@THLR.NO That makes sense. Can you use the Fireball for Ptarmigan? I thought there was a legal reason you built the Hornet originally. I'm assuming you checked chamber dimensions, .004 to .006" neck clearance, etc? If that chamber reamer was worn out, the chamber might be too tight. The way it throws shots, makes me think it's either a bullet release/chamber issue or a barrel channel interference issue.
@@timjohnson2731 the Hornet was mostly a folly. I grew up reading about the Hornet and this rifle is THE rifle from the articles I read, gifted to me by the writer. So I wanted to shoot a few birds with it and hopefully create some nice memories.
Dear Thomas, I am always amazed by the beauty of the landscape. Only matched by the beauty of Fjeellrype themselves (hope my quick google search led to the correct Norske term). I have to admit, that after your miss at 16:12, I wanted that little buddy to live. And I am glad he got away. May his offspring be numerous! On a final note, looks like it is time you get yourself a proper R8 Atzl barrel in .221. Maybe with a fancy Ultimate Carbon stock. You have already sunk so much money into your small game cartridge projects, that it doesn't even make a difference anymore. I absolutely don't want to sell any overpriced B. products, but for the European hunter, their items are just perfect. You know I am right ;-)

Good! It´s a decent shelter, allthough a little heavy and overpriced for what it does. Too short to cover your boots and too noisy to be versatile (as in used for a highseat or similar). But I´ve had it for years and years, so it lasts...
22 hornet is a great round. I took out a fox in one shot at 120 yards with an old Winchester 43 while i was standing and the fox was moving. I need to keep predators off my property, i have chickens. For longer distances and overall upgrade with a Cz 527 i had a special barrel made for a 22 K hornet with a 1 in 12 twist 26 inches long. I shoot walnuts at 250 yards with minimal noise using 50 gr boat tails i make. You must use low energy primers like the Remington hornet primers. I make my own primers specially formulated to work in the small cartridge, but the remingtons work perfectly.
Great to hear! I went the same way with my Hornet, K'ed it and put in a 1:12" match barrel. However, I believe the machining is so rough on the bolthead (this is an older version, in quality not comparable with the modern CZ527) and primer supply has been terrible here. I have enough "emotional distance" to the project now, so asked for the gunsmith to scrap the rifle and salvage parts rather than risk sinking more money into this.
Any progress with the 22 Hornet rifle. I have a very accurat Sako M78 which i use for capercaili(toppjakt) handloading rws brass, rws 46gr SP bullets and 13 gr Lil’gun. Bullet 0,020’’off the lands. 865 m/s. Average 10mm at 100m and about 1moa at 200m. At zero wind. The groups got more consistent when i shortened the barrell to 47 cm. Also using a Svemko nano suppressor.
Thaat is excellent performance and about what I hoped for when I refurbished my 22 Hornet (it had a match barrel). Sorry to say my 22 Hornet has been scrapped. Was simply unable to get any sort of accuracy from it. I even sent it to gunsmith John Olav Nordby (national champion UNL) for a second opinion. No luck, so the rifle is now scrap metal.
I'm not sure where you're at but hunting birds in the USA is easier than that. We use shot gun because you can get close enough to shoot them. (Except Alaska maybe) You really need to be tougher and know how to hunt/survive there to get by. Thanks for bring us a long with you on your adventure. I don't reload but watch some guys that do and those rifles can be picky with head spacing, bullets and powder charges. (not to mention primers and brass) Johnny's reloading bench and eagle eye are two of the channels. They may be able to help, if that other rifle shoots that one probably will? Kenny at eagle eye builds rifles he should be a good one to ask. Good luck and be safe!
Thanks, Johnny's reloading bech was a nice production! I ended up scrapping this rifle after getting a second opinion from another gunsmith. Makes no sense to sink more resources into that one.
@@THLR Especially after what it did to that bird. The 221 fireball is kind of a less known cartridge but you reload so you'll have ammo. (No doubt it's a good one) My brother has a TC Contender pistol in that caliber. Maybe you can rebarrel that action to something cool that will shoot so it won't be a total loss.

