- Where to find the hat / pizza needed to unlock the Rare Specimen, the Rarest Specimen and Pepperoni Precipitation, and usefull spots to leave them at. Both secret endings included in the video.
This concludes the new achievements I wanted to cover, had a great time making these videos. I'd love to do more, so if you still have some other achievements you struggle with and would like to see a guide for, please let me know! I did the Rare Specimen one back in 2015 and thought it counldn´t get any worse, but this raises the bullshitfactor to another level.
I can see how having to replay the game multiple times isn't the most fun, but it's nottoo bad imo. Anyway if you really don't want to carry the items to the very end, you could make it easy for yourself and use console comamnds.

I agree, you were the one complaining though, I was just proposing an alternative. But for real, Xen is so beautiful that I kinda enjoyed playing through it multiple times. If you haven't played it yet, definitely do so.
@@fressh9948 I just finished those 2 achievments, something that really tilted me was when you picked stuff up and started sprinting immediatly you would drop the the thing you are carrying.
The most frustrating thing for me was the pizza getting stuck in the vents in interloper. Thank god for quicksaves.
In We've Got Hostiles, in the famous "Open the silo doors, they're coming for us!" you can leave the Hat safely by the silo door.
In Surface Tension, while swimming under the dam, your Hat will teleport out of your hands and respawn downriver.

I guess the best way to get both achievements in the most efficient way is to bring both items as far as possible through manual saves, then finish a game with one of them, reload manual save, pick another and finish with it.
I did this, was a fucking hell bringing both pizza and hat at the same time, in some sections of xen i had to grenade jump back to a previous ledge you cant normaly get to with normal jump, i left the pizza before the gargantuas lair chase and finished the game with the hat and now i'm going for the pizza.
@@muatring be careful there is a patch coming that breaks saves, check out announcements in Steam. Also, for other people, heads up, back when I was going for this achievement, spoiler alert, the zen section with a lift, almost at the end of the game, before Nihilant, would clip both hat and pizza, so I could bring only one of them, cause other one would always clip under the floor.
all of this really reminds me of how much of this game dangles the exit in front of you, but requires you to either get an npc or find another way in

You know? I was imagine Gordon Freeman with the hat on before Xen update.
The hardest thing was the ladders. Freaking pain in the buttock. I love this game but does Dr. Freeman really need to hold everything one whole meter away from his body? First I stuck at the one on the cliff right after shooting down that apache. Cheated my way through with noclip. Then I'm now stuck again in Forget about Freeman. At the ladder up after squeezing through two giant cogwheel. Noclip couldn't save me this time because the trigger for loading the next map is right on the middle of the ladder.
Ladders are a little tricky with items, yeah.. Keep trying, I'm sure you can eventually get it to work for you. Maybe try getting on a ladder and turning around, getting up backwards. Might be a little easier as long as there isn't anything blocking the other side.
Yeah, that ladder is probably one of the worst in the game, but like FreSsh said you can turn at certain angles to hold it straight. Any other ladders that don't have load zones can be skipped with the shotgun by shooting it into the air, and so can the lambda labs teleporter puzzle if you're patient
You can quite easily do one there but taking both is almost impossible at that point ...
Yeah there's literally zero challenge or skill in making the ladders fucking annoying and stupid as fuck. The challenge should be trying not to die will carrying the hat/pizza or not losing track of it while needing to complete other tasks, not carrying it up a fucking ladder.
I just love how in We've Got Hostiles, Blast Pit, and Power Up you only have to leave the hat somewhere while finishing the level and it's that easy but in On A Rail you have to bring it with you on that train ride.

