How To Reuse Expensive Pool Pump Unions

  • From www.swimmingpo... - In this video we are choosing to save $150 for new unions for a Pentair SuperFlo pump. Even though I only need one, and even though they are $29 for a new pair of unions in the USA, in Canada I am looking at $150 to replace the union connection. So in this case, I will be heating and stripping the solvent welded PVC connection on the Pentair union There are tools made to ream inside fittings, but this is an old school method with a high degree of success for a skilled hand. This solvent welded connection was made using primer also, so it is a sound welded connection, but it can still be undone with heat and some mechanical force. It is important to not melt, distort or burn the PVC fitting that you intend to reuse. Just heat it enough to weaken the welded connection and make the PVC slightly malleable.

I do this same thing your example is spot on. I've found that it helps to go past your heat target a little and let it cool back the proper softness. It's a fine line. I also replace filter riser pipes this way.

I wish I had the patience for this. Here I am installing a new Jandy valve with new unions.
Also it’s insane how much these go for in Canada. They’re really cheap in the us

Thanks for the info on salvaging unions. I will likely do the same s I can reuse a chlorinator and, perhaps, other components in my currently too compact piping setup.

try this method instead, get a holesaw that fits just about inside the pipe piece, heat it up with a torch for about couple minutes, then just get a vice grip and stick that heated holesaw into the pipe and hold it there for 2-3 minutes, you'll see the heat actually softens the pipe that's glued inside the fitting, and you would be able to pry it out like you did in your video, but this method avoids heating up the fitting and also the hole saw will heat it up more evenly, making it easier to take it out.

Same method I use. When you're in the field, it's a real time saver.

use 2 part putty to smooth out the edge of the fitting and it help stop cavitation.

A rough edge is very unlikely to cause cavitation - it could cause minimal friction or turbulent flow. It’s an insignificant effect considering there are already many such minor restrictions in a typical system.

Gonna replumb everything since I am adding a heat pump. So have Pentair unions on VS pump and filter. Would you take the tine to refurbish the unions as you did here, or just cut my 1.5" pipe and use couplers?
Same for Jandy CPVC housing salt cell? Should I try to unglue it, or just use couplings on the 1.5" pipe.

Don't try to unglued them. That's more of a last resort

Random question... I really like the metal bracket system you have on your wall for securing the pipework. Any idea what the correct term is for that sort of mounting?

U Channel or uni-strut is what to look for.

Why is the price so ridiculous in Canada? And are swimming pools popular to own in Canada?

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve

I have no idea. Our prices are definitely much higher in general for pool equipment that in the US but these in particular were ridiculous everywhere I found them in stock.

Even in the U.S. high heat unions are several times more expensive than standard ones. High pressure grace and larger diameter unions also cost considerably more. I suspect they all cost more in Canada because of higher shipping costs, import tariffs and currency exchange rates
