Amazing!
I'm a newbie spinner... have been weaving for a while now. I'm so glad I happened to find your videos yesterday. There's a lot of I'm learning from your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. ❤
Thank you for watching!! 💕
Lovely spin! I’ve had to switch to an e-spinner due to a leg/knee injury and I have to admit that I really miss the feeling of treadling a traditional wheel. On the up side, I’m still able to make yarn 😊
Amazing as usual and congratulations on getting so much completed! About the yardage, I made myself some yarn tags and record the yardage on my niddy noddy too.
You get so much accomplished! Can you show some more fiber prep? That’s what I need right now
That’s what I need right now, too! I think I have some video clips from earlier this spring, I will see what I can do. I have. A Montadale fleece I really want to scour. Hopefully soon!
Wow, the green/brown/yellow one looks like a path full of pebbles. So beautiful.
Simply gorgeous 😍
Thank you! 😊
You’re amazing! All soooo pretty!!
Thanks, Jamie!
You spun an amazing amount of beautiful yarn! Even without your sprint to the finish. I loved seeing all the different fibers and how you approached spinning them Thanks for taking me along! harpingJanet
It is my joy to take you along! More ahead! You will love the Mawata Silk Hankies!
I am so impressed with the quantity but especially the quality of your spinning, Kirsten. Thank you for such an interesting range of spinning methods put together in an intense period of time. Sorry, I can't decide between the options of what to do next, I love then all!
Thank you for your kind words! It was not easy to get it in and work full time, and squeezed in a long weekend at the beach! Good thing I am one of those who only needs 6hrs of sleep a night!
One of the first videos that I watched of yours was a spin of Jkira farms fiber! I have spun several from them and one of their braids was my first TDF spin this year. I was also inspired to use one of my Malibrigo braids and try a felted single. It turned out so cute! Thank you for sharing your tour.❤❤
That is so awesome to hear! Thank you for watching! I am so glad you had a fantastic TDF! Spin Happy!
Wow! Beautiful work 😊
Thanks! 😊
How do you spin 'woollen with a worsted prep'? Do you have a video on that? I’m not a complete beginner, but you will probably say it’s beyond me!!! Sigh! That looks so so yummy! It’s worth getting some polworth silk specially!!!
Stages 7-9 on my 2024 TDF explain in detail. Worsted prep has all the fibers in line. That is commercial top or wool scoured with locks in place and then combed tips to tails all in order. Woolen prep has fiber every which way anything carded. Hand cards or drumcarded, AKA roving. You can make worsted prep into woolen prep but not vice versa. Now add in how you spin it. If I spin top(worsted prep) I can spin it woolen( aka long draw) and it will yield a semi- worsted yarn.
Loved this. Still trying to figure out how to use this in figuring out how much fiber to buy...
Buy it all!! 😄😉
I think both yarns are amazing. The colors though, in the second spin, are so vibrant and alive. That yarn may be my favorite of all! harpingJanet
I agree! One of my all time favorites!
Amazing! Love how the sock yarn spin came out! Can't wait to see the socks!
We should do a sock KAL. It’s my only chance to get it done quickly.
@@jkfiberarts Sure!
Thank you so much for the time you put into your videos. I have learned so much! My goal is to get a minstrel wheel but I am also considering an eew6. My question is why do you move the guide on both sides of the eew? Is it for balance?
Yes! You are absolutely correct. With the EEW 6.0 it will run quieter and smoother if the yarn guides are directly opposite each other.
Thank you!
Love your yarn results the gray one makes me think of lavender mist. Early in the morning before the sun burns the morning fog off the lavender fields in full bloom.
Thank you! I love your description!
Beautiful yarn!!! Hehe i love your little fuzzy alpaca/llama buddies in the background!!
Thank you! They are special to me!
@@jkfiberarts I have a llama like it, they are just too cute. I love all your yarn!! So gorgeous!!
Beautiful yarns, Kirsten! I only recently discovered your channel, but I’m really enjoying your TdF videos! Thanks for sharing…! ❤
Thank you for watching! I am glad you found me!
Loving the videos ❤. Spinning in the car 😮 awesome 😎. I have a mirror dyed braid (do you know what I mean?) have you got any suggestions of what method of spinning would work well (fractal, divide into a gradient etc) I'm not sure how best to spin it. Thanks for any suggestions xx
I choose my predrafting based on the project I have in mind. If you are going to make a project for a progressive spin then strip into color progression you want. If you want more of a barber pole yarn then divide for a fractal. If it’s a mirror dyed braid you could divide it in 2 transversely, and spin each single in order and ply. There are so many ways to do it! You could spin it straight and chainply. You could do a little test spin and see what you like. Have fun and spin happy!
@@jkfiberartsthank you for all the wonderful suggestions. Lots to think about 😊❤
This must be a very zen experience; you really have to calm down to spin thick and thin. I will try it -- I could use chilling out! Thanks, kirsten.
