  • In this episode of the Motorhome Matt podcast, Keith and Matt dive into the hot topic of motorhome deposits. Have you ever wondered if you can reclaim your deposit after putting it down on a campervan, caravan or motorhome?
    Keith and Matt explore the ins and outs of this tricky subject, sharing real-life stories, the questions you need to ask of a dealer and industry insights that every motorhome enthusiast needs to know.
    We also bring you an exciting news story about a revolutionary hydrogen engine that could shake up the EV market. This innovative five-stroke engine runs on hydrogen fuel, which could potentially allow refuelling at existing petrol stations. Matt weighs in on this development with cautious optimism about its future impact on the EV revolution.
    In the Q&A, Matt answers your questions about the demand for left-hand drive motorhomes in the UK, campsites without electric hookups, and clarification on the B+E licence recognition in Europe for towing larger caravans.

    We had a similar situation before we bought the van we now have however thanks to Kate at Coachbuilt spotting terrible flaws in the van we had put a deposit on we got our deposit back - this particular company that we had paid the deposit to knew they were trying to sell a dodgy vehicle and immediately paid up! Xx

    Two factors impede hydrogen fuelled engines: lack of availability of retail supply (oil companies not exactly embracing change away from fossil fuels) and the lack of green hydrogen production. Blue hydrogen still involves fossil fuels, so no benefits to use. Will be a long slow process, same as was for EVs.

    Deposits for new vehicles that won’t be built for several months should be fully refundable with interest. I don’t think people realise that some dealers are making money from customer deposits held in high interest accounts. Why not change the rules so that deposits won’t be taken on new vehicles unless the dealer can deliver a new vehicle within 3 months. Also, if a deposit is taken on a credit card, isn’t there. 2 week cooling off period? So people shouldn’t pay a deposit for new vehicles on site, but over the phone after the dealership visit.

      I think you are absolutely right as the length of time are getting longer & longer .

      This is a fair comment but depends on the contract you are entering into. If the agreement allows for delays and conditions of cancellation apply that’s the agreement you enter. Remember, the dealer is the middle man to your order with the manufacturer and they don’t have such recourse as their commitment is a commitment. That’s what the deposit represents. As for high interest accounts… that may be true too but the returns are hardly life changing. The remote selling rules apply if a deposit is taken remotely but a contract would be required to be signed. This is usually requested on the premises. Check the small print and buyer beware. Delays on new are common place now. If you’re unsure take action cautiously and with an awareness of the terms. Thanks for commenting. Really appreciate your input

    In August '22 we put a deposit down on a new AutoTrail Expedition campervan, with an expected lead time (written in the contract) of about 15 months. 8 months later we spotted a lightly used model, same spec but different dealer, and after a viewing and test drive decided to buy it. We thought we wouldn't get our deposit back from the original dealer but next day we visited them to explain and to cancel our order. To our pleasant surprise, they refunded our deposit without complaint.
    From their perspective, with a popular model and a list of customers waiting, I'm sure they would have had no problem just moving everyone else up the list a bit.
    So i think that situation is a bit different to, for example, someone putting a deposit down on a specific stocked van.
    I've heard of some people whose circumstances had changed during the long wait, but instead of cancelling their (fixed price) order they waited for the van to be ready, then sold it on almost immediately for a nice profit.

      Great to hear. Indeed some were able to ‘flip’ the motorhome for a profit but the landscape has changed somewhat now.

    How you say these are exciting times to live in with a straight face is beyond me. As a motorist these are the most depressing times to live in as they neuter all cars worth owning and try to force us into a washing machine on wheels that are far too expensive with depreciation a rolls Royce would blush at, not to mention where is all the electricity coming from.🤷‍♂️

      I’m an eternal optimist I guess and am grateful for being here now. I am a petrol head with an embarrassing number of cars. I agree depreciation is eye watering on many new cars. I stand by my comment that I am excited to be alive now with so much change happening that will be talked about for centuries. Mistakes will be made and opportunities will be missed and no doubt greed will prevail as is the human condition but it’s still an exciting time. I always focus on the positive and am happy to be criticised for that. Thanks for commenting and watching!

    Can you get your deposit back if the dealer does not stick to delivery dates they state

    • @MotorhomeMatt
      @MotorhomeMatt  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would depend on the terms of the contract you signed. You could ask but there is no guarantee unless the terms allowed for this.