Good video. The Hornet was not traditionally a long range cartridge.It was often on an open sighted rifle used to minimize meat damage on turkeys.Also as a meat gun on the farm.
Hello Tom! I own an old Anschutz in 22 Hornert, the accuracy is really fantastic and it's a pleasure to shoot. It is not a caliber for high winds, but I think there might be something wrong with your rifle. Good job with the video! I loved the music and the scenery :)
There definitively is, sending it off to a gunsmith now. Funny you should mention Anschutz, in year 1999 the Anschutz 1730 Classic was my dream rifle. Just never got around to actually buying it.
Can I make a suggestion, one hunter to another? rechamber it into a .22k hornet. it's a far better cartridge, with better head spacing and you can put more powder in the cartridge as well. increasing accuracy and longer brass life, I hope you will consider and tell me your thoughts, good hunting my friend.
Your a cruel man🤣😂 throwing a rifle, but i know what you mean. People around here love there hornets. I agree with NOX though i use a cz 223 1;8 with 68grain Hornady boat tail match drills holes straight through them pick a eye out of a fox at 100yards all day. Thanks Colin. Sadly I'm legally restricted to 22 Hornet/ 221 Fireball for the centerfires, if not I would have used my original build for this, the 6,5 Grendel.
Try 1.5 -2 grains of Bullseye with 40 grain bullets and no suppressor .(very accurate to 50 meters and quiet....No need for suppresor) I think a suppressor might ruin accuracy, believe it or not. Sneak up on powder charge until you get desired velocity and accuracy.
Sadly I've been a little too stubborn and sunk a bit too much money into this project. If current course continues, the barrel will be salvages and the rifle scrapped.

I went through a time when my hunting companion was a world class fly fisherman...he was also an avid and accomplished woodsman/hunter. He was a proponent of the 22 Hornet but did not understand the only reason he enjoyed success with that P.O.S. was his woodsmanship getting him so very close to game in the dense Florida habitat. I did not fall for his "siren song" re. the Hornet. Where legal for the game pursued [ not in your land ]...the .223 is the ticket...especially with faster twist barrels & longer bullets. Living & learning huh?
Siren song was a good expression, pretty much how I got entangled in this project. The rifle is currently residing with the gunsmith, but I reckon I'll tell him to put it under thehacksaw. I don't like handing off problem projects.
Windy, but not really intrusive (like rain would be) and not really cold, no chance of frostbites on exposed skin. Hoping to keep doing one film per month.
The Hornet can be finicky, some like just a small amount of crimp, some a pistol primer. My capercalie gun shoots ok with most of what I feed it with, but shoots great if I use a cci small pistol primer and a light light crimp. Sierra 1210 is a good bullet if you just use one. The Sako 103G and RWS fmj is a better choice for birds. Stay clear of s&b at all costs, they're crap all together.

No wax, but Åsnes X skin 30 or 45mm. This is a short skin that gives top grip and plenty speed. What cover? For the scope, Jakele neoprene cover. For my lunch, Jerven Original allthough you might also want to look at Ortovox Bivy Pro. The latter is lighter and has better dimensions, but a poor velcro opening for the head.

Thanks Richard, yeah weather was a bit rough on this trip. Total sunlight for the week was about 45 minutes and I was not in the right place when the sun broke through. Other than that, nice enough trip. Good amount of bird contacts, so nice to see them about.
Hear, hear! Incredible amounts of praise written about 22 Hornet in the gunpress, but I find the 17 HMR is mote convenient and 221 Fireball much more precise.
For me, the best accuracy has been from LilGun and neck-sizing brass. The horned centers much better with fireformed brass vs getting sized fully. I also only necksize the part of the case the bullet goes into, not the entire neck. Best bullet has been 40 grain sierra varminter 1385 and the RWS 46 grain FMJ. But the FMJ is no longer beeing made. this is in a standard 1:16 barrel. n110 has never worked for me in the hornet, LilGun is a miracle powder and 12.5 grains is a load that makes anything shoot. but since covid it has been harder to get hands on then pixie dust. H110 and W296 is other contenders for hornet loads.
Thanks for the tip! I managed to get my hand on 1 can of Lil'Gun, probably the only one left in Norway. I'm sending the rifle off to the gunsmith to check bolt, boltlugs, action and overall straightness and will give it a final try. Original intention was to have it as a kids/guest rifle, but on current course it'll end up on the scrap heap. Chances are it'll be replaced with another 221 Fireball (just repurpose the barrel)

