Ok so this movie kinda rules! It has its problems but it was so much fun and the score, effects, and acting were all amazing! Kirk was such a welcome surprise and seeing that Enterprise crash was beautiful to watch
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

I rewatched this in preparation for your reaction. I've come to the conclusion that this is one of the best looking, best produced, and best executed poorly written movie ever. It is entertaining, it's fun. Killing Kirk and the Enterprise-D were mistakes, and unnecessary. Still, it's a great ride. I never hated it, but I wish they'd done it differently.

Btw, Dr Soran is played by Malcolm McDowell. He voiced Varney in "Castlevania", Minister Hydan in "StarWars Rebels" and he also played Alex in "A Clockwork Orange"...that was in 1971 though.

@@tyranusfan I think this is the most perfect explanation for the way people feel towards this movie.
TNG the series had their finale in May 1994.
This movie came out in November 1994.
Paramount rushed this movie into production way too fast, but they were thinking to strike while TNG was still hot.
The result was this very fun but very poorly written movie.
When I first saw this movie, I loved it. But the plot holes did nag at me.
I went back to the theater and saw it again and loved it again, but was still troubled by the things that didn't make sense and what I also felt was the unnecessary destruction of the Enterprise - D.
When it came out on home video, I bought it, still loved it, still had my gripes.
Then over time it just seemed my gripes about the movie began to annoy me more and more. Then reviewers like Red Letter Media and Nostalgia Critic did their analyses of the film and pointed out a while lot more continuity errors (the Kurlan Naiskos statue being disregarded so carelessly) and stupid decisions the characters shouldn't have made.
That the movie was rushed so caused things like not having time to finish designing the planned new uniforms so they ended up switching back and forth between the TNG series uniforms and the DS9 uniforms. Within the movie, that was just another thing that made Starfleet look stupid.
Then the studio mandate that the Enterprise-D needed to be destroyed because it wasn't cinematic enough...that sucked! I would have loved the Enterprise- D to be the ship they had in the rest of the movies! Maybe refit somewhat like the original Enterprise was in the first movie.
But then I eventually made my peace with the movie...I still enjoy watching it, it's a fun ride, the Enterprise--B part at the beginning is an awesome scene, I get to see Kirk and Picard on screen together. I can let go everything that doesn't make sense because this movie is good enough in other ways. This is the Next Gen/Original Series crossover we got, even if it wasn't exactly what we wanted, I definitely would rather have this than nothing.

I'm not ashamed to say this is one of my favorite movies of the franchise, despite the flaws you mentioned (especially involving Kirk's fate). Also, this is one of my favorite Trek scores, despite Dennis McCarthy's work being often unfairly maligned - probably because he was mostly known as a TV composer.
I have an interesting story about the music: I met McCarthy online many years ago on a film score forum or someplace like that. We exchanged a few messages when I told him that his ethereal choral cue for The Nexus was one of my favorite film score cues of all time. He said that particular piece of music held a very dear place in his heart. McCarthy was feeling very emotional the day that the Nexus music was to be recorded, because his father had just died. He put his heart and soul into conducting that cue, and then he noticed out of the corner of his eye that Patrick Stewart had come into the studio to hear the recording. Sir Patrick had apparently heard of McCarthy's loss, and was so moved by this beautiful, almost spiritual music that he was overwhelmed and began visibly crying. McCarthy said he always treasured that memory and that day, despite his grief - Stewart's empathy was quite a gift to him.

Fun personal fact. This movie was available for rental summer of 1995 but released for purchase on VHS in February 1996. For Christmas 1995, my aunt managed to convince a movie rental place to let her buy a copy so she could give it to me 2 months early as a present. I feel like I remember at least one Star Trek film taking an eternity to come out to own. It might have been this one.
I remember going to blockbuster and the worker there could look up the current price for a movie and tell how far away it was from coming out to buy. One copy would be like $300-400 or something, and would drop down to 20-50 I think when closer to release. He of course could have been just feeding me bullshit but it felt on point for a couple movies that were taking their sweet time to come out to buy. Much longer than the average movie.

The lighting in Generations doesn't get mentioned enough. It's amazing that to cover up the "cheapness" of the standing TV sets, they lit it all really moody and shadowy with amazing sunsets into Ten Forward, all the lighting during the Amagosa Star section. The lighting choices really give Generations a much more Romantic and melancholic feel that's amazing to look at. Same for the lighting in the Stellar Cartography room. The movie definitely has its flaws but I love so, so much about it.

