My latest TH-cam #video is out and it's about 'HOW TO HAGGLE LIKE A ROCKSTAR!!! If you *dislike* haggling like me, you'll love this video. It shows you all the tips I use so that I'm nailing my bargains on the second or third tries. ... Because your vacation doesn't start until AFTER you've survived it! xo- Christine #traveltips #youtube #Travelvideos #travel
Love them all but especially #10... One that I have often felt escapes a lot of Americans, who seem more concerned with being able to say they got a steal, than whether or not the merchant is being kept in the poor house. Perspective, empathy and understanding is an invaluable character trait. Not most I would say, but its enough that I have noticed it.
You can spot them in the wild in the Caribbean. lol I don't travel abroad, but enough across the US to have experienced it. Like I said, not most, but enough to leave an impression on me. Im def an over-tipper, I worked as a bartender in the summers thru college, and since, I've enjoyed tipping well. Good Karma I can hope, personal social satisfaction for sure. But I def don't feel it's an obligation. Bad service is bad service.
Well said. This is why I don't haggle too much. Now it's a matter of do I really want it. If I do, then i usually stick to the price they ask for. Learned the hard way Mexico is expensive. So next cruise, I'm willing to walk away.
Always make a facial expression or act like the item is super expensive when they first tell you the price. Usually it leads to an instant price drop. Also saying you will tell other travellers about their shop or a friend is also looking for the same thing and if you give a deal I'll recommend (this friend is usually imaginary).
Smart girl!! Look like the market it is in Thailand..like you said Friendlyness is the open way for good deal. Start to talk about life , weather or whatever just to open the connection to them. That will work anyway!!
Yes! That's the whole thing: Value. I, too, walk into a place and see something "I like and immediately think, I'd pay ______ for that" because that's what it's worth to me and how it fits in to my life and budget. And scarves -- probably 30 or 40, plus three keffiyehs (Amman, Muscat, and Harrar) that I wear the living hell out of. Love this video!
Thanks so much for these tips Christine! I like the idea of the change purse vs. The cash. Haggling is sooo stressful. I also never realized I could haggle the cost of something as small as scarves. Awesome info :)
I've mostly traveled in countries that speak romantic languages. So I approach with tourists speaking their milk languages and then I speak to the vender in Castilian or Portuguese or Italian. I've actually had venders south of the U.S. Border drop the original price of $60 down to $2 for me. (I 'rounded' up and gave him $10.). But venders in a foreign country appreciate any effort to learn the language, and that appreciation only increases with your fluency. Just be careful in countries where haggling is considered insulting (like Spain and the non-traditionally touristy parts of Portugal and such.) ps: I really admire your courage and adventurousness. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!
I've used lots of these without realising they were strategies - especially the coin bag, walking away and telling them I've seen it cheaper elsewhere!
That video. Was verrryyy helpful, thank you! I hate hate hate haggling, despite of the fact that haggling is common in my own country))) but in some countries you just have to, as locals put up prices inadequately high. Thanks for teaching me a few new tips)
Great video! Already kind of been mentioned but it's worth learning a few key shopping phrases and maybe 1-10... there's loads of help online. For example I know "Too expensive" and "Discount?" as well as numbers in Thai haha. Not hard work and will make haggling less tense and help you connect a bit with the seller if you can even say a little something no matter how awkward it is
Going to Thailand for the first time next month, which lead me to this video.. I'm absolutely terrible at haggling and I think that is what I look forward to the least on my upcoming trip.. I think I would need to bring someone with me to do the haggling for me because I am honestly too nice to do it myself, haha.
hell yes i love it in australia with so many different cultures it is normal and good fun .........how old are you 27 i think and have you don modeling ......you go girl
If feel the same way about haggling -stressful so I avoid it at all cost...LoL Or better yet, I take my mom with me who seems to be cut throat about haggling. Keeping these tips in mind...
I was taking a vacation in Hawaii and came across some vendors selling wooden-carved knives and other sculptures. I figured it would make a nice souvenir. He said the price was $50, but for me he would make it $40. At this point I legitimately became uninterested and told him I would talk a walk and think on it. He immediately went down to $30. I took the deal. I'm guessing the actual price was around $20 or less, but it was good to get some kind of "discount".
There are certainly some market people who are charging far more than reasonable prices, yes you do need to gain some knowledge of the ranges or prices on offer. HOWEVER very often you are dealing with people who are in fact suffering a lot of hardship in their lives just to get by. Do you really need to haggle so brutally with people who are so much worse off than you? Sure, don't be taken advantage of, but don't be brutal either, especially if you can easily afford a few dollars more. Hey, why not give a 'tip' here and there! Everybody walks away feeling better about each other! This applies not only to market people overseas but at you home country as well! Brutal hagglers have a cold black piece of coal for a heart IMO.
If Christine Kaaloa, a.ka. GRRRL TRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa , had been my teacher in high school, I would have made straight A's. She's about the only person who can inform me with useful information and make me laugh at the same time. She's sort of like NPR's Car Guys of travel, Anthony Bourdain, and Sanborn's all wrapped up in one pretty, effeminate package. I also am evolving a theory that there are actually multiple Christine Kaaloa's spread across the globe in a kind of network because, judging from her videos, she's everywhere at the same time. And one person can't be in more than one place, can she? She's everywhere, I tell you!

Great tips! Wish I knew that part about the facial expression-- might have saved me time. ;)

AutisticTravelGoddess SNH You can haggle basically everything.. even accommodations, in some places.

@Ed Agent : Many people feel the same way.