I don’t if it was Zen, but it takes focus to slow down! I found it a wonderful diversion from my usually spinning pace!
Great car set up! And how fun to be able to spin at the beach! I hope it is a fab vacation. harpingJanet
It’s so beautiful: the colours, the twist, the thickness… love it!
Thank You!😊
You can spin in the car! I’ve been spinning for 10 years now and had never thought of it. I’m excited to see your set up at the end! I am waiting for my first espinner : a starling from daedalus which I should be able to get this fall. It is their middle sized ewheel. I’ve been wanting an espinner for many many years now!
You can spin in the car! I don’t know how Daedalus works other than they are top of the line, but mine has a rechargeable battery option. Mine is also modestly priced, but I love it! You are going to love yours! It makes plying lightening fast! Yipee for you!! Thanks for watching and Spin Happy!
I’m a newer spinner and would like to try backwards long draw like this, did you predraft your fiber? I have a polwarth fiber to spin but no silk blended.
I was spinning short backward draw. My predrafting consisted of dividing the first braid in half, and the second braid into 6 equal parts. That will yield a fractal spin. Polwarth is lovely next to skin soft, lofty fiber. You will love it, and woolen spin will make it even loftier! Thanks for watching and Spin Happy!😃
I Like Polwarth / Silk its so smooooth! The colors so nice!❤
Me too! One of my favorite blends!
Beautiful fiber! Thanks for showing your set up. Who makes the first fiber tool you shared, the one that measures just WPI? I like that it is grooved. Also, where did you get that piece in the oriface? Looks so handy to hold the yarn. Thanks again for the awesome vids. I’m a new spinner and learning tons.
I got the WPI tool at a fiber festival 10 years ago. I don’t remember anything about it and it has no company name. The piece in the orifice is called twist control keeper. It is a free 3-D printed file from thingaverse. I downloaded the file then uploaded it to my local library and they 3-D printed for me. Library charged me $1.50 😀
It’s so good to see how you had to experiment with different drafts and amount of twist to get the yarn you want. Too many spinning demos make it look like you should figure out the spinning first time, every time. I also appreciate your patience as you keep working towards that perfect plyback with the gray fiber. That’s wonderful modeling for me of what I need to cultivate in myself as a spinner, to make the yarns I want. harpingJanet
Thank you , Janet! I was worried it was just really boring!
@@jkfiberarts Your spinning and yarny videos are never boring!!!
My next spin with be 4oz of yak/silk. Last time I spun it straight and it has hard on my hands bc it was soooo slippery. I'm gonna try from the fold this time. Would you use from the fold for most plant fibers too? I have ingeo corn and rose fibers I want to spin up as well.
I think yak/silk would be great spun from the fold! I have spun rose fiber, but not corn that I can recall. I usually use the rose fiber in batts, and I have not specifically spun it from the fold. Rose is a very slippery fiber too. You could definitely try it! See what you think.
Also, let me know how your your yak/silk spin works out spinning from the fold v. Standard long draw!
When you spin from the fold do you use your dominant hand? Eg hold the fold in the left hand if left handed?
I use my non dominant hand aka left hand. I would use whatever hand is usually your backhand when spinning to hold the fold.😃
I appreciate this one so much. I have been practicing spinning from the fold since your last video on it ( with success!! ). Real sock spins have alluded me. I can’t spin thin enough worsted to get enough plies. I’m going to try this once I get one of my wheels clear. Thank you so much. I learn so much from your videos.
That is so great to hear! Thank you for the positive feedback! This may be the time you get that thin sock single! Spin Happy!😃
@@jkfiberarts I’m working on it right now, and I think I might be getting a fingering weight 3 ply 😳
Awesome!!👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great information packed TDF spin !! Know you’re busy and have a great break at the beach , but if you have time when you get back . I love the socks you helped me knit and they’ve been worn a lot so much so Ive worn through the base of the foot at the heel turn . Is there something I can do in the knitting or spin design to avoid this? Happy spinning ! Edited missed out a word.
There are different heels that you can try. I typically use the standard SL1,K1 heel stitch. It’s the sturdiest. The fiber you use can make a difference. Adding mohair, silk or nylon will add strength.
@@jkfiberarts I’m going to try and take the k1sl1 around the heel turn passed the short rows next time I think. Mean time gonna learn to darn 😃. Thankyou Kirstan..
Why does being superwash make a difference please?
Superwash means the wool has all the scales removed. So you can put it in the washing machine. The scales are what allow felting. They rub against each other and if you add soap, hot to cold and friction you will felt fiber. That’s is why you hand wash wool. This is done by chemically treating the fiber. There are some fibers that are naturally felting resistant like shropshire . Spin Happy!