The Star Trek fanfare heard during the christening ceremony of the Enterprise B is the most epic and triumphant version of the melody I have ever heard.
I think it’s a good movie too. I think the Kirk death scene literally destroyed some people though, and they harbor animosity towards the movie as a result.

The thing with Trek movies is what’s been called an “odd number curse.” 2, 4, 6, First Contact, etc are more highly regarded than 1, 3, 5, Generations, etc. Generations is also kind of dissed because of the way they handled Kirk’s demise. One of the jokes at the time was that he should have died on the bridge, not with the bridge on him (yeah, bridge, bridge, see what they did there?). Your eyes didn't deceive you, you do know Soran. It's Alex from Clockwork Orange.
As for Kirk's death... I felt the same when I first saw the movie. I felt it should have been something epic like the Genesis wave, not falling from a bridge.
That said as I rewatched it the death scene grew on me. Maybe I would still have liked something epic better, but it is kind of a beautiful scene anyway. To the world he had been dead already. And now for once he was the hero nobody knows about, no fanfare, no parade or reward... Just doing what's right because it's right, and because he wanted to do it, even if nobody would ever know.
Kirk had been struggling with aging since the first movie. Not being able to pass the torch, not wanting to accept he grew older. Never leaving the spotlight. But finally it felt like he came to terms with his time coming to an end, and instead of dying on a chair in retirement he died doing what he loved.

After a moment some police officers entered and took like 2-3 kids out of the theater. I guess they snuck in or something. They started the movie up again, but man we all were surprised. Like it coulda been a good moment to cliffhanger to the next film maybe, but would have been a disappointing decision to end it at that moment.

In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Kirk says he always knew he'd die alone... here, that's partially true, as Kirk was by himself in the Enterprise B, when the Nexus ribbon hit the ship and killed him. It's also not true, in the sense that Kirk emerges from the Nexus and dies with Picard at his side.
If you are going to react to more Star Trek, would recommend the following double features, which are organized both chronologically & thematically:
Datalore / The Measure of a Man
    Yesterday's Enterprise / The Offspring
    Brothers / I, Borg
    DS9 Pilot: Emissary (1 & 2)
    Time's Arrow 1 & 2
    Relics / Tapestry
    Descent 1 & 2

It's not exactly that Captain Kirk didn't know if he had the power to help at the beginning. It's that he was trying not to undermine the new captain. It was really hard for him because his natural instinct is to take control of a situation. That's why he was half way standing up. That's why Scotty basically told him to sit down. And you said Kirk was reckless. What I always tell people who knew JJ Trek first is that Captain Kirk is a risk taker, but he's not reckless. I don't like JJ's portrayal of Kirk as reckless.

The USS Enterprise was a US navy ship launched in 1799 and lost in 1823, and is probably what the sailing ship (played by the Lady Washington, also seen in Pirates of the Caribbean) in the early scene is intended to portray. Gene Roddenberry had the excellent age-of-sail 'Horatio Hornblower' novels in mind as he created Star Trek (Kirk, like Hornblower, is very young for his rank), so there is a bit of Hornblower homage here.

You may like to know, that after losing Kirk in the maiden voyage, CPT Harriman rededicated his life to living up to Kirk's legacy and became a fantastic and storied captain. I believe they made a few books about him.
He originally got the position because it was a long period of peace and his father was an influential Admiral. He saw captaining a ship as just something to do for fun. But after losing Kirk, he saw that being a captain affects the lives of everyone involved and began to take it VERY seriously.

"Well let me tell you something. Don't! Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do ANYTHING that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference."
"Come back with me. Help me stop Soran. Help make a difference again!"
"Who am I to argue with the captain of the Enterprise? What's the name of that planet? Veridian III?"
    "That's right."
"I take it the odds are against us and the situation is grim?"
    "You could say that."
"You know if Spock were here, he'd say I was an irrational, illogical human being for going on a mission like that. ...Sounds like fun!"
Fun Fact: The horse that William Shatner rides is his, as are the house and farm where the sequence takes place.
Captain's Chair Fact: William Shatner has stated that his line "Who am I to argue with the Captain of the Enterprise?" was the hardest line he ever had to deliver.
Lady Washington Fact: In the holodeck scene, Troi (Marina Sirtis) hands over the sailing ship's helm to an elderly man. In real life, this man is the REAL captain of the sailing ship Lady Washington at the time. The ship itself is owned by Grays Harbor Historical Seaport in Aberdeen, Washington. The same ship also portrayed the Interceptor in Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003).