Mange takk. Ja da er vi vel omtrent på samme nivå, mye ski og lite ryper. Har ikke helt fått dreisen på å filme disse turene men storkoser meg på tur. Tipper du er omtrent i samme sitsen som meg; jeg begynte med 22 LR som var direkte uegnet, gikk opp til 17 HMR med en 2-10x Schmidt & Bender men der ble trådkorset bra tjukt på en liten og delvis synlig fugl. Jeg vet at flere svenske rypejegere med betydelig bedre hell enn meg liker ca 8x forstørrelse og et tynt trådkort med streker og har sett flere Vortex på deres rifler. Jeg har en 3-18x 5 HD leupold på dem 221 Rem rifla jeg faktisk feller rypene med (22 Horneten har en Zeiss 5-15x men denne brukes mest til bomskudd). Konkret kikkertmerke kan jeg ikke si noe om, men min personlige preferanse er definitivt et tynt trådkors med holdemerker siden den butte 22 kula blåser bra av kurs selv på korte hold. Om du vil ha ratt eller holdemerker for avstanden er vel omtrent det samme, men holdemerker krever mer trening for å få det i fingrene. Et ratt vrir du bare til ønsket avstand, det krever litt mindre trening å vedlikeholde den ferdigheten. Min Leupold har både ratt og holdemerker for avstand, men selv om jeg i teorien vet hva strekene betyr er det å vri rattet så sementert i min arbeidsmetodikk.
Hornet might be a slow .22 by modern standards, but the bullets it shoots has been some of the most effective varmint bullets around until the .222 came. So anything made for the hornet is thin jackeded like paper and even at distance it will deal alot of damage.
I suspected as much. And getting the FMJs has been difficult lately, rebarreled this rifle so I could use 50-55gr but no joy. Another failed rifle project...
Not sure, don't know how it is advertised. I have the Original bag, about 900 grams and appr 140x140 cm. Works ok for getting out of the weather, but legs and boots are a little exposed. The insulated versions are simply too heavy and bulky for me to bring. I also have an Ortovox Bivvy Pro 120x220 if I remember the dimensions correct. Lighter and better for covering the body, much better for a rescue/emergency as you can actually lie down in this. But the velcro (as opposed to zipper on the Jerven) is a poor solution. So I bring my Jerven for luch use, the Ortovox for when I want a shelter available.
Get the hornet K,ed and reload my 527 on reloads .356 at 100mtrs I love it bit hard on small game if you want the meat . Looking at the groups yours shots I understand your frustration.
But my ZKW BRNO (Father of the CZ Hornet😊) old model Hornet is very accurate..Green Pigeons.. ptarmigan size is not missed within a 100 yards.. moreover it has that wonderful set trigger system.. The cartridges used is S&B 45 grainers..
The Bergara isn't a bad choice, the full size 22 LR added you should have a good trainer as well. But I already have my 221 Fireball built to give me maximum performance under current legislation limitations (my first build was the 6,5 Grendel, not legal for this). My guest used the 221, seemed a bit harsh to give him the Hornet...
None of us are hunters unless we have persevered with a piece of crap rifle/cartridge that we should have binned ages ago ha ha. Even though you got whited out and lost your shit with the Hornet, it was still a really good watch. I didn't get to ski this year. Which sucks.
Can't say I skied much this season, basically this trip and a week out with the kids. But still fun, currently recovering from bruised ass and elbows as I practiced my telemark technique at the downhill ski resort... It was not very elegant, quite "danish"...
I'm a big fan of the CZ527 but the factory stock is just awful , everything about the fit is just wrong , mine was changed at the first opportunity .I remember it being commented on in a previous video , it's a shame there are so few options. I feel your pain . Great video though , cheers 👍
Thanks! What stock did you end up getting? I have no idea what mine is. I believe Bell & Carlson have a variation for the 527 Varmint, but I suspect actually buying one is another matter.
@@THLR HI , I have a Form Carro , adjustable for length of pull and cheek height , the action has been pillar and devcon bedded by my riflesmith . I don't think it's perfect , but fit wise it's a massive improvement over the child size factory stock . It is a little heavier than the factory stock as it's a laminate. Regards
Hi Thomas I've got to ask you what would you recommend as a good long range scope i do like higher magnification and here in Australia we do a lot of spotlighting and evening shooting as this is when most animals come out to hot during the day. I have a 6.5x55 swede Tikka t3x super varmint
Not really qualified to say much about optics, my own criteria is "good enough" meaning I'll be able to shoot anything I can find in my Leica/ Swarovski binoculars. But as you mentioned twilight, I would NOT go below 50mm objective (56mm will be like putting a torch to the landscape), preferably high end glass and anything with an 18x magnification or higher by the sound of your preference. As for 1st focal or 2nd focal... 1st focal military style scopes ARE more user friendly for longrange, it is superior for wind holds. If your requirement for windholds aren't all that and ranges aren't really that far (4-500) you can makedo fine with a 2nd focal but you will reach a performance roof around 5-600m. Sorry, not much of an answer and no magic pills here: Good optics tends to be expensive!

