also love my Neocolor2 crayons, I have a few of the Cretacolor Aquasticks, but don't find them to be quite as good. I should buy the Neocolor 1s, I just don't hear much about them and the 2's seemed like a 2 for 1 being water soluble. I noticed you said you did a video of raspberries with them, I will check out. And the inktense, we all love the inktense! Now Conte's sticks, I still have my set from college, the classic white, sepia, brown, and black set; fantastic for drawing, I never thought to use as a regular pastel, but that makes sense. They're probably very similar to the Nu Pastels, they even look a lot alike. I like these videos about supplies and comparing them. I also would be interested in your storage of supplies. Great video, Shana, I enjoyed it.
Thank you for sharing your process with us in regards to how you layer when working with soft pastels. I always love hearing about how others do things! I'm glad you are enjoying this series so far. Sometimes, my love for art supplies feels a bit absurd, so it's nice knowing I'm not only one, haha. I felt the same way about the Neo ll's, which is why I invested in those first, but my addiction got to me, and so I just had to try the Neocolor l's as well! Lol. I will see what I can do as far as an art supply storage video! Thank you for watching!!
I did recently buy Conte's pastel pencils. I have only swatched them, but man, they are really nice. Smooth and pigmented. I will be catching the rest of this series from you for sure.
This was fantastic! I love Inktense blocks, paints and especially pencils, but also love soft pastel sticks and pencils, both Pitt pastel pencils and Derwent pastel pencils. I just bought some Koh I Noor soft pastels, and was delighted to see that you also rate this brand. The price point here in Scotland and Europe in general is so good, it makes you wonder if they can possibly be any good. Strange how we associate large sums of money with quality, when this is so often proven not to be the case. May I request that you paint something using only the Koh I Noor soft stick pastels? I would really love to see how they perform in the hands of a true artist, as opposed to simply an art supply junkie like me who likes getting messy hands whilst playing around. Thank you so much Shana for doing this series on your supplies. You are a true mixed media artist, although I know your true love is pencils, at which you excel. 🎨🖌️👩🏻🎨🙌🏻🌟❤️
Thank you so much, Anita!! I'm glad you are enjoying the series so far! I will definitely have to do a video using The Koh I Noor pastels soon, I haven't played around with them in so long, so I definitely need to get back to them! How do you sharpen your pastel pencils? I'm always curious to see how others do it.
@@CautionArtistatPlay Derwent have a small white plastic and inexpensive sharpener specifically made for pastels. It’s even printed on the side of it. I have found this to do a very good job, no matter the make. However, occasionally, you will know yourself, that if the pencil has been dropped etc it will break constantly. If that happens, I use the craft knife solution. I am ok with that, as it is a rare necessity. 😁
Thank you! I will look into the Derwent sharpener! I will use a craft knife if absolutely necessary, but I don't have the patience to sit there and little away at it, lol.
@@CautionArtistatPlay I don’t blame you. I hardly have to sharpen mine, but when you use them on a painting, the thought of having only the choice of a craft knife would make me back away too!! 🥴
Haha! I knew some of you would cringe, sorry about that! So, do you want me to do a piece using soft pastels and oil pastels together? I don't think I have ever done that, lol.
Yes use them together! I love the pan and oil pastels BUT Inktense is my love. I broke all the sticks and put them in pans before they were sold that way lol. Now if the new colors in the pencils would come out in pans.....
I will see what I can do! I could use Pan Pastels under the oil pastels, I have tried that before, but I have never used my extra soft Koh I Noor pastels (or the Senneilier ones) with oil pastels. I'm not sure how well they will grip to one another. I will have to do some experimenting! I agree when it comes to the Inktense blocks! I hope they come out with the new colors in them soon!
Haha! I'm glad I was able to catch your attention! Lol! I think I may have been talking about the Koh I Noor when I said that... They are lovely pastels!
I had Cray-Pas oil pastels when I was young- that is why I’ve been hesitant to buy any others, I did not like them, granted I didn’t really know how to use them 😊. ~ Kathy B.
I think a lot of us have been there! I think that's the main reason why many artists say they don't like oil pastels. I wish we had been taught better techniques with them when we were young!
Recently I bought from softpastels on Temu with some accessories, but I’m a bit intimidated to use them. I notice that I’m avoiding the pastels. First I really hate all the smudge on my hands. So I was thinking about some sort of gloves to wear. I know the panpastels are less smudgie but to expensive to ‘give them a try’.