I see a lot of people have a problem with the fact Picard didn't go back in time earlier when Soran was on the Enterprise. I see it as Picard being a stickler for detail. The farther back in time he goes the more chances he has for changing the timeline too much. Butterfly effect. Going back to Veridian III would cause the least amount of damage. Besides he doesn't want a visit from Temporal Investigations.

Most reactors Ive seen, that have continued on with a franchise, have liked those movies. Now they might have liked the earlier movies in the franchise more, but they didn't outright hate the later movies like many in their comments seem to.

While some films are better than others I don't dislike any of them. The stories they told are consistent with the exceptional storytelling of the TV series. They did new things with the characters, but that's what we want to see rather than just retreading old ground. So, where others may dislike them, I find them all good for what they contribute. Incidentally, Brent Spiner does in fact have at least one album "Ole Yellow Eyes is Back." On one song Worf, Picard, and I forget who else, sing backups on the album! No kidding! William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy also have albums! Kirk died the way he said he would in Star Trek 5. He died "alone" without Spock and McCoy there. His prediction came true. Though he was with Picard, he was not with his left and right arms Spock and McCoy, and therefore his death fit what he said he always knew. Though, as you said, it seemed unfitting that such a hero like Kirk should die in such a way. But how else could it be within the context of the film? McCarthy is an underrated composer. His music gives me the same emotions and excitement as did James Horner's music. Both prominently use French horns for the chills and emotional components and percussion to drive the action. He did so much of the music for the TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager TV series plus this movie. I have long had a crush on Counselor Troi. She was so beautiful in this film and had more to do than just relate empathic information which I love. Any time I can see more Troi I'm a happy man. But as you said everyone delivered great performances. Keep your attention on Data's character developments in the movies. They will add to the impact of what happens with him in the final movie.

A DS9 episode I would recommend would be Trials and Tribble-ations...I can guarantee you will love it! I absolutely love this and the next movie... but not the following two, but I'll watch for your reactions to both.

The TNG episode "Brothers" is worth a revisit as it marks the return of Lore, the android that Data's creater (or Father) preceeded him with. In that episode, Brent Spiner plays all three characters and is pretty amazing, not just his acting, but explaining the backstory. It explains the emotion chip that their creator designed for Data and what happened to it. Later two part episode, Descent explains further but you could give it a miss and not lose out on too much of the back story.
You should consider looking at some select eps from ST: Deep Space 9 and ST: Voyager. In between ST Generations, and the next: First Contact, Worf transferred to DS9 and starred in that series for some time. This will explain his presence in the next movie. Without spoiling it for you, you'll understand it when you see it!

Not only that, you went on and watched entire franchises despite I'm sure people telling you to stop at the second movie or so in some of them. I hate when people tell reactors to not continue a series.
Everyone is different and especially when people have nostalgia for older films and hate newer installments in their franchise, I've found most reactors that have watched further films in those series have generally liked them, even if they didn't like them as much as the first couple installments. I will always say binging a franchise for the first time in a row and waiting decades between them hits the audience differently.

Patrick Stewart has some beautiful lines in this film and I think Shatner was also great. I didn't mind his death as much as others. He went out how he lived helping people. It could've been drawn out more I suppose. His final lines I think we're fitting "It was fun." short and sweet. Shatner said when he says "Oh my..." it's his reaction to what happens when you die. Did Kirk see something? Is there a heaven? I like that thought.

I saw this in the theater, and when Soran knocked Picard off the summit and launched the probe into the star, someone in the audience yelled "If it was Kirk, he would have kicked Soran's ass!" which reminds me of an anecdote William Shatner said Patrick Stewart told him. Patrick Stewart and William Shatner were both in Las Vegas, and Shatner called Stewart and suggested that they should get together. Stewart agreed, and got a cab in front of his hotel and told the driver to take to Shatner's hotel. Turned out that Shatner's hotel was right across the street, so the driver told Stewart "Get out of my cab!" Stewart said "I will NOT!" so the driver got out, grabbed Stewart and pulled him out of the cab. Then he recognized Stewart and said "Hey! You're Captain Picard!" and Stewart said "Why, yes. yes I am." Then the driver said "Wow! Am I lucky. If you had been Kirk, I would have been in trouble!"

The shots of the Enterprise B inside the ribbon or the crash landing sequence are masterfully done and feel distinctly different from any other Star Trek movie. Yes, the script is clunky and doesn’t work for an uninitiated audience (unlike the TOS movies and the upcoming First Contact) but there’s just so much to enjoy thematically. It probably does deserve a lower ranking than most Star Trek movies but I don’t think this is a bad movie by any means.

