So how are yall figuring this out for other patterns? For example one mins she’s decreasing twice but then the next for example when she shows the body she only doubled up the number of single crochet but then the decrease is still one? I know a lot of you think I sound stupid but I think this is explained for more able bodied ppl and those who have learning disabilities or austic adhd … this left so many unanswered questions so if you can explain that would be helpful ❤️❤️ oh and I’m not saying she did this on purpose just think a lot of ppl make videos like this just forgetting to add extra detail just in case

This video was useful for showing me how to lay out my pattern and know how to increase it and decrease the amount of stitches. The math and how to calculate the changes of increases/decreases however.... I could not follow. Thankfully found another video that helped with that, but I appreciate this video for setting the groundwork for me.

I have been wanting to do this like forever! I don’t particularly like making tiny or small projects. I like mine 10-12 inches, but most patterns are too small for my liking. I'm the same way!! I tend to only use worsted weight yarn and a because it's cheapest but the projects are often only big with chunky yarn so I caved an just started making my own big worsted weight amigurumi 14-18ish inches🤧 while this comment is a year old i definitely recommend this nice dinosaur pattern that's made to be big with worsted weight yarn, it's the Timothy the dino one❤

I wish I would have found your channel and this video sooner! I have been crocheting for about 5-6 years now. I have never made my own pattern from scratch as most of my projects I was able to find a pattern for for free or for purchase online. That was until I wanted to make a large fish prop for a costume for my husband. I couldn't find anything that fit what I wanted to make so I found a simple pattern that I tried to upscale. It took forever with guesstimating the math, making the mock up, frogging that and then making the final project with all of the details. There were a couple of years between the mock up and finishing the final fish but it did finally get done this year! This video would have made the upscaling so much easier or any of the previous videos in this series about making my own pattern would have been such a big help. I'm glad I have these resources now and look forward to seeing more of your content.

@@bluetenpollen Looking over your sample pattern, I think I see where you may have been having trouble. My sticking points were rows 3 and 6. In the video, she talks about doubling the lines. Though it is sort of shown in the video, it's not directly stated that she is doubling the contents of the line. If there are repeating instructions, you double what is inside the parentheses, but not the number of times you repeat the instruction. I also thought about what she said about continuous growth vs sculpting. Not knowing what your final project is (if I had to guess, this particular part may be a leg or muzzle but I don't know of course) it could go either way so I did a mock up of the original and what I tested. Doing a more stark change and then doing single crochets around in the next row to "fill the gaps" seemed to mimic the original shape best so here is what I came up with. R1. MR 6sc (6) R2. 6 inc (12) R3. 6x (sc, inc) (18) R4. 6x (2sc, inc) (24) R5. 24 sc R6. 3x (6sc, 2inc) (30) R7.-R11. 30 sc (5 rows of 30) R12. 3x (8sc, 2inc) (36) A lot of experimenting in crochet is about trying something, undoing/frogging it, doing it again, frogging again. Over and over until you get what you're looking for. I couldn't tell on paper whether to do a gradual increase or the stark increase until I put hook to yarn for mock ups.The other thought I had regarding continuous growth was that you had an increase of 3 stitches from row 2-3 so to get an increase of 6 you could do something like 3x (7sc, inc) (27) for R5 and 3x (8sc, inc) (30) for R6. Same concept for rows 11 and 12. This is still an increase of 6 stitches but it's over the course of 2 rows instead of 1 like how I have it above. I encourage you to try both and see which you like more and/or which better fits your project. I hope this helps. Happy crocheting! But, I am slowly getting the hang of it. I had bought a few of your *amazing* patterns a short while ago. I have trouble using smaller hooks (def not bc of age or anything like that, they just hurt/cramp my hands, lol!), so making cool GIANT amigurumi is on the top of my list :) Thank you for showing us how to do this xx .....and the other way to make things bigger is the way that I told you about how to triple any yarn - I love this method too but it isn't as exact as your calculations - much, much better ;)

I found this through the crochet patterns subreddit and this is insane, I was so desperate I tried designing my own pattern at his point. I do agree with it still being the original creator's content, so it would be correct to credit the original creator and then just tag your channel saying people used this video to make the design bigger. I think that's what I'd do? I don't know if it's wrong though ;-;

