  • Baldur’s Gate 3 can be a bit overwhelming for those unfamiliar with Dungeons and Dragons. If you just picked it up and don’t know where to start, this is the video for you.
Baldur’s Gate 3 throws a lot at you in the first couple hours. So much that you might miss out on some key items, moments, and characters in the opening area. Here are 10 things you need to do when you boot it up for the first time. This will include some very light spoilers for act one. Baldur's Gate 3 is out on PC and comes to PlayStation 5 early next month.

Good tip if you want the sword at the beginning. Change Shadowhearts spells before to have the command spell. And you can force him to drop the sword with I think a 50 or 55% chance of succeeding. After that, feel free to pick it up and keep fighting, or just leave. But saved a bunch of time when I found that out.

Side note: the Everburn Blade (not Sword) does not deal "6 to 19 damage with extra fire damage" - that is very misleading. It deals 2-12 damage (2d6) plus 1-4 (1d4) fire damage. The reason your tooltip showed 6-19 is because your character has a +3 strength modifier, and the tooltip is taking everything into account for your character (2d6 + 3 + 1d4 = 6-19).

A good tip is, if you are aware that some skeletons, or corpses will revive to fight you. You can use the 'move' command to effortlessly and non-violently move them around the map. Group them up before combat, so when they activate they're all in a big pocket for easy control.
Additionally, you can 'drop' items out of your bag for free. Such as grenades, or potions. You can easily stack a few grenades in a pile next to a pocket of enemies, hit the grenades with any ranged spell and do tons of damage.

2:25 the “right” way to read stats on a weapon is to read the damage dice and modifiers innate to the weapon. You do not read the range of damage you do because that is specific to your character.
So maybe a weapon is 1D8 with a plus one modifier. Or maybe a weapon is 2D6 plus 1D8 lightning with a plus two modifier.

I don't know what the dice rolls mean though

    • @zero11010
      @zero11010 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@MIG95374 no problem. If you’ve got an elementary school level education you can figure it out.
The first number is the number of dice.
The second number is the number of sides on each die.
If there is another modifier that is added to the end.
So, 1D8+2 means the minimum die number is 1 and you add a 2 to it. So, your minimum result is 3.
And the maximum die number is 8 and you add a 2 to it so your maximum result is 10.
The range of things you add to rolls changes. It’s different for every character. You don’t include anything specific to your character unless you’re specifically talking about your character.
So, that 1D8+2 weapon would be changed if your character has 8 strength or 22 strength. Because on your character you add (or subtract) the modifier for that attack.
There’s a learning curve. But, that’s how it’s done. This is the industry standard.

A note on getting Karlach. If you explore the Emerald Grove, there's a door on the lower level, where a bunch of the teiflings are, near where the guy is yelling at the kid to give back whatever they stole. Open the stone door and look around, when you find a series of stone ledges you can get up, go up those and sneak-use the ladder. This will transition you to an area that overlooks the area by the log where she's healing herself. You can jump down there, but it'll cost you 30 or more HP to do so. So, make sure you've got the HP to do this. That will let you bypass some of the tougher fights in the area leading to her, allowing you to recuit her earlier. Feather's Fall can negate the HP cost. So, if you've got the DLC/early access stuff, then you've got a use for that potion of feather's fall that the DLC gives you.

    1) the Command spell (can get it in Shadowheart by swapping her prepared spells before battle. (a lot of people know this one)
    2) if you pick up the big chest (chitinous chest? I think? something like that), and carry it to the door where this cutscene starts... and if you crowd your characters right up against the door without clicking on it... you can make enough space behind your characters to lay that chest sideways in the narrow part of the hall before the doorway. This blocks the big adds which come later in the fight. It's a very durable chest. (also there are exploding barrels (purple alien ones) which you can gather and place...)

The single thing that has helped me the most is setting up the toolbar!!
You can increase the number of rows visible. You can lock it to not accidentally move things around. You can also change the order of things.
I like to group melee attacks, then group ranged attacks, then other things. I group spells by single target, AOE, buff, and debuff spells. I do a similar thing with consumables.
This helps me to actually find the thing I want when a situation happens. I know right where to look for a debuff. I know right where to look for for a potion and it’s the same location on every action bar.

3:15 make Shadowheart more powerful by making her a life cleric by using her to visit Withers in your camp and changing her subclass.
You won’t really use her trickery domain stuff much, life clerics get buffs to their healing and also can wear heavy armor. Give her heavy armor and a shield and she’s a very effective tank for your party and after level 6 one of the life cleric benefits is that when she heals someone else she gets free extra healing herself … which pairs well with heal buff gear you can slap on her to do things like give temp hit points to anyone she heals or a once per day AOE heal for all party members ….. or you can really try to enjoy that invoke duplicity. 🤣
Also, embrace healing word as a bonus action. It’s 1D4 per spell slot level instead of 1D8. But it’s a ranged heal and it’s a bonus action. Mathematically it’s not really much worse as you get more heal mods, and it’s a thing you can do at range while still attacking or casting other spells.
And don’t forget the value of her guidance spell for +1D4 on nearly every skill check you’ll do in the game.