For ptarmigan or grouse I think I’d use a 22 WMR or an 17 HMR. The 22 Hornet just seem overkill. My favorite centerfire in that caliber is the 220 Swift, but thats wayyy too much for small birds. Thomas, I think it would be a lot more fun to shoot those on the wing with a single shot 20 or 410 bore. Do you have a dog?
No sadly no time for a dog. It's a very popular hunt over dogs in the autumn. 22 WMR/ 17 HMR is also the most popular rifles for this hunt, it's just that I want better control over precision (not that I had it with the Hornet) and the centerfires are better for reloading.
@@THLR I have a CZ 457, with three 20” barrels. I can switch from 22 LR, 22 WMR and 17 HMR. Switching barrels only takes 5 minutes. The magnums are both 1/2 MOA (CCI), the 22LR is about 1 MOA at 100 yards (Federal Match). Just imagine if you used “the blue stuff” lol. I was told my a smith the Tikkas are a bit more accurate, but I love the switch barrels, and I can also get stainless barrels. The quality of the CZ really is very nice. I have a straight 10 X 42 SWFA, that dials perfect. Glass is average, but turrets are 99%.
I have experimented, on and off, for thirty years with the 22 Hornet and 22 Hornet wildcats - I haven't ever had good results and it's not for lack of attempts. It's a shame, because I really wanted the Hornet to work well for me.
Same here, it's a sweet little cartridge and I really hoped for better results. That said, one last attempt (checking boltlugs now) and if not, it's scrapped...
Super video som alltid. Noen ganger så er rett og slett patronen mindre egnet xD. Ble mobbet for å "jukse"" når jeg gikk fra 22lr og 22wmr til 6,5. En gunwerks clymr + Hansen låskasse + 6,5x55 høres i mine ører helt perfekt ut.
Der tenker vi ganske likt. 22LR begynte jeg også med, det var bare lyddemperen som eeddet den sesongen; vesentlig flere bom enn treff. Jeg bor såpass nærme svenskegrensen at det er fornuftig å innrette seg etter deres kaliberbegrensninger. Men jo mer jeg har bygget og plundret med min Rem700, jo mer angrer jeg på at jeg ikke bare gikk for en Hansen kasse.
@@THLR Du sier noe. Min 22lr er forbehold kidden og skjæra i hagen. Har en rem700 kasse som jeg har retta, bytta avtrekk på, ,satt fast klakken, bytta hevarm og satt i ny pipe. Tanken den gang var jo at en låskasse til 25 lapper var uhørt. Godt man ikke kan selge den "arvegods" så man slipper å se hvor mye den egentlig er verdt xD. En annen fordel med eks en hansen s kasse ville jo vært at du kunne brukt 221 i sverige og bytta pipe til x55 her i landet. Med fast klakk så blir pipeskift rimelig enkelt om det bare skal byttes noen få ganger i året.
@@kristereikeren3873 det er vel omtrent de samme konklusjonene jeg har kommet frem til. En manns drøm synes å være en annen manns søppel når det kommer til riflebygging. Remington forblir en Remington, selv om man har lagt penger nær opptil en Hansen i den. Kasse 7+ avtrekk 4 + sikring 3 + cerakote 2 = salgverdi 6 ??? Spranget opp til Hansen ble ikke så stort allikevel...
Thomas hello! From my experience, I can say that 223 rem is an excellent caliber if you use a heavy 77gr bullet and lower the speed to 730 m / s on 8 twist
Thomas has stated before that for this kind of hunting he can't go higher than .221 Rem because that is the maximum legal limit to take on a snow mobile when hunting. Otherwise excellent recommendation.
I wasted years trying to get a weirauch 22hornet to shoot well. Biggest waste of time and money. Purchased a Zastava 22 hornet and with minimal reloading work shoots MOA. You couldn't pay me enough to sell my 22 hornet, its that good.

