It looks like you kept one of the 2nd row seats up so you can sit in it? That's what I want to try to do. Congrats on installing the rack yourself. You go girl!
I kept both seats. My bed was built to fall over the seat when I put it down. Behind the passenger is where I enter and exit and I sit there when I'm working. I turn my bed into a desk during the day. Thanks Karen!!!!
I never thought about carpet or vinyl. I have thought about painting it. I worked on installing a sliding table today and I actually decided that I need to paint it! Now to figure out what kind of paint, what color and if the fumes will be out by my next planned trip in two weeks.
Kym- Can you give me a suggestion with getting one of those ceiling nets? I need one that fits over the back hatch and back seat, as opposed to right over my head. I also don’t want it to block my sunroof.
Funny, you ask. I was trying to figure out how to put one there, too. The one over my head still allows me to open my sunroof. You're talking about one for the ceiling, right? Just further back?
Yes! This is my exact question as well! 😍 Currently car camping with no platform and no storage other than the front seats. So I constantly have to move things around. 😅 I've been looking into building a platform like this and yours is the best yet!
@@gingerk7602 Oh, thank you so much!!! I think I should post on the community tab. Give me a few days to get a measuring tape and I'll make the measures and post them. Thanks again!!! (Yes, you need a platform!)😀
so many questions ... can one just park anywhere and sleep for the night ? or are there some rules / tips for it ? Also how do you handle the bathroom situation ? TY.
No, every state is different. Definitely have to research the area first. Your best bet when starting out is to sleep at truck stops. Pilot J and Loves are great travel centers. You will find other campers there for the night. It's safe and you have a bathroom and food it needed. I have everything I need to use the bathroom inside my SUV. If I can use a facility, I do that. At night, I never leave my vehicle to use the restroom. Once it's dark, I'm inside for good.
No, but I made a video (under 9 minutes) with the dimensions: th-cam.com/video/vGDVuqFzkOg/w-d-xo.html - the measurements start at 2:17. Hope this helps!
could you still feel the wood when laying down on the two inch foam you bought? I'm thinking of doing something similar, and was considering getting a mattress topper to go along with the foam, do you have any suggestions from your experience?
No, I can't feel the wood. Back then, I had two - 1" foam mattress pads. Eventually, the second 1" foam mattress ripped, so I purchased a 2" gel memory foam. So I have 3" of padding and I can't feel the wood. Even when I turn. When I had just the 2", my hip bone would hit the wood as I was turning from side to side. Since adding the gel memory foam, I never feel the wood. The gel foams are very nice!!!
6'3"? You'd definitely have to make your bed on the passenger side and take out the passenger seat or figure out how to build a table to lay over it. I'm 5'3" and the wood platform is a total of 3 pieces at 5'7" - pushing the driver seat up close to the steering wheel gives me more pillow room. So maybe 5'9" at the most.
Hello Nice Job. I did my own also and I'm not handy lol Could you possibly share with me where your son ordered the cargo basket from? Thank you. Carpe Viem Sieze the Road!
Hey! Thank you so much!! Here is the link for the rooftop basket - this is my Amazon Affiliate link, just in case - I may earn a few quarters from a sale. LOL amzn.to/4bcYUcQ (and THANKS again!)
(I never enter or exit from the very back) I use the right side back passenger door. I keep the seat up. I get in and sit down. Nothing on the floor board either. Take off my boots/shoes. And once I'm in - since I'm seated it's easier to crawl up in the bed. I never enter or exit from the bed side either. I've thought about taking out that right side back passenger seat, but I love using it as a seat. I actually roll up my bed during the day and use the bed platform as a giant table. I did a video called seat to desk - I just love having that seat there for getting in and out.
Do you have a written template or a video on just building the platform for your 2014 Honda CRV? I have the exact same vehicle. I want to do the exact same thing, but I don’t know even where to start. Thank you for helping out.!
