    For anyone wondering I did mine last year with Royal Blood oil and its still going - no leaks, none of the sealing were damaged also

    • @ForestRockets
      @ForestRockets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Its actually better to use Royal Blood. It seperates air bubbles better than shimano oil.

    • @herosstratos
      @herosstratos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have preferred Magura Royal Blood because the brake caliper of the MT5 is a heat-loaded component and is of course designed for this oil. Absolutly great video, btw.

      @Alkhiman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ForestRockets Regardless of what oil you use, you can use the "vacuum" technique, where you have fresh oil inside your syringe, you put your finger on the end of the syringe and pull the end to create a negative pressure inside the syringe. With the oil still in it, you might notice very, very tiny bubbles coming from seemingly nowhere inside the oil to the surface. You're now separating air trapped inside the oil :)

    I did the shigura mods for mt5 with slx levers. Used shimano inserts and olives, also had to modify the contact point screws from the lever because i'm using magura discs which are a little bit thicker. So far these combos are the most powerfull brakes from what i've owned (had zees, codes , elixirs). Sincerly i don't know from where this braking power is comming, because i also changed the pads to magura performance. Anyways this is the cheapest way to solve the issue of lever bending from the Mt5 (50 euros for 2 slx levers).

      It's hose and insert pin and olive is Shimano. So everything is Shimano except for the calipers.

      @@ForestRockets i've ordered a set of mt5's and they're already filled and bled. i'm assuming the mineral oil should be removed from the calipers first prior to installation? would the shimano banjo fittings be compatible to magura mt5?

    • @ForestRockets
      @ForestRockets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you can bleed the whole Shigura System with Magura Royal Blood after Installation. If you already have a complete MT5 Set I would use the Magura Hoses and just Insert a Shimano Pin an Olive to the Lever Side.

      @@ForestRockets while shimano/magura have identical outer diameters, I think using their own inserts to pair with their hose is the best way to avoid leaking at the levers. i've seen some comments on other shigura videos that shimano inserts are made for an inner diameter hose of 2.1mm while inner diameter of a magura hose is 2.3mm. So far how are the brakes running are there any known issues?

    • @ForestRockets

      If you use Magura hose you need to use Magura pin and olive. At least that's what was told to me. And it makes sense, because magura hose has a slightly bigger diameter.

    Hi there! I have the old mt3 Magura calipers paired with my stock Tektro levers (the calipers were given to me). I was wondering if should I match it with the Deore m6100 levers or should I go for the SLX m7100?
    Do correct me if I'm wrong. You used the stock cables from the Magura and changed the end fittings to match the Shimano levers, right? Just making sure because I want to pursue this setup.
    Also, have you tried using Shimano mineral oil?
    TIA!

  • @pepsnex

    I got the MT5s and don't like the sponginess of the levers and plan to switch them out and use my old Shimano MT200 levers. If I already have the Magura hose running internally should I just use that or use the Shimano line feom.my MT200s. I see a lot of people use the Shimano line. What adaptor should I use to connect the Shimano line to the MT5 caliper. Cant find it :( . I found one for a Jagwire line but no Shimano/Magura.

    • @ForestRockets
      @ForestRockets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late answer, hope its not too late or you've already found the answer.
      Anyway, you can use the Magura hose with the MT200. Then you need to use the Magura olive and insertpin too.
      You can also use Shimano hose, but if it is not the one with so called "banjo" end you need some kind of adapters like you've already mentioned. So, I think you should go with the Magura hose thats already installed to your calipers.

      @@pepsnex That's great. MT200 levers are a great choice. It's the servowave levers that suck. If it works, no need to fix it. • @paul20v
      @paul20v 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi late reply but the Magura hose should be used with the magura caliper as Banjos are different sizes,
      You then use the shimano olive , nut and bh59 barb brass one which is 2.3mm NOT the bh90 barb silver one which is 2.1mm The 2.3mm bh59 fit lovely in the magura hose
      The Magura hose is 2.2mm but the end of the magura barb is to long for the shimano levers as less nut gets threaded in the levers
      for a note both shimano and magura hoses have the same external diameter .
      Again sorry for the late reply you have probably sorted it already but thought it was worth a mention for any one else .

    hi, I'm from chile, great job with this mechanic tip, but i got a few question's to do.
    how mineral oil can be use it in both brands, knowing the mineral oil are diferent.
    magura use BLUE royal mineral oil and shimano use mineral oil.
    do you compare both label and study the heating point?
    i ask this beacuse i'm getting started with the same proyect thing that you do.
    i'm so exhausted from use sram brakes, and your video iluminated me to do that.

      Hello, do you have any reference that supports what you are saying? It is not that I distrust, but today it is preferable to have some information as a backup, especially because in terms of brakes, this issue is somewhat delicate.

    • @bikesnblades6737
      @bikesnblades6737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having run a mixture in mine for about two years now.
      Also, it's mineral oil. What could happen? Worst case the seals swell up from some additive, but people have been doing it forever and there haven't been any problems. It's not like Magura or Shimano reinvented the wheel when it comes to their hydraulic fluid. It's a bicycle brake, not a space shuttle 😉

    • @bikesnblades6737
      @bikesnblades6737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As far as the thermal capacity of the oil goes, it can't be that different. Or do you really believe Shimano would use a oil that is vastly inferior to magura, or vice versa? And even if so, it's obviously enough not to massively overheat and therefore good enough for use in another brake. The brakes are also not world's apart in terms of heat management.
      I get being careful, but this is basically sweating over which battery is better suited for your flashlight rather than using gasoline instead of diesel in your diesel engine.
      You could even use baby oil, as showcased by Seth of formerly Seth's bike hacks and now berm peak TH-cam channel.

    Moin, wieder mal ein bild-video..
    Sehr schön!
    Ich hab letztens erst den Umbau mit MT5 und SLX-Hebel gemacht - funktioniert gut.
    Nur hinten kommt die MT5 erst auf den letzten Drücker, evtl muss ich da noch paar Tropfen Öl nachfüllen.
    Für Nachmacher:
    Punkt 1:
    Die alten Bremsen gehören nicht einfach so in den Hausmüll. Die sollten wenn, dann zerlegt und das Öl und Kunststoff separat entsorgt werden.
    Punkt 2:
    Die Magura-Bremsen sind ja leider keine Lieblinge beim Entlüften. Das kann Shimano wesentlich besser.
    Ich musste bei mir 2 - 3 mal entlüften bis die Bremse funktioniert hat. Und so wie es im Video dargestellt ist sollte man es auch nicht machen. Zum einen hat der Proband im Sattel immer noch Luft weil der hintere Bremskolben höher ist und sich ein Luftpolster versteckt. Zum anderen sollten die Bremsbeläge raus genommen werden weil einerseits kein Öl auf die Beläge etc kommen soll und die Kolben zurück gedrückt werden sollen um ein Überfüllten zu vermeiden.
    Nur mal so.. 😉

      Whats the problem with that? Of course I could also just ride the stock XT‘s or the Maguras or Sram or every other sort of Stuff. But it maybe doesn’t fit my prefered likings for brake feel or riding style. I for my own really like the XT Levers but with the Stock Calipers the overall Brake Power is a little bit weak so I fitted the Magura Calipers on there to get more brake power and a early braking point in the lever wich really fits my likings. I mean you could also ride a just like you bought it but you can also get your preferred parts together and build your own isn’t that what individualization is for? To create something what perfectly fits me, this of course doesn’t need to fit somebody else but thats ok because I build it for myself and not for somebody else.
