      I just looked at his stats. He doesn't have any of the benchmark numbers of a HOF'er like 3,000 hits, a .300 average, etc. Homreuns he has 272, and that's as a 1st baseman. No doubt he was an above average player but his stats aren't eye-popping.

    In the summer of 1982, my girlfriend and I went to Phipps Plaza in Atlanta to see Rocky 3.. After the movie ended, we were on our way out and I looked across the lobby and saw Steve Garvey and Jerry Reuss in line to purchase tickets. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to speak to Steve. I walked up to him and stuck out my hand and said, I just wanted to tell you how much I admire the way you play>" He smiled a toothy smile and said, "Thank you very much." Huge forearms and a class act. Hall of Famer in my book.

Tony Perez is in and even though I'd have never admitted it Steve Garvey was as good or maybe just a little better than Perez.. He actually hit for a decent average and was clutch.. His good guy personality actually worked against him as he wasn't seen as rugged hard nosed player. More on the soft side Hollywood style.. But actually he was a skilled killer at the plate.. • @msa4998
    @msa4998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Steve was my favorite player growing up. He was great. The thing that keeps him out is that, objectively, his career numbers are just a notch below HOF. 2,600 hits, less than 300 HRs, 1,300 RBIs, 38.1 WAR are just not HOF stats. He did everything very well including fielding .... but he was not "great" like one thinks of HOF. There are some players in that likely should not be in either that he comps against. Issue is that in today's era with the inflated numbers, Steve's numbers will comp even less.
    If he ever gets in and I HOPE he does, it will be for his postseason performances and his stats there are off the charts. He always seemed to come up big with the stakes were high and a true great does that.

    • @nitro_001newman2
      @nitro_001newman2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s just it. Garvey’s career stats fall short, because he didn’t play enough, despite playing almost every game, but he accomplished greatness in unique categories. He wasn’t just about stats, it’s about what he accomplished. Playing the most consecutive games by an NL player. Going the whole season without making an error. Winning MVP in 2 all-star games. Being the only write in to be voted in an all-star game. Being one of the best players ever in the post season. Winning 4 gold gloves, and could of won a whole lot more if it wasn’t for Keith Hernandez. Winning MVP in the NL for the season. Winner of the World Series in 1981, and he’s been in 4 total. Having that incredible game in the 1984 playoffs against the Cubs. Having six 200 hit seasons, and so many seasons batting .300+.

    • @kingcassius2586
      @kingcassius2586 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Too many modern fans think that HOF means stats & stats only. Dude set the NL record for consecutive games. He played in so many of the most important games of his era & excelled in those big games. As far as stats go, WAR doesn't account for how stats unfold. Too many things that happen in the game are overlooked because they don't show up in stats. Stats make a good barometer for HOF but the extra things like his streak, being part of that Dodger infield, postseason performances, All Star performances(when they actually played hard), hitting behind runners which hurts your stats but more importantly helps your team,.. pushes him over the line from 'almost' to 'HOF'.

    • @harrisongelles685
      @harrisongelles685 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kingcassius2586 exactly and war wasn’t even a stat back then and is very misleading anyhow. Stats definitely don’t tell the whole story plus he was an outstanding defensive first baseman and saved Bill Russell many errors.

      When I think HOF I think 3,000 hits, 500 homeruns, .300 average or a gold glove ss or 2B with insane fielding skills and a respectable bat. I will say that with the election of Harold Baines the requirements for the HOF have been lowered.

    • @paineintheass233
      @paineintheass233 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThekiBoran Absurd, the HOF would be halved if that were sole criteria. Do you understand how many GREAT, not good, but GREAT players, dont manage 15 years of 200 hits. IMO if you take an era, any era which rounds out to about a decade+, and you garner most of the awards and accolades at your position, you automatically deserve serious consideration. Then go from there. Garvey deserves the HOF. My concern is that with improvements in exercise and conditioning, we are going to eventually end up with alot of not dominant players able to accumulate "numbers" merely by hanging on. I'd rather reward a guy who had a dominant decade, than a mediocre 15+ years. and yes, sportswriters, many of whom couldn't throw a ball from here to there, and who focus solely on big numbers, should NOT be involved. Someone could create an algorithm to pick the inductees if certain numbers are the only ticket in.