Ja har prøvd. Men har fått fatt på nytt krutt (Lil'Gun) og sender rifla til børsemaker nå for sjekk av bolt/anleggsflater. Hvis det kan berges, så skal det berges. Hvis ikke blir pipen spart of resten av riflen kassert.
If wind is a factor, drift will be horrible. That being said, 22 Hornet + 35gr Varmint bullets are supposed to be great for the job you have at hand. I am a little handicapped as relevant bullets (FMJ) are hard to find here.

I'm going to give it ONE more try. Sending it off to a gunsmith next week to check the bolt lugs and overall straightness. But it looks like this rifle will be scrapped, I'm certainly not selling it...
Already done, also put in a match barrel. No luck so far. It currently resides with the gunsmith for a final check - it's do or die for this rifle now.

Good! It´s a decent shelter, allthough a little heavy and overpriced for what it does. Too short to cover your boots and too noisy to be versatile (as in used for a highseat or similar). But I´ve had it for years and years, so it lasts...
22 hornet is a great round. I took out a fox in one shot at 120 yards with an old Winchester 43 while i was standing and the fox was moving. I need to keep predators off my property, i have chickens. For longer distances and overall upgrade with a Cz 527 i had a special barrel made for a 22 K hornet with a 1 in 12 twist 26 inches long. I shoot walnuts at 250 yards with minimal noise using 50 gr boat tails i make. You must use low energy primers like the Remington hornet primers. I make my own primers specially formulated to work in the small cartridge, but the remingtons work perfectly.
Great to hear! I went the same way with my Hornet, K'ed it and put in a 1:12" match barrel. However, I believe the machining is so rough on the bolthead (this is an older version, in quality not comparable with the modern CZ527) and primer supply has been terrible here. I have enough "emotional distance" to the project now, so asked for the gunsmith to scrap the rifle and salvage parts rather than risk sinking more money into this.
Any progress with the 22 Hornet rifle. I have a very accurat Sako M78 which i use for capercaili(toppjakt) handloading rws brass, rws 46gr SP bullets and 13 gr Lil’gun. Bullet 0,020’’off the lands. 865 m/s. Average 10mm at 100m and about 1moa at 200m. At zero wind. The groups got more consistent when i shortened the barrell to 47 cm. Also using a Svemko nano suppressor.
Thaat is excellent performance and about what I hoped for when I refurbished my 22 Hornet (it had a match barrel). Sorry to say my 22 Hornet has been scrapped. Was simply unable to get any sort of accuracy from it. I even sent it to gunsmith John Olav Nordby (national champion UNL) for a second opinion. No luck, so the rifle is now scrap metal.
I'm not sure where you're at but hunting birds in the USA is easier than that. We use shot gun because you can get close enough to shoot them. (Except Alaska maybe) You really need to be tougher and know how to hunt/survive there to get by. Thanks for bring us a long with you on your adventure. I don't reload but watch some guys that do and those rifles can be picky with head spacing, bullets and powder charges. (not to mention primers and brass) Johnny's reloading bench and eagle eye are two of the channels. They may be able to help, if that other rifle shoots that one probably will? Kenny at eagle eye builds rifles he should be a good one to ask. Good luck and be safe!

@@THLR Especially after what it did to that bird. The 221 fireball is kind of a less known cartridge but you reload so you'll have ammo. (No doubt it's a good one) My brother has a TC Contender pistol in that caliber. Maybe you can rebarrel that action to something cool that will shoot so it won't be a total loss.

Good video. The Hornet was not traditionally a long range cartridge.It was often on an open sighted rifle used to minimize meat damage on turkeys.Also as a meat gun on the farm.
Hello Tom! I own an old Anschutz in 22 Hornert, the accuracy is really fantastic and it's a pleasure to shoot. It is not a caliber for high winds, but I think there might be something wrong with your rifle. Good job with the video! I loved the music and the scenery :)
There definitively is, sending it off to a gunsmith now. Funny you should mention Anschutz, in year 1999 the Anschutz 1730 Classic was my dream rifle. Just never got around to actually buying it.

Can I make a suggestion, one hunter to another? rechamber it into a .22k hornet. it's a far better cartridge, with better head spacing and you can put more powder in the cartridge as well. increasing accuracy and longer brass life, I hope you will consider and tell me your thoughts, good hunting my friend.

