One of my favourite movie scenes comes from this movie. And i still believe it was a blooper.
When Isabella Rossilini askes "Guess how old i am!" and Maryl answers "38?!" .... That look on Isabella Rossilinis face is priceless, that shock was real and you can tell. Rossilini was 37 during filming ... i think Maryl was supposed to say a different age, but it came out and Isabella was cought by surprise

I saw this movie 5 times in the theater summer of '92. I went alone the opening weekend then went again the second time with 3 friends because all characters reminded me of people in my life at the time. Next 3 times we took more people until the 5th time the theater was completely filled with our group. I LOVE this movie

Isabella Rossellini in this movie didn't make me a lesbian, but lord did she contribute to me slipping further down the slippery slope of sapphism. Honestly its incredible how much of an impression she made in a movie starring Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep. That's a hell of an accomplisment!

If you saw the raw footage clips from "Into the Woods" you'd realize that she sounds almost nothing like we hear in the film. Someone posted to TH-cam a daily from filming and her voice is hoarse and deep. I tried to find the clip but it's been removed apparently. Her voice is actually short of close to what she sound like in this film, but worse. Autotune does wonders.

This is my all time favorite movie! I just love *everything* about it!!
Anyway, here a couple answers/corrections to things most first time viewers are confused over.
    1. Hellen id actually eating that icing in the plastic tub in the scene where she gets forcibly removed from her nasty ass apartment.
    2. I _believe_ that Hellen is just blowing air from a fancy bottle into her eyes to get herself to cry. (So you were right about that one! I just wanted to add that I’m pretty sure that it’s just air that she’s using!)
    All-in-all, excellent reaction!!

Ernest most likely lost his license due to his drinking problem.(or like you mentioned that he screwed up one of his patients.)
Ernest is most likely a reconstructive mortician
They work on any harsh conditions that effect the deceased person in question.
Like discoloration, broken bones, missing hair(when I say missing hair I mean ripped out or burned off. I don’t think he would need to cover up a bald spot unless it’s what the family/ closest contact of that person wanted.), etc.
For example the man he worked on earlier in the film had an expression of happiness froze on his face and was a blue-grayish color. So Ernest would’ve had to paint the man the skin color he was when he was alive and relax the face muscle to where they could look presentable for his funeral.
In a way it’s a lot like plastic surgery, except replace the pulse with rigor-mortis.

I guess this level of camp funny horror it's only in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and not much else. This movie is quintessential and subgenre defining (in my honest opinion) Dark Comedy. You have to be in a certain mood in order to enjoy it.
Fun Fact: Isabella Rossellini used a body double for her nude scene in this film. The body double that stood in for her is Catherine Bell. Interestingly, a couple of years earlier, Rossellini did her own nude scenes in the film, Blue Velvet (1986).
Bonus Fact: In several scenes toward the end of the film, references to deceased musicians and actors are visible. When Bruce Willis's character, Ernest Menville, falls through the glass roof and lands in the pool, Jim Morrison can clearly be seen with a girl. Later on, an extra playing James Dean turns around (with his signature hairdo) as Ernest steals his Grey Spider. During the big welcome address at the ball, Elvis Presley is scolded for making random public appearances, an urban myth long-held by his fans that think he's still alive but hiding from the public eye.

5:30 The "IS IT UP YET?" thing came back later in a deleted scene when Ernest has fallen asleep on the couch and it's next morning.
The maid Rose comes into the kitchen to prep Madeline's tray but she sees racks and food everywhere... then finds Madeline in the fridge... Madeline is pissed and stuck (with icicle's on her brows) then tells Rose to close the door.
Rose is baffled and runs to Ernest who is waking up... Rose: Dr Menville! Ernest: Morning Rose... is IT up yet? Rose: Yes sir, IT's in the fridge!!!
Ernest jumps up... makes something up that it's a new beauty treatment Madeline read about in a magazine. He rips her from the fridge and tells her to look alive as if she was doing some beauty treatment. Put some avocado on your face or something!!!
Ernest tries to fire Rose and gives her an envelope but Rose doesn't trust it and tries to take the alcohol bottle from Ernest. Then Madeline comes 'walking' all crackling... into the livingroom and goes: See all fine! While she tries to wave with her broken hand (she has ovenmits on).
Ernest gets Rose out of the house and tells Madeline they can't be busted and he has to make her presentable.
He pulls her up the stairs (I'm sweaty! No dear, I think you're defrosting!) and Madeline has a meltdown... but Ernest promises he will make her his masterpiece.
Then the scene with her being painted starts...
Check the theatrical trailer for some shots of this scene. That trailer was made before the movie was changed radically but why they removed this hilarious scene is beyond me. The ending was actually filmed only 3 weeks before release!

So according to Goldie Hawn the orginal ending had the girls looking all young and beautiful still, and they see Earnest all old and happy with a new wife and kids. And Madeline is all “isn’t that pitiful, look how old they are. Aren’t you glad we’re not them” And Helen replies “yes” in a sad tone because she doesn’t mean it.

Yes Meryl Streep can sing.. and she was for a moment or two considered for the role of Evita.. that ultimately went to Madonna.. when the idea of a motion picture of the Broadway Musical was being batted around back in the late 70's and early 80's...
Also, the nurse that tells Ernest that Madilyn was taken to the morgue... Is the same one that plays the role of "Patty" in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark...

This one is an all time favorite of mine. I never get tired of watching it. Drowning Mona comes to mind as being another campy dark comedy that I thought was pretty underrated. Of course, Drop Dead Gorgeous has to be mentioned as well.

The reason that audience at the beginning was so disgusted was because "Songbird!" was a musicalized version of Tennessee Williams' VERY serious play "Sweet Bird of Youth". Not exactly appropriate material for a musical, much less one with Meryl singing disco style!

Oh mhay ghod I lost my shit when you put the Alice kicking the zombie dogs clip from resident evil. Milla Jovovich is such a bad ass queen in that role. Also I too was convinced that meryl streep drank that elixir shit, the queen looks the same to this day.

I have a theroy as to why the potion they took makes them look young forever. the "witch" they go too is a soul collecting demon who kills the young and beautiful and havests their souls for the potion they need. They are dead eternally, The price both women pay is a steep one. forever beautiful/young on the outside but rock solid on the inside. literally and truly souless too. good job Earnest you lived a good long happy life with true wife and family. He never needed a devil potion to be truly happy.