This is so cool and so helpful!! I tried using this method today but I picked a weird one to start with - a spider (and by Skein Spider no less ;) ). It was going well at first, but I'm having a few hiccups and I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing, so I'm going to try with an easier pattern like a bear and see if that works better. Its a great blue print to enlarge them if the pattern has some special rows its best to just follow the video and once you start making it itll be easy to adjust the special rows if that makes sense but great blue print :)
This video is quite confusing, am I just supposed to double everything I do for example 13 rounds to 26 and 2sc inc to 4sc 2inc and am I supposed to have so the dec decreases every time I use it like in the video at 13:38

But I think the beginning/magic loop (R1 and R2) are really throwing me off.
It seems you made the error she mentioned at 3:39 which won't make a smooth transition. rather than filling up the missing rows with repeated amount of stitches [12 -> *X* -> 24 = 12 -> *12* -> 24], you calculate the transition based on the amount of increments your pattern grows. Your pattern grows in increments of 6 for the most part, meaning every row where the stitch amount increases, it does so by 6 stitches added as increases (6 -> (+6) 12 -> (+6) 18 and so on. so the bigger pattern would go [12 -> *X* -> 24 = 12 -> *18* -> 24] instead! your pattern would look something like this, assuming that the order between single crochets and increases switch so they offset each other to avoid the hexagon shape, we alternate their order accordingly on the new pattern R1. 6 magic ring R2. 6[inc] (12) R3. 6[sc, inc] (18) R4. 6[inc, 2sc] (24) R5. 6[3sc, inc] (30) R6. 6[inc, 4sc] (36) R7. 6[5sc, inc] (42) R8. 6[inc, 6sc] (48)* R9. 4[10sc, inc] (52) R10. 4[inc, 12sc] (56) *here you can see that we get an increment of 4 between rows 4-5 of the original so on the bigger pattern we get 8 increases, going from 48st to 56st, for a smooth transition we divide this amount in half, adding 4 increases on the missing row nine (making it 52 stitches) and the other four on row 10, achieving our 56 stitches by the end of row 10.

Hi, I have just startet at a cat, just filling the palm of my hand. A bit to tiny for my tast. In a facebook site I got the advices thats the normal, change /doble the yarn and upsize needle. But this will be another cat! I have to yarns working with, a thin cotton and a thinner silk fluffy added yarn. To double this will not be nice and just clutter. Though about it for a while and work out this way to do the pattern, and that magic rings can't double, thats a big hole to tighten. So doing this you have to use your mind as well. . And I wonder all the way, will this work? ? And now I have proof that the cat will be at a size I like, I will give the facebook site this advice too! And of course the pattern maker will have the credit! (I just change the numbers, I did not make the pattern. )🤩🐈⬛

In theory, yes. But be careful, a lot of the detail will become pretty shapeless when blown up that much (like a low-res image can't be printed super big). Biggest I've done is x3!
I've really flung myself into the deep end lmao the first thing I'm trying to supersize is the day 12 rainbow snake from the 12 Days of Crochet, which i feel i should note i have not even made in the small version, and it's a crawl just writing out the new pattern! i shan't give up!!

I agree with you. Just because you make the pattern bigger/smaller doesn't mean you created how the amigurmi looks or the different characteristics of it. Maybe you added or took away rows but that doesn't change the fact that it's still the same pattern

I'm sorry if someone already asked this but with this method should I expect to quadruple the yarn needed? From a math pov if every row gets twice as long and you double the rows that would require four times the yarn. From your experience does that sound right? And thank you again for the video!
Okay but like. I have dyscalculia, math is incredibly hard and mostly incomprehensible to me (I cannot do anything more complicated than single digits in my head, I have to do it on my fingers or paper or just use a calculator). There are other things I suck at (readin music, for example or spacial awareness). But math for me is like. The epitome of everything hard and complicated. And you made a video where math is actually *understandable* for me. Like I JUST USED IT!!! I MADE SOMETHING BIGGER! its not a complicated pattern, just some increases and decreases to create basically a very smooth dumpling but like. I did it!!! And I didnt cry like I usually do with math and it was really easy!!!! The way you illustrated stuff as well as talk about it is amazing (and the choice of a pattern to work with in the video is also good, because it has both simple shapes and smth more complicated and it really shows how to do this properly). I dont like bulky yarn for amigurumis and this is just. So cool

I just wanted to say that this video has been so helpful! I bought a pattern for a dog loaf amigurumi. It was smaller than I wanted, so I thought I would double the size. I followed this video which was extremely helpful! I noticed on my pattern that there were some things that shouldn't be doubled (i.e., you're essentially making a square in the round, so you wouldn't double 4 to 8 in terms of repeating the "working up" of the square, otherwise you'd get an octagon). Anyway, lots of trial and error, but this video is amazing. Thank you so much!
I tried calculating this on a turtle pattern I found online, and it worked pretty well for the arms, but something went wrong with the head (there was supposed to be 6 rows of sc, but only came out to 5) because when I doubled the rows, it was rows 10-14 that were supposed to be sc, but it didn't add up to six, which was wierd.

