The RAF Police's 'force multiplier' dogs protecting Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons

  • The RAF Police Dog Section at RAF Coningsby is a powerful asset for detection and protection, with one dog doing the work of eight two-legged personnel.
The animals patrol the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Typhoons which could be called upon to defend the UK's airspace at a moment's notice.
After a busy shift though, all the dogs are rewarded with some downtime, where they are played classical music to help them unwind.

I remember a story my boss told me about one particular RAF security dog. The Canadian Air Force was on deployment to an RAF base. The phone rang, it was the RAF Police, they were making everyone aware that one of their security dogs, quite vicious apparently, had gotten loose. So my boss was asking what the dog looked like, what it's name was, what precautions to take should the dog be close by and who to call should the dog be sighted, about a five minute conversation, all the while petting and feeding the dog some of his lunch. True or not I don't know, but it is a good story though.

I once walked into the dog section at Leuchars while everyone was at lunch, the dogs in their kennels saw me and looked at me like death, I died on the spot, pure animal fear. These dogs are the business.

I remember sitting around on the grass one fine morning behind some buildings after spending the night on perimeter OPs, a crab dog section picked on us for a bit of training (although they didn’t tell us that at the time). Result: eight squaddies hands up against wall with four snarling dogs behind us sitting waiting off the lead. Scared? F@£kin right I was! 😂

In the Noughties, first time working in a Tri-Service GDP environment. Crab Dog section requested we get them more involved in incidents as they were under review and if they could not justify themselves, would be removed.
Got a shout late at night of an armed intruder in the local MQ club. Requested Duty Crab Dog section to attend, but they declined as the dog may get stabbed or injured due to broken glass.
We never called them again, and the last I heard Crab Dog Section was removed from that location.

No offence to the handlers, but I quite fancy my chances of being able to steal a Typhoon now.
Good job Waddo' closer and I'd much rather have a T1, shame the dog handlers look more competent.

I hope they've got more than just a few dogs to protect million dollars worth of tech.
Force multiplier and QRA assets that meet at the RVP when the GCAP is in town. Then the DCFG is primed for the WATU group to do their job.

That Raf bod isn't protecting anything, go gym, do some cardio, if you aren't training yourself you aren't training a dog.

Why aren't the dog handlers armed? And, I hate to say it but, good as those dogs are, special forces soldiers are trained to kill guard dogs silently.

    • @apoc5566
      @apoc5566 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

It's just training mate. Security will be armed when there's a believed security threat that has been met, and if an enemy SF has impossibly weaseled into the UK, into an RAF base completely undetected, there are much bigger problems to worry about. I can also assure you, any combat soldier, special forces are not, will not be braindead enough to waltz their way in when all bases like this when patrol dogs, sensors, and cameras exist. Secondly, nothing would be silent at all.

@@apoc5566 I hope so, though there was a recent video about Typhoons in Estonia guarded by a single reservist in a hut with telephone! I wasn't worried about UK bases particularly, although somewhere like Lossiemouth could be vulnerable to saboteurs landed by submarine. More places like Estonia, Romania and Cyprus.

@Britishempirewillneverdie That sort of complacency is why the Israelis were caught by surprise by Hamas. Attacking airfields is precisely the sort of thing the Spetznaz train for.