You got most of the ones I got, except for Power Up. You can leave the hat in the control room overlooking the train station, where the wounded guard tells you what to do. Return there once the Garg is defeated and you can continue on. That's about the only one you missed that I can think of.
I think it's possible to yeet your item off the side of the dam in Surface Tension into the river below, and then retrieve it later. I'm not actually sure, though. It's a minor convenience, anyway.
Keep the hat in a certain position (looking a bit down) in the headcrab spam lift down going part
Sometimes there is a bug where the hat is stuck in the air. Shoot it and it will fall down
If needed throw and shoot hat with shotgun or magnum if a ladder is troublesome
Or move up stairs slowly. Rotate horizontally. Look in sides where there is enough space for the hat
Or go up stairs looking up and a bit to the side.
Office complex, can’t carry hat into vent, need to leave it by the big locked door
Office complex end, jumping on a ladder, sprint and jump forward, then look to the side before impacting the ladder
Power up leave the hat in the room with the dying guard/place where you turn on the power and kill the garg
Blast pit leave the hat in the area where the tentacle kill button is
We got hostiles leave it by the silo door in the beginning of the chapter
Surface tension, jumping into water tunnel after two itchies near a tower and a destroyed bridge to it, the hat isn’t lost. Look around, it will always be there
Some surface chapter leave it by the building where the guard is savagely beaten by an alien grunt
Lambda core leave it by the maint access, where the battery is up a ladder
Xen when in the giant structure creating a portal, leave the hat at the first big button
Gonarch leave the hat in a safe place before first fight. Near the crystal you need to push behind the rock
In water during gonarch lair, hat can be down. Take it and it will float up
When killing the gonarch without the gas, the hat can get lost in the yellow crystals.
Don’t put hat into healing pools
Interloper assembly line controller+grunt spam, leave hat in the beginning, run to next zone. Go back. Controllers are despawned, kill grunts, take hat, continue
Interloper when vent you need to shoot to continue, jump into it and place a tripmine on it. Then take hat and activate the beam
Be careful during ascention part. Place hat in the middle of the spinning eyes hiding crystal things

I'll never have the time to do them. The gas cannister one in Xen is worth it I think. If it stopped bugging out on me.

While I don't think it's possible, not sure how the game will handle spawning both things at the same location on Xen, and also bringing one thing through the vents in Interloper is bad enough I think :D Though if you are really gonna try, let me know how it went / if it's really possible to teleports both of them at once.
@@fressh9948 You can't teleport 2 things from Xen to the Gonarch lair since Freeman throws like a girl. You can only teleport one thing.

This is just like taking that Lawn Gnome to White Forest in Half Life 2: Episode 2. But much Harder. Fortunate for me I found a few work around codes like buddha, infinite ammo, and ways to keep my enemies at bay to ignore me. I find it to be a cinch. But more difficult I’ll deliver them both into Xen and accomplish both tasks with a single stroke.
Gnome was more annoying imo, at least you can sprint with items in Black Mesa. Not to mention every map walkable whereas episode 2 is designed to be driven with a car (which the gnome never fits in).

There is a hidden pizza in Lambda Core. The achievment should work with that too. Certainly faster.
EDIT: Apperently this doesn't work. For the achievment you need to haul the pizza from Questionable Ethics.

@@SzwarcuKX5 After you got the gluon gon and go down with the elevator. Turn left & and left then to the right where there is a living security guard with a shotgun. Behind him is an elevator which doesn't work and otherwise stuck. If you look up to the ceiling above it, you can see there is a hidden room of sort you can't reach. Grenade time! 1-2 well aimed grenade and the hidden pizza should fall down for you.

The hat wasn't that bad to drag around, now the pizza on the other hand...
Where should I keep the hat in the last area of gonarchs lair, I was trying to do it with pizza and I kept losing the pizza as soon as the floor drops. Do I strictly need to do hat with the cyanogen? Coz I've done the same for pizza with cyanogen, carrying hat and cyanogen again together will be a pain in my ass.

is it possible to carry both the pizza and the hat into the lambda core portal in the same playthrough? i sure as hell don't want to replay the whole xen twice for this.
As if having to do the hat thing all over again wasn’t bad enough now I have to do it with a fucking pizza.
At least you don't have to carry the pizza from the very beggining of the game, questionable ethics isn't that far off of Xen.