Some details need to be replaced instead of just enlarged. You could try swapping them with something like a TrTr cluster stitch, or make little cones and sew them on after.
@@ComplicatedKnots Thank you so much for the advice. I went with the trtr cluster, because I really liked how the horns were integrated in the head in the original pattern. The cluster ended up bulging a little on the side, so I replaced the first and last trtr in the 5 cluster with a tr and I stitched it into the previous round to spread it out a bit. I'm quite pleased with how the hrad turned out. However the body now looks rotated compared to the head, so I might have to gover my math again there 😅
im actually trying to size up one of your patterns the loch ness monster one by 4 times and im making in out of chunky yarn so trying to make it very large in still struggling with this video im not the best at math any other tips to make sense of why you do the second row on the leg and the fourth on the body
Do i only multiply my numbers by 2 when they are not inside a bracket? for example i am trying to enlarge your pattern for the pumpkin cat and for round 4 with the ears (round 2 on original pattern) i have 4 [sc,inc] to make a round total of 16. so hopefully make my question clearer do i only multiply when my numbers are outside of the bracket (for example the 4) and leave the ones inside the brackets the same? For a second example my round 14 (original 7) I have 12 [sc,3scin1,sc] to make a round total of 60. am i doing this correct?
i know this is a very late reply and idk if this will make sense but the pattern i’m doing has a line of 6(7sc, dec) 2sc [50]how my math ended up was 12(7sc, dec) 4sc [100]so i think it’s just the outside numbers. i also just drew tally marks and would cross out tallys that would just be single crochets and circled the 2 lines that would be decreases. basically since my pattern has like 100 stitches in a row now i didn’t want to draw the circles for the stitches but just tallys.
So if you started the magic ring at 12 would you be tripling the size of the pattern? I'm very new to all of this and lost. Thank you. I love your creations btw!❤

I have been wanting to do this like forever! I don’t particularly like making tiny or small projects. I like mine 10-12 inches, but most patterns are too small for my liking. I'm the same way!! I tend to only use worsted weight yarn and a because it's cheapest but the projects are often only big with chunky yarn so I caved an just started making my own big worsted weight amigurumi 14-18ish inches🤧 while this comment is a year old i definitely recommend this nice dinosaur pattern that's made to be big with worsted weight yarn, it's the Timothy the dino one❤

I wish I would have found your channel and this video sooner! I have been crocheting for about 5-6 years now. I have never made my own pattern from scratch as most of my projects I was able to find a pattern for for free or for purchase online. That was until I wanted to make a large fish prop for a costume for my husband. I couldn't find anything that fit what I wanted to make so I found a simple pattern that I tried to upscale. It took forever with guesstimating the math, making the mock up, frogging that and then making the final project with all of the details. There were a couple of years between the mock up and finishing the final fish but it did finally get done this year! This video would have made the upscaling so much easier or any of the previous videos in this series about making my own pattern would have been such a big help. I'm glad I have these resources now and look forward to seeing more of your content.

@@bluetenpollen Looking over your sample pattern, I think I see where you may have been having trouble. My sticking points were rows 3 and 6. In the video, she talks about doubling the lines. Though it is sort of shown in the video, it's not directly stated that she is doubling the contents of the line. If there are repeating instructions, you double what is inside the parentheses, but not the number of times you repeat the instruction. I also thought about what she said about continuous growth vs sculpting. Not knowing what your final project is (if I had to guess, this particular part may be a leg or muzzle but I don't know of course) it could go either way so I did a mock up of the original and what I tested. Doing a more stark change and then doing single crochets around in the next row to "fill the gaps" seemed to mimic the original shape best so here is what I came up with.
R1. MR 6sc (6)
R2. 6 inc (12)
R3. 6x (sc, inc) (18)
R4. 6x (2sc, inc) (24)
R5. 24 sc
R6. 3x (6sc, 2inc) (30)
R7.-R11. 30 sc (5 rows of 30)
R12. 3x (8sc, 2inc) (36)
A lot of experimenting in crochet is about trying something, undoing/frogging it, doing it again, frogging again. Over and over until you get what you're looking for. I couldn't tell on paper whether to do a gradual increase or the stark increase until I put hook to yarn for mock ups.The other thought I had regarding continuous growth was that you had an increase of 3 stitches from row 2-3 so to get an increase of 6 you could do something like 3x (7sc, inc) (27) for R5 and 3x (8sc, inc) (30) for R6. Same concept for rows 11 and 12. This is still an increase of 6 stitches but it's over the course of 2 rows instead of 1 like how I have it above. I encourage you to try both and see which you like more and/or which better fits your project. I hope this helps. Happy crocheting!

