dude. this is my first year playing volleyball and your videos and tips are one of the reasons im not completely lagging behind my more experienced teammates. thank u so much for sharing your knowledge!
Actually, I know I’m a year late but, looking closely I think he was moving in the direction the ball wasn’t being blocked, it shows the amount of experience that person had
Everytime I try to read the hitter by looking at their body language and such they always spike at the complete opposite where I think they are gonna hit, and libero is pretty challenging because it seems when a team loses a point the libero is always blamed for.
you have to know the spiker. Observe their matches carefully and you will find patterns. Spiker also watch these videos and know this shit. You need to be extremely observent of their approach like giving extreme extreme focus and I gaurantee at least 70 - 80 percent of time, you will know where the ball is going to go. Just stop thinking and READ him. Read him, no predictions, no overthinking, your complete goal is to read him.
you know what I've just realized? coming from experience, when u watch lots of these volleyball tutorials, you end up over thinking when ur on the court, for example, during practice, I was trying to fix up my timing for hitting after watching a tutorial. then just recently after playing beach volleyball, I've realized that since i didn't over think it so much, i was able to play better. just something that came to mind when I saw the found this vid
Hi Donny! I think it'd be pretty beneficial for your audience for you to do a miniseries about reading the game in general, beyond just hitters and tipping. You'd be catering a bit more toward the advanced crowd, but I think reading the game is one of the most important soft skills of the game. For example, reading what options the setter has based on the pass and what kind of set the hitter is going to receive and what options the hitter has would be included in the video. Just some thoughts if you're looking for another topic to cover. I know I would have appreciated learning about that when I was starting out! Also, solid series dude. Super easy to understand and learn from.
Just wanted to say that I have been watching your videos for a while now, and I wanted to thank you for giving up your time in order to make these amazing videos!
Yo coach Donny you should try using split step. It is really useful to receiving spikes, reading and etc. Make it a tutorial... I saw it in Japan volleyball game
Not sure how a) you're able to remember all of this b) able to verbalize it c) able to give the appropriate visuals where words fail. People have been saying 'watch the approach' for years, but that simple birds eye graphic with radar and arrow locked it in right now.
nice shoes coach! i got those ones too based on your and josh's recommendations. they're even better than the Kobe 8s. been lurking at your videos and find them great. keep up the good work.
Can you do a video on how to spike a ball that's coming off the oponent's side of the court towards my side, right towards the net? It's something that middle blockers do a lot and I play as a middle blocker, but sometimes I don't get much height on my jump because I don' have enough time to back down and do the proper footwork.
When your in the air to block or something...their hitting tip or so. As the result or you can see, how do you quickly stop your body from flowing or make it go down quickly to get the tip or so.
Hi coach! Are you able to make a video about moving the block while the in the air to compensate? Say if you're blocking 1v1 or 1v2 and you open a gap for a straight and as the spiker hits there you shut it down?
Could ya do a newer version because this was 6 years ago, still useful but i want to know if you got new advice to give after the 6 years of more experience
Could you make a video on how to be a deceptive hitter, and getting the ability to hit hard on angles that are outside of your direction of momentum? I currently can hit through my momentum pretty well, but I'm unable to hit in a direction left or right of my momentum. I've tried hitting thumb up or thumb down but all that does is put side spin on the ball and it'll either go into the net or go out of the court. I assume it has to do with changing my rotation on my approach plant, and then hitting in the direction with my head, arm, abs, and wrist snap. Is that where the phrase thumb up or thumb down comes from? I haven't seen any in-depth videos covering this really anywhere, and some hitters I go up against can do it with ease. A "play" I'm thinking of would involve me hitting cross court (in the direction of my momentum) high and hard a few times, even hitting over the block. Then once they seal that off, hitting line straight on with my momentum. Then again, once they adjust to that, then approaching with momentum to hit line and changing to drive a hard cross court. To iterate even further, if I see an open hole in the block I don't know how to hit into it. By the way, this video really helped me with my defense!
Hi coach donny !. I like your video. But there you have anh video training for middle attacker? I am 13 years old yet, here I was given the position of my coach here in the philippines.
You mentioned that the #1 principle is 'being still' and #3 is 'staying in the funnel' -- what was #2? I watched the video 2x and didn't see it listed -- did I miss something? Thanks.
Hello coach donny! I'm not a newbie in volleyball but ever since I have started playing, I haven't had a ball. If you were to ask what kind of volleyball 'ball' should I buy since I can't afford yet either mikasa mva200 or mva300, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance!!
I am a newbie a starter i can do passing to wall 30 back to back but not receive. I just played in a training match a week ago and realized i read the match good but am so slow. When i was a goalkeeper i was jumping without hesitation which make me a unique player and i believe good goalkeeper for the team. Just becausr i think libero felt like a goalkeeper position i tried it. The ball is nearly always coming 1 or half foot reach away from me but i just keep looking at the ball or cant react. Any suggrston bout what to do?
Also how do I deal with screening? Whenever my opponents serve they make it hard to see where the serve is coming from and the ball is only visible when it's too late.
When this happens, I'm usually able to see the serve toss over the heads of the opponents. If its a standing serve, its a little harder but I'm still able to see the toss. Other than that you can see the basic direction of where the ball is going, and from there, the height difference between the ball and the top of the net once served can give you a hint on whether or not the ball is going short or deep. and I just realized that this comment was from three years ago... haha
Why am I so afraid of getting hit hard in the face from a spike..like it's a nightmare of mine 😂🤦♂️ I love when my other teammates are the ones saving spikes and not me
me as a player used to get hit minimum 2 balls in the face in every game in the.People laughed at me and mocked me but i didnt paid attention to them , i only get to learned how not to sit at that same ball for defense. At first i too was scared of getting hit in the face , but by playing more matches and getting more experience now i am able to dig any ball , even it comes straight at my face.My only tip would be "stay alert and play more matches to get more experience" , good luck bud
Yo Coach Donny! I'm doing my second year of volleyball this year but unfortunately as a senior in high school. I want to learn as much so i can be more of an asset to my team as their libero. I've noticed that during serve receive, when i use my platform to pass it usually goes well, but when i try to get the ball on target with an overhead pass, the ball usually goes drops immediately after contact or the ball flys behind me because i shanked the pass. Are there any tips you can give me or ways i can improve passing fast serves with my hands?
I have a question. Please help. I have trouble With defending when the ball comes higher at a high-speed (when defending a serve). How can I fix this? It's annoying cause my team demands a good pass but I can't seem to get the ball the reach my setter. It always ends up going to the three meter line or under my mid attacker.
Idk if you've figured it out by now, but search for "overhand digging" and there will be some vids that cover the skill you're looking for. Coach Donny even made a vid about it too :)

thanks for the video, it definitely helped me at my club tryouts!
Could you please make a video on how to wipe the block?
is it right
that with block, a team can pass ball in 4 time.
it means that
1.block
2.defence
3.set
4.hit
Yes you can because technically if the ball goes back in the court it doesn’t count as a touch
yes
you can because if the ball goes back after the block, either you didn’t touch it or you miss hit it so it counts as the opponents touch
These videos are what I have needed! Being libero can be tricky, but with the help of your videos, I am getting better and better! Subscribed!

Try tossing the ball of the basketball. So you can have better grip on the ball next time.
keep your fingers close together and kind of stiff. work with your setter
