    It’s amazing to see the transformation after the second pass thru the carder. Magic! That is going to be a dreamy spin! harpingJanet

      I think it’s going to be wonderful! I have been lock pooping happily away, and will hopefully get a couple more batts done tomorrow!

    I have a Clemes and Clemes carder too. It’s not electric but I opted to get the one that I could add it later if I wanted. I’m working on some CVM roving that part had been dyed and part was natural color, some am blending it. Nice to know burnishing brush will keep the drum carding cloth sharp. When I bought the roving I told the seller I was going to blend it on my drum carder and she said to be very careful so it wouldn’t get neps. After watching this, I’m less worried about it ;).

      That’s great! Just make sure you flick the tips before you card or the tips will break and create neps. Spin( and drumcard) Happy!

    Beautiful! I do love that grey! I use one of my handcards facing backwards as a surrogate Lock pop (shipping to Canada is atrocious!) - it really helps open up tips and remove more vm for some fleeces before loading onto drumcarder.

      Love that idea!

      I’ve always wondered how it would compare with the actual lock pop -Clemes& Clemes website says the teeth are longer and more efficient - but i just clamp the hand card to the edge of the table and it seems to work. I always end up scratching or stabbing myself when I try to flick the ‘normal way’

      @kenna8828 I don’t know. I only have cotton hand carders. I used a dog brush or my blending board flicker brush to open locks before my lock pop and it made life so much faster and easier! Funny story, I bought it May 2022 at MD S&W festival and when I got it home and tried to use it I could not figure out how to clamp it to my table. I thought how hard could this be. Turns out, I got a lock that didn’t have a hole drilled in it for the clamp. Their customer service was outstanding and I had a new one before I even sent the brick one back. The email Roy sent me was very apologetic and funny. I told him that if he gave him the specs, I would drill the hole myself, but they sent me a new one. lol!

    Lovely! You mentioned when you started to drum card, that you were not putting the locks on in any sort of way. Does that make a difference in the final batt?

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes and no. If you put the locks in all facing the same direction it will be a sturdier yarn, and an argument can be made that it is semiwoolen( most of the fibers are in alignment) and if you spin it worsted you can, again arguably, call it semi worsted yarn. But purists will still call that a woolen prepped fiber. But in reality you are making a sturdier fiber than what I made in this video. I rotated most of the fibers 90 degrees on the second pass. Mine had a lot of loft! Mine is 100% woolen prep!

      Once you spring for the good stuff, it’s hard to go back. It is so easy to scour.

    Could you please talk a little more about sharpening the tines of a drum carder? I would love to learn more about that as mine seem to be not nearly as sharp as they use to be, it's especially noticeable when I add firestar or silk to the big drum. I thought that I would need to purchase a replacement carding cloth, but perhaps you have a solution. I'm also a bit surprised on the short the staple length, this would have been a fleece that I would have passed on.

      According to Roy Clemes, their drumcarder is the only one with sharpened tines, which allows them to card fine fibers and using their 72 TPI carding cloth. Their burnishing brush keeps the tines sharp and packs the fiber. I have been testing it out over the past year and I am super impressed. This very fine CVM Romeldale would have been destroyed by my Ashford 72 TPI. I have carded mohair, 18micron merino, fine alpaca and they have been perfect! I was a little worried when I saw the first pass, but I realized what looked like neps was incompletely carded fiber and the second pass was the magic.