I am *SUPER* thrilled to have found you!!! I have only been crocheting for a few years. I am a highly visual learner (thank you for TH-cam), so reading patterns is difficult for me. But, I am slowly getting the hang of it. I had bought a few of your *amazing* patterns a short while ago. I have trouble using smaller hooks (def not bc of age or anything like that, they just hurt/cramp my hands, lol!), so making cool GIANT amigurumi is on the top of my list :) Thank you for showing us how to do this xx .....and the other way to make things bigger is the way that I told you about how to triple any yarn - I love this method too but it isn't as exact as your calculations - much, much better ;)

I found this through the crochet patterns subreddit and this is insane, I was so desperate I tried designing my own pattern at his point. I do agree with it still being the original creator's content, so it would be correct to credit the original creator and then just tag your channel saying people used this video to make the design bigger. I think that's what I'd do? I don't know if it's wrong though ;-;

Nope, you double your base chain! Be careful not to double your turning chain (as in "chain 1 and turn") or it'll throw your row off.
Its a great blue print to enlarge them if the pattern has some special rows its best to just follow the video and once you start making it itll be easy to adjust the special rows if that makes sense but great blue print :)

It seems like you're doubling each row and then doing it twice? But I think the beginning/magic loop (R1 and R2) are really throwing me off.
It seems you made the error she mentioned at 3:39 which won't make a smooth transition. rather than filling up the missing rows with repeated amount of stitches [12 -> *X* -> 24 = 12 -> *12* -> 24], you calculate the transition based on the amount of increments your pattern grows. Your pattern grows in increments of 6 for the most part, meaning every row where the stitch amount increases, it does so by 6 stitches added as increases (6 -> (+6) 12 -> (+6) 18 and so on. so the bigger pattern would go [12 -> *X* -> 24 = 12 -> *18* -> 24] instead!
your pattern would look something like this, assuming that the order between single crochets and increases switch so they offset each other to avoid the hexagon shape, we alternate their order accordingly on the new pattern
R1. 6 magic ring
R2. 6[inc] (12)
R3. 6[sc, inc] (18)
R4. 6[inc, 2sc] (24)
R5. 6[3sc, inc] (30)
R6. 6[inc, 4sc] (36)
R7. 6[5sc, inc] (42)

R9. 4[10sc, inc] (52)
R10. 4[inc, 12sc] (56)
*here you can see that we get an increment of 4 between rows 4-5 of the original so on the bigger pattern we get 8 increases, going from 48st to 56st, for a smooth transition we divide this amount in half, adding 4 increases on the missing row nine (making it 52 stitches) and the other four on row 10, achieving our 56 stitches by the end of row 10.

Hi, I have just startet at a cat, just filling the palm of my hand. A bit to tiny for my tast. In a facebook site I got the advices thats the normal, change /doble the yarn and upsize needle. But this will be another cat! I have to yarns working with, a thin cotton and a thinner silk fluffy added yarn. To double this will not be nice and just clutter. Though about it for a while and work out this way to do the pattern, and that magic rings can't double, thats a big hole to tighten. So doing this you have to use your mind as well. . And I wonder all the way, will this work? ? And now I have proof that the cat will be at a size I like, I will give the facebook site this advice too! And of course the pattern maker will have the credit! (I just change the numbers, I did not make the pattern. )🤩🐈⬛

In theory, yes. But be careful, a lot of the detail will become pretty shapeless when blown up that much (like a low-res image can't be printed super big). Biggest I've done is x3!
I've really flung myself into the deep end lmao the first thing I'm trying to supersize is the day 12 rainbow snake from the 12 Days of Crochet, which i feel i should note i have not even made in the small version, and it's a crawl just writing out the new pattern! i shan't give up!!

I agree with you. Just because you make the pattern bigger/smaller doesn't mean you created how the amigurmi looks or the different characteristics of it. Maybe you added or took away rows but that doesn't change the fact that it's still the same pattern
I love this, I have a Baphomet pattern that a friend of mine would love but I don’t think he would want it standard size so this will help me make it the size I think he’d like. I’m not sure now whether to double or treble the size 😊

How would you make something just a little bit bigger? Would you just guess at a smaller decimal to multiply everything by? Any tips?