One of the biggest problems is the fact that the plot completely falls apart the instant you put a moment's worth of thought into it. For example, why all the nonsense about blowing up stars to change the course of the ribbon when he could just beam himself into it from a shuttle? Or just beam himself into space in front of the ribbon seeing as how its course is 100% predictable. Or how about the fact that Picard being able to go back to any place at any time and choosing the most idiotic point in time to go back to? He could have just gone back to when he was talking to Soran in Ten Forward and punched him in the face. Or better yet, he could have gone back a couple of days and saved his family from burning to death. But no, instead he goes back to right before Soran launches the rocket where Picard is at a significant disadvantage which ultimately gets Kirk killed. Sure, the action scenes are well done and all, but the plot is truly braindead.

I liked all of the TNG movies. Generations is a good film. Like most films, it does have some weak spots; but, nevertheless, it is still a very good addition to Trek.
I was going to come up with a diagram for you of essential TNG episodes to watch. I did some heavy thinking about it. And the more I look at it, the more I realize the The Next Generation has story threads that run through a lot of episodes, with some threads crossing other threads. It is a much deeper and connected series than I thought. Even many early episodes have connections with later episodes. Even the first season, which is often considered the worst and least connected, has at least 16 of its 26 episodes that somehow connect with later episodes. To define essential TNG episodes would probably include two-thirds of the episodes, if not more. While it was heavily episodic, it was amazingly connected. A diagram with all the connected episodes would be very difficult, convoluted, and probably not very helpful.

Kirk's original death scene was worse; being shot in the back by Soran after he decloacks the missile. But I get what you're saying. My guess was always that the writers always intended this to be a Next Gen movie, so they intentionally drew some (extra) attention away from Kirk.
But I think it's a good movie, it always moves me watching Kirk's death. Yes, some of the science doesn't work out, like how can that missile hit that sun in mere seconds, while it takes the shockwave near minutes to reach the planet, and how is it immideately visible; light also has to travel, etc.
And a good pun was born here: I think in the beginning they said "Captain on the bridge" when Kirk entered the Ent-B bridge. Movie ended with "Bridge on the Captain"

That assessment of Kirk’s death was my problem as well with the movie. I’ve always believed Kirk needed to die on the bridge of the Enterprise. There is an interesting book sequel written by Shatner titled “The Return,” which surprisingly works for me and it goes into deeper history of the Borg.

Fun Fact: In one of the books, the Duras Sister's hacking Geordi's VISOR made Starfleet order Geordi to get synthetic ocular implants because it was like the 3rd time in TNG people had used the VISOR against him. This is why he has the new eyes in First Contact.

I remember the first time I went to see this at the movies. I was so excited to see Kirk and Picard together on screen for the first time, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. So when Kirk died, I got a lump on my throat and almost cried right there, I mean, Captain Kirk, one of my childhood heroes and there he was dead, getting buried by Picard and the sad music, I started thinking about all the original series episodes and the first movies. The destruction of the Enterprise was epic, much more than in Star Trek III. I didn't like how easily Picard was getting beat up in the fights with Soran when he was shown to be able to hold his own in a good old fashioned fist fight in an episode of TNG. A sort of connection with the Aliens universe, Private Vasquez, Jenette Goldstein as the Enterprise B's science officer. Did anyone else noticed, when Data pushes Dr. Crusher into the water and she passes beside Worf, his knees are bleeding?

The “bleeding” was actually paint on the side of the ship that hadn’t dried yet when they filmed the scene. I guess it happens with tight shooting schedules.

I was just thinking Kirk and Picard's differing command styles both made sense for the eras they lived in.
In Kirk's day, space was a more wild, untamed place, at least for humans. So you needed a bold risk taker.
A century later it'd be much more explored, understood, more relations established, the Federation was the dominant force in their region of the galaxy. They needed a diplomat to help keep it all from coming apart at the seams.
And it fits that the original series was made in the peak Cold War, whereas the TNG era was after the end of the Cold War when America was the lone superpower, but BEFORE 9/11.
And then the Abrams movies reflect the War on Terror. And New Trek shows a lot of intense internal conflict and the open corruption in the system, much like America has been undergoing.
I can safely say the weed has kicked in. I always get chatty and philosophical about Star Trek when I'm lit.

Kirk's death scene in this was actually a reshoot because the first take didn't go over well with test audiences. He was originally shot by Soran and died in Picard's arms. Oh well - I guess there's no good way for Kirk to die.

A little fun fact: Since you have indicated you wished Kirk had survived, there IS a BOOK version written by William Shatner and well known StarTrek authors Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. It's a 3 book series detailing events right before "Star Trek Generations" from Kirk and Spock's pov. It continues after the movie ends as well where Kirk is mysteriously regenerated with nano technology and continues on into Picard's Star Trek world.

