I'm so glad Robbie asked the question regarding what exactly happened for this to all fall into place at this moment. There's a lot of curiosity and speculation about that especially among libertarians. Millions of people have worked on this, the Australian government was really key, and there was an upcoming appeal scheduled that would have brought up questions of freedom of expression which would have made European politicians look bad during election year. Amazing job on the part of Assange's lawyers. Other things Mr. Shipton didn't mention include that Biden didn't want to put Assange on trial because of what he might say on the stand. I think there must have been fear too of what it would look like if Assange were to die in prison - he'd be a martyr, especially if they didn't get him to plead guilty to anything. For my part, I still think the fact that Trump said (to Tim Pool at the LNC) he'd pardon Assange did put pressure on Biden to do something quick.

I hid my British English from my childhood in Texas then Alabama schools, ran away age 21 to military, got tossed into c.i.a as k g.b creative warfare stage 1 in any world war. No world war happened all those 35 years now honourably retired. Julian helped me break difficult codes by his control of a room of giant computers. If computers couldn't break codes, Julian often silently walked up to me, lt.colonel rank all 35 years, he handed me the code for people to break code using human creativity. Never did julian speak more than grunt yes, no and smile at me. I had no idea his English as mine wasn't American English. He was very much little brother to me, and remains dear.

As for your assertion that Julian should be compensated for a politically driven prosecution, that ship sailed when he wisely took a plea agreement. Assange's persecution/prosecution was affected with the aid of four presidents, two parties, the US intelligence community, US state department, and NATO/ SEATO related political and intelligence communities with the aim of neutralizing him and his freedom-of-speech ilk (i.e. unaligned media). Assange would have been sitting in prison until the cows came home regardless of who was democratically elected in the US. Had it had not been for Bobby Kennedy making a pledge to pardon Assange (if elected), Biden never would have green lighted a plea bargain

Shows why it's dangerous for the U.S. to keep this man in office though. Glad Julian is finally free!

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange returned to his homeland Australia aboard a charter jet on Wednesday, hours after pleading guilty to obtaining and publishing US military secrets in a deal with Justice Department prosecutors that concludes a drawn-out legal saga.
The criminal case of international intrigue, which had played out for years, came to a surprise end in a most unusual setting with Assange, 52, entering his plea in a US district court in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands. The American commonwealth in the Pacific is relatively close to Assange’s native Australia and accommodated his desire to avoid entering the continental United States.
Assange was accused of receiving and publishing hundreds of thousands of war logs and diplomatic cables that included details of US military wrongdoing in Iraq and Afghanistan. His activities drew an outpouring of support from press freedom advocates, who heralded his role in bringing to light military conduct that might otherwise have been concealed from view and warned of a chilling effect on journalists. Among the files published by WikiLeaks was a video of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack by American forces in Baghdad that killed 11 people, including two Reuters journalists.
Assange had flown from a London prison to Saipan in a charter jet and flew in the same aircraft to the Australian capital Canberra on the same day.
He was accompanied on the flights by Australian Ambassador to the United States Kevin Rudd and High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Stephen Smith, both of whom played key roles in negotiating his freedom with London and Washington.
The flights were paid for by the “Assange team", Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said, adding his government played a role in facilitating the transport.
