you're under no obligation to do only character work! scenes and studies are great too! really i come here for the vibes and i like the ur commentary is very conversational and passionate! whether it's a winter scene or a little guy next to a mushroom or something it still has your unique style to it and that's what i'm here for!
Pastel pencils are my favorite medium. I love the buttery soft CarbOthellos the best. Sometimes I use pan pastels for an under painting or background, but I’m just as happy to do an entire piece with pastel pencils. You should give them a try.
holy moly.... i just got to the part where you finished the first one and i'm floored. it's beautiful. also thanks A LOT for making me want to buy another art supply LOL i was literally thinking about pastels recently bc i really miss doing blendy soft drawings like this (used to do a lot in high school) but i can't stand that feeling on my hands anymore. using the spongey things is such a good idea, i have a bunch of those little ones and now i'm gonna try to use them with soft pastels before i go buying more things!!!!! (sorry for novel this just got me SO excited lol)
While I can't get Panpastels because they're very expensive in brazilian real, I'm using scraped soft pastels. It's not very pigmented but helps a lot with filling larger areas with lighter colors. I can't wait to get my hands on a panpastel to test heheh Nice video, Em!
The drawings turned out so good, especially the light from the pine tree one. To prevent tape from ripping the paper, you could try sticking it to your clothes first, it makes the glue less strong.
To save money, you can just buy the pure colours and black and white (the colourless blender is nice, too). All the tints and shades can be mixed by adding white or black to the base colour. It’s nice to have a few tints and shades for convenience, though, if you don’t mind paying for it. I like the pan pastel clear trays. The pans snap in securely and then you don’t need the individual lids. I find the trays that hold 10 more convenient than the large trays. Those pans last forever, so I don’t consider them to be too expensive. The sponge tips, on the other hand - you will go through lots of those, especially if you don’t have a very light touch.
dude. absolutely loved this video! definitely one of my favorite videos and artworks (specifically the tree!!) you’ve produced since i subscribed in sept./oct. SO excited over this new medium for you and i was so JAZZED for future me because i will be buying! (anybody else think they should make a travel size, like an eyeshadow pan size for better convenience?!)
There's a super expensive paper called Pastelmat where you can make so many layers of pan pastels with full opacity. White over black over white over black..ect, it's amazing. Also not rough to the touch and you don't need to use fixative.
You absolutely CRUSHED it! I LOOOOOVE when you do trees or scenery! I like how it was done/rendered so fast you didn’t know what to do with yourself. 🤣☺️
For better results use a proper pastel paper that's rougher. This allows for far more layering and allows the pencils to go down better after. Sanded paper is often a favourite amongst many users, with pastelmat being usually the preferred. Hope this helps, but sketchbook paper really doesn't do the product justice as it's very limiting when trying to layer. The tree looks fantastic too, love it. 😍❤
Wow its amazing what you can do with these Pan Pastels! Your „paintings“ look awesome! I have a few Pan Pastels, but never used them… I should. Watched the whole hour through.. it was very calming and enjoyed it a lot! ☺️
Each colour comes with a tint, a shade and na extra dark. The sofft tools were specially designed for panpastel - makeup things work but not as well. Pastel mat paper or chanson mi tentes velvet work really well and allow lots of layers and pencil over the top. Shouldn’t need fixative then 🙏(it will alter the colours). They take a bit of getting used to but are really versatile. Nice video - enjoy play8ng with them. Would love to see more videos using them.
I'm copying your winter night from imagination (personal use only) 😊. Your art is 10/10, voice 10/10, humor 11/10, and now your nails are adding to your admirable qualities.💅 Thanks for not painting them red!
Love this new medium for you! I will say at 32:00 you can see how much the pencil moves the dark colors (which you mention) but I think its because you had a lot of loose powder on the drawing. I think thats why people talked about doing light layers, so you don't have excess dust that can then find its way to places you dont want. Maybe make sure you blow away the dust before moving to the pencil stage?or think about doing a working fixative layer for the really dark elements? or saving them for last? I don't know, just spitballing here.
I'm glad to see these in action. I did some research for the purpose of customizing breyer model horses. You sand them down and prime them. Then you can layer these pan pastels, but you have to use a fixitive between layers. Tried basic pastels with a mode podge spray, and it worked great. Never considered using these with color pencils. Now I'm really interested.
I could but I don't love the look of the pencils on top of fixative, also I wanted to keep blending the colours on to the pencils😊 might try it in the future though!!
Maybe try cheap beauty blenders as a option for replacement sponges, i don't know if they work just as well, but as the branded ones are so dear , i think it's worth a try. You can get all different shapes too, eye shadow applicators would probably work well enough, worth a try perhaps.
Absolutely stunning pictures so beautiful. So weird as I'd been thinking about getting some pan pastels as well so I'm even more tempted to get them now ❤❤ xx
I want these so badly but they're so pricey and I already have so many art supplies that I hardly use and need to learn how to use. I assumed they were like eye shadow in texture too; like a chalk pastel; very surprised to hear they are oil based. I love your enthusiasm, and your art looks great. Beautiful!
I’ve actually tried to use make up tools instead and for some reason they don’t work as good… They must have some type of magical material and their soft tools! Lol I think the blocks/sponges are covered with chamois
Nice! Apparently, what I didn’t know about pan pastels when I first got them, was each color comes in a different “tone“. Proceeded by the word tint, a.k.a. mixed with white or shade a.k.a. mixed with black.… so I was really confused when I was buying yellow okra and it kept getting different colors! I’ve yet to mix them with my colored pencils. I’ve been dying to do that! They are a lot like using make up, I didn’t really like that I couldn’t build the colors more intense, but I guess that’s why they make a good accent, medium for others😊
each pan of panpastel is like 10$CAD so just to get these 10 colors+ applicators would be 140$ (with taxes) you are doing them justice though. It looks SOOOO good. I love your styles.
Omg Christmas Vacation every year! It was even playing in the hospital when I gave birth to my second son who is now 2 🥰 oh and there’s absolutely NOTHING WRONG WITH SPOOKY SEASON EVERY SEASON 👻
Ohhhh I'm so excited you posted this... I just bought a huge set of these on impulse because a local art shop was having a going out of business sale (😢). This is giving me an itch to try them out immediately. I'm jazzed right along with you!!