Yeah, I totally understand that! I usually wear gloves when I am working with them now. I didn't use to, but pastels can be so messy, lol. You are right, Pan Pastels can be a bit on the pricy side. If you want to try them, I would recommend just getting a couple of colors first and going from there. They are able to be mixed pretty easily. But I do understand not wanting to just jump right into them at that price point. Maybe you could play around with the pastels you have, with gloves on, and see if you even like the medium. Then if you like it, maybe look into upgrading. 😊
28:16 oh my God, in a little store nearby they are selling a lot (!) from Koh-I - nor AND they are really cheap. My first set of pencils were from Koh-I-nor and I didn’t like them (graphite and colour). So I’ve been ignoring the brand a bit 😅 But if you want I can check for supplies for you?
Is there a difference between the neocolor1 and the neopastel? I just wondered if they’re the same thing? I love love love oil pastels! I have the Van Gogh, Lightwish sets, Monte Marte, and Paul Rubens. I need to try the neo 1’s and the Sennelier. Your oil Pastel art is amazing! Oh you covered that next! Lol they’re wax based not oil. Duh I should have waited.
They are different things, but both are great. The Neocolor 1 are a wax pastel and much more like a regular crayon. They are like Crayola Crayons, but on steroids. They are softer and more pigmented than Crayola, but still harder and more waxy than other pastels. Neopastels are oil pastels, so more like cray-pas on steroids, 😂. They are both great products, but the techniques and blending are a bit different. (Haha, I just saw that you answered your own question, but I'm leaving this answer here for people who haven't gotten to that part of the video lol.)
Hey there! I used the Pilot Color Eno mechanical pencil. I have a set of them. They are colored mechanical pencils and work great for preliminary sketches!
Such a fun video, Shana! I love them all, but I mainly use soft pastels and pastel pencils. I don't splurge that often, but I did splurge on a full set of Neocolor 2's, and I just finished a project with them combined with colored pencils. After watching this video and some of your others, I really want to try the Neocolor 1's too...!!
Thank you!! Using Neocolors with colored pencil is such a great way to speed things up! That's the main reason why I started using the Neocolor ll's. Then I got the Neocolor l later on down the line and ended up loving those too. They are both so fun to work with, especially with colored pencil!
Woo, lots of pastels 😍 According to Jackson’s blog, 2022, you can use isopropyl alcohol at +70% (the higher the better) to re set your broken pan pastels. There were a few steps to it, but seems easy enough. I had a couple turn up broken.

I would love a soft pastel expressive landscape video!!!!
Thanks Rob!
Mmm, soft pastels. You should try Unisons (Sandy ducks and runs). Please do a video!
I have heard good things about Unisons, I will definitely have to check them out! Thanks for the suggestions!
Do one with soft and oil pastels please! And yes I cringed with the chalk pastels!
"like buttah" made me look up and back up the video because I realized I missed something! That makes me want to try all the soft pastels!
Haha! I'm glad I was able to catch your attention! Lol! I think I may have been talking about the Koh I Noor when I said that... They are lovely pastels!
@@CautionArtistatPlay you were!
I got the Artbar set from Amazon last week. Art with them, yes please.
Ooh! I didn't realize they were still being sold! That's exciting! I will have to do something with them soon!
@CautionArtistatPlay I do think they are discontinued, but someone has stock.
Well, I'm glad you scored some!!
I would love to see you do a tutorial using pastels with water and oil pastels. ❤❤😊
Do you mean drawing water with oil pastels? Or using chalk pastels with water and then using oil pastels over it?
Using chalk pastels with water and oil pastels in the same piece.
Thank you for the suggestion! I will see what I can do!
Fantastic video!
Thanks, love!
So I’ve been ignoring the brand a bit 😅
But if you want I can check for supplies for you?
That's amazing! I wish they sold more of their supplies around here! Let me know if you come across anything interesting!
@@CautionArtistatPlay I will let you know 😁
Is there a difference between the neocolor1 and the neopastel?
What kind of pencil did you trace with on the bumblebee? Thanks 😊
Hey there! I used the Pilot Color Eno mechanical pencil. I have a set of them. They are colored mechanical pencils and work great for preliminary sketches!
I’d actually love to see you create something with the sennilier oil pastels tester pack x
Thank you, I will see what I can come up with!
❤️🔥💪
Woo, lots of pastels 😍 According to Jackson’s blog, 2022, you can use isopropyl alcohol at +70% (the higher the better) to re set your broken pan pastels. There were a few steps to it, but seems easy enough. I had a couple turn up broken.
Good to know! Thanks for the tip!! 💖