I'm sorry if someone already asked this but with this method should I expect to quadruple the yarn needed? From a math pov if every row gets twice as long and you double the rows that would require four times the yarn. From your experience does that sound right? And thank you again for the video!
It should be roughly 4x the yarn, and 8x the stuffing! Yay maths!
Okay but like. I have dyscalculia, math is incredibly hard and mostly incomprehensible to me (I cannot do anything more complicated than single digits in my head, I have to do it on my fingers or paper or just use a calculator). There are other things I suck at (readin music, for example or spacial awareness).
But math for me is like. The epitome of everything hard and complicated. And you made a video where math is actually *understandable* for me. Like I JUST USED IT!!! I MADE SOMETHING BIGGER! its not a complicated pattern, just some increases and decreases to create basically a very smooth dumpling but like. I did it!!! And I didnt cry like I usually do with math and it was really easy!!!! The way you illustrated stuff as well as talk about it is amazing (and the choice of a pattern to work with in the video is also good, because it has both simple shapes and smth more complicated and it really shows how to do this properly).
I dont like bulky yarn for amigurumis and this is just. So cool

I just wanted to say that this video has been so helpful! I bought a pattern for a dog loaf amigurumi. It was smaller than I wanted, so I thought I would double the size. I followed this video which was extremely helpful! I noticed on my pattern that there were some things that shouldn't be doubled (i.e., you're essentially making a square in the round, so you wouldn't double 4 to 8 in terms of repeating the "working up" of the square, otherwise you'd get an octagon). Anyway, lots of trial and error, but this video is amazing. Thank you so much!

hey, i got an amigurumi pattern with bobble stitches, do you just make 2 BO instead of 1? or is there another tip to make it twice bigger?
I tried calculating this on a turtle pattern I found online, and it worked pretty well for the arms, but something went wrong with the head (there was supposed to be 6 rows of sc, but only came out to 5) because when I doubled the rows, it was rows 10-14 that were supposed to be sc, but it didn't add up to six, which was wierd.
I love your videos and your patterns, thank you very much for sharing. Ivm currently trying to enlargen your triceratops and I'm having trouble with how to enlargen the puff stiches for the horns. Would you have an advice on that?
Some details need to be replaced instead of just enlarged. You could try swapping them with something like a TrTr cluster stitch, or make little cones and sew them on after.
@@ComplicatedKnots Thank you so much for the advice. I went with the trtr cluster, because I really liked how the horns were integrated in the head in the original pattern. The cluster ended up bulging a little on the side, so I replaced the first and last trtr in the 5 cluster with a tr and I stitched it into the previous round to spread it out a bit. I'm quite pleased with how the hrad turned out. However the body now looks rotated compared to the head, so I might have to gover my math again there 😅

Is there a way to make it 1.5 times larger without changing yarn size or double yarns???
im actually trying to size up one of your patterns the loch ness monster one by 4 times and im making in out of chunky yarn so trying to make it very large in still struggling with this video im not the best at math any other tips to make sense of why you do the second row on the leg and the fourth on the body
Do i only multiply my numbers by 2 when they are not inside a bracket? for example i am trying to enlarge your pattern for the pumpkin cat and for round 4 with the ears (round 2 on original pattern) i have 4 [sc,inc] to make a round total of 16. so hopefully make my question clearer do i only multiply when my numbers are outside of the bracket (for example the 4) and leave the ones inside the brackets the same? For a second example my round 14 (original 7) I have 12 [sc,3scin1,sc] to make a round total of 60. am i doing this correct?
i know this is a very late reply and idk if this will make sense but the pattern i’m doing has a line of 6(7sc, dec) 2sc [50]how my math ended up was 12(7sc, dec) 4sc [100]so i think it’s just the outside numbers. i also just drew tally marks and would cross out tallys that would just be single crochets and circled the 2 lines that would be decreases. basically since my pattern has like 100 stitches in a row now i didn’t want to draw the circles for the stitches but just tallys.

Thank you so much! This is very thorough and helpful. I'm just wondering how you add in the loop notes? The original pattern I'm using has one row of BLO. It's while doing the first colour change at the end of a hand, row 5 originally. Would I just apply the BLO to row 10 in the bigger version?
In general, yes! Sometimes you might move it up to R9 (if you think it looks better to you), but usually R10.