Boots of aid and comfort are for sale from a vendor. When she heals the target gets 3 temp hit points. That’s a huge thing at low levels. Especially with her preserve life (the boots can be worth 21+ free heals in a single fight)
The whispering promise is a ring from another vendor, I think. After you heal anyone you gain 1D4 bonus to attack and saving throw for 2 turns (basically a free self bless).
It feels odd … but give her 16 strength and let her use a +1 mace in combat. She will be more accurate and do more damage than with her cantrip. At level 5 when her cantrip gets an extra 1D8 damage her average damage will be 9. A 1D6 mace with a +1 enchant and 16 strength averages 7.5 damage but you can do that immediately, and the increased accuracy means fewer misses which increases damage over time (also you get crit chance with weapon attacks that you don’t get on spells where the target rolls to save).
The Watcher’s Guide is an early spear you can get for her. No +1 enchant, but if an attack misses she gets advantage on her next two attack rolls (which is a big deal).
Maximize the effectiveness of your potions (which you find a ton of and you can craft) and also that healing word spell. Using your bonus actions well is important for your action economy.

@@zero11010 Personally speaking, I find in-combat healing spells to be a waste of spells for the most part. There are so many better and more interesting things you can do with spells than just 'restore 6 hit points'.
In general, buffing a character's AC or debuffing an enemy's attack so you don't get hit in the first place is generally more effective, especially if you find yourself in large group fights. Also, disabling an enemy in some way (Hold Person on a humanoid, Command: Flee, for instance) is generally a safer way of preventing damage while also giving you flexibility. Of course, there's just outright killing an enemy, which can always be seen as 'preventative healing'.
Secondly, smart combat can prevent a ton of damage before it happens. Taking advantage of high ground with spellcasters/ranged characters can allow them to duck out of sight while getting advantage on their attacks. Getting 'instant kills' by shoving enemies of cliffs and high places with... well, Shove, but also Eldritch Blast (with the right invocation), Thundering Wave, etc. can eliminate a lot of tougher enemies quickly. You can even cheese entire boss fights this way. Lastly, abuse the Hide mechanic for free damage on priority targets, especially on neutral targets that you have already decided you want to fight. You can even 'cheese' some fights by leaving your party behind, having your 'tank' initiate combat, then have the other three sneak up and get advantageous positions and free attacks in (do note that anyone that attacks won't have their action (or bonus action, if you used that as well) on their first turn, but will be able to move still). This is made easier by the fact the enemy combatants will be in Turn Based mode, but your hidden characters will be in real time, so enemies won't turn around or spot you if you draw all of the attention away from them.
Lastly, abuse Healing Potions. Especially before you hit level 5, a regular healing potion will be just as effective as a level 1 healing spell, and you aren't in a position to be throwing around level 2 healing spells freely. Very few characters have much to do with their bonus action at this point, and since you can instantly transfer potions around at no cost, it's easy to take the stack of 30 potions you have lying around and toss them to each character on their turn as they need them.
TL; DR: Having healing spells is nice, but utilizing spells for crowd control or eliminating priority threats is generally just more useful. Of course, at the end of the day, play in the way that you feel most comfortable playing.

@@zero11010 For heals you just use Short Rests to heal 50% each time. Using her healing spells are extremely inefficient usage of slots and you'll find yourself needing Long Rests more often as a result. If you want her to be a defensive force for the party, consider having her use Shield of Faith / Warding Halo (the latter to spread damage from the frontline to the backline) or respeccing her into a Light Cleric, where at 6 she'll have an unlimited reaction to impose disadvantage on enemies attacking any ally. That same light Cleric has good attack spells that don't use concentration. So not only do you get a decently armored offensive caster, but a slew of defensive utility. Light Clerics have always been very good.
The only heal worth is Healing Word as it can pick someone up in an emergency as a bonus action (don't use it to actually heal, just raise someone downed). Everything else is a wasted spell slot.

About the tip number two. Shadowheart actually have a spell that makes the devil drop his sword, you just have to attune that spell before entering the final zone (there is an autosave right before it). Just bear in mind that devil commander will pick his sword back up if you don't get it first. He focuses his attention on the mind flayer, so don't be scared to close up on him and cast the spell from point blank distance so you could pick up the sword immediately. Picking up items doesn't comsume action points, so you can use Shadowheart herself during her turn to both disarm the devil and pick up the sword.

You can actually skip those. There's a series of small ledges to the right of the cave mouth they are in. You can jump up those and you wind up pretty close to Gale and Laezel.

I had no idea most of the companions could be found near where you start. I don't have Gale, couldn't find him, but according to this vid, I passed by him several times... Got Karlach after a certain event so I'm locked out of romance options..
Oh the joy of being a new DnD player.. lol

Similar to speak with animals, you can also learn a lot from corpses! You get the amulet of speaking to dead in the same temple as you find withers and with it you can learn all sorts of fun secrets. Like for one, you can verify that Carlach is telling the truth about the "paladins of tyr" being a bunch of devil worshipping cosplayers by speaking to the dead refugee in their cabin.

Even better if you find the Necromancer's Book in the Farmacy' Cellar and the Amethyst in the well of the ruined town, then you can learn the spell after a few successfull skillchecks

I am testing a summary bot. I would greatly appreciate if any feedback on how well it works.
Here are the summaries for this video:
    1. Baldur's Gate 3 throws a lot at you in the first couple hours, so it's important to know what to do first.
    2. Find and recruit the game's companions, who are available in the First Act and close to the starting beach.
    3. Complete certain tasks, such as saving a trapped person and dealing with the tieflings, to acquire additional party members.
    4. Be strategic in combat and use the environment to your advantage, such as using a sword called The Everburn Sword to deal extra damage.
    5. Pay attention to your character's background, as it provides knowledge, personality traits, and bonuses in dialogue, decision making, and dice rolls.
    6. Return to your Camp often to rest, heal your party, and engage in context-sensitive conversations with your party members.
    7. Explore and loot the Crypt near the starting beach to acquire valuable items.
    8. Utilize the Speak with Animals spell or other methods to converse with animals and uncover alternative solutions to quests.
    9. Be cautious in
