Besides being a true story of Loretta Lynn's life, it's the story of my mother's life as well. My mother's father also worked in the Van Lear coal mines, and I was born just 40 miles away in the same small town my mother was born and raised in. My mother is the youngest of 12 siblings, and the life described in Loretta's song is the story of my mother's life in every detail, just as it was for generations of poor Appalachian families. But they are a proud people who will always survive, regardless of the hardships. I am very proud of my mother being a "Coal Miner's Daughter."

On her ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee (she bought the ranch and the town), she has a replica of the cabin she grew up in for tourists to go through. It even has a replica of the well she mentions in the song. She has the mansion, and a smaller house (that's still a good size house) there.. but has never forgotten her roots. Back in the day, people would go to the ranch and would often see her and her husband outside working the garden and the ranch.

10-04-22 R.I.P. Loretta. She was my secret girlfriend ever since I saw her perform live when the Grand Ol' Opry road show came to Seattle way back in the 60s. Hard to believe such a remarkable music icon is no longer with us. Her presence will be greatly missed.

Butcher hollar is literally 25 mins from where I live and the area I was raised. Visited the home place many times. But the raising she’s talking about was the raising of so many of us in the mountains of Southeastern Ky, my Father, my 2 Grandfather’s, 2 Uncles, older Brother all worked the mines.. But my parents were raised the exact same way, just the way it was, working the garden all day, raising crops, coal mines, washing clothes on an old washboard, good cool well water my grandparents had, it’s was just the way of life here for so many decades, and we didn’t really realize just how poor we were financially, bc we have pride and filled with wealth inside!!!! Very emotional and good reminiscing song for those that understand that way of life

A line in the song goes...." my Daddy worked all night in the Van Lear coal mines." and decades later Loretta would release the grammy winning album "Van Lear Rose" with Jack White, who, as a fan, searched her out for friendship and then wound up working with her on the album.

The queen of country music!!!!! Loretta is 89 now and still writing. The movie is about her life. Sissy Spacek won an oscar for playing Loretta and Sissy did all her own singing too. Loretta's daddy was played by Levon Helm who was a great musician and singer and writer. Check out The Band. Songs like The Night They Drove old Dixie Down, Evangeline, and so many more.

We didn’t have it as bad as this song but I remember the hand me downs, the big garden, and juggling the car if mom had to take us somewhere. Probably the worst year I remember was the year Dad spray painted a tumbleweed for a Christmas tree. I also remember we got two pairs of shoes every year,a pair of work boots for school to keep our feet warm and a pair of P. F. Flyer tennis shoes cuz they were dirt cheap and it was physically not safe to go barefoot. The one time I did I screwed up my foot and wound up in the hospital.

I saw one person react to this and he said, "I guess they didn't have Maytags back then." If her family had a washing machine it wouldn't have done them any good because they had no running water and also they had no electricity. If he had LISTENED he would have heard that. "Mama read the Bible by a coal oil light" People don't usually read by a coal oil light if they have electricity. "I remember well the well where I drew water." People also don't draw water from a well if they have running water. What on earth would they have done with a Maytag???? A couple of prerequisites for running a washing machine are running water and electricity.

I live 20-30 minutes from the house she grew up in. Right at 15 miles. Worked underground in the mines for a while. It's just a different way of life that most people would never even know about if not for music and were very proud to have musicians like Loretta Lynn, Chris Stapleton, Crystal Gail, Dwight Yokum, The Judy's and many others, who can share our stories and culture with the world. I love just off of U.S.23 (Country Music Highway). It's nice to see a reaction where someone actually listens and appreciates a good story about something that is real.

Just seeing this. You're right, this song really keeps you humble. My grandparents grew up in the '20s and '30s with no electricity and no indoor plumbing. Can you imagine going to the outhouse when it's 20 below zero? One of the many hardships. When they got married, they were so thankful just to have a small house with electricity, a bathroom, and a washer/dryer. All luxuries to them! It really gives you a lot of perspective about all our conveniences today.

Loretta didn’t just break barriers in country music, she blew them the f*** up! From women’s rights, to hugging Charlie Pride at the awards show when she was told not to stand next to him because it wouldn’t look good for a white woman to be seen with a black man. When he won that award she whispered in his ear, “Tell them to kiss your black ass, honey”
She was a legend, and her greatest achievements might’ve been outside of the 100’s of hit songs she wrote.
You should listen to Van Lear Rose album that was produced by Jack White. Also, find videos of him talking about her. He loved her like his own mother

Loretta has been well covered in the other comments so I'll just add that she also had talented siblings, both male and female. Probably the more well-known is singer Crystal Gayle. Crystal got a Grammy for "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," hosted TV specials, awarded two CMA Vocalist of the Year awards, etc. As far as the movie singing (and the Sissy Spacek parts in the sountrack are great), Beverly D'Angelo did the singing in her character of Patsy Cline. Loretta's dad was played by Levon Helm, who may be known for the song "The Weight." In the movie during the funeral for Loretta's dad, Levon is actually the singer leading everyone in "Amazing Grace" during that scene. Also on the movie/soundtrack he sings "Blue Moon of Kentucky." What a great movie and depiction of her life, including a young Tommy Lee Jones as "Doo."

I live in Tennessee. They had some deadly flooding in Waverly Tennessee where Loretta Lynn has her Ranch. Her ranch foreman and close friend for many years was one of the victims of the floods. This only happen a few months ago and the whole town is still struggling. They've never said exactly how much damage was done to her Ranch but from all I've read it was pretty bad and she's still grieving over the loss of life. We all are. There's a heartbreaking video on TH-cam of a lady and her son on the top of their house. She went on Facebook live and talks about the flooding and how afraid she is. She shows the flood waters rushing by then it goes off. Their home was washed away. The son survived but she didn't. We had some flooding where I live about 80 miles from Waverly but nothing compared to them. It's been heartbreaking for our whole State.