I’m here for the sound effects and random giggles lol I think using the applicator / squishy palette knife loosened your style up a bit there! Definitely still recognizably your stuff though.
Nooooo I cant afford new supplies...and yet my local art shop has these on sale and you make it look so fun 😭💀🙈 help Also me : well if I get all 80 colours you save like $300..... Also me: Its still $600, you dont even know if you will like it..stop it.
An hour long emrouleauart video??? Christmas has come early
I know, right? I was stoked lol
💯 😊
Yes! We are being spoiled!

Hello from France, I do the same!
The drawings turned out so good, especially the light from the pine tree one. To prevent tape from ripping the paper, you could try sticking it to your clothes first, it makes the glue less strong.
That's really good advice thank you I'll try it!
That dark pallet. All of them. Those greens. Oh my. 💜
Holy Moly that Christmas/Pine Tree was GLORIOUS
Thank you so much ❤️
Golden makes a pastel ground that you can put on paper to create that texture effect for your pastels to stick to. Pan pastels are soo fun!
Oh that's super interesting!!

Thank you so much!!! ❤️ honestly the small palette idea is such a good one I completely agree!!
Thank you so much for the demonstration, I'd never seen pan pastels before, pretty versitile. The pictures turned out wonderful!

Love this! I want to see more of this combo! I think you have uncovered something special.

