Important note! Chronologically, this takes place before Chapter 2.
In this our first Hunter Audiodrama, we bear auditory witness to some Father and Son-in-Law bonding, as Kitten goes deep into some local Norfolk Folklore, whilst Big-D ponders about the truth of these legends within the context of his own understanding of the hidden world beneath human society.

Our first attempt at delving into the world of audio-based content for this new era.
You will hopefully find the style similar to what we have done in the past with TTS Podcasts and Audiodramas where we cover various topics in a more relaxed and laid back manner.
Many have consistently said this kind of stuff was their favourite thing on the channel so we would like to reintroduce it and make it a more regular thing, assuming you enjoy it.
PLEASE ADVICE: DO NOT MAKE BIG-D'S HOMESTYLE OMELETTE AT HOME.
WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE IN RESPECT OF ANY PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH COMING AS A RESULT OF FOLLOWING THE RECIPE FOR BIG-D'S HOMESTYLE OMELETTE.
THE BEGETTING OF BIG-D'S HOMESTYLE OMELETTE IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND IS NOT RECOMMENDED AND PROBABLY NOT LEGAL ALSO.

Adding rice to a vampire's torture meal? Oh that is *evil*
(Vampires in folklore are sometimes considered to be obsessed with counting things, to the point that if you have to flee from one, scatter rice in your wake - the vamp has to stop and count them, potentially until the sun rises and it dies. Big-D is forcing Kevin to count every chlorine-graphite-war crime bite of his food.)

@@wickedAberration In previous editions, it was more a Malkavian thing. Malkavians, in their insanity, could be obsessed with anything. I made a Malkavian, once, with exactly that flaw of counting -he HAD to count something, ANYTHING, at all times. Started out by counting his rosary beads over and over and over again. As he aged and went down some generations (it was the Middle Ages and I had gotten the merit that hid the fact I NOM'ed other vampires) his flaw became a strength. He began to count his enemies; every movement, the length of their limbs, the links in their chainmail, the width of their sword, the cadence of their voice, the flex of their muscles. Through this (and his high Auspex) he would predict the slightest movement before it would be taken. Add his Celerity and he would counter attack before an attack would even be launched. At the latest part of his existence, he counted and memorized EVERY star in the night sky and proceeded to, with unbelievable craftsmanship, to poke tiny holes in a metallic dome. If you put a source of light inside the dome, it would display a PERFECT map of every star in the sky. I miss that character.

@@TheGoodLuc oWoD werewolves are ~mostly~ just as stupid and embarassing as old 40K lore, but the core concept of them is extremely funny in the same way as 40K.
there were other were-creatures, once. then the werewolves happened to them. if the collected wardens of Gaia were still around, the various horrors of the world of darkness would be MUCH harder-pressed. but every time the werewolves got bored of peace, they'd work themselves into an insane theocratic berserker frenzy over how one of the other were-creatures were a threat that had to be genocided out of existence.
and so now, as the world drifts towards apocalypse, Gaia's warriors rise up to fight it, realizing far, far too late that the healers, the scholars, the crafters, the spies, and the teachers would have been nice to have on hand around now. oopsie daisy.
(one group managed to evade being genocided, but their job is to be Gaia's survivors, so that's not a big shock. also their response to the impending catastrophe is "well, that's what we're for. we'll make sure something's around to crawl out of the ocean once Gaia is ready to give the land another try in a couple hundred thousand years. dump anything in the wrong parts of the ocean and you will be torn apart by weresharks. good luck assholes")

Not like fruit loops but like I have to constantly mind literally everything around me at all times, as I walk the line between normal society and the supernatural, and am the sole person in most areas who can do anything about it in those moments.
They are just humans, however, so tactics and planning are all they have to balance the scales. If their targets learn of them they're dead, and if their foibles are noticed, they're chucked in a looney bin. They relocate often.
I'm always astounded by how good the Alfa team's characterizations are, in whatever medium they're in. These are literally perfect H:TR Characters.