I agree with NOX though i use a cz 223 1;8 with 68grain Hornady boat tail match drills holes straight through them pick a eye out of a fox at 100yards all day. Try 1.5 -2 grains of Bullseye with 40 grain bullets and no suppressor .(very accurate to 50 meters and quiet....No need for suppresor) I think a suppressor might ruin accuracy, believe it or not.
Sneak up on powder charge until you get desired velocity and accuracy.

I went through a time when my hunting companion was a world class fly fisherman...he was also an avid and accomplished woodsman/hunter. He was a proponent of the 22 Hornet but did not understand the only reason he enjoyed success with that P.O.S. was his woodsmanship getting him so very close to game in the dense Florida habitat. I did not fall for his "siren song" re. the Hornet. Where legal for the game pursued [ not in your land ]...the .223 is the ticket...especially with faster twist barrels & longer bullets. Living & learning huh?
Siren song was a good expression, pretty much how I got entangled in this project. The rifle is currently residing with the gunsmith, but I reckon I'll tell him to put it under thehacksaw. I don't like handing off problem projects.

The Hornet can be finicky, some like just a small amount of crimp, some a pistol primer. My capercalie gun shoots ok with most of what I feed it with, but shoots great if I use a cci small pistol primer and a light light crimp. Sierra 1210 is a good bullet if you just use one. The Sako 103G and RWS fmj is a better choice for birds.
Stay clear of s&b at all costs, they're crap all together.

No wax, but Åsnes X skin 30 or 45mm. This is a short skin that gives top grip and plenty speed. What cover? For the scope, Jakele neoprene cover. For my lunch, Jerven Original allthough you might also want to look at Ortovox Bivy Pro. The latter is lighter and has better dimensions, but a poor velcro opening for the head.

Thanks Richard, yeah weather was a bit rough on this trip. Total sunlight for the week was about 45 minutes and I was not in the right place when the sun broke through. Other than that, nice enough trip. Good amount of bird contacts, so nice to see them about.

Hear, hear! Incredible amounts of praise written about 22 Hornet in the gunpress, but I find the 17 HMR is mote convenient and 221 Fireball much more precise.
For me, the best accuracy has been from LilGun and neck-sizing brass. The horned centers much better with fireformed brass vs getting sized fully. I also only necksize the part of the case the bullet goes into, not the entire neck.
Best bullet has been 40 grain sierra varminter 1385 and the RWS 46 grain FMJ. But the FMJ is no longer beeing made.
this is in a standard 1:16 barrel.
n110 has never worked for me in the hornet, LilGun is a miracle powder and 12.5 grains is a load that makes anything shoot.
but since covid it has been harder to get hands on then pixie dust. H110 and W296 is other contenders for hornet loads.
Thanks for the tip! I managed to get my hand on 1 can of Lil'Gun, probably the only one left in Norway. I'm sending the rifle off to the gunsmith to check bolt, boltlugs, action and overall straightness and will give it a final try. Original intention was to have it as a kids/guest rifle, but on current course it'll end up on the scrap heap. Chances are it'll be replaced with another 221 Fireball (just repurpose the barrel)

Mange takk. Ja da er vi vel omtrent på samme nivå, mye ski og lite ryper. Har ikke helt fått dreisen på å filme disse turene men storkoser meg på tur. Tipper du er omtrent i samme sitsen som meg; jeg begynte med 22 LR som var direkte uegnet, gikk opp til 17 HMR med en 2-10x Schmidt & Bender men der ble trådkorset bra tjukt på en liten og delvis synlig fugl. Jeg vet at flere svenske rypejegere med betydelig bedre hell enn meg liker ca 8x forstørrelse og et tynt trådkort med streker og har sett flere Vortex på deres rifler. Jeg har en 3-18x 5 HD leupold på dem 221 Rem rifla jeg faktisk feller rypene med (22 Horneten har en Zeiss 5-15x men denne brukes mest til bomskudd). Konkret kikkertmerke kan jeg ikke si noe om, men min personlige preferanse er definitivt et tynt trådkors med holdemerker siden den butte 22 kula blåser bra av kurs selv på korte hold. Om du vil ha ratt eller holdemerker for avstanden er vel omtrent det samme, men holdemerker krever mer trening for å få det i fingrene. Et ratt vrir du bare til ønsket avstand, det krever litt mindre trening å vedlikeholde den ferdigheten. Min Leupold har både ratt og holdemerker for avstand, men selv om jeg i teorien vet hva strekene betyr er det å vri rattet så sementert i min arbeidsmetodikk.
Hornet might be a slow .22 by modern standards, but the bullets it shoots has been some of the most effective varmint bullets around until the .222 came. So anything made for the hornet is thin jackeded like paper and even at distance it will deal alot of damage.
I suspected as much. And getting the FMJs has been difficult lately, rebarreled this rifle so I could use 50-55gr but no joy. Another failed rifle project...