I'm at this part of Surface Tension with the pizza, after you take out the helicopter and take the ladders up the cliffside, and this shit is pissing me off. I can't get this pizza up there without Gordon dropping it, and I can't seem to shoot it up as easily as the hat when I did the Rarest Specimen challenge. Any ideas?
Throw it straight up the ladder and start climbing, whacking it with the crowbar the entire way up. Since there's a tight railing around the ladder the pizza gets forced up and with a little luck it'll land right at the top so you can easily climb up afterwards. Surprisingly easy and straightforward solution. You'll need to do it again in Forget About Freeman right before the final marine battle.
I tried to take both of them at once, but there is part where you run before Gargantua at the end of Surface Tension level and I have to choose which to leave. I did manual save there and from this part I have to finish game two times to gain both achievement.
Just got it there by throw the hat -> sprint to the pizza -> throw the pizza -> sprint to the hat -> repeat. But I got heavy damage and could not have done it if I wasn't in normal difficulty. Now I am stuck with a ladder in Forget about freeman
It's possible, I did it too and I'm at Lambda Core now on Hard difficulty.
I pick the pizza first, run out and throw it at a safe place (the area after the 2 Humvees and before the exit); the roof will collapse later and you won't be able to go back and get the hat). If you're lucky, the Gargantua might stop chasing and stand around outside the gate where you ran out from at the beginning. You might have to load a few times for it to happen.
After that, I sneak back in a corner (the small area on the left after you ran out of the gate) and wait for the Gargantua to face away from me and the gate and then run back in to get the hat.
Then I sneak back to the gate with the item and wait for the Gargantua to face away, if you're lucky, it may walk down further. If it does, you're in luck. While it's not looking at you, run out to before the exit and throw hat out of the exit, then go back grab the pizza and throw it out of the exit. (If you exit first without throwing the items out, you won't be able to enter again).
You might have to try a few times to get the hang of it. You need to take note before you enter any door or gate (especially those before map load). Make sure you do a manual save first and then place the items into the door before you enter it.
@@babathedwarf the ladder is a pain, I grab the item first and then mount the ladder and do a quick save. Then I try to find the right angle to get it done. From what I observe, it's best to keep the item within the crosshair without it been push out.
Do you need to fight nihilith or does it skip the boss battle? If I need to fight him, do I need to keep track of the hat or just beat him?
You do need to fight Nihilanth, but you don't need to worry about the hat / pizza at that point. I actually don't think it even spawn in the boss room. You'll unlock the respective achievements after you kill him.
So... when you enter the portal at the end of the interloper level is that the last time you need to worry about finding/carrying the pizza/hat?
Nothing to do/worry about on the nihilanth level?
Exactly. When you go through the teleport, don't panic that you didn't unlock the achievement right away, you'll unlock it after defeating Nihilanth :)

Is it possible to get Rarest Specimen, and Pepperoni Precipitation in the same playthrough? I worry that you can only take one to Xen at a time, or that there is a moment where it would be impossible to take both.
People have tried and from what I remember they all (or most) got stuck at one point or another. I remember someone getting stuck at the gargantua chase I think?
So while I can't be 100% sure it's not possible, carrying both sound really annoying and I think it might just be faster to do them separately. Or bring both as far as you can without it being too bothersome so you can then do the 2nd run from a later point in the game.
Hey I'm having trouble at near the end of interloper where there is a pile of alien bodies and a vent that needs to shot open. As soon as I shoot the vent I get sucked in and am unable to grab the hat while doing so. I also tried launching the hat into the vent , quickly shooting it w gluon and tried grabbing it whilst in the vent but it's too fast. Also cannot climb back into this particular vent to get the hat. I've tried shooting the vent in corners behind alien bodies (to grab hat first then go in vent) but wherever I shoot it it always sucks me in. How did you overcome this? Please help

Two way depending on ladder : tube ladder or caged one(some) : throw it above you and it it repeatedly with crowbar, free ladder or caged one(others) : try until you got on first step and then climb backward, hard bit is to get it through plateform holes top of ladders some-times

my question is though...can you carry the hat and pizza at the same time and get the ultimate ending where there is pizza falling from the sky AND gmans wearing a hat? seems like gold.
So far, i've brought both of them to surface tension chapter, will update if I can do it until xen at least.
It won't be possible to go through Xen with both because of the jump mechanic... But at least, all I'll have to do will be reloading Xen starting to finish both achievements
Bersez Nathan I’ve done them both individually because it’s really fun to play black Mesa. But if they make an achievement where you carry both, then I’ll do it.
@@TheRewinderCC having done Black mesa seeral time before Xen (including doing the rare specimen some years ago) and having all achievement except thoses 2, I'm not gonna do another full game (let's say 60%) for the pizza.
Update: I've reached lambda core with both of them and trust me, it wasn't easy.... the 2 worst part so far were, the second gargantua that chase you, the path get destroyed so you defenitly need to bring both during your run... and... you know... juggling with both while a Gargantua chase you, took a looooot of trials.
Second part (less hard, but annoying) the ladder in surface tension which embedded a loading... carrying the pizza was hell (even using crowbar) took a lot of trials, but even then, less hard than the gargantua
Nah, at the end of Interloper when you reach the top of the big-ass elevator you can only hold 1 item, so its not possible to do them both without cheating
i cant understand the logic of take in hand a single hat, but in the inventory freeman have a lot of weapons like a bazooka. OK, ALL NORMAL, YES....AM...YES.
It doesn't make much sense, sure. But just picking up the hat at the start of the game only for it to be in the inventory kind of defeats the purpose of the achievement, doesn't it?