Fun fact: Big D's remark about the New World Order is a reference to Mage: the Asencion, one of Vampire's sister games and (somehow) tied with Wraith: the Oblivion for being the most potentially hopeful game in the Old World of Darkness. Specifically, the New World Order is one of the five conventions comprising the Technocratic Union (technically one of the antagonist factions in Mage), and their overall schtick amounts to being the Union's ripoff of the mind police which regularly gets into fights with all of the other conventions (case in point? Two different conventions defected to the Council of Mystic Traditions at different points BECAUSE they were just that sick of the NWO's bullshit).
As for Louis Pasteur, the dude managed to turn himself into a vampire in-universe and managed to come up with a chemical cure for vampirism... and proceeded to get obliterated on false charges because a Nosferatu elder found his success in both regards insulting.

as an example, there is a source book on the holocaust. there is a source book on gypsies. there is a grand total of one usable idea in either of them that won't get you, at best, looked at by your players with a 'why the fuck have you put this in the game you fucking weirdo,' and it is that if you tap into the astral plane anywhere near one of the major concentration camps you are going to explode, for much the same reason that if you use sulfiric acid to wash your face you will stop having a face in a hurry. this has been used by some desperate and/or thinks they're clever souls as a way to dodge arcane attention, but this is a little like building a clubhouse next to an unexploded nuclear bomb. yeah, nobody's going to come knocking at your door without good reason. Theres still an unexploded nuclear bomb.
you may say 'that's still really heavy and not very fun for my session of getting together to play with my friends,' and you'd be correct! trust me when I say that every other part of those books not only has that problem, it's not even interesting to interact with. @cthulhupthagn5771 ปีที่แล้ว +52

@@kassidytucker8431 honestly, there isn't one coherent timeline for the world of darkness. you see, the first two editions of the world of Darkness are commonly referred to as the old world of darkness. the first edition had a lot of lore and second edition was just a revision of first editions game mechanics. those had a rather coherent story and lore, where every year the supplements were all themed cross-platform culminating in the year of judgment. at that point they wrote out final battles for all of their core systems. mage, werewolf, changeling, vampire, wraith. they also had a sub series of books called Black Dog industries, which covered the darker mature audience material but usually delved into edgelord territory.
3rd Edition was commonly referred to as the new world of darkness. they released the same Source books as came out in old world, but they were no longer tied to the ongoing story arcs and were a little less convoluted. Third Edition introduced Prometheans the created, a setting for playing a Frankenstein monster. overall, there is some lore involved but it is completely separated from the first to two editions.
pass this point, there are two separate companies that are putting out material for the various world of Darkness settings. there are fourth and 5th Editions, and at this point I'll be honest I don't know the lure all that well. I only have a few of the books.
so I guess you have to kind of pick your poison. my favorite setting was old world of darkness, I just tended to ignore the day of judgment supplements and I toned down any of the Grim dark components. which, old world of Darkness was a little more Grim than 40K can be.
where everything I've said above ties into Hunter the parenting, the original version of Hunter from Old World Of Darkness was that God had given up on the world because of how messed up everything was, but his angels hadn't so they were subtly bequeathing subtle abilities on normal humans. people gain the abilities to recognize a monster, and were quietly manipulated into meeting up with each other. the idea was normal Baseline Humanity was going to take the world back. those books and the supplements were the most fun to read because they were all written from the perspective of an average human who suddenly finds out that there are a couple of vampires living up the street, a werewolf pack in the neighborhood park, and his neighbor's house is haunted. most of those books are fun to read because they are written in the form of Internet posts, journals, etc.
new world of darkness is Hunter the vigil and since it's a completely different storyline there is no overarching interconnected plot. now Hunters are broken out into organizations, some hunt for fun some hunt to protect Humanity and others hunt because they're psychos. there's not a lot of core books that came out for third edition, because it was around this point where they started to go digital. I'm not sure if there's a new addition of Hunter Beyond old world and new world, but if you're interested and you can find the games on something like steam or GOG there are a bunch of older generation games based off of gauntlet themed from hunter. they are a lot of fun.