You're welcome & thank you!!! No, sorry. A neighbor friend of mine put it together for me. I did make a video with the dimensions though. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/vGDVuqFzkOg/w-d-xo.html - hope this helps!
Sorry for the late reply! Just catching up on comments. I made a video on this platform and it includes all the dimensions. I didn't make it - a friend did, so there is real blueprint. th-cam.com/video/vGDVuqFzkOg/w-d-xo.html
YES!!! I've considered it. I'm probably gonna stick with my SUV for as long as I can and then eventually I'll move up to a van. My CRV won't pull a teardrop. It will only pull 1,500 lbs.
67" I'm 5'3" so perfect for me. I pull the drivers side seat up to make room for the pillows. So someone 5'10" would be okay. Unless they sleep with their toes pointed. 😃 🤣
@@OutonaLimbwithKym it went in so it would come out with perseverance. Sorry the seat got damaged but he should’ve known that was potentially going to happen. The seat will be more expensive than the entire fit out. No car insurance either if the seat is damaged. I’d claim insurance on the seat asap and get it replaced so you don’t have to worry about it in future.
@@caleyhall It was just the headrest part of the seat. No structural damage. And she's actually in excellent condition. My only issue now is getting to my spare tire!!
Nice build. I have the same exact CRV and model. How many miles do you have on it. I have 110,000 miles on mine. The only mod I have is the cross bars and hitch mount with hitch lights. 😊
I have 86k. I'm hoping to get 150k before I have to upgrade, but I really do LOVE my CRV. My mom has one. My brother, nephew, sister-in-law - we all have them.
Hello Kym. Hope All is well…..I’ve been watching ur video a few times and I like what u did on ur suv and I would like to ask u how much does it cost u to do the conversion bed camper on ur suv. I do own one the same as yours, mine is a 2016 Honda CR-V. Can u give me some tips or can u help to find the friend of urs that worked on ur suv? Thx in advance!!
My friend is actually building a house in Maine, so he's not in the area right now. I did pay him about $350 to make the bed, but I'm sure if you're handy with the tools you could make it under $100. I made a detailed video of just the bed platform - here is the link: th-cam.com/video/vGDVuqFzkOg/w-d-xo.html - I include all the dimensions. I hope this helps!!
Do u know the full length size of dimension before u cut it in half cuz we want it to build the whole thing for 2 people. If u know it, it would be very helpful. In this video showed only for I person demension. Thx again Kym n greatly appreciated!!
@@MichaelVuong-qo5bn Whatever the left side is, that's what the right side was. LOL - I had it cut in half. I'm not sure if I have the measurements written down somewhere or not, but I will check.
I'm 5'3" and I have to pull the driver's seat all the way up when I go to sleep. I can stretch, but it's a tight fit. A lot of people take out their passengers seat. I'm thinking you would have a problem. You may have to curl. LOL😁
I have a 2014 CRV (only 41K miles) and now that I am retired, your video inspired me to think on the lines of a conversion camper option to do some travel across the US in leisure. Question - if you had a need to remove the spare tire, you have to take the entire bed frame out am I correct? That would be a hassle. Alternatively is it possible to push up the frame base to get access to the spare. Great job and thanks for sharing the details and of course subscribed to your chnl.
That is awesome! Thanks so much for subscribing!!! WELCOME!! My setup has changed a bit and I'll be doing another complete tour soon. RIGHT now, I can not access my spare tire (big mistake) because my bed frame is too heavy and I added a outlander kitchen on the other side. I need to make it possible for me to remove them both easily just in case. I really am pushing it. If I get a flat, I can call AAA, but I don't think they are going to help me get my spare. LOL! My bed frame does fold and can be taken out, but it's so heavy. I can do it with help. Oh, 41k miles for a 2014 CRV is excellent. You will have the SUV for a long time. It's a great camping car!!!
Yes, I made 5 covers from Reflectix. Other side black out fabric for stealth. I'm trying to figure out how to make one for my sunroof, but with a built in fan.