I always thought of this movie as the TNG's version of "Star Trek - The Motion Picture". Mostly in that for many years, it was the least favorite of the TNG era movies. Today, that consensus seems to have changed. I've always liked it a lot. But, I've always like "The Motion Picture" since seeing it in the theaters when I was 14 and it's still one of my favorites to this day. My wife and I saw "Generations' in the theater and we both loved it. It's still her favorite TNG movie.
For film production, the team actually pulled out the original 6-foot model of the Enterprise-D built by ILM for "Encounter at Farpoint" which had been pretty much set aside since season 3 of TNG when a 4-foot model was made that had more visible surface detail. The idea for that model was because it was thought that the detailing would look better on the TV screen. In reality, the effects supervisor just didn't like working with that 6-footer. At the time, I noticed the change and thought the new model looked horrible and chunky with all that added visible plating that, in scale, would be plates several feet thick. But maybe that was just me. I could tell that the old model was used in the movie. Even though it was touched up and some small details were added to the surface here and there, it wasn't a lot and looked great on the big screen. It was also the only model of the "D" built to be separated.

Fun fact. They destroyed the Enterprise D for a technical reason. The Enterprise D was designed to fill a 4:3 TV screen. But the studio didn’t like the way the ship looked in widescreen. So they destroyed the ship in this movie so they could design a new sleeker ship for the future films.

This was great start for STNG in movies. The crash scene was INCREDIBLE in the theaters. Was upset with the death of Kirk, killed in a fall, come on! But, it held with cannon. Kirk always said he knew he'd die alone. And none of his friends are there.

Dr Soran is also one of my favourite villians, hamming it up nicely! Very interesting you reacting immediately to Kirk's off screen death on Enterprise B. Almost everyone hated it at a pre screen so they rewrote it and added him helping Picard later!

Because it was directed by a impersonal tv serie episodes director, David Carson that lack of any personal style on visuals or narrative, so it looks more an very expensive special episode than a feature film for a movie theater. The staging is very dull and uninspired.
You can see whatever you wanto about Abrams enntires, but you can find a personal style on them.

  • @tofersiefken

The Enterprise and other federation starships use "Inertial Dampeners" to prevent crew members from being tossed around by the impact of space battles, collisions, or when lurching into warp speed. During the crash landing of the saucer section, these inertial dampeners protected the crew as they impacted the surface, the resistance of thousands of trees, and even smashing through a low mountain peak. It is odd, however, that when the Enterprise saucer section finally came to a halt, crew member bodies were shown sliding out of control toward the front of the ship. Did the inertial dampeners maintain function through the entire crash landing, only to fail during the last second? Or is that just a continuity error that only a Trekkie nerd like myself would ponder?

    • @Daniel-Strain
      @Daniel-Strain ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Technical Manual says that dampeners work pretty perfectly in response to the planned, intentional motion of the ship - because they know what the ship is doing. But when affected by an outside source, there is a lag of some microseconds in countering the forces. This is why the crew can be thrown around a bit (but not as much as they would with NO dampeners). The functionality of the dampeners would probably be in question as the ship was taking so much damage on the ground too.

    • @nathanielreik6617
      @nathanielreik6617 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'd also imagine the dampeners were taking damage throughout the slide. Also after they were hit from the shockwave of the warp core explosion Worf said their primary stabilizers were disabled and they had to switch to the secondary and the inertial dampeners are part of the stabilizers so they were using the secondary inertial dampeners.

    • @redmatter
      @redmatter ปีที่แล้ว

At the very beginning of the crash sequence, the moment things go completely crazy you can hear the computer saying “stabilizers offline engaging secondary systems.” I always felt like they switched to backup inertial dampeners and that’s why things went janky from that point on.

It was placed before the champagne bottle ceremony for the Enterprise B. It's bizarre to me that no version I've seen since has included it.

  • @Trendyflute
    @Trendyflute ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree this movie gets more flak than it deserves! I get some of the complaints about it not integrating with certain TNG episodes but that's not important to me; people are free to dislike Kirk's death and all that but I, like you, thought the integration of the two casts and the whole nexus concept was really clever and well done and while this movie has a few loose ends, it could've had so many more and been such a mess and it's not, it's pretty tight and well done and I think the haters be missing out a bit. I really like First Contact, after that I'm not as much of a fan of the last two TNG movies though after disliking Insurrection for years, my last viewing I thought it was alright!