There's a thing that stands out to me about Big D's madness. Whenever he is having one of those hilarious insanity induced rants, it seems like he is desperatly trying to find a way, anything to get back into reality, as if his spirit is drifting further and further away into a pit of madness that he might not come back from.
Just at the first story, he is immediatly going into a rant about the nature of the apparition and Kitten has to remind him that is just talking about the road. Big D seems to have like a huge disconnection from reality, and the word "Road" allow him to pull himself back from the brink, stating that "road is what his bus ride on".
It's amazing because while funny as hell, it shows a Big D that might constantly struggle to stay anchored into what's real, or worse, what people around him perceive as being real, and sometimes such mundane facts and nonsensical statements allow him to get a grip of himself, with his mind coming back to us after wandering way too far.
It's like his mind was permanently shaken up by a storm that's constantly trying to take him away, and he is desperatly holding on, diverting constantly his attention for dear life to either ignore the storm, or to come back whenever he is starting to lose that mental battle.

when not raving like a mad lunatic, his philosophy is so beautiful.
and the amount of genuine love and care he has for his family, blood related and not with his son-in-law is great.
it makes me warm and fuzzy inside hearing him revering to kitten as "beautiful child"
calling markus his small precious child
and constantly telling his family how proud he is of them.
The emperor loved his children but couldnt bring himself to be overly open about it.
this feels like the emperor reset and is trying to do things "right" this time, showing the parental love he never did and trying to undo the terrible parenting of his throne self.
firstly by actually being a caring father, even though his lunacy can make him seem like a bad dad.
and someone else pointed this out to
he was SO DAMN DISTRESSED when he slipped up and panicked before remembering he and kitten are alone, thinking he might have put his family in danger.
this is the reaction from someone more concerned with what his actions do to his family than himself.
because if it was himself he was worried about, he would certainly be careful enough not to let that word slip out of his mouth.
this man would throw hands with any supernatural being for his family and im all for it.

But not with the werewolf. The werewolf was pure “don’t fight them you will lose” with no mention that he isn’t including himself in that directive.
But if big D lost he should be dead right? WRONG! Cause if he lost but the werewolf took a fancy to him it may have spared him to have some fun with the lesser big d. Which would of resulted in the birth of his probably werewolf son

Man, the complete and UTTER tone shift when the idea of fighting a werewolf comes up and the music really hints just how seriously Big D takes them. Even when dispensing important advice and lore about other supernatural threats and the oft-immense powers they possess, he still mixes in some joviality and lightness to his speech. But werewolves are treated as something too dangerous even for him to make light of.
Vampires? Ghosts? Magi? He'll learn how to kill them out of spite and laugh at the absurdity of their actions. Werewolves seem to... well and truly scare him even beyond his mad bravado, at least a little. I get the feeling that fighting a werewolf was truly, genuinely terrifying for him at some point to the point of never wanting to do it again if given any other target. Considering how bullshit werewolves are in a straight fight in their war form, that checks out. It takes one hell of an experience gap for even a vampire to tackle a werewolf head-on without being mauled to effective helplessness in the process.

Literally some bright faced college boy who never picked a fly in his life... he wears the Crinos skin and the Great/Powerful Kevin's little speech would have fallen on dead ears before he had the chance to complain. They could demand your complete and utter loyalty forever. They could tell you to commit atrocities on other people and claim it was your idea. They could demand to know your most terrible fear, and force you to put yourself in that very scenario.
The idea that the Government has that knowledge for everyone in their country is terrifying.

