If you get tired of continually travelling you can always stretch the budget by staying put in one place that you like and absorbing the culture. I travelled around South east asia, India, Pacific, and lots of trips to Indonesia over past 35 years. Did that as annual vacations ,mostly for surfing. Last 5 years we retired and moved to Bengkulu, Sumatra at age 48. Well off the beaten tourist paths..we see like a handfull of foreign travellers a year. Been a blast. rent cost $2000 a year for a decent house, bought a used honda scooter for $600..still running well.not luxurious, but comfortable. We still have to travel outside of Indonesia every 2 months. We generally go to Batam, catch ferry to Johor Bahru or Singapore. Good thing about staying put is you get to make good local friends and really understand how things tick, and get to feel like part of the community, get invited to weddings ( and funerals), parties. It's a slower pace here and a quick 5 minute trip to the shops to get daily groceries like bread and milk can take an hour chatting to people in the neighbourhood..every day is an adventure and simple tasks like getting the internet turned on, or posting a letter can be a challenge when using a second language. Also through repetition we get to know people and make friends, in all different places and countries. Been a good life, but all good things come to an end though, and we now planning on moving back to Australia, but going to try living in a houseboat for something different, maybe start a charter company...see what the next phase of life brings. I'm 53 ...I'll pass on a secret.... invest in real estate, rent that out, and use that as an income :) When I was young I spent all money on traveling, I didn't settle down till my mid 30's.Wish someone had told me to invest in property a lot earlier then I would have been able to do this a lot earlier. happy travels. Remember it's a long life meant to be lived to the fullest. Your going to wake up one day and decide, I've got that travel bug out of my system, and now I will setlle dow in suburbia until i die..not going to happen. If that means reducing the travel for patch of years to pay a mortgage faster..then so be it. trick is to find ways to keep the dream alive. love this channel.

Hand gestures: Please keep them! It's universal language while traveling. Plus, it's a great part of your bubbly personality. :)

    Couldn't agree more.
    1) Flights
    2) Accomodation
    3) Transportation
These are the big-ones. I looove making my budget stretch. Why? That means more travel, more views, more fun!
    Good tips!

I like the hand gestures, being animated helps keep the video lively. It also helps show your individuality and enthusiasm for the topic.

Yes, walking is definitely a good way to do sightseeing. I recently went to Bangkok and it was nice to see and walk the streets of Bangkok. You get to lots of different things especially since I'm from Singapore.

Fantastic tips Christine! You really nailed them. I loved taking the overnight trains in Southeast Asia, but also did it for the exact reasons you mentioned. When I went traveling for six months I found myself doing a mixture. I did a good amount of couch surfing, but I totally understand how people may be wary of it. I ended up leaving one host soon after meeting them because things didn't feel quite right. Trust your gut! Thanks for the good laugh at #1 ^^

What happened when you left that one cs host place? Did you go straight to a hostel or did you have a backup?

    • @PatMaxAdventures
      @PatMaxAdventures 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It was on Langkawi in Malaysia. I ended up getting a room at guest house in the main beach area for the remainder of my stay. That was my back up lol. Though I'm glad I made the choice to leave. Only sketchy experience I'v had CS.

I've recently gotten into the credit card points game. Of course, I encourage responsible spending when it comes to credit cards. If I have a big purchase coming up (such as a new phone or computer), I'll apply for a new credit card and get the sign up bonus. I also monitor my credit score/report and my budget (I use the mint app) diligently. I'm leaving in 11 days for a 2 week trip to Italy, i used my credit card points for the plane tix, card benefits (travel credit) for my eurorail pass and paid for cheap monastery stays.

We will be slow traveling the world in about a year. Our house is up for sale as I type this. I'm so happy I found your channel. Trying to learn all the tips and tricks. Haven't raveled oversease since 1998 so a lot has changed. I like walking too because you really get to see stuff versus flying by in a car, train, etc... I like meeting people too :) Great video! :) Melody

Great video, as always! I am leaving for Indonesia/Malaysia/Japan next month, total cost including flights $2200. Being willing to stay in guesthouses or try something new, using public buses, etc are key! Keep up the good videos, Christine!

Graysdir oh ok. I was able to get tix from LA to Rome to Madrid back to LA for $480 so I just thought that seemed high. But I guess it depends on where your departure location is. If that's a good deal for you, then good job! :)

Airlines and hotel packages is what makes it so expensive to travel. Even going to the travel agent or online for better deals, they will come up with the same package only to sell the most expensive stuff. I always wish money grow on tree and travel around the world unlimited.

You were not afraid of glosts in hotels where you slept? I was haunt at a hotel in Las Vegas although I travelled with my husband. Never went any where alone. The worst was sometime didn't know direction miss ways and extremely exhausted then, who would assist you.

I'm realizing the transportation in Thailand is expensive in rural places. Private car from Surat Thani to Khao Sok is about $60. I can fly from Phuket to Bangkok for $21...it's nuts! But it seems its a necessary expensive because of my schedule.

It's really hard traveling to me because Dollar currency is shit in my country, compared an american or a European i earn very little and have the same priorities as these peoples. I wish i would live in a country where my savings mean i can go to travel this year. Siigh

Maybe you can do couch surfing as she mentioned which is staying by someone for free. A couple people I know from the net stayed at my place. And I know others who did like one girl stayed in France for two weeks in the countryside by someone and she does not even speak French. Accommodation is what eats up most of your money. Food you can always eat less or cheaper.

+Rabia Y. I guarantee there will be a country with an even lesser economy than yours. With a small budget i reshift to what i can afford... if i want to travel. See my travel more video and the last option.
If you only want to go to eu or us, then well...

Communicate in short simple sentences or questions. Stop babbling to drivers etc. simple and clear. Start again if it did not work. From Japan to costa rica. Simple guest houses often don’t speak a lot of English. “i was jus wondering....” is blabbering