Not sure, don't know how it is advertised. I have the Original bag, about 900 grams and appr 140x140 cm. Works ok for getting out of the weather, but legs and boots are a little exposed. The insulated versions are simply too heavy and bulky for me to bring. I also have an Ortovox Bivvy Pro 120x220 if I remember the dimensions correct. Lighter and better for covering the body, much better for a rescue/emergency as you can actually lie down in this. But the velcro (as opposed to zipper on the Jerven) is a poor solution. So I bring my Jerven for luch use, the Ortovox for when I want a shelter available.
Get the hornet K,ed and reload my 527 on reloads .356 at 100mtrs I love it bit hard on small game if you want the meat . Looking at the groups yours shots I understand your frustration.

Maybe take a look at the new Bergara B14R in .17HMR. Or find a older Rem 700 in .204, .222, or .223
The Bergara isn't a bad choice, the full size 22 LR added you should have a good trainer as well. But I already have my 221 Fireball built to give me maximum performance under current legislation limitations (my first build was the 6,5 Grendel, not legal for this). My guest used the 221, seemed a bit harsh to give him the Hornet...

None of us are hunters unless we have persevered with a piece of crap rifle/cartridge that we should have binned ages ago ha ha. Even though you got whited out and lost your shit with the Hornet, it was still a really good watch. I didn't get to ski this year. Which sucks.
Can't say I skied much this season, basically this trip and a week out with the kids. But still fun, currently recovering from bruised ass and elbows as I practiced my telemark technique at the downhill ski resort... It was not very elegant, quite "danish"...
I'm a big fan of the CZ527 but the factory stock is just awful , everything about the fit is just wrong , mine was changed at the first opportunity .I remember it being commented on in a previous video , it's a shame there are so few options.

I have a Form Carro , adjustable for length of pull and cheek height , the action has been pillar and devcon bedded by my riflesmith . I don't think it's perfect , but fit wise it's a massive improvement over the child size factory stock . It is a little heavier than the factory stock as it's a laminate.

Hi Thomas I've got to ask you what would you recommend as a good long range scope i do like higher magnification and here in Australia we do a lot of spotlighting and evening shooting as this is when most animals come out to hot during the day. I have a 6.5x55 swede Tikka t3x super varmint
Not really qualified to say much about optics, my own criteria is "good enough" meaning I'll be able to shoot anything I can find in my Leica/ Swarovski binoculars. But as you mentioned twilight, I would NOT go below 50mm objective (56mm will be like putting a torch to the landscape), preferably high end glass and anything with an 18x magnification or higher by the sound of your preference. As for 1st focal or 2nd focal... 1st focal military style scopes ARE more user friendly for longrange, it is superior for wind holds. If your requirement for windholds aren't all that and ranges aren't really that far (4-500) you can makedo fine with a 2nd focal but you will reach a performance roof around 5-600m. Sorry, not much of an answer and no magic pills here: Good optics tends to be expensive!

For ptarmigan or grouse I think I’d use a 22 WMR or an 17 HMR. The 22 Hornet just seem overkill. My favorite centerfire in that caliber is the 220 Swift, but thats wayyy too much for small birds.
Thomas, I think it would be a lot more fun to shoot those on the wing with a single shot 20 or 410 bore. Do you have a dog?
No sadly no time for a dog. It's a very popular hunt over dogs in the autumn. 22 WMR/ 17 HMR is also the most popular rifles for this hunt, it's just that I want better control over precision (not that I had it with the Hornet) and the centerfires are better for reloading.
@@THLR I have a CZ 457, with three 20” barrels. I can switch from 22 LR, 22 WMR and 17 HMR. Switching barrels only takes 5 minutes. The magnums are both 1/2 MOA (CCI), the 22LR is about 1 MOA at 100 yards (Federal Match). Just imagine if you used “the blue stuff” lol.
I was told my a smith the Tikkas are a bit more accurate, but I love the switch barrels, and I can also get stainless barrels. The quality of the CZ really is very nice.
I have a straight 10 X 42 SWFA, that dials perfect. Glass is average, but turrets are 99%.
I have experimented, on and off, for thirty years with the 22 Hornet and 22 Hornet wildcats - I haven't ever had good results and it's not for lack of attempts. It's a shame, because I really wanted the Hornet to work well for me.
Same here, it's a sweet little cartridge and I really hoped for better results. That said, one last attempt (checking boltlugs now) and if not, it's scrapped...