I love this. World of Darkness told through the imperfect lens of Hunters.
I _really_ love how Big D got super serious talking about fighting a werewolf and going "No. This is not a thing you want to do." They're my favorite 'group' of the WoD, and seeing him take them so seriously gave me a huge grin, even though there's a basic thing that he (and tbf most portrayals outside of that specific system) get wrong.
A 'medium' power vampire and werewolf, if they squared off on even terms, the vampire has a good chance of winning if it came down to a fight. The thing that even other books get wrong that is a fundamental part of werewolves is that you're _never_ facing just one werewolf. They're pack hunters, so there's always someone backing them up. If you're *super* unlucky, you're facing a pack of 5 which is their ideal pack, one of each of the moon phases which means that they're diversified enough to deal with most problems while still being a murder machine. The basic part though is that they're angry, social creatures that almost always has someone else ready to step in and make the fight uneven. Almost all of the WoD portrayals, outside of the Werewolf roleplaying game, has them being a single, really tough fight when it's really a group of crazy murder machines trying to tear apart a target, coordinated on a supernatural level.

Wanna know something even more scary ? Werewolves are foot soldiers designed to fight things that kill them like flies. They constantly fight against monsters that severely outpower them. The reason they are so effective is that they are pack hunters and fight on groups. Alone ? There are many things out there in the World of Darkness way stronger than them.

  • @user-nx8gf8zt8f
    @user-nx8gf8zt8f 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Getting into this series very late, and the Emp...ehr, Big D's Masquerade explanation is fantastic.
"In this age of cellphone cameras, phosphorous grenades and thermonuclear bombs, the Masquerade is more important than ever." - Sebastian Lacroix.
The gist of it is that Kindred don't just abhor publicity because it's in their blood - so to speak - as a predator race that wants to walk around sheep. It's also a practical survival tactic: Vampires have massive weaknesses. They only function for 12 hours and that even is debatable according with how much in touch the vampire is with his own humanity. They fear both the hated fire and the scorching sun. They have specific clan ( bloodlines ) weaknesses that can be exploited.
Their entire society is based on lies because vampires are extremely touchy with revealing any information that might give others an advantage over them. This is a constant throughout VtM in general, no matter the edition: You are a creature of deceit, of lies, of darkness. You're not a person, no matter how much you lie to yourself about it, and your society reflects that. Vampires don't engage in human society to stay at the bottom, at least generally ( some clans do that but in more figurative ways, they don't do that to stay weak, they do that because there is strength to be found by exploiting the weak being among them ), they seduce, intimidate, persuade and bite their way to the top.
Living in the age of dragonbreath ammunition, nuclear warheads and everyone having a fucking stove at home, the vampire darwinist viewpoint has thrived greatly. The best adapt, and the worst among them die pathetic deaths. Thus, the masquerade is kept, thus they keep thriving and adapting, and you don't even know they're there, having webs of influence and intrigue.
The reason why Big D says they have to move is because it's highly likely a Kindred will pick up that conversation in the restaurant. Not just that, when it comes to the Masquerade, Kindred society IN GENERAL will agree to keep everything under wraps, so it's not just a specific vampire you must fear, but any vampire that picks that convo up.
It does a great showing that for all the powers, the longevity and the posturing, how vampires *ACTUALLY* fight. They don't dirty their hands. Rivals find themselves having gas ducts being built on the street of their main haven. Garou ecologists realize that the lines of protected land have been reduced thanks to political fuckery that they can't mitigate, and the sacred zones are under threat of becoming a new high class resort. Anarchists find out that the day they were planning specific maneuvers for their neighboorhood to have a "suspicious" increase in police activity. Companies devour other companies, people are removed or placed in high places, all through the whims of said-immortal lifestealers.
That's the true threat a vampire poses. For all the claws and teeth, their best weapons are their eyes, their ears and specially their tongues. Kindred are at their most powerful if their mouth functions.

@@KopperNeoman Big D is clearly incredibly knowledgeable, far more than we can guess even through the slips in his insane ramblings. If he wanted to kill the protagonist of the game I’m sure he more than well could. It’s not like trickery is out of his bag of tools, and he might even be magical given his knowledge on wizards.