Maybe try loading a save from lambda core, before you throw it in the teleporter and try going from there? I'm afraid there's not much else you can try, unless you were to use console to spawn the hat.
FreSsh I’ve tried reloading many times, and yet it still won’t appear. I haven’t tried using Console because I’m not sure what the command is, let alone if it would still work

I got all three, Pizza and Hat done seperately. I fucking hated the portal parts before Xen and all the ladders.

In the video @ 5:15 author sais, that Hat and/or Pizza may be left in the lobby, because we'll be returning here.
But in other walkthrough's I don't see any way to return here to pick up them.
Please advise, when we're returning to that lobby?
You'll return to that room after you save some scientints by turning off a surgical unit, right after you fire the laser to make a hole in the wall. These scientists will then unlock a door leading to this room (it's on your right when you first enter this room), and then they will unlock the door on the opposite side of the room, where I placed the items.
When does the achievement activate? I jumped into the portal with the hat and didnt get it.
Do you mean the portal in Lambda core? That's when Rare Specimen should unlock. At least it was like that before the other achievements were added, and since the description didn't change, I'd assume it's the same.
If you mean the last portal to Nihilanth, the other achievements unlock once you defeat him, when you see Gman.

I somehow bugged him behind a wall and he stopped chasing me for a while. Enough to take both items to the missile platform.

NVM. The teleport is in the same map so it is possible to bring one, fall, and bring the other
@@joaofelipenp1 I finally manage to do it by throwing -> sprinting -> repeat and lost of most my armor and hp each time the garantua got back on me.
But now I am a bit further in Forget about freeman and I am stuck with a ladder, cant bring both and the overlap zone between the two map is two small to keep them both. I put one up the ladder go down fetch the second one and when I come back top it has disappear ...
Managed to do it with some hints from other comments. Now on the road to lambda core.

Yeah man it's pretty much impossible without cheats. Not only are you making the ladders of the game twice as hard with twice as much backtracking, but you're softlocked in Interloper since you can only hold one item through the suction vents and there's no going back. Don't do it man.

If you've done Rare Specimen before the Xen update came out, then yes. There were some changes made to the engine and old saves from before the Xen update aren't compatible.
Doing both the pizza and hat at the same time now.. need to run back and forth for both items. So far I managed to get both items to Lambda Core at the same time. But I'm having a problem with the core part with lots of teleporters.
@@Beatfear89 My advice is to stage the hat incrementally up the 2-4-7 puzzle and then come back down to get the pizza to it as well. Use the rotating platforms as well.
@@Victor-xj4cv Hey, I managed to get past the teleporters without cheating!! And I figured out a way to do it easily. For the pizza, it's less likely to roll off the platform so I can just throw it into the teleporter and make sure it land on the platform and then quickly teleport in and grab the pizza.
For the hat, it's tricky because it rolls, but I figured out. You just need to hold it and face the top, then teleport in while holding the hat. You will come out from the other side and then the hat will fall from the air on you for you to grab it, or if you are lucky, you will still be holding to the hat when you come out from the other side.

Honestly I had a way easier time with the pizza cause it was much harder to lose track of (it was large, didnt roll like the ducking hat, heavier so shockwaves didnt move it that much...also you only had to carry it around for 7 chapers) ladders and those damn vents still sucked tho but oh well
P.s the cryogen bottle sucks too but its easier than the hat atleast and only for one albeit looooong chapter. These devs really have a thing for these dumb physics object tortures

You'll have to bring both, each for their own achievement.
Bringing the hat to the end unlock "the Rarest Specimen", and bringing pizza will unlock "Pepperoni Precipitation".
You can't bring both at the same time though, so more playthroughs required.

@@Victor-xj4cv you can definitely "complete" the game with both although you usually have to do some insane propelling of one of the items using explosives and/or yourself at times. Honestly though I've decided that it's barely worth the effort to do both at the same time. Not to mention the shitty physics getting the pizza up some ladders. I've got both to the end of Gonarchs lair and now I'm just gonna run interloper twice.
@@OriginalRAB Yeah, I just got to Gonarch's Lair with both. It's been a slog, but Interloper is so long. I can't do it two more times.
Honestly this is completly awful, the only way something like this works is in games with inventory systems, where you have to give up a slot to carry the item.