Once again, I cannot thank you enough for the details, your descriptions and explanations, and the amazing range of fibres and ways of spinning them. I am inspired. My questions as a novice sock knitter is to ask you about how a superwash combined with a to-superwash behaves in the washing machine and on the foot. Does the absence of nylon not matter for the particular mix you chose? Enjoy the beach, Kirsten, here in NZ, I am doing winter pruning in the garden!
Mixing super wash and non-super wash Merino won’t allow you to put it in the washing machine. It will help with wear so it doesn’t pill. You don’t have to have nylon for a sock yarn. Mohair is very common in sock blends. It wears very well. It does have a halo, so I wouldn’t use it for a pattern that needs good stitch definition such as cables. Note: I don’t put anything hand knit in the washing machine or dryer ever, even if it is superwash. Have fun pruning your garden! The beach weather is not looking great for the first couple of days. I am going to take my e-spinnner! Spin Happy!
Thank you so much for the time you took with your reply. I appreciate it. I do have superwash socks that my loving family put in the washing machine, and they survived!
When you’re doing your payback twist check while plying what are you looking for and why and if it’s not that what do you adjust?
Do you mean the plyback when spinning singles? I use that to let me know what my angle of ply will be when the singles are plied together. It gives you a good idea what your final 2ply yarn will look like. If you mean the ply back during the ply. That should have a gentle back twist. If it has too much twist you won’t have a balanced yarn.
I learned so much! Thank you!
Wow! You nailed getting the same diameter and twist angle in both yarns! That’s way cool! I could see the difference in the yarn. The woolen spun was definitely fuzzier on the video. I hope you had a good rest day. I’m looking forward to your sock spin! harpingJanet
Thanks! I was worried the video wasn’t capturing it. Glad you could tell. 👍🏻
You deserve a break! Thanks so much for sharing the tip about the Lazy Kate! Looking forward to seeing your sock spin. I have a braid of SW w/ nylon that I want to save and spin for socks at some point. Think you will try to spin it for a 4-ply?
Nah. I don’t want it to take forever. I will 3-ply.
Thank you for helping me figure out how I want to spin a couple batts I have! I’ve struggled with it for a while lol.
Awesome!👏
Like to See you when you plying, its so interesting! I learn from you quite a Lot!❤❤❤❤
Our heat is very low here in New Zealand at the moment. We are in winter. Frosts overnight and highs of about 11 degrees Celsius Bring on summer I am enjoying your Tour spinning it’s fabulous. Thank you for sharing
I would love a little cold snap here! I recently finished watching a series shot in New Zealand called Brokenwood Mysteries on BBC. The actors always seemed to have a light jacket on and it made me wonder if it ever got hot there?! LOL! I actually asked Alexa what’s the average temp in NZ! lol! Glad you are enjoying the tour! More fibery goodness ahead! Soon Happy!
@@jkfiberarts I wouldn’t say Brokenwood Mysteries is true representation of NZ lol. Phil Spencer is doing a good series on beautiful (& very expensive) homes here which does show the scenery off very nicely. But to be honest it is a lot colder here in the winter than it used to be (global warning 🤷♀️) Keep up the spinning I’m looking forward to the next instalment 😍
It’s called New Zealand’s best homes with Phil Spencer
@suefisher5531 I don’t know if I get that here in the US. I will look for it. Thanks!
Ohh I didn't see it was a premiere! But I am always happy to see your videos! BTW I do not know if you take video suggestions, but I was wondering if you could make a video explaining about twist-angle? I am having trouble understanding it. Thank you so much for your videos!
I do! But I have done a detailed video on that. th-cam.com/video/lE3MEQj3T8Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=swkTw-LudoWlEiUM let me know if it leaves you with unanswered questions! Thanks for watching! And Spin Happy!
Hubs and I are traveling overnight for our anniversary so I spun for a while this morning while he fed sheep and tomorrow I will spin when we get home. Will it still count as Tuesday if I push past midnight🤔 Your yarn today is beautiful (like usual)
I say sure! Enjoy your getaway! Happy Anniversary!
Maybe I should have planned a premiere more than just hitting the button and hoping for the best!😂😂😂
Community notes.. with a heads up maybe.
How is everyone’s tour going so far?
Hi Guys! Thought I would try a premiere video and see if anyone is on to chat! My fingers need a break from spinning so thin!!!
Could you do a video showing the two spinning tools you use to measure your singles and twist etc and explain how to use them to make different singles for different finished yarns? I have one but I don’t think I understand how to use it.
@jeramietolbert6699 I have done that video! Here is the link! Spin happy!th-cam.com/video/lE3MEQj3T8Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=627-keKv6e9wPYvJ

To me, you are a machine, Kirsten, you are achieving so much. I am so enjoying learning more about the range of ways to spin (and why), and I greatly appreciate how you are so specific on your descriptions. I find it inspiring. Thank you! PS I love the real close-ups.
