    This drone/noise music in the background is really emphasizing the horror of stuck seatpost!

      ye got to be the worst video or one of them on youtube, why on earth do people think putting some constant droning sound on a video will make it better, if he had done the strobe it would be top worst video ever

      bcburdoa I hope so too! I might end up drilling a hole into the seatpost and put a nut and bolt on it so a pair of channel locks fan grab it, for I don't have a pipe wrench.

    I had a very stuck seatpost (saddle still attached) on a 20-year old bike that I thought I was going to have to use a blowtorch on. Ended up breaking it a tiny bit loose by using an 18" adjustable wrench on the square part at the top and somewhere upwards of 100 pounds of force on the end of the wrench. Then to get it out, I clamped onto it with my locking pliers so that the handle stuck out in the opposite direction of the nose of the saddle and continuously twisted it while pulling up. Still took a lot of force, but I eventually got it out.

    I was surprized to see this work. I am going to guess it works by the inside tube being slightly crushed by the outside tube, due to differential expansion and contraction. I was expecting the corrosion on the tube to look very bad, and it really wasn't.

    brilliant, I've seen videos of people hammering, using wrenches with a long pipe attached to the handle without success. very hard work also. the bike shops must have tried every other method. I really enjoyed this video. well done again... I wonder does copper grease on the seat post prevent it from seizing ???.

  • @SantaHul
    @SantaHul 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Theres a similar technique old skool car mechanics use on rusted bolts but as it's cooling down they hold a burning candle near it or something. The idea is that as it's cooling down it sucks in some wax which apparently loosens it up no end.

  • @ScreamingEagleFTW
    @ScreamingEagleFTW 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    can you talk about how youclamped it in the vice so as not to bend the frame?

  • @sambiles
    @sambiles 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you heat both the seat post and the frame and then quickly cool tim down you might get the seat post out, but the frame will become more brittle and thus weaker.You could instead use lye to get rid of the aluminum seat post and leave the frame intact, but maybe scarifying part of the paintwork.

    Thanks for the video, I need to do this on my mtb, it has been stuck since 2004, but I never cared to take it out. Now I need to replace the post. How long did it take you from start to finish? Heat it up for 10 min, cool, heat it up for another 10 min, cool?

  • @SirGirBot

    If the seatpost fell completely into the bikeframe's post and is lodged completely in there, seat not attached and it is not sticking out whatsoever. How would I go about getting it out?

  • @captainprototype187
    @captainprototype187 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got mine unstuck by using a wrench to catch the now flattened head of the seat pin. and a hammer to hit the wrench, Took me about 60 to 100 blows. The seat pin got flattened by trying to hammer it into the frame.

    • @captainprototype187
      @captainprototype187 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might also try drilling a hole through the pin, put a long steel rod thorugh and slowly turn. Begin the hole with an angle grinder. It might work.

    wow, you´re working with a blow-torch under a wooden ceiling?
    Hats off, 2:05 and you were nearly burning doen the house above....
    Next: You did it the wrong way round: Heaten the external Tube, cool the internal tube.

    • @bcburdoa
      @bcburdoa  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Couldn't heat/cool like that because then I would have set the paint on fire. Original paint, wanted to keep it

    • @jonathanwebb9862
      @jonathanwebb9862 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      freeclimb64 You'r relying on the differential expansion of the two metals to break the corrosion joint. Heating the outside may not be as useful as it might appear as the aluminium seat post will expand more quickly than the (steel?) frame. And it will spoil the paint.
      What's with "a blowtorch under a wooden ceiling"? How do plumbers plumb in a house, loft, airing cupboard or floor void?

    • @play2k2000
      @play2k2000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      freeclimb64 Hey-- Leave the man alone. No chance to ceiling could catch fire, and it worked. And the increased expansion of the aluminum is the whole point. Once expanded it will break the bind once the aluminum goes back to it's increased de-spansion once cooled to equal temperature. It's enough to unseize the coupling and he proved it. It's science..

  • @tad2ik

    By heating up the seat post you expand it further and making it get stuck even worse. What you should do is freeze the good damn tube