Super video som alltid. Noen ganger så er rett og slett patronen mindre egnet xD. Ble mobbet for å "jukse"" når jeg gikk fra 22lr og 22wmr til 6,5. En gunwerks clymr + Hansen låskasse + 6,5x55 høres i mine ører helt perfekt ut.
Der tenker vi ganske likt. 22LR begynte jeg også med, det var bare lyddemperen som eeddet den sesongen; vesentlig flere bom enn treff. Jeg bor såpass nærme svenskegrensen at det er fornuftig å innrette seg etter deres kaliberbegrensninger. Men jo mer jeg har bygget og plundret med min Rem700, jo mer angrer jeg på at jeg ikke bare gikk for en Hansen kasse.
@@THLR Du sier noe. Min 22lr er forbehold kidden og skjæra i hagen. Har en rem700 kasse som jeg har retta, bytta avtrekk på, ,satt fast klakken, bytta hevarm og satt i ny pipe. Tanken den gang var jo at en låskasse til 25 lapper var uhørt. Godt man ikke kan selge den "arvegods" så man slipper å se hvor mye den egentlig er verdt xD. En annen fordel med eks en hansen s kasse ville jo vært at du kunne brukt 221 i sverige og bytta pipe til x55 her i landet. Med fast klakk så blir pipeskift rimelig enkelt om det bare skal byttes noen få ganger i året.

Remington forblir en Remington, selv om man har lagt penger nær opptil en Hansen i den. Kasse 7+ avtrekk 4 + sikring 3 + cerakote 2 = salgverdi 6 ??? Spranget opp til Hansen ble ikke så stort allikevel...

On my k-hornet I shoot 45 grains bullets, RS30 Reload Swiss powder and Federal small primers.
As I wrote yesterday, the transformation from 22 Hornet to 22 K-Hornet improved drammatically the groups.

Thomas hello! From my experience, I can say that 223 rem is an excellent caliber if you use a heavy 77gr bullet and lower the speed to 730 m / s on 8 twist
Thomas has stated before that for this kind of hunting he can't go higher than .221 Rem because that is the maximum legal limit to take on a snow mobile when hunting. Otherwise excellent recommendation.
I would have to agree, sadly the legal limit for this hunt is 22 Hornet and 221 Fireball.

I wasted years trying to get a weirauch 22hornet to shoot well. Biggest waste of time and money. Purchased a Zastava 22 hornet and with minimal reloading work shoots MOA. You couldn't pay me enough to sell my 22 hornet, its that good.

No, rather you were quite observant. I mounted a Swaro 7x50 on the rifle just to eliminate the possibility that the old Zeiss 5-15×42 was faulty.

Ja har prøvd. Men har fått fatt på nytt krutt (Lil'Gun) og sender rifla til børsemaker nå for sjekk av bolt/anleggsflater. Hvis det kan berges, så skal det berges. Hvis ikke blir pipen spart of resten av riflen kassert.

Just got a .22 hornet (Cz 427 wood stock) for free. Thought ill use it for calling foxes and hunting them over bait but that wind drift ...idk.
If wind is a factor, drift will be horrible. That being said, 22 Hornet + 35gr Varmint bullets are supposed to be great for the job you have at hand. I am a little handicapped as relevant bullets (FMJ) are hard to find here.

@@payam7777777 yes. It would probably cost me around €2000 euro to set up a rifle and the high velocity would ruin the meat. I'll put that money towards more hunting instead

You have complained about it for a long time, I was waiting for you to give up on that rifle / cartridge. Not fun when you feel the equipment hold you back.
I'm going to give it ONE more try. Sending it off to a gunsmith next week to check the bolt lugs and overall straightness. But it looks like this rifle will be scrapped, I'm certainly not selling it...

Already done, also put in a match barrel. No luck so far. It currently resides with the gunsmith for a final check - it's do or die for this rifle now.