I love seeing the evergreen progression from hating them to having a jolly ole time

Oh yes I've heard they are great for models! That's really cool!
Chalk pastels are way cheaper for the same blurry blendy result when used with a light hand. It’s my jam.
After doing the base of pan pastels, couldn't you add some fixative to keep the color pencils from smearing the pastels?
I could but I don't love the look of the pencils on top of fixative, also I wanted to keep blending the colours on to the pencils😊 might try it in the future though!!
@@emrouleauart You could use workable fixative and do the pencil layer too.
I love your comments back and forth between filming Em and editing Em 😂
Hahahaha thanks 😂

Love them both 🎉

You could’ve fooled me by saying you’ve used these before because the final result turned out so good?!?!
omg thank you for a longer video !!
Thanks for watching it! Lol

I got some used from Mecari.
A little goes a long way, i found they are not overly priced..and im in Canada where everything is almost twice the US price
this video was so cozy
There’s nothing that my art block fears more than me picking up a new art product. But my wallet fears the exact same thing. 😩😂
You're spoiling us with the 1 hour video 😍
I truly just had so much to say haha 😄 ❤️ glad you liked it
I’ve actually tried to use make up tools instead and for some reason they don’t work as good… They must have some type of magical material and their soft tools! Lol I think the blocks/sponges are covered with chamois
Ahhhh that could be why they are expensive haha
Awesome job...and video was supppa😊
Have you watched Lisa Lachri’s pan pastel videos/tutorials? She has some amazing tips and tricks!
I think I did! Very helpful stuff and I'm gonna keep watching too to learn more😁
Another great Panpastel artist on YT is Dawn Vander Stoep; she's quite advanced but shows how she creates her beautiful pieces.
I'll check her out thank you!!

Ohh ok that's good to know! I'm looking forward to trying them with markers!
Ooo, I have pan pastels I might have to break them out and play with them.
The whole time you were doing the pastel, I kept trying to blow the dust off the picture. 😂😂😂
Intrusive thoughts. Lol!
Hahahhaha I wanted to swipe it with my hand really bad the whole time 😂
❤❤❤❤ I love your videos a lot❤❤❤
Thank you 😊❤️

Aww that's so cute! We watch it on Christmas eve every year😁
Oh no I’m too poor to now be wanting to try pan pastels 😂 time to bring out an old eyeshadow palette
Hahah nice! Ya they are kinda pricey 😬
Nice!
Could you use those long cottonswabs that they have at the vet? Than you would have more of a "pen" and I can't imagen they would be very pricey?
Ouuu lemme check that out! Thanks!
How similar are those sponges to makeup applicators? Cause those are more affordable.
I think it's pretty similar? I'll have to test!
Gonna need to know what nail polish you are wearing😊.
Ohhhh I'm so excited you posted this... I just bought a huge set of these on impulse because a local art shop was having a going out of business sale (😢). This is giving me an itch to try them out immediately. I'm jazzed right along with you!!
Awwww! That's such a bummer... do they have a website?
It's Porch Art Supply in Oklahoma: they didn't have an online shop as far as I could tell. They closed in October and their stock was pretty wiped out, unfortunately.
I’m here for the sound effects and random giggles lol I think using the applicator / squishy palette knife loosened your style up a bit there! Definitely still recognizably your stuff though.
Thank you!! I'm loving the looseness I can get with them it feels very freeing 😁
did you use a fixative?
At the end of each drawing yes!
Nooooo I cant afford new supplies...and yet my local art shop has these on sale and you make it look so fun 😭💀🙈 help
Also me : well if I get all 80 colours you save like $300.....
Also me: Its still $600, you dont even know if you will like it..stop it.
I don’t think buying all colors is necessary you can mix them very easily (I’m someone who buys full sets/colors XD)
@Tsukiyumi3 hahaha yes this is true in theory 🤔 I mean it's not necessary to buy any of we're being really honest with ourselves here 😂
@@lucys.artchat true but I don’t like mixing colors soooo….XD
@@Tsukiyumi3 so we are left with an ongoing problem with storage and finance, I understand entirely. Haha