I will suggest you put the model year of your CRV in the title of your video to save a lot of people a lot of time watching a video that doesn’t apply to their model year of CRV yeah
I call that my attic. I store things that I may need while I am driving. Extra glasses, Smoothie King Menu 😎 - it's a great place to store things. While I'm sleeping, I have an extra blanket up there, anything that I may need in the middle of the night. I can even store my window coverings. Right now I keep my sun visor and potty funnel up there. Just in case.
The crossbars run behind the glass. I believe the manufacturer places the tabs there, so the sunroof doesn't become obstructed. The entire sunroof is open. I can even stand up through the roof and pack stuff on the rack. Not sure about other makes and model SUV's though.
Great video Kym! I have a 2017 CR-V and have converted it into a no-build but I’m thinking about adding the single platform. Do you have measurements for your platform? I love how it folds up 🌊☀️🌸 I also installed my cross bars on my own 🙌🏽 can’t wait to watch your other videos… cheers from Oz

I kept both seats. My bed was built to fall over the seat when I put it down. Behind the passenger is where I enter and exit and I sit there when I'm working. I turn my bed into a desk during the day. Thanks Karen!!!!
@@OutonaLimbwithKym Thanks, Kim, & for making your videos. They're helpful and entertaining 🙂
Well designed and thought out. But why didn't you sand and paint all the wood or maybe wrap it in vinyl or automotive carpet?
I never thought about carpet or vinyl. I have thought about painting it. I worked on installing a sliding table today and I actually decided that I need to paint it! Now to figure out what kind of paint, what color and if the fumes will be out by my next planned trip in two weeks.
Billy made a mess
LMAO!!!!!!!
My exact thought lmao
Awesome
Thanks!!!
Awesome camper van, new friend here
Thanks so much!! Glad to be friends!!! ❤️
@Out on a Limb your welcome dear
Kym- Can you give me a suggestion with getting one of those ceiling nets? I need one that fits over the back hatch and back seat, as opposed to right over my head. I also don’t want it to block my sunroof.
Funny, you ask. I was trying to figure out how to put one there, too. The one over my head still allows me to open my sunroof. You're talking about one for the ceiling, right? Just further back?
@@OutonaLimbwithKym Yes, it would be one for the ceiling, just further back. I guess I asked the right person!
@Doug Ronald I'm having the same issue. Trying to find something to attach the back net to the ceiling. If I figure it out, I'll let you know!
Do you have the plans for the bed/ storage piece you built ?
Yes, I made a video of it - with all the dimensions. th-cam.com/video/vGDVuqFzkOg/w-d-xo.html
Love the build I have the same car you don’t happen to have the measurement to use for the wood cut outs do you!!
I'll get back to you with the measurements. I actually hired someone to make the platform. Thanks!!!
any chance you have the dimensions of the original setup? I have the same exact CRV and was hoping to make this exactly. Thank you!
Give me a few days to find a measuring tape. 😁 I'll get back to you!!! THANKS!
She even let him hoover the car lol
🤣😂
Loved this video! what year is your CR-V?
Thank you!!! She's a 2014.
You rock
💙 thank you!!!!
Hi any way that your friend who Made you the platform bed has the schematics or like instructions he used?
Awesome! Where did you get your flatbed for your car?
A friend built it. It's in the video. Thanks!
Thanks for the video, how long is your bed ,I’m 6’3”
Hello
Nice Job.
I did my own also and I'm not handy lol
Could you possibly share with me where your son ordered the cargo basket from?
Where do you purchase the reflective material? Thanks for the useful tips.
I purchased mine from Amazon: amzn.to/3PQlkWN - but I think Home Depot and Lowe's carry it, too.
I have the same vehicle. I have a difficult time getting in and out of CRV from the back doors. Do you?
Hey is there somewhere you have the blueprint for that platform?!?
