I admire her loyalty to Elvis. Mary didn’t give Rivers any of the National Enquirer type scoop that she was digging and hoping for. Good on you Mary for not telling any personal tales out of school that would have certainly been used to defame Elvis’ good name. It’s easy to see why he loved and trusted you.

People don't really realize how much of a true legitimate friend of Elvis Mary Jenkins was.
She did something remarkably rare and Brave. When so many other people back during that time frame that knew Elvis were working with publishing companies to help them write books about Elvis, Mary flat refused to sell her stories for others to write books in her name, because she knew they would twist some of the facts and try to make Elvis look bad.
She literally hung up the phone on and slammed the door shut on people regularly trying to offer her money to talk about Elvis in a book.
They flat-out told her they "didn't want all the positive stories about the man" that she herself considered a true friend, and described almost like a big brother.
They told her matter-of-factly they wanted "the dirt".
She was like "What 'dirt'? I don't have any negative if that's what you're looking for. All I have are stories of a wonderful human being that was much more like a family member, then a boss".
And the thing is Mary could have really used the money she would have made if she had just went with a publisher that would have covered most of the trouble and Publishing.
But it shows us what a true friend she was because she refused.
We saw what happened when other people went after the money and let their stories fall into loose hands where the books made Elvis look bad or gave a tainted View that made things out to be more negative than they really were.
Mary said "find someone else because I'm not one of those people".
So it wasn't easy for her, it took her a bit longer and she had to use some of her own money but she did finally publish her own book.
But her experience shines a spotlight on the reason why so many journalists and publishing companies have a reputation for being Sleazy and slimy.
I know of a couple other people that knew Elvis that said they had the same experience as Mary ...of people knocking on their doors offering them money to "spill dirt on Elvis" and made it clear they "didn't want positive stuff".
Really is pretty damn disgusting when we think about it.
And I'm glad & appreciative for the few people like Mary that told those type of folks to "take a walk".
There are a few that later on regretted they took the money and shared their stories with some of those publishing companies.
But unfortunately it was too late. Damage was done. And false narratives & pictures painted.
    There's a lesson there.
Mary felt strongly that since Elvis wasn't alive to defend himself there had already been enough damage done by thoughtless people and she wasn't going to be part of that.
So she made damn sure that if anything came from her, she was going to give Elvis back his Humanity... because that's the least he deserved.
This soft-spoken sweet lady had the heart of a lion when it came to making sure her friend (Elvis) story was told properly.
We all should only be so fortunate to have a friend like her after we're gone.
Rest In Peace to her & Elvis

Unlike many people around Elvis, who bled that man dry mentally, emotionally & financially, I truly believe he & Mary had a very special kind of relationship. I think Mary absolutely adored & doted on Elvis, & saw past his celebrity status, which Elvis found so very comforting. He wanted to buy her a forever home & a vehicle because that was Elvis’ love language; he showered people with gifts as a show of love, but sadly people took advantage of this. Mary spoke of his final days & how he didn’t want to eat / just wanted to rest, & how on one occasion he looked at her & in a rather serious tone, asked if he could stay with her, & she said ‘you can stay with me any time Elvis, you know that’ - that just breaks my heart. His house was full of ‘people’ but he’d never felt lonelier. Bless Mary, & all she did for Elvis. I suspect she’s no longer with us? I don’t doubt for the remainder of her years on earth she had a guardian Angel in Elvis keeping watch over her; now she’s up there, & he saved her the best seat in the house right beside him, where they’ll sing church songs forever more. X

Today May 21st. 2024 I just picked up a copy of Mary's book she features here with Joan Rivers "Elvis, Memories beyond Graceland Gates" in almost new condition at a antique store for a few bucks as I collect Elvis memorabilia. To my surprise when I got home, the inside forward is signed autographed by "Mary Jenkins, Elvis's cook" and a date in blue ink. I will treasure this forever as I see she really did love Elvis from her interviews I been searching today and never said a negative thing about him ever, even in her book. I was fortunate to get a copy decades ago for maybe only $20. But it's been out of print for years now, so copies are hard to come by. And no publisher wants to pick it up. I've seen people say the only ones they can find are used for like $100 and even $200.
I understand why, but at same time makes me bit sad & angry. Mary would not want people charging those crazy prices for her book. She fought off publishers for years, because of ethics. She wanted nothing to do with them.
      Mary was special.
Frustrating it's not really available for others to easily purchase still. Is a wonderful book.