    As I was watching this interview I kept seeing a correlation between Garvey and Cary Grant. Beyond the obvious connection that they are/were both very handsome men, they have another connection ... just as Garvey is not in the HOF, Cary Grant never won an Academy Award ... other than a honorary lifetime contribution award he was given late in his life.
    The reason Cary Grant never won an Academy Award is that his critics felt that he made things look too effortless. They felt he was just being himself on the screen and not really "acting". Well, maybe this is part of Garvey's problem ... i.e., it just looked way too easy for him out there. It's like it was just effortless for him.
    Well, I would contend that that is exactly why he SHOULD be in the HOF ... very few players can make it look easy, which we all know it isn't. Great interview!

    When I started following baseball as a kid in the late 1970's, Steve Garvey was one of those great stars in the game whom everyone readily assumed would make the Hall of Fame. He had great seasons year after year and would make all the magazine covers as one of the most talked about stars in the game.
    But he hasn't made Cooperstown. I'm still wondering about others such as Dave Parker, Thurman Munson, Fred Lynn and Dick Allen, too. At least one of them (Munson at least) should have made it.
    Garvey says here that he never fought with a pitcher. But in 1978, he did engage in a lockeroom brawl with teammate Don Sutton after a major disagreement between them. The funny thing is, after that fight, the Dodgers got hot and started winning and eventually took the NL West from the Reds and Giants. Only ballplayers can explain such things.

    Garvey does not have 3,000 hits, does not have 300 home runs, does not have a .300 career BA and has "only" 1,300+ RBI. He does have an MVP Award and has a WS ring, plus 10 AS Games. His postseason numbers are great also. He was the model of consistency, and it does seem like he ought to be in the HOF. Maybe missing those benchmark numbers has hurt him.

He was a bit vain and a bit of a cad, but he had good reasons. He was a stud. Strong. Confident. Captain America player. Perennial all-star. A world champ. Legendary Gang of Four infield. Celebrity couple with ex-wife. He and Joe Theisman are cut from the same cloth. He blew his political aspirations with the news of having "impregnated" (his words at the time) a couple of chics outta wedlock. They might be hold'n it against him 'cause he was such a slayer. Hey Hall of Fame; get with it. Everybody else knows.

Then the all time hit and home run kings aren't in!!!!! He's a right wing Republican, and sportswriters tend not to regard such players warmly. That's perhaps one reason he can't get the HoF votes. Then there was the matter of his extra-curricular family and complicated romantic life. Garvey had always cultivated an image as a strait-laced, monogamous guy, and when the truth came out, it looked a lot worse than had he been an acknowledged hell-raiser. He seemed hypocritical- a phony. These things shouldn't affect his status as a ball-player. He was a mainstay of some very good teams over a long career, with many big achievements to his name. The other stuff shouldn't matter when it comes to the Hall. Should he go in? I don't know. But he shouldn't be kept out for the wrong reasons.

    • @wayned1807
      @wayned1807 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I agree that all that may be true but what I think has a lot to do with it is most of the HOF voters are in the East and really don't follow the western teams like they should because of the time difference. Especially back in the 60's and 70's. Back then it was as if the west coast teams were the part of the minor leagues. Look how much time the sports channels today give the New York and Boston teams compared to the West in all sports not just baseball. I don't blame them, it's where most of their audience is. But a HOF candidate shouldn't be ignored just because he's not in the headlines that are written hours before the west coast games end. The voters need to do look deeper than just stats. He put people in the seats and that should count for something. His private life aside he did a lot for baseball. Put him in.