Sorry for the late reply! Just catching up on comments. I made a video on this platform and it includes all the dimensions. I didn't make it - a friend did, so there is real blueprint. th-cam.com/video/vGDVuqFzkOg/w-d-xo.html
Have you thought about buying a teardrop trailer
YES!!! I've considered it. I'm probably gonna stick with my SUV for as long as I can and then eventually I'll move up to a van. My CRV won't pull a teardrop. It will only pull 1,500 lbs.
Thanks for the video, how long is your bed
67" I'm 5'3" so perfect for me. I pull the drivers side seat up to make room for the pillows. So someone 5'10" would be okay. Unless they sleep with their toes pointed. 😃 🤣
Wow that was so bad cutting it inside the vehicle lol.. love the vid otherwise it’s inspiring and very helpful..
It wouldn't come out of the car. 😆 Actually, I didn't show it on the video, but the saw cut right into my seat. Live and learn. Thanks for watching!
Mine liked like it was spilling over this year though 🥰😆🤦♀️ I’m Kimberly knight and I have some vids posted as well.
Oh, cool!!! I'll check out your videos. I love watching other videos and learning. I think I learn something new with every video I watch!!!
Does the hybrid one have seats that go down? Or the battery in the way?
I'm really not sure. I belong to a Facebook group for CRV's - they are very knowledgeable over there.
@@OutonaLimbwithKym Ok Thx Kym. How’s life treating u living in a SUV so far n how long have u been living in SUV?
Do u know the full length size of dimension before u cut it in half cuz we want it to build the whole thing for 2 people. If u know it, it would be very helpful. In this video showed only for I person demension. Thx again Kym n greatly appreciated!!
@@MichaelVuong-qo5bn Whatever the left side is, that's what the right side was. LOL - I had it cut in half. I'm not sure if I have the measurements written down somewhere or not, but I will check.
How long is the mattress I'm 6 ft 1 can my problem is when I'm sleeping i need to stretch my legs all the way
I'm 5'3" and I have to pull the driver's seat all the way up when I go to sleep. I can stretch, but it's a tight fit. A lot of people take out their passengers seat. I'm thinking you would have a problem. You may have to curl. LOL😁
New Subbie! Pretty amazing what you did.
Thank you so much!!! Welcome to my channel!!!
@@OutonaLimbwithKym -Thx for your
Where does your spare tire go
Underneath everything. There's a latch I pull up in the back. The spare is under there.
Did you create screens for your window(s) to get some type of air flow?
Yes, I made 5 covers from Reflectix. Other side black out fabric for stealth. I'm trying to figure out how to make one for my sunroof, but with a built in fan.
I will suggest you put the model year of your CRV in the title of your video to save a lot of people a lot of time watching a video that doesn’t apply to their model year of CRV yeah
Totally agree!!!! I was a newbie back then. 2014
Hi thanks for the video, how long is your bed ?
67" - I'm 5'3" and I have plenty of room. If I pull the drivers seat up, I get about 6 more inches. Thanks for watching!!!
what is the mesh/net thing you have coming down from the roof?
I call that my attic. I store things that I may need while I am driving. Extra glasses, Smoothie King Menu 😎 - it's a great place to store things. While I'm sleeping, I have an extra blanket up there, anything that I may need in the middle of the night. I can even store my window coverings. Right now I keep my sun visor and potty funnel up there. Just in case.
How has your glass roof held up?
I'm afraid to put cross bars and a storage box over my full sun roof. I feel like it would break the glass.
The crossbars run behind the glass. I believe the manufacturer places the tabs there, so the sunroof doesn't become obstructed. The entire sunroof is open. I can even stand up through the roof and pack stuff on the rack. Not sure about other makes and model SUV's though.
Owls!
Omg! Love your TH-cam channel name!!!!!
@@OutonaLimbwithKym hehe, thanks. 😁
Thank you!!!! I'll get the measurements when I get the chance. I'm out in the woods. Sleeping in my car. 😀 Best thing I did was scale down to a single platform!!
