Running with Asthma? WATCH THIS FIRST...

  • Running with asthma is totally achievable. In fact, I've finished multiple marathons as an asthmatic runner. The key is to learn to control your asthma, both with your asthma medication (speak to your doctor), and with adjusting your training so you can avoid your asthma triggers. In fact, running and other forms of regular aerobic exercise have been shown to improve lung function and respiratory health in asthma patients. Done right, the benefits of running with asthma make it something to seriously consider.
Always take medical advice before starting a new exercise regime.

I have 'exercise induced asthma'. I'm typically fine day to day, but when doing intense bursts of activity- jogging up stairs, tackling a big hill or, worst, sprinting to the finish, I get an attack once the activity stops. Many races have found me staggering around gasping at the finish line clutching my inhaler with EMTs standing by. Funny enough, I've started training for an ultra this year, and haven't had an attack yet! I think the consistent low intensity mixed with medium intensity intervals has seriously improved my lung function!

i’ve had asthma since i was a young kid and for me it’s mainly exercise induced or when im having allergy issues, i have a mile test in a few weeks but even if i run a quarter of a mile my asthma goes crazy and my regular abetoral doesn’t work and i can’t use the nebulizer since i’m at school. our mile time has to be below 13 minutes and it counts towards our grade, when i start having issues i get chest pain, uncontrollable wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and what happened yesterday was that o couldn’t talk, it was too much pressure on my lungs. i’m trying to train myself to get better at running but every time i try my asthma pushes me down

I've never had asthma or at least never thought so. I used too do cross country when I was younger and never noticed anything different. However, recently at the age of 18 I'm fit but noticed I've had an abnormal amount of mucus occurring, a LOT of coughing and whistling when I'm tired or at least my throat makes that sound. Idk if I have asthma or just an allergic reaction too something but either way it sucks.

I know this is an old thread but it sounds like post nasal drip. If you breathing isn't affected along with it and its just the coughing you could try nasal sprays. It keeps the excess mucus away. Also see what the triggers are for it like does dairy make it worse, pollen etc. Mine gets bad whenever I have dairy so I tend to avoid it along with a nasal spray and it helps so much. Hope that helps.

They signed me up for a 1500m next week race that's 5 laps around the field. I told them i had asthma. I never ran in in anything that big in my life. The most i can do is like 2 netball courts. I don't know know how to do it because I dont know anyone to ask for help, and i also dont want to disappoint or embarrass myself. I have a plan for what to do, though, I won't say I'm in shape because I'm not, but I'm really passionate about doing it. The people who signed me up aren't interested in training or preparing, so I have to figure it out myself.

My asthma is pretty controlled unless it’s really humid and hot or really cold I would need my inhaler. I like to run but I get so tired like my chest gets tight and I have a hard time breathing. But I would know if I need my inhaler because if I wheeze a lot I’ll need it or if my chest is super tight to the point I can’t get air in. I haven’t had an asthma attack caused by exercise in a long time, but I just get out of breath easily. My gym class does a mile run every week and my goal for the school year is to be able to run the mile without running out of breath. This is really helpful, thank you!

The point of taking the medication regularly and PREVENTATIVELY is to stop the chest tightness, loss of breathe, and asthma attacks. Just because you can "power through" your symptoms doesn't mean that's a course of treatment. That could be very harmful and possibly deadly for others. Asthma is not something you can "train out" of your body. It's like type 1 diabetes... if you don't take your meds and don't die or suffer majorly, it doesn't mean you don't have diabetes and you likely could be healthier by taking your meds. Properly managed asthma will make any exercise much easier.

It's true....there have been times where I've excercised a lot and my asthma felt like it vanished. A few years or even months later, ones forgetfulness can cause a flare up at any time. It's happening to me rn.

I am guilty for this, but I’ve had asthma all my life! Exercise is hard on me, and that’s strayed me away from it. I’m trying to get better at it, and when I run at school I always walk when I need to. Sometimes I think it’s embarrassing because I’m the only one who can’t run. And that’s also strayed me away from exercising. But I need to keep trying! I’m not a sporty person, but I’m trying my best to use the elyptical!

I've heard using the inhaler feels miraculous but I want to be able to run without it at least as fast and as long as I could before

    I’m asthmatic and I run 5KM - 7KM 6 times a week it takes me 30 - 40 mins.
I take a few doses of my inhaler before I start.
I have been doing this for 3 years consistently with intermittent fasting 2 days a week. I sometimes swim once a week.
I don’t think being asthmatic is an obstacle from my experience.
But you should consult with a “good doctor” before starting just to be safe because not all doctors are same.

The hardest thing my doctor told me since I had a similar experience was to deal with it. It will eventually get better but it won’t go away on its own. You have to strengthen your lungs with pain and gain. No other way

Do you think the same cardio benefits can be obtained just by using a treadmill, or is it better to run outside? I'd like to run outside, but I'm scared of dogs!🤷🏾‍♀️

    K.P. Buteyko once said that:
To test the validity of the scientific discovery made by us almost 30 years ago, it takes 30 seconds of time: offer an asthmatic hyperventilation - he will have a suffocation attack, offer to reduce breathing - will relieve the attack. The cause of the asthma attack is hyperventilation of the lungs, no one said this before our scientific research. And so I have been asking scientists for 30 years to spend 30 seconds to check this (1986).

No way you can run with asthma. No way. You simply can’t breathe. I was always fast in short distance but running more than a minute or two and I’m gasping for air and have to stop
